Ok, so this is going to be something a bit different. First post not about diabetes.

For those who aren't familiar, Twitter is a 'microblogging' site that is growing rapidly in popularity, despite its instabilities, and the 'at first' impenetrable look of the thing.

Twitter is probably best described as a thought-capture cum presence engine. It something that's highly regarded among prolific bloggers and new-media types, particularly people like Kevin Rose, Leo Laporte and Merlin Mann. It's also increasingly being used by normal people, and the sheer amount of information going through it is incredible.

That's where Twistori comes in. Twistori is part of a whole ecosystem that has grown up around Twitter, apps that scrape the information from Twitter to use in new or interesting ways.

Twistori is probably the best example of this kind of app. It takes something which is used by lots of people as a cross between txt messaging, status updates and IM, and turns it into a community-driven art project - without the community needing to know that they're contributing toward it.

It's a pretty simple concept - when you first open the page you have six verbs listed to the side; Love, Hate, Think, Believe, Feel and Wish. Click the word and you get tweets delivered in real-time that contain that word. It turns what can sometimes feel like an echo-chamber into a community - without any of the contributors having to connect to a community. It pulls togethers common feelings and thoughts into a single place and it's kinda beautiful really.

Since I've been using twitter I've been up to date with Kuwait news thanks to nibaq! The desert storms (a.k.a desertfubuki) , death of H.H Sheikh Saad (Allah yer7ma) , and many more stuff about Kuwait.

What is missing is more people to join twitter but no body seems intrested in micro blogging. Frankly speaking, it isn't a good time to urge people to join in with all the downtime twitter and pownce are facing recently.

You guys put the twit in Twitter, no doubt. Do you even use it?

It's yet another techie time suck, magnifying the dislocation from the real, meatspace , normal, happy, stable world which we would be busy building if it weren't for these fucking things. But maybe you might want to see what it's all about, become addicted and then ditch it like the bags of PCP you used to snort every other day.

You know, I'm just blowing smoke up your ass because I just joined and have not the faintest idea how it will enhance our attempts at finding life on Mars (that's NASA's Mars Phoenix twitter at that link by the way) ; or how it will enhance my or your life on Earth.

So, yeah it seems kind of fun. Remember the Iowa Caucus twitter blatz-down on the Arkansas Grand Old Party dude? Twitter also came in handy during the LA fires last year and now during the earthquake in China so it's not completely reprehensible like you and George Clinton.

Coincidentally, this is a long-ass, boring post and the idea is to keep it short and sweet on Twitter. If you want to follow me or whatever, I'm here; lots of idiotic stuff like this and this.

Empresa

Camiseteria

Tecnologia aplicada

Opinião do blogueiro

A micro-blogging platform. I have been experimenting with it for about 3-weeks now and am starting to form some opinions. At first, I really could not see the business application. Turns out I was looking at it too narrowly. I was thinking, "why would I care if someone was eating cheese cake for dessert"? Frankly, I still don't care. But it goes deeper than that. It affords the user a unique information flow that becomes personalized in the process.

If you are following like-minded people (in my case primarily marketing or technology folks), you get somewhat personalized access into the knowledge and experience base they hold. Not all tweets have to be laced with wisdom, but each day as I have begun following some thought leaders, I have gained insights into their learning circle by reading online articles that they recommend as they encounter the information first-hand themselves. Most people do not pass on links of stuff that is junk. So, I have found that I am introduced to new material in addition to the blogs I have been reading on my own. This is a refreshing learning process and quite cutting edge.

So here's what I like:

Interesting insights on cutting edge topics on-the-fly

A glimpse into the person behind the blog or the online persona

Meeting some interesting folks from around the globe - all sharing their wisdom

Asking a question or seeking feedback from your followers and getting remarkable responses in short-order

Participating in brief and focused online conversations and feedback exchanges

Here's what I don't like:

People who want to follow you to promote their agenda

Those who tweet too much (tweets every 5 minutes)

I still don't really care for what people are eating for supper

The simple solution to the things I don't like is to stop following or block those who are irrelevant to my learning experience.

Here is an interesting site to check out for a couple minutes (but it may show you that not everyone is using Twitter the way I am...and that's OK!): Twitter Vision

Please feel free to enhance my introduction to Twitter by sharing your thoughts and usage experiences and insights. I know I am still scratching the surface with this tech-application and I value your feedback fellow twitterers!

Last week I came across a post from Dave Lee about journalism and shorthand. He describes how learning shorthand is under debate in UK j-schools, where the skill appears to have a strong following. In fact one of the comments berates any journalist who doesn't know a form of shorthand:

Anyone who thinks it is possible to accurately cover a court case without shorthand is a moron.

Unless and until tape recorders or the like are allowed inside a court that will not change.

If you can't do shorthand you're not a journalist - end of story (no pun intended).

The above quote is attributed to a "Gary." While I can see the reasoning behind this mentality I actually agree with Martin Stabe who replied to Gary's quote, basically making the point that shorthand is only a staple of a j-school education in the UK.

As a journalism student in the U.S. I stumbled upon stories about shorthand speed records and was immediately determined to learn shorthand, all by myself no less.

Here's the kicker, it's next to impossible to find a shorthand book in the U.S. I actually wound up ordering a guide online and I'm not ashamed to admit it's been collecting dust on my shelf.

See I just found the entire process too time-consuming to learn -- different thicknesses, sounds over words, dotted vowels ... I frankly got frustrated and gave up.

Unfortunately for my Pitman book, I've since moved on to learning Gregg shorthand. I still think I can function without it, but I can see moments where it would be useful and I've decided to tack it onto my reading list.

Hey, it's something to do when Twitter's down.

I’m getting old. My joints are squeaking, hair is growing where it shouldn’t be, and I can no longer break dance. Well, I never did break dance, but if I wanted to now, I probably wouldn’t be able to. Years pass by faster than a prune after drinking a bottle of Ex-lax.

Why am I feeling so old? Tomorrow is my birthday. That’s right, I’m officially older. The oldest person alive…in my house. Tomorrow, I am turning…I can’t even believe I have to come to terms with this…32. Yes, I know what you’re thinking…”Goddamn that’s old!” I know, but you don’t have to rub it in, you…you…you young whippersnapper you. I’d kick your butt for being so disrespectful, but I’m too tired and can’t lift my foot past my ankle.

Having lived all these countless years (well, not countless…32), I have much wisdom and advice to pass on to the generations that follow me. So young ones, listen closely:

· When you lose the TV remote control, you can still change the channel. It may require getting up and walking to the TV, but it is possible. If you try really hard, you can also increase and decrease the volume and turn it on and off.

· There was a time when every other word in the English language was not preceded by the lowercase letter “i.” It’s iEnglish for iGod’s sake—speak properly! Now where did I leave my iPhone?

· Hannah Montana is not the greatest musical act ever. That honor is reserved for New Kids on the Block. Damn right, “The right stuff, baby!”

· If you want to learn valuable lessons from someone, go talk to them. Don’t go on the internet and read blogs…wait, ignore that one.

That’s all the lessons I have so far. If someday I live to the ripe old age of 35, I may impart more. Unless dementia kicks in even further, in which case perhaps you can come over and change my diaper. Oh, and pay some of my bills, because chances are that I haven’t for a while…might as well start paying them now, if you don’t mind.

Hold on…be right back…

…

…

…thanks for waiting. It’s amazing how age shrinks your bladder. I had something really important to say…damn dementia!

So as I sit on my virtual rocking chair, swaying back and forth on my Second Life porch, I reminisce about years gone by…the good old days without all this worthless technology…oops, out of time. I have to go check my Twitter page, play some Scrabulous on Facebook, play GTA IV on Xbox Live and watch the game on HDTV, so no more time to blog about the good old days.

I was quite irritated to find out recently that if you have a Google hosted domain and use that to login to Gtalk, you cannot communicate with Twitter without jumping through a few hoops, and even then, only under certain conditions. My first thought was that "these sort of things" should just work (tm). Turns out I was really wrong ...

Kavinda explains in detail how to get this setup the right way.

Here is the executive summary:

Unlike what is probably thought by some (like me earlier)Twitter is not logged into Gtalk to talk to you. It uses XMPP/Jabber to talk to you. If you have logged into gtalk with your own domain name, how do you think twitter knows that it needs to send the message to gtalk's servers? As Joe Beda explains, it is almost like SMTP. So instead of MX records, Twitter looks up your SRV records from DNS. So to talk to Twitter (and other such apps that will be using this mechanism in the future), you need to setup SRV records for your domain. And that means you need to have complete control over your domain's DNS records.

Unfortunately, that leaves me out of the Twitter-via-IM scene. I use a managed DNS service from ResellerClub, which uses the otherwise wonderful Logicboxes interface. However Logicboxes doesn't allow you to edit SRV records for your domain yet. :( I hope someone high up in Directi sees my plight and makes this one of the highest business priorities in Logicboxes. Not likely. :P

Sigh!

You may know about my growing relationship with Twitter - see previous posts here & here.

Not only am I now a Twitter addict, but I've started using Twitter add-ons! Here's an overview of the ones I know something about.

TwitBin is an extension for Firefox that allows you to send and receive messages via twitter in your Firefox browser. It's a quick download that shows as an icon in the top bar of Firefox. When you click the icon a window opens on the left-hand side of your browser & you can post a Tweet without leaving the site you're on. I'm using this one & like it - great if you want to post a link.

twhirl is a desktop twitter client, based on the Adobe AIR platform. It allows you to post short 140-character updates about what you are doing, as well as following your twitter friends and read all their updates, replies anyone sends to you, and direct messages to your account. You can also answer to another user by replying or sending him/her a private direct message.

twhirl has a lot of other features, for example looking up other user’s profiles, searching public tweets (powered by terraminds)

The latest version added support to post your updates to two other services, Pownce and Jaiku.

I'm not using this one - but some of my Twitter buddies are & seem to like it.

Summize allows you to search for keywords amongst tweets. You can just type in a word & hit 'search' or you can do an advanced search that allows you to:

I can't connect to it with Twhirl

I can't connect to it with Firefox

When I ping www.twitter.com I get 100% packet loss

If only there was some kind of nearly-instant messaging service that could inform me of such outages. ;)

Twitter sure knows how to grab defeat out of the jaws of success. Twitter was featured on BusinessWeek today.

We're talking about this on Gillmor Gang right now, the audio will be up later.

So, I finally gave in and registered for Twitter even though I really do not understand the practical purpose of the tool. I mean I understand what it's for - telling people what you're up to at every minute of the day - I just don't know what it does for a shy guy like me and especially what it does professionally. Yet, I read library blog after library blog hailing Twitter as a great social networking tool. So I caved and decided to give it a try. Don't want to be classified as a troglodyte who's afraid of change after all.

Long-time readers will recall that I went through the same process with Facebook last year. Even though I found some things that Facebook is good for (Susan compares it to collecting one's friends like Hummels), and find it fun to play games with my friends, professionally I've done zilch. Seemingly the moment I was convinced to sign up with Facebook was when Facebook-backlash began. Now people frustrated with Facebook offer plaudits for Twitter instead. So maybe I can be ahead of the curve, or at least on the curve this time. So far I've found that Twitter is a good forum for writing Haiku and publishing Overheard-type comments. If you want to follow me you can find me at http://twitter.com/Othemts.

Here's a typical article Why Twitter Matters from iLibrarian.
