I discovered this abandoned wiki page for a RPG campaign seeting about 3 days ago that had suprisingly alot of material for wiki site that has been dormant since like 2007... But yeah, it's kept me up till 2 in the AM for the last 2 nights......... working tedeaously at editing it....... I mean, I pulled a major overhaul on this site! I've corrected grammar (which was ATROUCIOUS for someone who was writing for a wiki page. Wouldn't you think they would at least try to look professional?), organized pages, wrote pages that had links to them but hadn't been written yet, written whole new pages, and all that stuff! I've been all hyped up on it, but now I'm just like "Ugh... I have to do some more?".

Le sujet peut tout à fait donner lieu à un article intéressant, mais certainement pas être présenté comme la news du moment. Et oui, les personnes qui ont repris cette information on souvent oublié de dire que la migration de tous les servers vers une même distribution est en cours... depuis deux ans.

Faire une news sur quelque chose vieux de deux ans, j'appelle ça du réchauffé.

En fait, je trouve que le plus marrant c'est que l'article source, celui de ComputerWorld, est correct et explique clairement la situation. Mais entre ComputerWorld et les sites francophones nous avons eu une perte et une modification de l'information.

C'est un fait de courant, d'ailleurs il est bien connus que plus une information est relayée plus elle pert en contenus et en exactitude (c'est le principe même du jeu du téléphone arabe). Donc cette déterioration de l'information est prévisible, sauf que là en un intermédiaire on perd une information simple mais importante. Nous sommes donc passé de "Depuis 2006 Wikimedia Foundation migre vers Ubuntu" à "Wikimedia Foundation migre vers Ubuntu".

Rien de dramatique me direz-vous? Je suis bien d'accord. En fait si j'en parle c'est parce que je trouve cet exemple assez symptomatique du "journalisme" sur internet où l'important est, souvent, le rendement et non plus la qualité.

Qu'aurait apportait cette information? Et bien ça aurait permis de répondre en partis à la question suivante, qui fut récurrente sur les sites et blogs:

Pourquoi Ubuntu et pas Debian? Pour plusieurs raisons mais voici les deux principales:

1/ En 2006, quand la décision a été prise Debian ne supportait pas x86_64, Ubuntu oui. (Le support de x86_64 est arrivé avec Debian Etch)

2/ Ubuntu a, contrairement à Debian, un cycle de dévellopement prévisible.

Desde su lanzamiento en 2001, Wikipedia ha usado Linux como sistema operativo para sus servidores. Hasta ahora, usaba una mezcla de versiones de Red Hat y Fedora, que se ha hecho más complicada de administrar según ha crecido el número de servidores necesario para soportar los más de dos millones de visitas diarias que tiene la enciclopedia. En unos meses, todos los servidores usarán la misma versión de Linux: Ubuntu 8.04.

La infraestructura tecnológica de Wikipedia ha ido creciendo para soportar la demanda de uno de los sitios más populares de Internet. A lo largo de los años, los servidores que Wikipedia iba añadiendo tenían distintas variantes de Red Hat y Fedora, lo que hacía cada vez más complicado instalar aplicaciones y mantener los servicios.

En unos meses, Wikipedia terminará una transformación radical que ya está en marcha, migrando sus 400 servidores a la versión de Linux Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. La mayoría de estos servidores están en Tampa (Florida) y el resto en centros secundarios en Corea del Sur y Amsterdam.

El cambio comenzó en 2006, cuando se aceleró el crecimiento del sitio, según ha explicado Brion Vibber, director técnico de Wikimedia Foundation, la organización responsable de Wikipedia. "Teníamos una mezcla de cosas: algunos Red Hat 9, algunos Fedora, varias versiones diferentes". Esa variedad de versiones era muy difícil de mantener con un equipo de solo cinco técnicos en todo el mundo.

La mezcla de versiones de Red Hat se debe al rápido crecimiento de Wikipedia, que entonces estaba mantenida por un grupo de técnicos voluntarios que usaban lo que tenían disponible. En solo 18 meses, la enciclopedia online pasó de necesitar 15 servidores a 200, según Vibber.

Canonical, la empresa que desarrolla Ubuntu, ofrece la misma versión del producto tanto a los clientes que contratan el servicio de soporte como a los que se descargan la versión gratuita de su web. Red Hat pasó en 2003 a diferenciar la versión de pago, llamada Red Hat Enterprise Linux, y la versión libre, que se llamó Fedora y que tiene no tiene soporte oficial de Red Hat.

Hoy, la idea de programas de concursos en los que se pone a los participantes en situaciones ridículas, sigue vigente. Japón, por ejemplo, es un experto en este campo con programas como Takeshi´s Castle (conocido en España como "Humor Amarillo").

Sin embargo, hoy la idea se lleva un poco más allá y, si bien no pierde esa escencia bizarra que te hace cagar de risa, el asunto se puso un poco más serio. Dos programas que dan ejemplo de esto son Baikingu y Sasuke. Siendo ambos de Japón, el primero se conoce en occidente por la versión norteamericana que, al mejor estilo supermatch, emite el mismo programa nipón pero con locutores yanquis comentando lo que sucede. Esta versión es conocida como "Viking: The Ultimate Obstacle Course".

En el caso de Sasuke, se realizó en Estados Unidos el mismo proceso de Baikungu, y se lo rebautizó Ninja Warrior (nada que ver con los Samurai Warriors que pasaba Magic). Como el nombre occidental de Baikungu lo indica, estos juegos son como grandes carreras de obstáculos que llegan a límites en los que los competidores deben demostrar un grado asombroso de destreza, fuerza y resistencia.

Makoto Nagano, un ponja muy capo, fue el único en llegar a la final de Viking (Baikingu) y que, casualmente, también terminó el Ninja Warrior (Sasuke). No se dan una idea lo ásperos y complicados que son los obstáculos que se tienen que superar para ganar estos programas... yo, la verdad, no sé como corno hacen estos ponjas (son demasiados grosos). Pero bueno, lo dejo a su criterio, juzguen por ustedes mismos...

Hasta ahora los servidores que mantenían Wikipedia en línea, utilizaban Sistemas Operativos Red Hat y Fedora.

El tema no es menor si pensamos que su infraestructura técnica y humana es bastante reducida, contando con sólo cuatro personas remuneradas y tres que trabajan de forma voluntaria.

Estos servidores Ubuntu tendrán que soportar más de dos millones de visitantes diarios, a la página de la enclopedia y a otros del mismo grupo como  Wikisource, Wikiquote y Wikinews.

Keistimewaan

Keistimewaan Wikipedia adalah selain menyajikan informasi yang biasa ditemui di dalam sebuah ensiklopedia, ia juga memuat artikel-artikel yang biasanya ditemukan di dalamalmanak, majalah spesialis, dan topik-topik berita yang masih hangat.

Wikipedia berawal sebagai projek sampingan Nupedia, ensiklopedia bebas online yang artikelnya ditulis oleh para ahli. Larry Sanger, yang mendirikan Nupedia bersama Jimmy Wales, melontarkan ide mengenai ensiklopedia berbasis wiki pada 10 Januari 2001 dimilis Nupedia ^[10]. Lima hari kemudian Wikipedia pun secara resmi diluncurkan.

Isi Wikipedia dapat diciptakan oleh penggunanya. Pengunjung di Wikipedia juga dapat mengubah artikel, dan banyak yang melakukannya. Halaman-halaman selalu diubah, jadi, tidak ada artikel yang pernah selesai. Perusakan

Salah satu wacana utama di dalam Wikipedia adalah "perusakan" atau vandalisme; kekonyolan atau menyinggung artikel situs ini. Ada banyak orang yang melakukannya hanya demi mendapatkan pengalaman mengubah halaman internet.

"Karena Wikipedia adalah proyek radikal yang bebas dan terbuka, ia menarik unsur anarkis," pengakuan Larry Sanger kepada Wired News. "Untungnya, banyak dari kita yang berkeinginan untuk bertahan terhadap perusakan... dan menyingkirkannya dengan segera."

 

Perangkat keras

Server-server Wikimedia di Tampa

Wikipedia dijalankan dengan memakai perangkat lunak MediaWiki oleh server-server milik Yayasan Wikimedia. Sampai dengan 13 Mei 2006 Wikipedia dan proyek-proyek Wikimedia lainnya dijalankan oleh 175 server yang terletak di 4 lokasi berbeda yaitu di Tampa-Florida-Amerika Serikat, Paris-Perancis,Amsterdam-Belanda, serta di lokasi Yahoo!.

Perincian server menurut lokasinya adalah sebagai berikut.

Ok, à primeira vista parece que estão a tentar mandar o homem cá abaixo, mas se olharem com atenção vão chegar à triste conclusão que os tipos só queriam arranjar o ar-condicionado. Para além do descarado risco que o desenrascado está a correr e a sublime posição do seu segurador, reparem bem no artista da varanda… Um gajo como ele, para além do chefe e grande impulsionador da ideia, só pode dizer uma de duas imbecilidades:
- Quim, não te preocupes que estou a segurar-te.
Ou, a minha preferida:
-Quim, não olhes para baixo.
Eu ficava muito surpreendido se fosse por ele que o McGyver testasse a gravidade de um 5º andar e a solidez da calçada.

Apesar de este exemplo ter tanto de caricato, como ridículo, serve bem para introduzir o tema que vou desenvolver.

Desde que aqui estou, existe algo que me deixa sempre muito surpreendido (mesmo que, principalmente durante os últimos tempos, já esteja mais preparado): a capacidade que os Americanos não têm para fazer algo diferente do que aquilo que lhes foi ensinado, ou para resolver alguma situação que não esteja prevista by the book.

Para ser mais explícito, vou relatar dois dos mais recentes episódios, que considero ridículos, em que os Americanos resolveram as situações da maneira mais complicada possível.

Episódio I

4 patos acabados de nascer (do tamanho de uma mão de uma pessoa) meteram-se no Spa. Ao contrário da piscina, a berma do Spa é mais alto e os patinhos não conseguiam sair de lá.

Assim, lá reportei a situação e, passado uns minutos, tinha a equipa toda da Recreation à volta do Spa.

Os 40m que se seguiram foram a coisa mais fantástica e estúpida a que eu já assisti: uma pessoa dentro do Spa (que é pequenino) a tentar tirar os patos um por um da água. Escusado será dizer que a mãe dos patos andava maluca e a tentar proteger os patinhos. Assim, a situação foi-se desenvolvendo da seguinte maneira: a senhora, a muito custo, lá conseguia agarrar um pato e po-lo fora da água. Como o patinho via os irmãos e a mãe lá dentro, voltava a entrar. As outras 5 pessoas que estavam à volta do Spa, tentavam a todo o custo impedir que os patos voltassem para a piscina.

A técnica poderá parecer boa mas o que é certo é que, 40m depois, todos os patos continuavam dentro do Spa.

No entretanto eu estava a mudar de turno e, cansado de me rir tanto, fui lá dar uma ajuda: peguei num dos tubos dos lifeguards e numa toalha, meti o tubo a flutuar na água junto à berma, estendi uma toalha para fazer uma espécie de ponte entre a água e o chão e fui-me embora. Sem exagerar, 30s depois, todos os patos estavam fora da piscina.

O melhor de tudo isto foi a admiração de todos os que gastaram 40m do seu dia a correr atrás de patinhos, ao verem a situação resolvida sem esforço e sem andar a ser perseguido por uma mãe-pata enraivecida.

Episódio II

À umas semanas atrás, estiveram 4 crianças brasileiras na piscina onde eu trabalho. Aconteceu que as crianças, que tinham entre 3 e 12 anos, só falavam Português.

Os pais dos miúdos estavam no Florida Mall e deixaram as crianças sozinhas durante a tarde toda na piscina. As regras da piscina dizem que, menores de 18 anos não podem estar sem os pais na piscina. E os miúdos só estavam a fazer asneiras :p.

Os managers andavam a tentar expulsa-los da piscina (e po-los os 4 sozinhos no quarto do hotel) mas eu, com jeitinho, fui conseguindo que eles deixassem os miúdos ficar por lá (à custa de uma senhora que se responsabilizou por eles).

No entretanto, eu fui para intervalo e a senhora que estava responsável pelas crianças saiu da piscina.

Resolução do problema à Americana: só o Tiago é que fala Português, o Tiago está no intervalo (o que significa que estava na cafetaria, a 30s da piscina), queremos expulsar os miúdos da piscina, os miúdos só sabem falar Português, vamos ficar aqui a olhar para os miúdos e esperar que o Tiago venha do intervalo para falar com eles.

Assim, durante 50m 2 managers estiveram a vigiar 4 crianças, à espera que eu saísse do intervalo.

Quando eu lhes perguntei porque razão não me foram chamar (fazendo-me perder 2m do meu intervalo e resolvendo logo o problema), responderam que eu estava em intervalo e que no intervalo não se trabalha. Durante 50m todos os assuntos da piscina ficaram pendentes, à espera que o Tiago saísse do intervalo, porque o Tiago não podia ser incomodado durante a pausa.

Isto para chegar onde: desde que cá estou, por diversas coisas simplicíssimas, coordinators e managers já quase que me deram beijos, pela maneira simples e fácil com que resolvi diversos problemas (e, segundo o que falo com todos os Portugueses, isto é uma situação generalizada, entre managers, coordinators e cast members Portugueses). A maneira como eles bloqueiam quando algo diferente lhes surge pela frente, a mim, chateia-me. Às vezes dá para chorar a rir, outras vezes dá para chorar de tristeza pois nunca vi tantas pessoas a fazer as coisas exactamente da mesma maneira e tantas pessoas a bloquear exactamente da mesma maneira, quando confrontados com problemas simples, mas que não estão previstos no livro...

Outra das coisas que me fascina, é a quantidade de regras e procedimentos que os Americanos têm e o modo como eles os seguem cegamente. Tal como no caso descrito, em que chamar-me para resolver o problema e fazer-me perder 2m do meu intervalo não custava absolutamente nada, todos os dias deparo-me com situações ridículas em que, um simples acção resolvia todo um grande problema, e em que eles (Americanos), dão uma volta gigante, cumprem todos os procedimentos previstos, verificam se não existe mais nenhum modus operandi adicional e, no fim, resolvem o problema. (eu presenciei um excelente exemplo disto à 2 semanas: a coordenadora tinha de contactar a cozinha por causa de um bolo desaparecido. O que faz disto um bom exemplo é que a cozinha fica a 5m a pé do sítio do qual ela estava a telefonar...)

Concluindo: estou surpreendido pelo facto da grande maioria das pessoas com quem trabalho (desde as posições mais básicas, às de maior responsabilidade) não conseguir pensar pela própria cabeça e por, quando se vêem confrontados com uma situação que o necessite, bloquearem e tentarem encontrar uma solução escrita para o problema.

Did you know that Sir Richard Branson is in James Bond: Casino Royale?? Well, Brad Pitt makes a very short cameo in Dead Man's Chest - watch it, and see if you can spot him...

Having recently watched this film for the 3rd time recently, I think out of the trilogy, this film is by far the best, especially in terms of the over-all quality of the production; from the music of Hans Zimmer, to the superb special effects of Industrial Light & Magic, and of course the acting, which is actually very good - since I suppose we would expect such a swash buckler to have terrible acting, but really the acting complements the story and premise of the story. Moreover - there is actually a very impressive line of good actors in this movie, and great performances - Johnny Depp, who I think is perfect as Jack Sparrow; Stellan Skarsgård as Bootstrap Bill; Tom Hollander as Cutler Beckett; and Bill Nighy as Davey Jones is just brilliant, considering that whilst shooting, Nighy didn't have no mask to hide behind, and so the facial expressions that we see in the final version (tentacles and all) is based upon his original performance. The character of Captain Sao Feng is wholly convincing, (played by Chow Yun-Fat) equivalently - Geoffrey Rush portrayal of Hector Barbossa is done with such conviction and is a pleasure to watch.

The production budget was $225 million, and world wide gross revenues of $1,066,179,725 (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=piratesofthecaribbean2.htm), whereas the Production Budget for The Curse Of The Back Pearl was: $140 million and 500% gross worldwide revenue, At World's End Production Budget being: $300 million with 200% gross worldwide revenue, is it plain to see that the investment made by at these increments reflect the confidence in the success of the trilogy, and also is reflected in the over-all quality, as I have said, of the production.

What I find particularly interesting in Dead Man's Chest are the themes that are explored through-out the duration of the movie. It seems that the writers (Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio) derive a great deal of their style from proverbs, and there are strong allegories to various aspects of human and personal development and exploration, and explores many of the themes of individual freedom, the destructive force of globalisation over tradition and folk culture - indeed, at times, the script can almost appear to consist of true and meaningful wisdom. Combined with the superb visual effects, and performances, the movie appeals on many levels.

If I was make perhaps one observation and dare I say criticism - then it would be with the performances of Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann - OH! Incidentally, Jonathan Pryce as Governor Weatherby Swann is also brilliant, especially the scene near the end, upon the Black Pearl's return from the chest of Davey Jones, where Weatherby Swann sits within a small fishing boat, having died and presumably floating upon an endless sea waiting for Davey Jones to fulfill his obligation of delivering him to the other-side; is it very poignant. As I was saying, I feel that Bloom and Knightley's performances are somewhat overly self-conscious, since I feel that as actors, they are somewhat aware of their own reactions and expressions, and that they perhaps attempt to hold-back in their portrayal of emotion or reaction. But, having said that Knightley is good at acting angrily, and Bloom is good at acting sadness and sorrow. Personally though, I did not get lost in my suspended disbelief by their performances. Which I find slightly disappointing, since it is the actions of these two characters that ultimately drive the plot forward, and it is by these two characters that the film concludes. Personally, I would have been more pleased to see a more involved and intense performance, but then again, given the movie is essentially a comedy/adventure/action swash buckler, I also accept that their performance fitted well into the over-all nature of the story.

Finally, the creativity of the production and cast is evident in the final release, and the film consists of some brilliant cinematography and highly stylised and visual scenes. A testament to Gore Verbinski vision.

After a thoroughly panned presidential debate, a wide-ranging coalition is calling on Barack Obama and John McCain to change the rules for the last presidential debate to guarantee that voters get the answers they deserve.

The group, which includes the likes of MoveOn, The Next Right, The Huffington Post and Wikipedia, sent a letter to the presidential candidates Friday pressuring them to change what they called a “lacking” debate deserving of ridicule from the likes of Saturday Night Live.

At a minimum, the group demands that moderator Bob Schieffer be allowed to ask follow up questions to the candidates, who many believe have been allowed to skate through debates without providing answers to fundamental and important questions.

While the last debate did include questions from the Internet, the group is demanding that the question process be more transparent and accountable. The letter asks that questions be submitted and voted on online, and that the moderator be allowed “broad discretion” to follow up on the candidates' answers.
The final debate is Wednesday October 15.

In our final section we will be looking into the comics and how they have added to the SH series.

The SH comics have been running for quite a few years now and although they do not sit canon with the stories from the games, they do add more insight into the thoughts of the minds that get trapped in SH.

At this point in time we have seen quite a few stories, we have: -

8. Sinner's Reward

The original comic was an unreleased graphic novel that never saw the light of day, thankfully the same fate did not befit Dying Inside and we got our first look at a new take on SH.

I am not going to go into too much detail on each comic, if you want that then go HERE to wikipedia.  What I am going to talk about is why I love them and why I believe they are worthy additions to the series.

Each comic has it's own artist, this means we never get the same images twice, while some characters do return in different stories the different take on the style can make it feel fresh every time.  Much like the comics for Konami's other great series Metal Gear Solid, what we see from the game can be drastically different when shown through the medium that is the comic book.

Each story takes us into the twisted town for a look at the characters that have been drawn to it and while some find a home in SH others are forced to face what they truly are. This same premise is also apparent throughout the games, each character has there own demons and this small town mearly shows them the truth behind their masks.

Each of the comics has appeared as either a short series i.e 5 comics one story, or as a stand alone book, this is true apart from one story and that one is THE HUNGER.  As discussed in part 2 of this retrospective the PSP got the UMD known as "The Silent Hill Experience" and it is on this disc that this comic appears, in fact it is the only place it appears, meaning that if you are after the whole set then you really should have brought this disc.  Like the MGS comic on UMD, THE HUNGER got the animated treatment featuring voices and sound affects to assist in the watching of the tale.  The whole story actually took about 40 minutes to watch and is quite an experience I must say (it was my first look at animated comics), it really helped to drive the story to the viewer.

Animated comics like SH, MGS and Dead Space, really drive home the background behind a game, they alow you to take a look at unseen chapters and really get a feel for what the developers where trying to convey to their audience and boy do I love it.

Like so many others SH has a great story, but it also has a great amount of media to drive that story and I can only hope that everyone who see's this series no matter the media will get a different experience from it, SH will talk to us all in different ways and can really get into the viewers mind and that is it's greatest charm.

So if you read this I hope you have enjoyed it, I really love this series and I hope you all will too, so to part as always this has been an Elbobo-hoff production later.

The sign is attested in business correspondence between British North America and Mexico in the 1770s, as referring to the Spanish-Mexican peso.^[1] The piastre was known as "Spanish dollar" in British North America, and in 1785, it was adopted as U.S. currency, together with both the term "dollar" and the $ sign. Interestingly, the first instance of the symbol on U.S.A. currency is on the reverse of a $1 coin first issued in February 2007, under the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005.^[2]

The sign's ultimate origins are not certain,^[3] though it is widely accepted that it comes from the Spanish coat of arms, which carries the two Pillars of Hercules and the motto Plus Ultra in the shape of an "S".

The most popular explanation is that the dollar sign derives from the Spanish coat of arms engraved on the Spanish colonial silver coins "Real de a Ocho" ("piece of eight") or Spanish dollar under circulation in the Spanish colonies of America and Asia, as well as in the English Thirteen Colonies and later the U.S. and Canada.

But as Christopher Columbus in 1492 travelled to the Americas, the saying was changed to Plus Ultra – as there was more out there.^[5] This symbol was especially adopted by Charles V and was a part of his coat of arms as a symbol of his American possessions and riches. When the Spanish conquistadores found gold and silver in the New World, Charles V's symbol was stamped on the coins made from these metals. L’apparition de nouvelles technologies numériques permet aux institutions culturelles et aux artistes de faire un grand pas en avant. En effet, grâce à Internet, on peut notamment numériser un grand nombre de documents (archives, photos, œuvres d’art, …), ce qui permet au grand public de les consulter, et ce qui assure leur préservation.

Mais une grande question se pose quant à la diffusion massive de données : le droit d’auteur. Celui-ci, divisé en deux parties, le droit moral et le droit patrimonial, donne à l’auteur ou à un éditeur un droit exclusif sur son œuvre. Le copyright, représenté par le sigle ©, est un des moyens permettant de protéger une œuvre. Ainsi, pour la photographie par exemple, il n’est pas autorisé de prendre une photo sur Internet et de la diffuser sur un blog, un article de journal, …, que la visée soit commerciale ou non. Il faut donc avoir l’autorisation du photographe, qui lui-même doit demander la permission aux personnes ou au propriétaire du bâtiment représentés sur la photo.

Cependant, on peut consulter sur Internet des sites proposant des images libres de droit (getty images, photo-libre, …). Une banque d’image libre, wikimédia commons, s’est ainsi créée dans le but d’illustrer les articles de wikipédia, ainsi que pour donner naissance à l’existence d’un « conservatoire central de contenu libre ». Afin que les photographies présentes sur ce site soient réellement libres de droit, le photographe doit ajouter à son œuvre une licence GNU FDL (ou GFDL). Le but de cette licence est de donner à chacun la possibilité de copier ou de redistribuer une image commercialement ou non, que cette image soit originale ou modifiée. Cette licence est fondée sur le principe de copyleft (« non droit d’auteur »).

La question des droits d’auteur est donc très complexe. En effet, beaucoup de documents étant protégés, il faut se méfier dès qu’il s’agit de les réutiliser. A l’inverse, il est tout à fait légitime de réutiliser un document possédant une licence GFDL.

Dans le but d’améliorer les articles de wikipédia, un projet a été lancé par wikimédia commons. Toute personnes furent ainsi invitées à prendre des photos de lieux culturels, inédits ou non, afin d’illustrer ses articles qui jusqu’à présent étaient pauvres en images.
