For a long time I have maintained that football is one of the great uniting things in the world. I'm struggling to think of any one other sport which unites so many people. Yes, the Olympics does bring people together, but that's due to the multitude of sports available. Football, though, is played everywhere. From the slums of Brazil to the dusty villages of Africa, football has the ability to unite people, to inspire people, and to encourage people.

Which is why it is nice to be able to watch Soccer Aid tonight. The match, at Wembley, saw an England XI play a Rest of the World XI. Both sides were comprised of former players and 'celebrities'. Now, as fond as I'm not of the cult of celebrity, it was great to watch so many people from so many different backgrounds competing honestly, fairly, and with great enthusiasm all for a good cause.

The players, as expected took the match very seriously, and the final result of 4-3 in England's favour, reflected the attacking and entertaining nature of the match. The players, both former pros and celebrities alike all helped make the match a great spectacle, where the real winner was Unicef.

I strongly believe we should see more things like this from football. In a time where so many people are becoming more and more disillusioned with the frankly disgusting levels of money in the sport, it is great to see that people can gather together for a week, train every day, and then turn out for such a match. More matches such as this would serve to restore a waning faith in football. I just hope that more people can cotton onto the great nature of tonights event, and use it to raise more money for charity.

The Mirror, Vol. 12, No. 576

Note:

We mirror this article, though there are some problems – still it serves our purpose to mirror selected articles showing the original Khmer press. First of all, “James Bond” cannot visit Cambodia, because James Bond is not a person, but a fictional character, created in 1953 by the writer Ian Fleming. Secondly, the role of the Agent 007 was played, over the years in the different James-Bond-Movies, by the following actors: Sean Connery · George Lazenby · Roger Moore · Timothy Dalton · Pierce Brosnan · Daniel Craig.

The name given here phonetically in Khmer is ជេម ស្បន "Jem Sbon" for "James Bon(d?)" – [here written in standard Khmer UNICODE system; if you do not have it, you can download it here].We assume that it is “the 007 Agent James Bond,” and not the also well known actor “James Bone 007” from the Philippines.

It is not clear who might have come.

“A well known English Hollywood film star visited Cambodia for two weeks. His visit focusesd first of all on many touristic sites in Cambodia, especially the seashore regions in Sihanoukville that are beautiful natural tourism sites in Cambodia.

“Mr. James Bond, who is known worldwide and is named 'Agent 007,' visited Cambodia for the first time.

Note:

In his first mission since being formally knighted, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Sir Roger Moore visited Cambodia on 23 and 24 October 2003 to promote the increased production and use of iodized salt to combat iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), a major threat to the health and development of Cambodian children. Therefor the recently visiting “James Bond” canot have been Sir Roger Moore.

“The unofficial visit of nearly twenty days in Cambodia by the world famous film star, Mr. James Bond, was organized together with a marvelous Khmer woman, Ms. Kol Sokhum, for two weeks in Sihanoukville, in order to study development projects for big centers according to international standards.

“Ms. Kol Sokhum, the director of the LLK Company, reported to Khmer Machas Srok yesterday that, regarding the visit to study development projects in Sihanoukville, the world famous film star again and again admired our Khmer natural resources, a very rich wealth. She said, ‘Mr. James Bond said that Cambodia is small, but it is rich in beautiful natural wealth, and he said he wants to report [to his friends and to the world] about Cambodia so that they will try to help Cambodia, since he is very interested in Cambodia. He told me that it was the first time that he knew Cambodia, and it was incredible; he continued urging the Khmer people not consider themselves to be without values; the country is like a diamond which has not yet been polished.’

“Hearing the admiration by this English Hollywood film star, Ms. Kol Sokhum called on Khmer women to be strong and to be brave and to make themselves to be good models for all women preparing their lives well. She went on to say, ‘We women, we have to try to make ourselves good, both in ideas and in intelligence, in order to attract investments from the world to Cambodia. I would like to ask Khmer women to enhance their knowledge in order to appeal to the world - as for me, I will make further efforts. Whatever I tried is for our country and our citizens, although I have to sacrifice everything for all Khmers. I want to be a good model for Khmer women in order to shake the world, both in work and in the field of investments…’

“She continued that Mr. James Bond said he well visit Cambodia again. During his two-weeks visit, Mr. James learned to live like Khmers do, and even he liked to eat Khmer food, such as sour soup.

“Ms. Kol Sokhum said also that the film star James Bond admired that Khmer women are beautiful with petite figures, but somewhat short.

“Mr. James Bond left Cambodia on 4 September 2008 and he promised he will visit Cambodia again soon, to join to make investments together with Ms. Kol Sokhum to surprise Asia. In the meantime, Mr. James Bond said also that he will create good documentation about the reality he had seen in Cambodia to be published in world magazines. Mr. James Bond hinted the natural tourism sites he has seen in Cambodia motivate him to plan to come to produce also films soon.” Khmer Machas Srok, Vol.2, #138, 6.9.2008

I answered my front door this morning to a woman enquiring after a catalogue she had posted through

I answered my front door this morning to a woman enquiring after a catalogue she had posted through the door. In my hand I was holding a set of fine art brushes. She naturally asked "Are you a painter - I used to paint but I don't now?", looking hopelessly down at the toddler at her knee as if it was his fault.

Well No, actually I am not a painter- though recently I have started to paint. Like many of us as I wasn't 'good' enough at school to 'paint' and it wasn't always seen as a masculine thing {apologies - not my stereotype} so had that door firmly shut in my face. Since leaving work I have been re-exploring {or finding for the first time} oocupations, pastimes and pursuits as varied as painting, writing and fell walking. Since I have finished work I have spent a lot of time in manual work - filling skips, clearing houses. Since I have finished work I have used the skills I learnt professionally to support others starting off in business or new projects. A bit of a hotch potch really. BUT! With good cause - you see I don't really know what to do {See yesterdays blog} so I am exploring. Choosing things I fancy whether I have done them before or not. Choosing things that I am not sure I will have an aptitude for but going ahead anyway. This week I said to my close friend, the author and communicator, Lee Jackson, "I will only do things from now I like". My journey right now is to discover what I like and perhaps even what I was meant to do.

My career was the length it was for many reasons - do you recognise any of them?

I feared change - what would people say? what would happen to my family? Aarrgh!

I was reasonably good at what I did compared to a belief I self developed that I wasn't very good at anything else.

I liked {a great deal} a number of the people I worked with and for - would I be able to cope without them?

I was 45 and wondered whether the boat had slipped anchor.

I had no idea what I would do.

I was comfortable. Very dangerous!

For a lot of those years I don't think I was in the wrong job but for the last 5 I was. I hadn't been equipped or encouraged to think that I should be doing something else. To find my calling.

Take a look at Kevin Keegan. He always strikes me as a man of integrity. An honest man who works hard. Loyal to his players. Passionate about what he does. I was particualarly impressed with him recently giving Joey Barton a second {or third} chance when many others were simply writing him off. BUT you do have to wonder whether he is in the right job. Unlike the Wegners, Fergusons, etc who seem able to emotionally partition the pressures of football, Kevin seems to take it so personally. I don't know the rights and wrongs of the current situation but you do have to wonder whether Kevin would make a great Relief Worker, Youth Worker, UNICEF Ambassador. He cares and has passion.

Look further afield....Gordon Brown - only today has he been issued another warning {see link to BBC Article}. Is he really the stuff of premiership? Chancellor of the Exchequer - nailed on, but massively underimpressive as PM. Take a look at the nonsense of the last few days. Or Sarah Palin. {Careful girl you are in real danger!} I so feel for this woman. Yep, She has some fairly unusual belief systems {I don't see Jesus with an armalite rifle myself} but what will those Washington folks do to her.

Its like we can lose control at some point, or hand control over to our fears, or stand behind events. The handcuffs we attach to ourselves truly prevent us taking our own journeys. Truly prevent us from finding who we are and what we could {and even should} be doing.

So Kevin - throw the towel in. Go Home. We will still love you. Go and leave your mark in a new way. Oh, and as for my caller this morning , I told her to come back tomorrow when I would find what she was after. When she does I will give her brushes...and hope.

„A fost descoperita prezenta hormonului HCG in multe dintre vaccinurile antirubeola.

-Greetings from the Philippines. I would like to respond to your questions on antifertility vaccines because we were involved in investigating the tetanus toxoid vaccines in 1995. We suspected that they contained beta HCG because some of the women who submitted themselves to the mass vaccination program of the government complained of miscarriages and other side-effects. This involved five injections within a year to girls and women starting age 14 to 44, reproductive age. A random sampling of the vials donated by WHO and UNICEF did contain traces of beta HCG. We reported this to the Department of Health but they concluded that these were just noise traces and that the nuclear laboratory tests done were not the proper test to have been conducted. Our suspicions were stronger when we found out that experiments on anti-fertility vaccines using tetanus and cholera were being done in India. Phone call interview with Dr. Talwar of India revealed that he indeed was doing the experiments. But subsequent laboratory tests on other vials conducted by neutral groups were rejected by the government and even Vatican advised us not to make such a big issue out of the anti-tetanus immunizations so we just dropped it after the government committed not to conduct massive anti-tetanus vaccinations anymore but would just give it to pregnant women with full consent. for more information, you can visit this other website .

The blatant and sometimes self-serving use of the term “orphan” has become a sore spot w

The blatant and sometimes self-serving use of the term "orphan" has become a sore spot with me. Hopefully, clarifying what it means to be an orphan will help pave the way to making important changes in society's approach to adoption. Keeping families together and within their own communities whenever reasonably possible should be our first priority.

UNICEF and global partners define an orphan as a child who has lost one or both parents. By this definition there were over 132 million orphans in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean in 2005. This large figure represents not only children who have lost both parents, but also those who have lost a father but have a surviving mother or have lost their mother but have a surviving father.

Of the more than 132 million children classified as orphans, only 13 million have lost both parents. Evidence clearly shows that the vast majority of orphans are living with a surviving parent grandparent, or other family member. 95% of all orphans are over the age of 5.

This definition contrasts with concepts of orphan in many industrialized countries, where a child must have lost both parents to qualify as an orphan. UNICEF and numerous international organizations adopted the broader definition of orphan in the mid-1990s as the AIDS pandemic began leading to the death of millions of parents worldwide, leaving an ever increasing number of children growing up without one or more parents. So the terminology of a ‘single orphan’ – the loss of one parent – and a ‘double orphan’ – the loss of both parents – was born to convey this growing crisis.

However, this difference in terminology can have concrete implications for policies and programming for children. For example, UNICEF’s ‘orphan’ statistic might be interpreted to mean that globally there are 132 million children in need of a new family, shelter, or care. This misunderstanding may then lead to responses that focus on providing care for individual children rather than supporting the families and communities that care for orphans and are in need of support.

There is growing consensus on the need to revisit the use of the term ‘orphan’ and how it is applied to help overcome this confusion.

Pomocy potrzebują przede wszystkim kobiety i dzieci.

Wielu mieszkańców uciekło z najbardziej zagrożonych okolic Gori w kierunku stolicy kraju – Tbilisi., Pozostawili cały swój dobytek, nadzieję na przeżycie pokładając w rządzie i organizacjach międzynarodowych.

UNICEF koordynuje prace nad zaopatrzeniem mieszkańców w wodę pitną i sanitariaty. Koncentruje swoje działania na dostarczaniu do miejsc pobytu uchodźców artykułów pierwszej potrzeby: wody, tabletek do jej oczyszczania, baniaków i produktów higienicznych . UNICEF Armenia przekazał łóżka do 4 takich miejsc w Tbilisi.

No quiero. Ojalá me muriera... nadie me quiere escuchar.

No tienes amigos y nadie quiere serlo.

Mala mujer, no tienes piedad.
