Truman and I were on campus yesterday praying that we would meet key people in the fraternities that would help start a movement to reach students in the party scene. There are two Asian fraternities on campus that are on completely opposite sides of the campus. We went to the first house and it was completely empty, then we walked across campus to the second one, which was completely empty as well. A little disappointed, we decided to wait around for a little while to see if anyone would stop by. A few minutes later a car pulls up and parks behind the house. A girl walks out from behind the house and we started talking to her. We asked about her relationship with the fraternity, what the fraternity was like, who the key influential people were, and if there were any spiritual needs in the community. We were surprised with how forth coming she was, even with names and phone numbers of key people that she knew. It turns out that she is a Christian and is dating one of the guys in the house. She also has a heart to reach people in the house and bring them to church (which just happens to be the same church that Truman and I both attend). She is excited to meet up with us along with her boyfriend, so that we can share with her boyfriend and answer some questions that he has. This was a total answer to prayer as we were racking our brains as to how to find key people in the greek system. As we wrapped up our conversation, she mentioned that usually she parks in the back of the house and goes in the back door, and when she saw us, she wanted to avoid us, but for some reason came through the front door anyway and talked to us. We definitely see God's hand in all of this and are excited to see what God does in the greek system through this girl.

UT Lady Vols have always given back to the community - particularly through their ongoing support of our area AYSO soccer programs.

Members of the three-time Southeastern Conference champion squad and staff have hosted several events for the region's youngest soccer players - such as the AYSO day which will be held on this Sat (Oct. 12.)

"We are always looking for ways to give back to the community, and clinics, such as this one, are a perfect example," said Tennessee head coach Angela Kelly. "It is great for the young kids to have role models and to have the opportunity to interact with the current student-athletes."

At the mini-clinics, you will find several skill stations, staffed by the Lady Vols. The kids always have a great time and the games are a fun way to teach skills like shooting, dribbling, heading, passing and juggling. Oh, and occasionally Jaimel Johnson and Kylee Rossi aren't the only Vol SuperStars you'll find at the stadium:

You know what’s annoying? When I repeatedly hear my name in Korean during a chat between my co

You know what's annoying? When I repeatedly hear my name in Korean during a chat between my co-teachers, and no one tells me what they're saying about me. Then usually they go on with the chat... "Andrea joisdjfoijseofsodijfosidfdifo 'wei-guk' lkajsdlfjsodifoemfijfosdjf Andrea 영어 (English) blah blah..." and I'm like w...t...f... are you talking about?

Ahh so things are carrying on pretty uneventfully here in my little bubble within the Korean peninsula. Oh actually yesterday I FINALLY signed up to get a cell phone! Alex's co-teacher Gui-Duk (or Iris) helped us out. I've never been so excited about a stupid cell phone, but I think 2 months of sloppily coordinating meeting places and using Skype with a bad connection to call people is enough. We didn't make it to the cell company until they were about to close, so they told me to come pick up my stuff today instead... I'm so impatient! On the way to the cell phone shop Iris and I passed a couple of lazy cats laying on the street corner in the sunlight. I thought they were adorable but Iris freaked out! So strange that so many Asians are afraid of animals! I guess here in Seoul there isn't really any room for pets, so kids aren't exposed to them early on. I also know one other Asian who is terrified of all animals... especially one named Grayson (WINK WINK). Be warned about coming to my house in the future... I am going to practially own a freaking zoo & I can't wait!

Yesterday I also had to give a level test to some of the students who want to be in my after-school English program. The program is meant for the most advanced students among several elementary schools in our area (including mine), so we had to give them a speaking test in order to determine whether they should be placed in the intermediate or advanced program. Most of the students who applied want to attend a new international middle school which gives classes in English. Those students who get into the international school and are able to take classes in English will have the best chance of getting into an American university when the time comes. That opens up a whole new world of opportunity for them, so starting young is really key. By taking my advanced English class they will be given 'points' toward attending that middle school. Anyway, the level test was kind of annoying because I was SO HUNGRY the whole time, lol. We had each student come in and sit in front of us, then we let them choose a secret question to answer from folders A-E. The questions were anything from 'what did you do when you got home from school yesterday?' to 'how do you feel about speaking English?'. The students' levels were vastly different. One girl came in and listened to me read the question, then stared at me nervously and completely silently for about 2 minutes straight. I kept rephrasing the question to make it easier (meanwhile deducting points) and in the end I think all she said was 'yes'. Ahhh so discouraging! At least I had a few students who really wowed me... I asked one girl 'how do you feel about speaking English?' and she gave a huge speech about how 'we live in a global world which requires us to have far-reaching language skills'. I was like, say what? It was pretty incredible.. needless to say, she got a near-perfect score. The after-school class starts Monday, and I have no lesson plan yet...

The other day one of my co-teachers said her sister is thinking about going to the UT grad school to get her PhD but wanted to research it more. I volunteered to tell her more about it if she became really serious about going there. I started thinking about all the essentials to tell someone who wants to attend UT... where to live, what coffee shops are best, which libraries are better for studying, blackboard, campus buses... etc. It made me really sad! I almost wish I could go back to the beginning of my years at UT, because I can honestly say they have been the best years of my life so far. I know that if I went back right now nothing would be the same, but I wish I could relive a few of those years again. So depressing that there is no more Whitis house, no more late nights at the FAC, no more hilarious times on 4th at the gay bars, I even miss my old hole-in-the-wall of an apartment.

Ok, on to politics: hell yes for Obama's gain in the polls. It's kind of bittersweet because the gain resulted from the stock market's plummeting numbers in recent days (which by the way has pretty much made my Korean salary worthless in the U.S.). Obviously republicans don't know what the hell they're doing. McCain has even been quoted as saying 'I don't know anything about the economy', and then in another interview saying 'I have some expertise on the economy'... psssshhh yeah ok. Because of McCain's deteriorating support, his campaign has turned downright U-G-L-Y. And the Republicans have followed their senile candidate through it all. In a recent campaign stop McCain and his supporters pummeled Obama, saying he is surrounded by 'shady' characters including Rev. Wright. They also repeatedly emphasized that Obama's middle name is 'Hussein', trying to get all the patriots to think he's some kind of terrorist. The crowd responded with cheers, middle fingers, down-turned thumbs, and yells of 'socialist'. I think that maybe the republicans should leave Rev. Wright out of this one, considering Palin used to belong to a pentacostal church and her husband refused to respond to a subpoena investigating him. One guy at the McCain rally said, '"When you have Obama, Pelosi, and the rest of the hooligans up there going to run the country, we have to have our head examined". REALLY? Your boy Bush is doing an eexxxeellleeent job, right? I don't think I want to come back to the U.S. if it is full of guys like this. Maybe I'm a 'socialism' supporter, but how can our nation ever progress if we are going to discriminate against people with the middle name 'Hussein', call him an 'elitist' (oh yeah, and McCain & his 7 houses aren't?), tell gay people they can't have rights, tell women they can't control their own bodies... even if they are raped or victims of incest, and accept Palin's pathetic foreign policy excuse that Alaska is close to Russia?? It really is baffling that people are still so narrow-minded and ignorant, haven't we progressed enough to open our nation's opportunities to everyone, including a guy named Barack Hussein Obama... a guy who grew up under a single & poor mother & somehow made it to Harvard & then the senate and now perhaps the White House? Doesn't that sound like the ultimate American dream? SO FRUSTRATING. I don't want to come back to the U.S. unless Obama is elected.

p.s.-- people should really take the word 'terrorist' out of their vocabulary... it is used way too freely & inappropriately.

The changing color in leaves is a sure signal that fall has arrived. But in this season, who cares about fall foliage when you've got football?

As an official partner of NCAA college football, Sheraton and Four Points are helping you score 20% off weekend rates this fall football season. This weekend promotion is good at just about every Sheraton and Four Points in the country, so no school teams will be left out. The main rules are as follows: arrive on a Thursday through Saturday and stay two consecutive nights to get a 20% discount on your bill.

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="426" caption=" "][/caption]

To step up the competition between schools, there's also an interactive Ultimate Paper Football Game where you can represent your college. Not quite fantasy football, but a nostalgic throwback to the good old days in the middle school cafeteria. The Nittany Lions currently have a size-able lead over the rest of the pack. Unfortunately my alma mater, Virginia, isn't a top seed. What else is new though?

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="350" caption=" "][/caption]

Here are the official rules of the promotion.

Speaking of football and Sheratons, I had the absolute pleasure of staying at the Sheraton Austin over a game weekend last month. During this stay, I was quite impressed with how supportive the hotel and staff were of the University of Texas Longhorns. Upon entry through the main hotel doors, a giant banner welcomed fans staying the weekend and cheered a "GO HORNS" hoot and holler. I don't have any special allegiance to UT, but even I got this sense of belonging . . . which, is what Sheraton wants you to feel after all.

As you can see in the picture of the lobby bar below, the hotel associates behind the bar were dressed in U Texas t-shirts, proudly brandishing the signature burnt orange school color and the unforgettable longhorns head. Associates throughout the hotel, including the ever-helpful and ever-cheerful Theresa, were all decked out in these school spirited T's. You can also see on the far left in the photo below that the hotel had set up a table stocked with complimentary Texas ice lemonade and buttered popcorn.

The Longhorns stampeded over Arkansas 52-10 that weekend.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="650" caption=" "][/caption]

Yes MSG knows that his audience prefers he stays away from something he knows nothing about —

Yes MSG knows that his audience prefers he stays away from something he knows nothing about -- Politics -- and stick to something he knows ALMOST nothing about -- College Football. However, this election is just too good to pass up.

But trust me, it is hard to focus on Politics when you have the Red River Shootout and FLA-LSU coming up this weekend. In fact, my Big 12 Correspondent -- GeneB -- says the QB who wins the Big 12 wins the Heisman. I contend they give it to Chase Daniels of Missouri if he even makes the Big 12 Title game. But I digress.

Now I have had a lot of correspondence with my readers and friends, and they all contend that VP Candidate Palin is not that dissimilar than Senator Obama. They both lack the experience to be President. Ironically, Ex-President Clinton actually (accidentally) told the truth when he said that no one is really ready to be President. Of course, how can anyone actually be prepared / exposed / and an expert in such a wide range of topics, such as Economics, Health Care, International Relations, War.....

Recognizing that this is the case, one can only fall back on a couple of items -- that the candidate has demonstrated the intellectual horsepower to understand complex issues and think strategically. Also, one can hope that the candidate would surround themselves with good advisors, not yes men.

I think that Obama at least shows more promise here. Palin has not shown any previous interest in complex issues or the things that would make someone want to be President. She cannot name a newspaper she reads, she had no opinion on Supreme Court Cases even though the Exxon Valdez decision directly affected her state and she supposedly signed a brief, and believes that geographic proximity equates to foreign policy experience.

I have a colleague who used to work in the Foreign Service. he said one basic question was for the interviewee to take five continents, choose a country, and name a leader. Presumably, the USA and Antarctica were exempt, and they figured that Australia was too obvious. Needless to say, Palin probably could not name 5 of the 7 continents.

I know many of my readers, and ALL OF YOU, ALL OF YOU, are more qualified to be VP -- that is my point!

OK, Obama lacks experience too, but at least he has shown intellectual curiosity and has pulled himself out of a rough situation (single mom) and made something of himself -- Harvard Law.

Now I could go through the debate, but SNL does it better so click here if you missed it. (Although I cannot resist pointing out the joke that Palin believes that marriage is a union between two unwilling teenagers. :)

But to prove my point, please read the following quotes, courtesy of Fareed Zakaria:

When asked how living in the state closest to Russia gave her foreign-policy experience, Palin responded thus:

"It's very important when you consider even national-security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America. Where—where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to—to our state."

There is, of course, the sheer absurdity of the premise. Two weeks ago I flew to Tokyo, crossing over the North Pole. Does that make me an expert on Santa Claus? (Thanks, Jon Stewart.) But even beyond that, read the rest of her response. "It is from Alaska that we send out those …" What does this mean? This is not an isolated example. Palin has been given a set of talking points by campaign advisers, simple ideological mantras that she repeats and repeats as long as she can. ("We mustn't blink.") But if forced off those rehearsed lines, what she has to say is often, quite frankly, gibberish.

placeAd2(commercialNode,'bigbox',false,'')
function ebStdBanner1_DoFSCommand(command,args){try{command = command.replace(/FSCommand:/ig,"");if((command.toLowerCase()=="ebinteraction") || (command.toLowerCase()=="ebclickthrough"))gEbStdBanners[1].handleInteraction();}catch(e){}}

Couric asked her a smart question about the proposed $700 billion bailout of the American financial sector. It was designed to see if Palin understood that the problem in this crisis is that credit and liquidity in the financial system has dried up, and that that's why, in the estimation of Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and Fed chairman Ben Bernanke, the government needs to step in to buy up Wall Street's most toxic liabilities. Here's the entire exchange:

COURIC: Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries; allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?

PALIN: That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the—it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health-care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.

Can we now admit the obvious? Sarah Palin is utterly unqualified to be vice president. She is a feisty, charismatic politician who has done some good things in Alaska. But she has never spent a day thinking about any important national or international issue, and this is a hell of a time to start. The next administration is going to face a set of challenges unlike any in recent memory. There is an ongoing military operation in Iraq that still costs $10 billion a month, a war against the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan that is not going well and is not easily fixed. Iran, Russia and Venezuela present tough strategic challenges.

Domestically, the bailout and reform of the financial industry will take years and hundreds of billions of dollars. Health-care costs, unless curtailed, will bankrupt the federal government. Social Security, immigration, collapsing infrastructure and education are all going to get much worse if they are not handled soon.

placeAd2(commercialNode,'bigbox',false,'')
Between the Bush tax cuts, homeland-security needs, Iraq, Afghanistan and the bailout, the budget is looking bleak. Plus, within a few years, the retirement of the baby boomers begins with its massive and rising costs (in the trillions).

Obviously these are very serious challenges and constraints. In these times, for John McCain to have chosen this person to be his running mate is fundamentally irresponsible. McCain says that he always puts country first. In this important case, it is simply not true.

Haven't we had enough of Presidents and VPs that cannot put together a sentence. Is Obama an elitist since he speaks English like it is his native tongue? And speaking of Elitism -- since when is this a bad thing? Do you prefer that your pilot is "Elite"? Perhaps he even liked planes as a young boy, joined the Navy, and then trained on a variety of planes before getting behind the controls of a 767. I have a reader who is an orthodontist. I presume that he is an Elite practitioner of dentistry and did not just buy a tube of Crest and thing, hey, I want to fix people's mouths.

The final point is the one that Sarah Palin is not running for President. Well, actually, in a way she is, since the Presidential Candidate is 72 and has a history of cancer for which, by the way, he will not release his medical records. He may be OK, but if so, why the secrecy.

And on that note, did any of you catch the question when Palin was asked that if McCain died, how her presidency would be different. She basically displayed no sadness, and said she would go her own way. Ouch! Guy makes her and she stabs him in the back.

I am not saying this means anything, but if elected, McCain would be better served NOT dining at the Observatory. Know what I mean.

OK, Obama will raise your taxes; he is an elitist, he wants to spend too much. Get a grip. We need someone who at least gives us hope that things can be different, although it will be hard for either side with the moronic leadership of both parties in the House and Senate.

More to come, but will hopefully catch OU-UT and be able to comment on that next week.

The next month will no doubt make or break head coach Phillip Fulmer's job security at the University of Tennessee. Four straight SEC tests, splitting the four in half, two home two away. Now some say calling for Fulmer's job is not right given his history at the University of Tennessee. History aside, Fulmer will show fans and players what he is really made of the next month. The Volunteers have a seemly impossible schedule in front on them.

First, the Bulldogs between the hedges. Despite your recent Kingsford commercials Georgia hasn't proved they are the better football team in the last couple of years. This has been Fulmer's fall back game. It seems over the last few years he has crawled his way out of the grave with wins over the Dawgs. The Volunteers have taken care of business in this rivalry even in Athens, where in their last visit the struggling Volunteers dropped half a hundred on the dawgs. But, the Dawgs are coming off a by week and frustrating loss to the Crimson Tide. They need to get back on track, and lets just say the Vols are the track Georgia is the train. Chu-Chu!

Next, the Vols have their homecoming with Mississippi State. This will be no easy test like your average homecoming game. It is quite evident that the Vols have no easy games on their schedule after the romping of Northern Illinois. The State bulldogs played Auburn to a 3-2 loss which obviously attests to their defense, and lets face it the Volunteer offense isn't carving up D's this season. To earn a win for the Alumni things will have to change in a hurry.

Then, the third Saturday in October. Does anything really need to be said about Saban and the Crimson Tide? I will be honest, that is the kind of coach I want at my school. The man doesn't celebrate for a minute, the Volunteers have been celebrating for ten years. Or at least the lone national championship has saved Phil for that long. Its time that we forget about the history and think about the future. Saban is the future, and he is going to make history of Phil and the Vols in Knoxville, losses are not an option for Nick Saban and his football team. When are we going to stop looking in the rear view?

The last leg, off to South Carolina to the Gamecocks home turf. Its no secret the Old Ball Coach is a nemesis of Phillip Fulmer. South Carolina is fresh off a victory against the Rebels of Ole' Miss who knocked off the same Gators who dominated the Big Orange in Knoxville. The Gamecocks are finally healthy and improving. Plus by this time we are going to have one tired football team.

If I was a betting man their is no way I would put money on Tennessee in any of these games, not even against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, on homecoming, in Neyland Stadium. Without a big turn around of the offense and special teams their is no way the Volunteers get victories in these tough SEC games.

My question Volunteers fans, when do you start routing for losses? I know I know. You say never but, lets be honest here one or two upset wins will feel good now but, how will you feel next year with another lack luster season. The fact is all it will take is one big upset win and one mediocre upset and Phil will again have job security, that is something I can not be happy with. All I hear is buy out this buy out that, please the Tennessee Athletic Department has some deep pockets and 6 million is pocket change. And tell me that upset Alumni won't help fit that bill. You better believe their are some Vol Alum that can't stand what they have seen the past five saturdays. Heck I will give some money to get Phil out of there, and you can quote me on that. The Volunteers are now the doormat of the SEC and its down right unacceptable.

The University of Tennessee like it or not is built around or central figure, and that is Neyland Stadium. The winning tradition and fall saturday afternoon is losing its luster in a hurry. Rival games are turning into embarrassments, cheers to boos, tickets to empty seats, touchdowns to interceptions, wins to losses, and football to basketball. I seem to encourter some random person every week who wants to talk Tennessee football with me, this week, a doctor during a visit. You know what that man said, "basketball season can't come soon enough." I never thought I would hear that statement from a Big Orange fan.

VolBall. Till next time, Go Big Orange!

Concerts will be held throughout the duration of the Texas State Fair on the Chevrolet Main Stage, so if you're a country fan you'll be happy to know admission to these concerts is free with your State Fair ticket purchase. This weekend after the OU game, Amarillo native and Texas Country wild man Kevin Fowler will be performing at 8:30.

General Admission tickets are $14 so think of it as a cheap concert ticket, because you'll still have to buy tickets for food and rides once in the fair. But events such as the auto show, pig races, Total Digital Home, a techno-light show you probably shouldn't bring grandma to, the BMX bike show and the L'oreal exhibit. Oh, and my personal favorite--butter sculptures. This year we will finally see the "long-anticipated" 800-pound King Tut masterpiece.

And if you're too poor or unlucky to get an OU ticket, you can watch the game on TV screens throughout the park or just listen to the yells and cries from the nearly dilapidated Cotton Bowl.

Los de la ‘Metro’ pudieron reponerse de un incierto inicio donde llegaron a estar abajo en el marcador 17- 0 para ponerse a tres puntos, pero ninguna de varias oportunidades que tuvieron para empatar las concretaron.

My job interiew was this past Thursday with a company called EMBL. They are a molecular biology labratory, and they were looking for an event assistant for their conferences. I was hoping this would be good event management experience on the more corporate/trade level side, but unfortunately, the position was more of an internship. It would have been 10 hours/week of work and I would have been paid 10 Euros/hour. I need to find something that pays better and is more suitable for my qualifications, so I asked that EMBL considers me in the future if any of the full time event positions open up. (The woman who interviewed me was very nice, and I think I would be very happy working there in a full time position.)

Today marks the 4th week that John and I have done the same thing on Sunday, and we like how it's become a bit of a tradition for us. Each Sunday, we have a late breakfast/lunch at a coffee place in Schwetzingen. We order the same thing every time: 2 cups of coffee and their meat and cheese plate, which comes with 3 different kinds of bread, butter, jam and nutella. I love it and look forward to it each week.

This morning we also got the chance (for the first time this fall) to see a UT game! The UT vs. Colorado game aired this morning at 9 AM, so that was exciting to see. Hook 'em! We're hoping that next week's UT vs. OU game airs as well.

What time is it?

Oh, it's 3:21 PM and OU STILL SUCKS!

TONS of stuff going on this Saturday. So much that I can't even remember what to blog about.

Well, to be honest, there are the only a few things I might be doing anyway (and don't be fooled, I won't be doing ALL of these):

Saturday morning: Try Crossfit Women's Workout

Crossfit is all the rage these days, and no one can really explain to me what it is. I think it's glorified personal training, but whatev--I'll try it! I mean, I ran 11.5 miles at 7:30 am last Saturday, surely I can get up for a 9 am class, right?

The class is limited to 30 women, so RSVP to Nicole Holstrom at nicoleholstrom@crossfitcentral.com

Saturday noon: Play flag football!

This is just me, you guys can't do it unless you sign up with Austin SSC to play. But send Hey! That's Not My Flag! good thoughts.

Saturday afternoon: Stop by a beer festival?

Independence Brewery Anniversary Party

Free beer! Party! 5-9pm

Flying Saucer Fall Beer Festival

Hit the Triangle up from noon-10pm for massive amounts of beer--five tents, a 10-punch "tasting" card for $15 (um, is that $1.50 a beer? Sweeeet! but if it's $1.50 a shot glass of beer ... not so sweet)

North by Northwest Oktoberfest

Far as I can tell, it goes all weekend: all day, both days. Just like the real Oktoberfest, only not as many days of drunken debauchery. Oh, and it's kid-friendly?

Saturday evening: Watch the UT game

Austin Sports & Social Club is having a viewing party at Soho with free food and cheap Bud Light (always Bud Light, ugh ... they're sponsored by them).

Saturday night: uh ...

I don't want to talk about it. I'll probably be at Lanai. Maybe against my wishes, except that I love Lanai.

Choosing a photographer can seem a little overwhelming, because there are so many photographers with varying levels of experience, price ranges and philosophies. I have been a professional photographer for over 28 years and have had the privilege of serving many clients. In that time I have heard the good and bad from customers about their experiences in portrait photography. I hope you will find the following information helpful in choosing a photographer that will be right for you.

Why Choose a Professional Photographer?

Think about all the time, effort and planning that goes into gathering everyone together for a family portrait, wedding, etc... These photographs can be a treasure of intensely memorable feelings and a joy to revisit throughout your life – but only if your photographer has the talent and skill to mentally focus, shoot and capture those defining moments. You do not want to risk diminishing your memories by hiring anyone other than an experienced photographer that you can trust. There is a common misconception that anyone with a good camera can take good pictures. The reality is, not everyone knows how to use their equipment properly. Yes, the camera equipment is important, but even more important is the talent behind the camera. Serious photographers also invest in current technology and software in order to be well prepared.

Here are a few tips:

[caption id="attachment_12" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Some Commercial work"][/caption]

1. Meet with the photographer - They should take the time to listen to what you want, and ask questions so they can get to know you. A photographer needs this information to create images that tell the story of who you are. You want a photographer who is flexible enough to meet your needs. For example, many families make their portraits more memorable by choosing a favorite location. Remember, you will be working very closely with this person. You should feel comfortable and totally at ease with them and they should be professional in their demeanor. This is especially critical of your wedding photographer because they will be following you around for each event. You do not want to be flanked by someone you find irritating, annoying, or offensive.

[caption id="attachment_13" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Senior close up"][/caption]

2. View samples of their work - This will give you an idea of both the style and quality each photographer provides. Look for a style of imagery that “speaks” to you. A good photographer should have the ability to capture mood, emotion, and sentiment within their photographs. The images should stir you in some way. Many people are choosing photographers who specialize in a journalistic approach of photography for their wedding portraiture, (this is a more candid and natural style). There is, however, a place for those traditional staged shots of family groups... but those in the group should look like they are having fun, even Aunt Ethel!

[caption id="attachment_15" align="alignleft" width="214" caption="Engagement"][/caption]

3. Artwork and Additional Services - Just as important as the captured image, is the artwork performed afterwards. This is where the current technology of the camera, computer and software gives the photographer his edge. It is amazing the difference even a small amount of experienced artwork can make to a finished portrait. For example: swapping heads, adding family members, slimming, removing braces, and so much more. Click on “Artwork” at the left for a presentation of “before” and “after” images. Also, ask the photographer about their other products and services such as custom announcements, unique wedding albums and sign-in books, special framing, photo restoration, personalized collages, hard-bound portrait books, or even salon services.

Ask about experience: A strong background in art, as well as photography is very beneficial. This strongly influences the quality of your portrait. Second: Ask how long they’ve been working in the field. This lets you know that they will conduct themselves professionally on the job, especially with the intensity of a wedding. If you are on a tight budget, hiring a less experienced photographer could save you a little money. However, the old adage, “You get what you pay for” is most often the case, and the best advice is that this is one area where you should not intentionally skimp.

[caption id="attachment_10" align="alignright" width="252" caption="Studio snow fun!"][/caption]

5. Check references – A friend’s recommendation is helpful in finding a good photographer. However, you should still ask for references or testimonials of their work. You want to choose a photographer who is consistent in their quality.

6. Communicate – The photographer should have a clear understanding of your expectations. When you meet with the photographer discuss the services provided and the fees involved. If it is a wedding, ask for a copy of the wedding contract. This is for your protection as well as the photographer’s. Make sure you read and understand the contract, because this helps avoid any future misunderstandings.

Speaking of weddings, there are a couple other things that you should know:

If you’re dealing with a studio that employs a number of different wedding photographers, be sure you are viewing the samples of the actual photographer who will be assigned to your wedding. You’d be surprised by how often studios show prospective clients the work of photographers who will have nothing to do with their wedding!

Also, understand how reorders of photos will be handled. Traditionally, photographers have always kept the negatives, meaning that any additional photos you may want in the future would have to be acquired through the studio. This is the best way to maintain control over the quality of finished portraits and to ensure the best in printing, coloring and artwork. Because the wedding day is so important to you, some photographers will now allow you to purchase the digital candids from that day. It is important to know precisely what your package price includes so you can accurately compare the cost of one photographer to another.

At Scott Hancock Photography, to ensure your portrait success, we request a consultation with you which enables us to discover the possibilities that are available. In this complimentary consultation, we discuss possible settings available in the studio, outdoors, and location sessions. We’ll also talk about what clothing would be most appropriate. I cannot emphasize enough how important this will be for your portrait’s success!

I love going to the movies. In fact, I love it so much that I sometimes go to the movies by myself (

I love going to the movies. In fact, I love it so much that I sometimes go to the movies by myself (I'd rather spend that extra ticket money on nachos and a soda but shhhh don't tell my girlfriend). When I reach my 40s and 50s, I am going to be that creepy old man with a large popcorn and jumbo soda that sits by himself and laughs so loud that you miss the next line.

Lately however, I have not been enjoying myself at the movies. I think it is because I am bitter from the start. The other day, I spent $19 on tickets for Paige and myself to see "Eagle's Eye." I don't know why I support Shia Labeouf, because he is the most overrated actor in Hollywood. I think my next blog is going to be on why I hate Shia Labeouf and his no-talent-ass-clown acting.

Anyways back to the story. I asked the ticket lady for a student discount and showed her both of the Spartan cards, yet I was informed that "student discounts" are only on Thursday. Very few students here in Tampa go to the movies on a Thursday as it is "college night" at most bars. I'm sorry I would rather spend $5 punishing my liver than $15 for my girlfriend and I to go to the movies.

It was a 6:20 show, so I asked for a matinee price. I was told that matinee movies are only before 6 p.m. Convienent. So I just sucked it up and slid my check card through the window. Because if you use plastic, it's like you never spent it.

The movie in itself was lame, basically a message to stray away from technology. The lame message combined with Shia Labeouf makes it a "see it if watching paint dry gets boring".

I think if the prices were $5.50 student prices like the good old days, I would have ordered my nachos and cheese with extra jalepenos and watch young Labeouf attempt to entertain me. Don't you feel like prices jumped out of nowhere? It went from $5.50 my freshman year to $9.50 now. What happened?

So here is what I recommend. Jason Wagner and I did this quite a bit living in Oldsmar this summer. Go on a Sunday and buy a matinee ticket and then hop from theater to theater watching all the movies you wouldn't see otherwise. One day I remember watching "Kung Foo Panda," "Don't Mess with the Zohan," and "Las Vegas" back-to-back-to-back. It's not stealing... it's "getting back at the man".

I'll stop getting back at the man once he gives me back my student discount, and I will reward him with purchasing overpriced nachos.

Der Sieger nimmt sich alles
Der Verlierer muss fallen
Es ist einfach und es ist schlicht
Warum sollte ich mich beklagen

Doch sag mir küsst sie dich
Wie ich Dich geküsst hab
Tust Du dasselbe fühlen
Wenn Du sagst Ihren Namen

Irgendwo tief in inneren
Musst Du wissen ich vermiss Dich
Aber was kann ich sagen
Regeln muss man folgen

Die Richter werden entscheiden
Die ähnlichen von mir bleiben
Zuschauer einer Show

Kein Selbstbewusstsein
Aber Du siehst

Der Sieger nimmt sich alles
Der Sieger nimmt sich alles
Nur der Sieger
Nimmt sich alles
Und der Verlierer
Der muss fallen
Nicht dran sterben
Gehe in Dir
Jemand hier
Wird Dich lieben
Nehme Dir alles
Muss fallen
