Once, not too long ago in the Enterprise people found themselves working ever so diligently and thought everything was just honky dory thank you very much.

legs for getting places... (by scottobear, cc)

Web 2.0 tools have made it easier for people to form groups; ranging from temporary flocks of people with a similar interest to close-knit communities, increasingly part of extensive interconnected networks.

Thanks to Web2.0 people can connect and organize, without a manager or a managing structure to lead or frame this organization process. “The power of organizing without organizations” is how Clay Shirky calles it. Others have used the term “non-organizations” or “ultra-lights”. Many Internet mediated groups are non-organizations, in the sense that they do not have a traditional structure or legal entity like a foundation or a association, or a company.

An example is the group of dairy farmers in rural Portugal I am part of, convening around a blog and an email group, and meeting f2f a few times a year for an excursion or study day. There is real value for learning and socializing, there are some shared values, a shared identity. But it comes without the things that used to be part and parcel of more traditional organizations. There is no mailing address, no letterhead paper, no statutes or articles of association, no official “Committee” and no member administration.

When the dairy farmers network wanted to liaise with the traditional Farmers Union in Portugal, they were not accepted unless they would be a “real” association. The “ultra-light” can not be eligible for EU subsidies for training or extension, even though that is what it does.
When hiring a venue to convene, or a leaflet to print, one member has to personally take the financial responsibility up-front. When afterwards members chip in, they can not be given a receipt. The group can not own anything, not hire anybody.

A solution for the non-organizations might be to go the traditional way: formalize the group and rig an organizational structure along traditional lines, depending on the preferences: an association, a company or a charity. But this seems more complex than strictly needed, it would raise transaction costs, and more importantly: what would be lost in the process?
The lightness is a relief, it is felt that the lightness is conducive for learning, for attracting the right people for the right purpose. The agility, the single focus of a group to do its thing, and to stop being a group in case the energy ebbs is unique and refreshing.

This was the conclusion of the case study i did last year:
“Web 2.0 supported communities have the potential to support social organization for development, linking different actors to local development. The organizational models that we avail of at present do not match the new dispersed form of organization. To promote autonomy, sustainability and replicability of communities, further thinking is required.”

John D Smith and I have done some “further thinking”.

We have looked at existing communities, many of them “ultra-lights”, we have reminded each other to look and read with the question in mind:

"How can communities get legs and pockets"?

Legs for getting places, doing the thing it is they want to do;
pockets for being able to pay their way for as long as they want to.

You need legs before you can have pockets, but too large pockets might get in the way for good walking.

We have come across many communities that are -in whatever way- struggling with these questions: some for lack of pockets, others for getting their pockets filled and stopping walking to spend money or get more.

Trying to think of what would be needed to get legs and pockets, one thing might be collective money management tools. A tool to make international online banking "visible" to a larger community, in order for the community leaders to move money in an accountable way. It should be simple, but not too simple; communities probably want to differentiate several "stashes" of money. Read John's blogpost about it here.

So over the last several months I, like tens of millions of people, have been using Facebook to find and stay in touch with friends and my biz network. As I used it more and more, I became more annoyed with how long it would take me to send messages, write on walls, etc. So I've written a Firefox add-on to make that easier. Called 'UltimateFacebook,' all you do is right-click a hyperlinked name in a news feed or a person's profile image/thumbnail and a menu will appear. You can now send messages, write on walls, poke users and add or view friends with 1-click instead of the 2-3 it normally takes to get to the page to normally do the action. I've been playing with it for the last several months and have had about 300 people helping me test it. It's rather stable at this point, but is an alpha product. Holler with ideas and/or feedback, but definitely try it out.

Beides denke ich sollte in „The wisdom of crowds“ vorhanden sein.

Surfing the net I came across an excellent tool: TIME TUBE. If you enter a key word, the system creates a timeline for you with videos taken mainly from you tube. I haven't used it yet in any of my classes, but I believe it has a great potential for the English classroom (and for most of other subjects too). You can use it for practising narrative tenses, dealing with history topics, current news and whatever you can imagine. I'm planning to use it for discussing with my students the economic situation in our country (Argentina). I'm sure that you will have plenty more ideas. Why not share them with us?

[sourcecode language='php']
<?
class Thread{
var $func;
var $arg;
var $thisFileName;
var $fp;
var $host;
var $port;
function Thread($host,$port=""){
$this->host = $host;
if ($port != ""){
$this->port = $port;
}else{
$this->port = 80;
}
$this->thisFileName = $_SERVER["SCRIPT_NAME"];
}
function setFunc($func,$arg=false){
$i=0;
$this->arg = "";
if ($arg){
foreach ($arg as $argument){
$this->arg .= "&a[]=".urlencode($argument);
}
}
$this->func = $func;
}
function setPort($port){
$this->port = $port;
}
function setHost($host){
$this->host = $host;
}
function start(){
$this->fp = fsockopen($this->host,$this->port);
$header = "GET ".$this->thisFileName."?threadrun=1&f=".urlencode($this->func).$this->arg." HTTP/1.1\r\n";
$header .= "Host: ".$this->host."\r\n";
$header .= "Connection: Close\r\n\r\n";
fputs($this->fp,$header);
}
function getreturn(){
$flag=false;
while (!feof($this->fp)) {
$buffer = fgets($this->fp, 4096);
if ($flag){
$output .= $buffer;
}
if (trim($buffer) == ""){
$flag = true;
}
}
return unserialize(trim($output));
}
}
if (isset($_GET['threadrun'])){
$arg_str = "";
$i=0;
if (isset($_GET['a'])){
foreach($_GET['a'] as $argument){
if ($i == 0){
$arg_str .= '"'.urldecode($argument).'"';
}else{
$arg_str .= ",".'"'.urldecode($argument).'"';
}
$i++;
}

    }
eval("\$return = ".$_GET['f']."(".$arg_str.");");
echo serialize($return);
exit;
}

?>

[/sourcecode]

[sourcecode language='php']
<?php
include_once("Thread.php");
function get($num)
{
$out = file_get_contents("http://localhost:8080/tesi/crawling/worker.php?num=".urlencode($num));
return time()." ".$out;
}

for ($p=0; $p<6; $p++) {
$thread[$p] = new Thread("localhost",8080);
$thread[$p]->setFunc("get",array($p));
$thread[$p]->start();
}

for ($p=0; $p<6; $p++) {
echo $thread[$p]->getreturn()."
";
}
?>
[/sourcecode]

E di worker.php:

[sourcecode language='php']
<?
sleep(5-$_GET['num']);
echo "thread ".$_GET['num'];
?>
[/sourcecode]

Enjoy!

Hi, just wanted to update our blog as it has been a while since my last posting! Deirdre and Grace have been busy writing posts about our company and what we have been doing, which has been crazy busy the last few months! All good though, keeps us on our toes!

On a recent trip to North America I was really impressed by the level of support and passion in Web2.0 but also in Mobile Internet usage, I think you guys use the Internet on your phones a lot more than us Europeans! Which is good for Zinadoo, of course, as USA is our largest and most active market today! When I think back 18 months to when we first launched Zinadoo Site Creation tools, we were engaging with the market and a lot of our time was spent educating users on the benefits of the mobile Internet - things like poor download speeds, weak search, multiple borwsers, high data charges and lack of content....the usual barriers out there! BUT we have seen a dramatic improvement in all of these areas, and now, in our market and customer engagement we are not spending as much time educating but have now moved onto a different level. How can a business benefit from having a mobile Internet presence, and what can we do to help them promote and market themselves using this medium!

We are doing some interesting work with the Dotmobi Mobile Advisory group as well around mobile advertising and mobile standards compliance, and planning on a big iLoveMobileWeb campaign as well which is very exciting. So many great events coming up over the summer and Nubiq are going to be driving promotion of these events over the Mobile Internet! Should be fun!

Warning: setlocale() [function.setlocale]: Passing locale category name as string is deprecated. Use the LC_* -constants instead in C:\wamp\www\scuttle\includes\php-gettext\gettext.inc on line 131

This Project will NOT be updated ANY MORE.

(cf. Why is $foo[bar] wrong?).

Flickr is a very popular photo-sharing site. Library of Congress (LC) has launched the project not only for increasing accessibility but also asking people put tags, comments and notes on images so that LC get more information for their collection. LC has putted on view 1,500 black and white photos from 1910s and 1,615 color photos from 1930s and 1940s, which copyright were expired.

I haven't had a lot of time to write these days. School is winding down and end-of-year details are winding up: budgets, purchasing, NCLB applications, and many, many events. I wanted to share a few things that I've read and watched lately:

The first, in following with the end-of-year theme, is the commencement speech by Barbara Kingsolver. I'm a big fan of hers. I really enjoy the humor she injects in to her writing (and this speech) as well as the content she writes about. If you haven't read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle yet, I highly recommend it. Here's a quote (from the more serious side of her speech):

In the last 30 years our material wealth has increased in this country, but our self-described happiness has steadily declined. Elsewhere, the people who consider themselves very happy are not in the very poorest nations, as you might guess, nor in the very richest. The winners are Mexico, Ireland, Puerto Rico, the kinds of places we identify with extended family, noisy villages, a lot of dancing. The happiest people are the ones with the most community.

The second piece is a video called "Learning to Change" by the Digital Arts group at the Pearson Foundation for CoSN. It's another video that you should show to teachers and stakeholders in your schools. Take a look:
