“Tagging is an open and informal method of categorizing that allows users to associate keywords with online content (webpages, pictures & posts). Unlike library subject cataloging, which follows a strict set of guidelines, tagging is completely unstructured and freeform, allowing users to create connections between data anyway they want.” (Learning 2.0: 23 Things; 2008)  

      We have already used two tools in this course which allow you to tag: Library Thing and Flickr. This week we will explore tagging further and look at Del.icio.us, a social bookmarking manager that lets you bookmark web pages and add tags to categorize these bookmarks.

      We will also take a brief look at Technorati, a blog search engine. Essentially, Technorati collects and highlights thousands of blogs in one spot to allow for better browsing and more efficient updates on your favourite blogs. Technorati might seem a bit overwhelming at first but don’t worry. The purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to Technorati, you are not expected to know it or understand it in depth. 

Assignment #6: Due Oct. 19/08.

1. View the Del.icio.us tutorial. (8 min.) and learn what this tool has to offer.
2. Create a Del.icio.us account and add 5 bookmarks.
3. Add 1 bookmark that has been added by many other people. Can you see what comments and tags they have added?
4. Explore the Technorati website and try searching for Web 2.0 related blog posts using the Blog tab and the search engine. Do you get different results? Which way do you prefer?
5. Watch this Technorati tour to learn about some of Technorati’s newest features. (5:39 min)
6. Create a blog post about your experience using Del.icio.us. Would this tool be useful for your organization, why or why not? Would you use this tool for personal or work purposes, why or why not? Briefly discuss your experience using Technorati. Did you like this tool?

Make comments on other people's blogs.  This is an excellent brand building strategy.  Find blogs relevant to your client's interests using search engines like Google or Yahoo and share your thoughts and opinions by making comments on these blogs.  Include your contact information and see how fast you start showing up on Google.  Journalists also read these blogs and don't be surprised if they start contacting you when they need sources for their stories.  It's happened to me on several occasions all because I made comments on other blogs.   

Write informational articles and publish them on a web site or blog.   Make sure you're not writing a sales pitch.  Offer information that your prospective readers will find valuable like things to consider in the preconstruction process, etc.   Then let people know about the articles.  Include a link in your email signature and let your clients and friends know about this information source.  

Survey your prospective clientsand send a news release of the results.  This helps position you as an expert and encourages journalists to contact you.

Build a list of client trade publications along with the journalists who write for them and start the relationship building process.  Many of these publications now have blogs.  Start the relationship building process by commenting on their blogs.  Then pick up the phone once in a while and ask them how you can help them.  Ask them what type of articles they are interested in writing about.  If you can't provide the information they need, offer them access to colleagues who can.  

Interview industry experts and publish them on the news page of your web site or blog.  Featuring industry leaders in the news section of  your web site or blog is a great way to build good will.  Video and/or podcast interviews are also effective ways to get media attention and PR for your company. 

Finally, it's important to take a stance.  Too many people are afraid to state opinions for fear of alienating others.  Show me a group of 10 people and I'll show you a group that often has differences in opinion.  That's ok.  Disagreements promote dialog and make articles much more interesting.  The goal should be to create interest, not consensus.

At first my blog was listed as "protected" -- no name -- and I couldn't figure out why.  Turns out there must be a "ping" -- which some sites do automatically, but apparently Technorati doesn't.  Anyway, I did a search on Wordpress and found pingomatic and got it to ping technorati and everything was fixed.  I guess if I had posted a new post that a ping might have
been generated ... but its done now.

I think updates will be automatic -- but, if not, I will just use pingomatic again.

Still wish I could categorize/tag from withing Flock.... maybe I can install Scribefire on Flock ... but I will wait to try.  I don't want to screw up this browser just yet.  I am still hoping to get Firefox fixed.

You may have to ask your health-food store to special-order these products at first, but once they do, get them to try them; then, you may find them willing to just include them as a regular part of their inventory! They definitely are tasty, as well as healthier. Whole Foods carries both.

So, let's learn more. The first product is called SO Delicious, and it is a coconut-water based yoghurt, sweetened by low-glycemic agave nectar, and containing what is possibly a newer combination of friendly probiotic cultures for your body, which include: L. Bulgaricus, L. Plantarum, L.Rhamnosus, L.Paracasei, Bif. Lactus and S. Thermopolis (Jordan Rubin, CEO of Garden of Life, trained as a naturopathic physician, but doesn't practice, says he has serious reservations about S. thermopolis, which is also on every other yoghurt label I have looked at. Oh well, an opportunity missed.).

Last week, for the first time in ages, I had to go through a course of antibiotics, as I had injured one eye, and it became red and swollen. Anytime a person is on antibiotics, their friendly gut bacteria are also being killed, and so it is important to replace those 'friendlies' each day, while you take the medicine (use yoghurt about 2 hours after at least one of your pill doses) and then for at least a week beyond that. This time, I used the SO Delicious yoghurt as a source of my 'friendlies', and it was an effective source. I had a normal week, without discomfort, and I was helping by not adding dairy, which disrupts most adults' guts in various ways, when the gut was already under seige.

I still think that any yoghurt has to be considered a dessert. In addition to being dessert-like, SO Delicious has the perfect mineral profile, which matches our blood plasma, (that's why clean, fresh coconut-water was used during World War 2, as an IV in surgery, in the Pacific islands, when they ran out of other options).

But, SO Delicious is not a protein source like dairy yoghurt is. And, it's fats are saturated fats, (they are no choesterol, vegetarian) but unlike dairy yoghurt, these coconut fats contain the healthy medium-chain essential fatty acids our bodies need for making hormones like progesterone. So far, this year, coconut fats have kept my post-menopausal progesterone levels better balanced to prevent the problems of excess estrogen running rampant. Progesterone and estrogen must always have a ratio to one another.

SO Delicious' carbohydrate comes from agave nectar, which is a low-glycemic sweetener from blue agave cactus, which is very useful for stable-blood-sugar for diabetics and anyone who understands the health issues created by other sugar sources. There are no artificial ingredients.

SO Delicious comes in many flavors: plain (slight coconut hint of flavor), vanilla, coconut-pineapple, blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, passionate mango are the ones I remember. I have tried all of them except strawberry; it's still sitting in my fridge. All tasted delicious, along a continuum, with plain on one end and passionate mango on the other (I liked mango best; raspberry and blueberry tied for second and coconut-pineapple for third).

The nutrition profile is 140 calories for the 1 container serving, and Fat 6 grams, Carbohydrate 24 grams, Protein 1 gram, Cholesterol 0 grams.

So Delicious also have several frozen coconut desserts (like an ice-cream), that I saw at Whole Foods this afternoon, but I haven't tried them yet; my husband said they may be soy-based, so I will have to check (I did, some are soy coconut-water combos; others are only coconut-water based. Read the PDF above).

I want only the coconut-based products, as I will not use the soy; it is a goiterogen, which slows (and possibly harms) the thyroid gland, so we always limit our use of soy, especially anything other than the whole bean (edamame)(whole soy beans have a few protective elements, I believe, that make it a little less damaging).

The next item was found by my husband (I've helped him learn to be quite a discerning shopper; he's a great guy!). It IS a coconut-water based frozen ice-cream like treat called Luna and Larry's Organic Coconut Bliss . They have about 6 flavors. So far, we have tried the Chocolate Fudge and the Cherry Amaretto. All our family gave each flavor a thumbs-up.

David Meerman Scott posted 10 ideas for Century 21 on his blog.  Many people commented including yours truly in this blog.  Two days after the top 10 ideas were posted, they were indexed at number six on Google.  The results are incredible and don't discount the cost.  As Scott points out in his latest post, one blogger was able to help Century 21 reach the first page in a Google search result.

Well, as you may have guessed, the post about Fallout 3 gracing the concrete walls of Metro Center went over pretty well. Let me refine that statement, actually. Once Joystiq picked it up, the Internet basically exploded (perhaps a slight exaggeration) with three ridiculous phrases that could very well be forever connected, thanks to Google and its insane archiving capabilities. "Like, LEGIT stared," "Digital Metropolis," and "Fallout 3" will be forever linked together...that is, until the Internet crashes because no one has any money to cover the monthly server payments thanks to this financial avalanche.

Anyway, for those of you who linked to my little blog about the Fallout 3 ad in Metro Center, thank you. Seriously. It turned out to be a hilarious little turn of events that started with a phone call from Joystiq and ended with about 25 references on other gaming, political, and grab-bag blogs. This is the beauty of the Internet, I guess. Something as inane as a horrifically bad iPhone photo of a subway ad gets picked up, and then 24 hours later, 1500 people come to check out Digital Metropolis. I love how the Internet works sometimes. In short, thanks. I am listening to "Dollars and cents" by Radiohead and I can't help but think that some of the people got a few dollars from linking to me from ad revenue and all I care about is the recognition on Google and Technorati!

Anyway -- I want to give a quick shout out to "Kath and Kim," the new comedy on NBC, for being absolutely wretched. I was definitely, definitely not the target audience, but...wow. Maybe the most unfunny show I've seen since the Geico Cavemen hit the airwaves last year. And on that note, good night!
