OK, first a warning to my mom and any other readers who aren’t internet-obsessed desk-dwellers

OK, first a warning to my mom and any other readers who aren't internet-obsessed desk-dwellers strapped to a computer every day. The following post contains an odd new language of made-up words including "Twitter" which will make absolutely no sense unless you're said desk-dwelling computer slave.

I give this warning only because I'm still being kidded for saying at a recent barbecue that I was sad that I missed it when Barack Obama Twittered me to tell me who his choice for VP was. "He what?" they asked. "He twiddled you?" Obviously, no, but it was easier to laugh with them than to explain.

I never really understood why someone would use Twitter. It's a place to post a short, 150-character update (or "Tweet") of what you're up to. People can then follow you and your Tweets will show up on their Twitter home page. Are you following?

To me Twitter was useless. I have a website to fill people in on what I'm doing. I try to update my Facebook page daily, that's where my short updates are going. Why would I Twitter? It's redundant. But then I found more friends who were Twittering, and fake internet friends (who aren't real friends but who feel like it since I read their blogs everyday) who were Twittering, too. I started following them all and that gave me a reason to check Twitter more than just once a month.

And then I found my new favorite thing: TwitterFox. Now forgive me because I never had any friends with computers when IMing was the thing to do. I've never IM'd. I don't even know what I just typed. But from what I can tell, TwiterFox makes Twitter like IM. (Head spinning yet?)

As people you follow on Twitter post new Tweets, a little window pops up on your screen to let you know what they've written. You can also post a Tweet from there without going to the Twitter website. This has been incredibly entertaining as I work on lame budgets and spreadsheets and things at work and a new Tweet from Amalah or Amanda pops up. I love it. It makes me laugh, it makes me feel connected. And that's why TwitterFox is my new favorite thing.

OK, internetspeak over. I'll go back to speaking English now, I swear.

I've recently started using a Twitter add-on for FireFox, TwitterFox. The add-on puts a little "t" in the corner of FireFox, and when clicked, pops up a menu containing the latest Tweets from your friends. TwitterFox can also be configured to play a sound when receiving a new tweet (I personally use a Zelda sound). It's one of the best add-ons out there, with only one issue. It supports almost no themes. When I say this, I mean that many popular themes, including AeroFox, simply won't open when the add-on is installed. You have to boot Mozilla FireFox into Safe Mode in order to disable TwitterFox. It won't even work well with the default theme: it runs FireFox correctly, but completely mangles my toolbars. I contacted the developer about the issue, and he says he's working on it, but it seems to me it should be a top priority issue. Keep in mind that the add-on does work with FireFox 2 perfectly, so if you're still using it, you're good to go. Otherwise, you'll just have to bear it until the bug gets fixed. FireFox 3 Portable (default theme) doesn't mangle my toolbars while running TwitterFox, so I've been using that quite a bit lately. It boots up rather slowly though, so I don't use it when pressed for time. For the curious, here's the web site for the add-on. Anyway, that's just my rant for the day. Comment back on which themes you find do work with TwitterFox!

Blogging is starting to be too much of a task. I mean you have to come up with a lot of material just to come up with one post. There are simple ways to blog but none easier then Twitter. If i have something to say i just got to my Twitterfox and type away. If there is a link i would like to show or anything else im doing i Twitthat.

Im not much of a blogger more like the seeker of knowledge and twitter helps me keep track of all the things i tweet about. Till i get my Ipod Touch or anything else that will allow me to be mobile i might think about really blogging but for now im confined to stay in front of my computer till then.

I was amongst the 8 million people who set the World Record for most download in 24 hours when I downloaded Firefox 3. However, most of the add-ons that I had recommended in my previous blog 21 Firefox Add-ons to enhance your browsing experience needed to be upgraded or became completely obsolete to Firefox 3. Hence this blog where I will advice 10 new and/or improved add-ons.

10 New and/or Improved Firefox 3 Add-ons to enhance your browsing experience

StumbleUpon - Let's keep it real, it is still as addictive as before and make you reach the enf of the internet - twice - through sleepless nights. A good add-on that will allow you to literally browse the web - your way

PicLens - Now that has got to be the coolest add-on ever made. You know whenever you're on Google Images, and you have to go through 7 different pages that take hours to load before you can actually find the one that you're interested in? How about when you're watching your friends' pictures on Facebook, MySpace or Flicker? Well fear no more: PicLens is an add-on that transforms your browser into a full-screen, 3D experience for online photos and videos. That's right, VIDEOS too! This add-on searches through Amazon, Google, YouTube, Flicker, deviantArt, Photobucket, Facebook, Myspace and more! Highly Recommended.

Fast Dial - Another awesome and very useful add-on. I barely use my bookmarks anymore: Fast Dial replaces the 'about:blank' page whenever you open a new tab with a panel of thumbnails of your favorite sites. A real time-saver inspired by Opera's Speed Dial. Again: Highly Recommended.

TwitterFox - For all the Twitters out there, stop downloading Twitterific or whatever it's called for PCs. Get TwitterFox. You can follow your friends or write down a Twitt directly from Firefox. It's just extremely convenient, and you don't even have to launch another application.

ScribeFire - This is mainly for the bloggers. I'm actually typing this blog through ScribeFire; it's a full-featured blog editor that integrates with Firefox and lets you easily post your blog. I can browse the web while I'm doing blogging to make sure all my web references and links are correct. Sweet add-on.

Previews - The makers of PicLens did it again. "Best extension ever? Quite possibly." - LifeHacker. "Cooliris makes you a more efficient web surfer." - CNet. I somewhat agree: it is very useful when you're on Craigslist, MySpace or Facebook when you want to see a listing but don't want to go from one page back to the index page and onto the next page and so on... it pops a new window within your already-opened tab so you can see different pages within one. I had to set it up to my convenience, but it's definitely worth it if you don't want to waste your time going back and forth one page.

Google Notebook - The page you're on is somewhat interesting but not enough to read it right now, and definitely not interesting to bookmark? Put it in your notebook. Useful little add-on.And now for the web developers; I use those practically everyday at work:

FireFTP - Just as useful as it before, you don't need another application for a cross-platform FTP, it works better then before (looks like they did some tweaking) and it provides easy and intuituve access to different FTP servers.

FireBug - This little add-on allows you to edit, debug and monitor CSS, HTML and JavaScript live in any web page. Very helpful and useful when you need to tweak your CSS.

Web Developer - This add-on and FireBug make a great team. Web Developer adds a menu and a toolbar with various web developer tools.

I haven't used all the add-ons that I used to have, for I've noticed that the more add-ons you use, the more memory they use, and they drastically slow down firefox and sometimes make it crash (ok, I had a PC, but that's another story). So now I'm only using the ones that are necessary, useful, will make me save time and really improve my browsing experience.

Again, should you have any comments, suggestions, disagreements, whatever... feel free to leave a comment! Thanks for reading.

Seems to be a lot of speculation about Twitter these days. The growing pains it has recently experienced has been frustrating to say the least. Several blog posts have pointed to an exodus to Friendfeed (LISs StevenK', LibLime's Nicole Engard) due to frustrations felt at the recent ALA conference.

Many are jumping ships to other sites such as Plurk, Kwippy, Identi.ca, Pownce, etc. Friendfeed is also gaining some of the ex-Tweeters. I am signed up on all of them as mlibrarianus.

My main problem with leaving Twitter is my "friends" or followers. Some are on Plurk or one or two on Kwippy or several on Friendfeed but none of them are all in one place like Twitter. Sure I can send invites from these other sites to get my followers to jump ship but which one? I've yet to find one that I like better than Twitter at the moment. Plus what I like about Twitter is all the different apps that have spawn out of it. Spaz, Twirl, Twitterfox, Twitwheel, TweetLater and my all time favorite Twitterfeed. I know Friendfeed has several applications as well but I'm not hooked on Friendfeed like I am Twitter.

Friendfeed certainly does have some attractive features (being able to link to all your social networks and have display in one place). I guess it's the age old problem - lead, follow or get out of the way.

Lead - if you lead and have plenty of followers fine, your friends are there along side you. However, if you lead to a place they don't like you are left out in cyber space alone.

Follow - not always the best path to take but you are never alone.

Get out of the way - maybe the best approach to just sit back and let everyone fight it out?

Thinking that I'll just let the dust settle a bit and then see what's the next big thing. Until then I'll Tweet away while Plurking my Kwips all on Friendfeed.

So I've been testing out Firefox 3 ever since it came out a couple of days ago and have started playing around with some of the add-ons available for it. Firefox as most people know is highly customizable, which is one of the reasons it's so popular. But after wadeing through many of the add-ons you start to realize their are a lot of crappy and useless extensions. It took me a while to find the right combination of add-ons to be truly happy and able to get the most out of Firefox 3, so here is my list of the best add-ons available.

- Twitterfox. This twitter client sits in the bottom right corner of the browser window and alerts you when you have a new tweet. When closed it appears only as a small "t" but click on it and it brings up a small interface that allows you to see recent tweets, replies and direct messages. Unlike many apps that run off the Twitter API this one is fast, it updates frequently and I haven't had any problems with it. I think it might even run smoother than Flocks integrated Twitter sidebar.

- Del.icio.us. bookmark plugin allows you to interact with you online bookmarks more efficently by simply clicking the "Tag" icon when viewing a page you wish to bookmark. A pop up window allows you to enter all the info you would normally record and tag the URL accordingly. It's very useful if you use Del.icio.us. often.

- Stylish doesn't do much, but it allows you to add favicons to the bookmark bar instead of just the text as Firefox for OS X would normally display. There really isn't much to say about Stylish other than it adds a visual aspect to your bookmarks that otherwise wouldn't be present under the default settings.

- Finally the flashiest and most superfluous add-on for Firefox is PicLens. PicLens adds a coverflowesk interface to sites like Flickr, Youtube, Facebook, Google Images, and others. You can scroll through media like you would in the cover flow view in iTunes, but it also allows you to scroll in to photos, or zoom out to show many photos at once. It's great if you want a quick way of looking at someones photostream on Flickr, or if your looking to view some random YouTube videos.

All of these add-on can be found by going to Tools -> Add-ons in the Firefox menubar.

In response to my good buddy Jonathan's question I thought I'd post this so that maybe those other users could join in as well.

My progress has been from Twitbin -> Flock -> TwitterFox -> Twhirl. You asked for the short version so here you go:

I like Twhirl because:

It has all the functions of TwitterFox that I liked and then some

It has it's own window outside of the toolbar

It's customizable with skins and such

It shows @s and DMs and normal tweets in different colors

It shows my Tweet's profile pic and hovering over it gives me instant access to @ or DM

Send pics from w/in twhirl

Search, filter, mark as seen, trash, favorite with the click of a button

Auto updates and notifies you with pop-ups

Anyone else? What are your thoughts on Twitter apps? What do you use?

I wanted to let people know that this is so much better using your twitter from firefox and you don't have to leave your current page.

A neat little feature is that you can link the current page you are reading and creates a tiny url for you to post on twitter. Isn't life grand

Or, how I learned that the newest isn't always the best.

Firefox got an upgrade last night, to beta 5 (the final beta before release later this month) - and my two favourite extensions - in fact, the only two I ever really use - are incompatible. Yes, AdBlock and Twitterfox are no longer my friends. This is bad for a few reasons:

ads are evil, obtrusive and just plain annoying

the web looks so nice without them (oh, I remember the singing ads on facebook...)

I am getting addicted to twitter.

I look forward to seeing these fixed sharpish!

I've had my Eee PC for nearly three weeks. In that time I've used it to write many emails on GMail (tried Evolution Mail but it's just too expansive to fit on the tiny screen), written some online course answers using AbiWord, scanned my wife's transcript using the XSane Image Scanner, socialized via Twitterfox and gtwitter -- in short, it's become a useful tool rather than a novelty gadget. All this is apart from its daily use as my personal media player (PMP).

My replacement 8GB SDHC card finally arrived courtesy of Newegg, so now I'm rocking an extra 12 gigs of storage (SDHC card + 4GB flash drive) over and above the 4GB internal SSD. I had initially thought that I would use the SDHC card as a test bed to dual-boot the Eee PC, but I'm finding that I'm really happy with EeeXubuntu, and I don't feel the need to switch to any other OS at the moment. EeeXubuntu is fast, stable, usable, and with access to the entire Ubuntu repositories, highly expandable (something the default Xandros OS is not).

These folks are trying to get Mac OS X Tiger running on the Eee PC. So far the main problem seems to be that the OS 10.4.9 kernel thinks that one second is 2.6 seconds long on the Eee PC. Several people on the site are offering cash rewards for solutions to getting OS X running smoothly on the Eee PC. Personally, even though I love the Mac OS, I don't think it's a good fit for the Eee PC; I think it would need to be heavily modified before it could be useful on the tiny wonder. I'll be watching their progress, though.
