Every Friday I provide a movie review about whatever movie I've seen that week. I figure it's a good time to go ahead and let you know what movies I'll be seeing for the rest of the summer so you can get excited to. All of these movies will be seen (or so the plan goes) on the Friday they're released which is the date I'm providing below.

July 25: X-Files and Step-Brothers

August 1: The Mummy III

August 8: Pineapple Express

August 15: Tropic Thunder

August 22: Death Race or The House Bunny (which do you think?)

August 29: Traitor and College and Babylon A.D. (which should I see first?)

Other movies are coming out on these dates but these are the movies that I've chosen to see first thing. Are there any others you'd like me to see and review? Are there any you're really looking forward to? Which will you go see?

After seeing Batman, which has already made well over 66 million dollars and boken box-office records, I must sadly report that I can't imagine any of these movies will be better. Indeed, The Dark Knight was most assuredly the height of the summer blockbusters, and I only hope to be entertained by what's left. Click HERE to read my review of The Dark Knight.

This is rounding out to be a great year in g's favorite character movies. Let's see, we have the recent record breaking release of Batman The Dark Knight, James Bond is back in Quantum of Solace, and g's very favorite, the return of The X Files. I predict I'll be doing an unprecedented 3 times to the theater this year.

Batman The Dark Knight is really the story today. The caped crusader raked in a box office record breaking $66.4 million on it's opening day! Sweet. It's still early but the people who talk about these things say the late Heath Ledger who stars as The Joker has put on an Oscar worthy performance. I was really sad to see Heath Ledger become late because I did enjoy his movies and him as an actor. Definitely cut short in life. I sincerely hope he gets the nod come Oscar time.

I've been checking out website post movie interview polls of people exiting the movie and suffice to say, this movie either meets or exceeds most viewers expectations.

I guess I better quit reading all about it and get my tail end to the movie.

For the last

Today marks the 6 -month anniversary (demi-anniversary?) of my status as a worker-bee.

For the last six months, I have caught the bus or sat in traffic (listening to Nathan and Nat on Nova, of course) to sit in front of a computer screen in a large capsule of concrete, steel and glass (not that I ever see much glass from my cubicle) for several hours, eat rice crackers and cottage cheese at my desk, get massive headaches from the lack of Vitamin-D, then go back home to forrage for tinned soup or whatnot, then collapse into bed, just to wake up and do it all over again.

(That sentence was long and exhausting for a reason. Any of you wannabe sub-editors who are clenching their jaws should desist and sigh with relief at the knowledge that yes, I know the rules of grammar, so I have the right to break them, a'iight?)

But what about weekends, you ask? How can today be the demi-anniversary when today is Saturday?

Because I am working today, thankyouverymuch.

My co-worker-bee has skipped town to visit the Pope the week we have a massive deadline (but to be fair, this mofo project shoulda been done months ago, and when she booked her leave we all assumed it would be gonekthxbai) and The Boss has me doing work I shouldn't even be doing. Let alone have the capacity to do. And I am freaking out about it.

I did get out to see The Dark Knight -- which is freaking AWESOME and they showed The X-Files: I Want to Believe trailer which looks like it's going to be EVEN MORE AWESOME -- this morning but I didn't get to sleep in because I knew I had to get to the first session or else the whole day would be wasted.

This nuerotic, bitching post probably shouldn't be here; I suppose I could've put it in my anonymous nuerotic-bitching blog, but I swear, I have a point.

My point is this:

I NEED A MOTHER-FUNKING HOLIDAY GOSHDARNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, my other point: people are way too overworked and we live in a society that is too fast-paced where we have too-high expectations on us and it is totally shit and we need to figure out a better way. Right now. Because this effing sucks, people. Yeah, I said "effing". You know it's bad.

I am just EXHAUSTED. My brain hurts. My body aches. I can't be arsed going to the shops to get anything decent for dinner and Lean Cuisines are NOT about "Looking After Yourself" unless you are some strange bot who survives on expensive cardboard beans. My two weeks' of regularly going to the gym is staring at me and in sad, lonely, mouth-gaping shock and I have even stopped caring about the fact my hair looks like I should be one of the principles in Wicked. The only upside is that The Boyfriend is on a graduates' junket with his work this weekend so at LEAST it doesn't matter that I haven't waxed my legs.

I feel the odd mix of catatonia and rage that signals an imminent breakdown, and I am freaking out.

There was a post on fabulous new (shiny new! Like 4-days-old new! NEW new!!) Perth blog Beyond Beeton that totally made me feel like I was in Oprah's audience (on one of the serious episodes not the ones with the free stuff, unfortunately -- wouldn't that just be freaking GREAT?) and I just wanted to nod all seriously and shout out "AMEN, SISTER" in a manner befitting a large, Southern, African-American lady. And I suppose I could have since there was no one in the office because EVERYONE IS ON HOLIDAYS.

But of course, I am a small South-Asian Australian girl, and even I would have thought it kind of out of place.

Anyway, I will replicate the fervor-inducing passages from the post "Feminism really needs to go away and leave me alone for a while" here:

There’s nothing more empowering than having your apron strings untied from the sink.

Unless you get untied from the sink so that you can trot off in a wool suit to your box on the terrace for every daylight hour and more besides, after which you will glamorously engage in up-to-the-minute witty banter with 40 of your nearest and dearest colleagues who you are dining with again. You then of course go home, ring your mother and actually listen to what she says, clean the toilet, put the bin out (you’re a liberated woman after all), read the paper and a few novels (see the witty banter point above), bake something nice to take to work tomorrow and save at least 15 children from starvation or tractor accidents or something, all while looking hopelessly alluring.

If you’re managing all that and vodka isn’t a part of your daily routine then I hate you and there is nothing for you here.

AMEN, SISTER. A-fricking-MEN.

I wonder if the other Buddhists will notice that I'm breaking a precept during our version of Lent if I crack open the sav-blanc in the fridge that I am looking after for a friend who left it at a work do and have totally forgotten to give back (because I do not function til I get off the bus and to Ristretto, and always forget to take it to work)?

Because I have a forbording sense of desperation and fear that everything is not going to be alright.

Ah well. At least I have blogging with which to vent.

PS -- Beeton, if you are reading this: I can't comment on your posts because it says I need to log in? But you're not on wordpress.com? Can you please check that? I would be sad if I can't comment, and I'm sure everyone here would *realise* how truly nutso I was if I resorted to posting here so that I could ping back to you.

As Ain't It Cool News reports, Arnie has been recast for the upcoming new Terminator trilogy kick-off Terminator Salvation.

Yup, read again!

They haven't politely cut his role from the new movies to establish a cool new branch of the Terminator franchise, no, of course not. They recast the role. With the guy on the right there =>

He's Roland Kickinger, of the same origin as Arnie (Austrian bodybuilder), and with an even cooler name, actually. Kickinger already starred as the current Governor of California in a biopic called See Arnold Run.

When do film makers finally realize that replacing an icon like Schwarzenegger is simply not the thing you do? I can live with a new Bilbo Baggins for the new Hobbit movies, but this is as awful as if you recast David Duchovny's Fox Mulder of The X-Files - without a warning during the seventh season - with someone like Zach Braff. Just won't work.

By the way, they really cast a new voice actor for the German synchronisation of Fox Mulder for the upcoming second X-Files movie I Want To Believe. HOW FRICKIN' POOR IS THAT!?

I mean, are you kidding me? After 201 episodes, after nine years of TV presence, after one motion picture, they erase the greatness of Benjamin Völz and replace him by whoever the new guy is! Arrr, the trailer really turns me off already...and all that just because Völz and FOX couldn't reach an agreement about Völz's payment. To hell with it, give him the money he deserves, he's one of our best voice actors!

Sigh, I'm really not wondering why I am so much more hyped by The Dark Knight than by the new X-Files movie. Go Joker!!

The Dark Knight comes out this week and you're probably thinking, what the hell am I going to do the rest of this summer? Well, if this latest batch of movie trailers is any indication, not much. For this week's "Best Case, Worst Case" I've decided to gather together the more questionable releases of the late summer, films I've deemed "summer afterthoughts."

Poorly-timed big-budget flicks, nausea-inducing romantic comedies and morally objectionable children's films, these are the sad selection of films that attempt to fill the gap between the summer blockbusters and the Oscar-baiting arthouse film season. These films simply can't compete against the bigger fish in the cinematic summer pool, so a late July/early August release date seems appropriate. By the end of this tour through the dregs of Hollywood, it will feel less like an adventure and more like a Bataan Death March. Well, here goes nothing:

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Since the release of the first Mummy film in 1999, the series appears to have strayed drastically from its nominal villain. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (effectively known as The Mummy 3) appears no different, supplanting the decrepit, bandage-bound antagonist with Jet Li, reprising his role from every film he's ever been in.

The close proximity in release dates between this and Brendan Fraser's other big-budget misadventure Journey to the Center of the Earth leads one to believe that the actor's M.O. this summer was, "I'll star in anything!"

Best Case: A decent, if confoundedly hollow, action-adventure in the spirit of Indiana Jones. The first film approached this only to falter down the stretch as the plot became increasingly predictable, but there's no reason to think The Dragon Emperor couldn't succeed where the other films failed. Right?

Worst Case: A clusterfuck of special effects and overindulgence (see, Van Helsing). The potential always exist with films like this to provide the audience with an abundance of eye-candy. Sometimes less is more, and films like The Mummy work best when presenting a great deal of restraint. Sadly, the trailer — complete with a CGI yeti, a three-headed dragon, a barrage of CGI arrows (for a film starring Jet Li, this is shamefully reminiscent of Hero) among other over-the-top oddities — does not reassure us of this.

The X-Files: I Want To Believe

Whoa! Talk about time traveling back to the nineties. This film is at least a decade late, especially considering that there was already an X-Files movie released at a more appropriate time.

Best Case: Let's put the goofy subtitle aside here and focus on the writing. The X-Files always featured top-notch writing and some truly compelling mysteries. With that in mind, the latest film has the ability to provide a much-loved series with a fitting coda. It will be interesting to see whether or not Chris Carter leaves his story open for yet another extraneous sequel or if he finally puts it to rest by tying up all the loose ends.

Worst Case: More of the same for a series that — like all long-running television shows — began to grow stale and repetitive in its twilight seasons. It's hard to gauge from the trailer, but this film feels like a retread of the first film and, sadly, interesting casting decisions (one feels that Xzibit was brought on to the film simply for alliterative purposes. Remember this, Mr. Singer, when the time comes for X-Men 4) certainly can't make up for shoddy screenwriting.

Mama Mia

Movies like this always perplex me. Is there some inherent humor in not knowing who your real dad is of which I'm not fully aware? I guess if you're forced to pick your dad out of a lineup of three, that must be when the hilarity ensues. It would all depend on the tone of the film and this one can go a number of ways: contrived dramedy, meretricious musical, conniving tear-jerker. Who knows? However, kudos to Merly Streep for demonstrating the positions she's willing to put herself in for the sake of acting.

Best Case: I may not be qualified to venture a guess as to the best case scenario with this film. I don't know, easy to fall asleep to? Bearable acting? Maybe the sound goes out at the particular screening I would hypothetically be attending? For me, the best case scenario would ultimately be not seeing this film at all. I think that's a good place to leave it.

Worst Case: See the above description. I can't seem to talk about this film in a positive context, so even an apparently objective take on it results in not-so-veiled criticism.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Assuming you watched the above trailer, there is absolutely no reason for me to describe this further. What you see is what you get. Horrible, horrible imagery that could have just as easily jumped from the pages of Dante's Inferno, or been spliced in with the gruesome journey through hell in Event Horizon without anyone taking notice.

Best Case: N/A

Worst Case: Remember the penultimate scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where the Nazi's finally open the Ark only to be struck by a blinding light that causes all their faces to melt? Well, I see this film having a similar effect on viewers. In fact, I suspect that the film itself doesn't exist outside of the brief trailer that's available (frankly, it just doesn't seem possible). Instead it serves as part of some massive government conspiracy to harvest the ignorant people of the world (the only possible target audience for this putrid trash) by luring them into the theater and obliterating their already vacant minds with some sort of mind-control ray gun (perhaps, for sake of consistency, fired by a wily chihuahua, or in an act of boredom just some random scientist in a sterile lab coat) turning them into brain-dead combatants that are then sent overseas to fight in Iraq.

Sound far-fetched? Seriously, would the alternative (i.e., this film actually existing in a feature-length format) be any more believable? Oh God, I sincerely hope not.

FORT WORTH, Texas — An enormous aircraft without transponders traveling up to 2,100 mph — at one time zooming toward President Bush's Crawford ranch — is similar to the mysterious object dozens reported seeing, according to radar documents examined by a group that studies unidentified flying objects.

"This shows ample evidence of UFO activity," said Kenneth Cherry, Texas director of the Mutual UFO Network, which has been studying phenomenon earlier this year in Stephenville and Dublin, about 75 miles southwest of Fort Worth. "They were turning at angles not possible by military aircraft."

His organization, called MUFON, requested documents from the Federal Aviation Administration, nearby military bases and other agencies under the Freedom of Information Act.

FAA spokesman Roland Herwig said Monday that he had not seen the radar information provided to MUFON and could not comment on it or the group's interpretation of the data.

MUFON requested reports from the night of Jan. 8, when several dozen people in Texas dairy country — including a pilot, county constable, business owners and former air traffic controller — reported seeing a large silent object with bright lights flying low and fast.

Some folks reported seeing military jets chasing it, which also was confirmed in the FAA radar documents.

After talking to witnesses, MUFON investigators ended up looking into 300 reported UFO sightings spanning several weeks and said most were probably planets, cloud formations or stars.

But Cherry said the FAA radar data, which was examined by a radar expert and an engineer who works with MUFON, indicates that some reports do not have logical explanations.

"When you look at that, combined with the witness reports — that's as close to evidence of UFOs as I've seen," he said.

The object was between 524 feet and 1,000 feet long, according to a MUFON report released earlier this month. It's unclear if radar picked up the same object at different times or more than one object, Cherry said.

The object was within 10 miles of Bush's ranch about 8 p.m., but the president was not there that night. MUFON only requested information until 8 p.m. that night, so it's unclear where the object went after that.

At times when radar picked up a slow-moving object and fast-moving object, it was at the same time and place as witnesses' accounts, according to the report. At one time, the object accelerated to 532 mph in about 30 seconds and decelerated to 49 mph in 10 seconds, the report stated, based on radar information.

"The authors cannot comment on the source or origin of this object, but it is clear to the authors that the unknown object was real and not imaginary," they said in the MUFON report.

And so do I - I want to believe that they haven't waited too long to put out this movie extending the storyline of one of my all time favorite TV shows, The X-Files.

Imho, the show was at its best and most interesting when plots involved the "The Truth Is Out There" theme rather than crime solving, but maybe that's just me. Once a fairly avid reader of science fiction, 'Stranger in a Strange Land' is still one of my favorite books - and I definitely felt like such while watching the darkly lit X-Files trailers!

Anyway, 'I Want to Believe' debuts on July 25 so get your ringtone of the show's theme song, view trailers and IPOD or share them with friends by visiting the film's website at:

http://www.xfiles.com/

It may be propaganda, but it's entertaining. And yes - Scully is lookin' good!

It's really easy to know if you'll be a fan of this book. Did you enjoy the X-Files? Hellboy? Anything to do with the Bigfoot legend or other creatures that go bump in the night? If so, you will most likely enjoy this book!

Proof follows the story of John "Proof" Prufrock, who just so happens to be Bigfoot. The series is essentially X-Files, but you get Proof in place of Mulder. No worries though, they introduce a character that seems to have a similar character style as Mulder by the name of Elvis. ;)

In the first issue Ginger has just joined The Lodge and is assigned to work with Proof as they investigate a reported sighting of El Chupacabra!

The first graphic novel is out and it collects the first 5 issues for a mere $9.99! You can't really beat that with Marvel and DC throwing $15-$25 graphic novels out there every week.

All in all, the book is a little cliche but I firmly believe that while not a book for everyone it will develop a strong loyal fan base and I plan to be part of it!

Το «The X-Files: I Want to Believe» θα λειτουργήσει 'αυτοτελώς' και η υπόθεση θα λαμβάνει χώρα έξι χρόνια μετά την τελευταία μας συνάντηση με τους ήρωες (όσο χρόνο μας χωρίζει από το τέλος της τηλεοπτικής σειράς το 2002).

I guess I have to have a first post on this blog. I've been taking a break from blogging lately (almost a year) so please excuse me if I'm out of practice.

Now down to buisness: The X-Files movie comes out in just over a week. I have to say, I'm really excited. I watched the final episode of X-Files today, and it did a good job of wrapping things up. The movie however will be a monster of the week type story, and it should be pretty awesome.

Just so you know, most of my posts are tech related. I just have X-Files on the brain tonight.

Herzog's latest dull, mainstream film, "Encounters at the End of the World"

I just came to a realization.

After I see "The Dark Knight" at 12:01 on Friday morning ... and then again at 3 a.m. ... and then probably again at 6 a.m. on IMAX ... after that I won't have anything to look forward to for a very long time.

The best of the big summer movies are through after "The Dark Knight." We're left with only a potentially not-awful "X-Files" movie and the probably really funny "Pineapple Express." But, as far as I'm concerned, summer's almost over.

It's time for moviegoers' brains to shift gears again, to get back into more serious, Oscar-ey fare.

But in the meantime, I'm going to be trying to see all of these little movies-that-could at the local arthouse.

Not the indie flicks that are going to be getting awards attention come late fall, the ones that only you and your movie-obsessed friends will have even heard of.

Goodbye, Batman. Hello, yellow subtitles.

"The Edge of Heaven" (Now in theaters)
From writer/director Faith Akin, who made the charming road comedy "In July" and the searing drama "Head-On," comes another critically acclaimed character study that examines the tenuous relationship between Turkey and Germany. Like "Head-On," this one supposedly puts human misery up-front-and-center for the first two acts, and then shifts into a sad and revealing aftermath.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"In Search of a Midnight Kiss" (RELEASE DATE: Aug. 1) Black and white comedy about finding love late at night.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Young People Fucking" (Now in theaters)
Examines the relationships of five couples through one sexual encounter. Sure, it's probably immature, crass, etc. But it also looks really, REALLY funny.

"Traitor" (RELEASE DATE: Aug. 27)
This one looks like a low-rent version of "The Fugitive" but with international intrigue. Don Cheadle plays a U.S. Special Ops badass who may or may not have betrayed the U.S., and Guy Pearce is the FBI agent on his tail.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Encounters at the End of the World" (Now in theaters)
After his successful feature-lenghth drama "Rescue Dawn," Werner "Crazier than a Shithouse Rat" Herzog returns to the documentary. Zee director travels to the far reaches of Antarctica to see why some people want to live there. Looks like surreally beautiful cinematography and a Herzogian examination of human nature. I'm there.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Bottle Shock" (Aug. 6)
It's a dramedy that tells the little-known-about historical event that put California wine on the map. In 1976, nobody thought American wine was worth a damn. But after a blind Paris wine-tasting contest, that all changed. The film follows a few of the real-life goofballs who helped give California wine its punch.

Ope, well, I've started getting inquiries about my whereabouts; so I thought I'd post and save you all from worrying. :)

BTW, the image above is me, just in case you're wondering. I got new glasses a couple of months ago. I went with dark rims, because my previous set had been clear and offered little definition to my face.

My friend who took this picture called it my "Seriously Disturbed Look" (pic description: it shows me giving thumbs up and staring very intently off at something).

I'll tell you, the reason I haven't posted in the last week is because I've been on a drawing kick. This next picture really doesn't do the drawing justice, but as of right now, it's all I've got to show you.

It's also done now. It's taken on a very technicolor, psychedelic look. I call it my "Dragon Flower," because everyone sees dragons in it. Can you see the spider? It'd done entirely in pen - took me a week.

As for today's title, did you know that another X-Files movie is coming out? I saw the first one in theater. Like twice. I owned it on VHS and then I bought it again on DVD. I mean, this is serious dedication here. I even watched the show most of the way through the last season, until it just got so ridiculous that I couldn't stand it anymore and I stopped watching.

I started watching in season 3; so that was a pretty lengthy amount of time that I invested in it. The earlier seasons were by far the best - like the first 5 or so.

So I turn on the tv, yes? And they're advertising this X-Files movie and all I can think to myself is "Geez, David Duchovny is old!" Back in my tween and teen years, Duchovny was easily a major special interest of mine. We're talking serious obsession here. You should have seen my room back in the day. It was covered in clippings from newspapers, magazines -- you name it, I had it on my walls. Plus, I owned almost all of the books, and had taped a great many of the episodes.

Okay, I know it's the big thing now to go and do movies with the same characters 5, 10, 17 years later, but I don't know if I can handle it in this case. Indiana Jones worked out pretty good - mostly. Blues Brothers was fun. I just don't know if I can stand to see them on the screen again. It's not like they're really known for anything else. I know that I haven't seen Gillian Anderson (Scully) in anything since then. And the only thing I can remember Duchovny doing was "Evolution." Try to tell me that that didn't suck.

At least the other characters have moved on and really gone out there and kept working. I know that I've seen Nicholas Lea in a few other things. Ah, Nicholas Lea. To some you will be known into infinity as "Krycek," but for me, you will always be "Ratboy." *sigh*

Just saw some cool poster art for the upcoming X-Files film which I thought I'd share. They're fake, but I thought they were cool.

Gia Milinovich, whose blog I follow regularly, is doing UK promotion for the film and put these on her Flickr account. She liked this Saul Bass tribute poster...

I, however, prefer the 60's poster tribute.

Also, looking forward to the film big time...
