First LiMo, then Andriod, and now Symbian; the mobile industry is adopting Open Source at a dramatic

First LiMo, then Andriod, and now Symbian; the mobile industry is adopting Open Source at a dramatic rate. I believe that most mobile phones will run an Open Source software stack within 3 years. How will this affect the Mobile Device Value Chain? What threats are posed to the incumbents? What opportunities arise for new entrants? Here are some thoughts.

A simplified view of the current Value Chain looks like this: Money flows from the End User through Network Operators, and other channels to OEMs who purchase Operating System software. Everybody in this value chain would like to impact the software build on the device, but it is increasingly difficult the further from the developers you get. Even Tier 1 operators, with their massive financial muscle only have a limited impact, at great cost (eg VodafoneLive). The situation is far from ideal, and suppresses the rate of change and innovation in our industry.

Unsurprisingly, Google, Nokia etc have spotted the problem, and are doing something about it. The impact will be huge.

Although the advent of OpenSource mobile operating systems gives anyone the ability to change the software shipped on our phones, the world only changes if they actually want to; do they see value in doing so. The answer is absolutely yes! Consider Brands (eg Coca Cola, MTV), Banks, Government Organisations, each with their own ability to get phones with software targeted to their user demographic. However, not everyone has the skills to make a distribution, which means a new space opens up for packagers who will take requirements from the channel distributors and create tailored builds. The value chain now looks more like this: Mobile Operating System software moves from being a link in the value chain to being a supporting function to all elements in the chain.

So who will occupy this new space? Clearly incumbents will be keen to dominate, so expect Google, Nokia/Symbian, OpenMoko, and LiMo to be major players. Others also have an opportunity, distribution companies such as Brightpoint are already well positioned, as are traditional desktop/server Linux packagers such as RedHat, Debian and Ubuntu. This is a big space, so there is plenty of room for horizontal and vertical segmentation.

The loosers? Almost certainly the Tier 1 device manufacturers (consider Nokia a Tier 0). These guys will struggle as Tier 2 manufacturers create O/S agnostic, commoditised hardware for consumption by the packagers and channels.

Exciting times.

beh sarebbe fantastico!

Cosa ne pensate?

Lalu cari aplikasi alternatifnya , ketemu ScrnSnapS60.

Great article by a recent convert from the Symbian S60 based phones (Nokia N95, etc.) to the iPhone

Great article by a recent convert from the Symbian S60 based phones (Nokia N95, etc.) to the iPhone 3G, highlighting the points where the S60 OS excels...

After finally getting my thoughts on the iPhone 3G out into a blog post last week I felt it was finally time to go back to using a Nokia S60 device again. I’d really missed the S60 experience and I’ve wanted to try some of the new devices running the latest software (top of my list right now is the Nokia E71).

As has become the norm I posted my thought to Twitter and got this reply from Frank:

That got me thinking about what I really missed about the S60 experience while I was using the iPhone and here is what I came up with.

Don't get me wrong, I think the iPhone is a great device and is helping the US cellular market get up to the technological speed that the rest of the world has been enjoying for years. (And you can't beat that iPhone web browser)

But, for all the iPhone's success, it still doesn't have basic features that I use on my N95 daily, the biggest of which being the ability to run background applications, and the copy/paste functionality.

I'm tempted, like Frank, to upgrade to an E71 (I really want a QWERTY keyboard on my phone) instead of switching over to the iPhone 3G.

Symbian: Folded descriptor contents, and case-insensitivity

In Symbian jargon, the term “folded” means “case-insensitive“. If you grope

In Symbian jargon, the term "folded" means "case-insensitive". If you grope throughout the Symbian docs and API looking for the term case-insensitive, you will be hard-pressed to find anything.

If you have dabbled with descriptors enough, you may be familiar with methods like Match(), Find(), Compare(), etc. By default, their operations are case-sensitive. However, there are folded variants of these methods available too, for, you guessed it, case-insensitive mode. They have an 'F' attached to the end of their names, such as, MatchF(), FindF(), CompareF(), etc. They work by folding the contents of the descriptors which are their arguments first, and then applying their respective functional semantics on them -- or, simply, for MatchF(), it applies a case-insensitive match operation.

It is not every day that you may need to perform any operation against data without worrying about the case-sensitivity of that data, but when you do, and if you find yourself working with Symbian, you may likely quickly find yourself floundering in the API, without much or any help.

That is just Symbian.
