Almost 12 months ago now, myself and a close mate decided to organise an indo surf trip for July 07. After many long hours scouring the Internet, for our options, we decided on a not so well known island, called Panaitan Island. Frankly I didn't care where we went as long as there were quality waves and I was getting out of my home town.

After contacting "Just Dreaming Surf Safaris", which to be honest was bloody hard to find on the net, we booked and paid, 2 months in advance. Flights were booked, and accommodation in Jakarta before and after arranged. At the time I worked for an accommodation website and sourced some very cheap 5* accom. That's industry jargon for accommodation.

After my initial readings of Panaitan Island, it seemed that everyone who had visited the place held it in high regard . Both for its wave quality and its World Herritage Listed sourounds. There was however one issue that was constantly discussed and ridiculed, a surf camp built on the island and for the record we were not at the camp, but on a boat.

The weeks passed and in eager anticipation we waited, blissfully unaware of the amazing 10 days that lay ahead.

1. Demo Applications

All of us have applications installed on our systems that are trial or demo versions of programs that triggered an interest or which we may have wanted to investigate. Any which way, these programs must be removed from your system before running a web interface. A suggestion that i have (Which will be discussed in detail in the near future), is that such application testing be done in a Virtual PC. This is a secondary 'PC' which runs from within your host computer, sharing host resources to opperate. This generates much less of a threat for your day-to-day computing experience.

2. Printing and other devices

There are two benefits with installing all devices on a PC before connecting to the internet. Firstly, Windows Update will update any drivers that are WHQL signed and installed on your PC for you. Secondly, specifically relating to printing and removeable storage, you will come across items on the web which you may want to print or download to share with your friends and family. That's a fact.

3. User Accounts

DO NOT USE YOUR ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT AS A DAY-TO-DAY ACCOUNT!!!!! This is the biggest hole you could have. Secure your Admin account with a strong password and create a general password protected user account for each user that will be using the PC. This minimizes the risk of a hacker getting to your data. They may still be able to access the PC itself but at least the data is behind that extra barrier.

4. Restore Point

As a fail safe mechanism, i suggest that a Restore Point be generated at this point. Just to have something to fall back on if the 'paw-paw hits the fan'.

5. The Router

This is the key component of broadband technology and I can almost guarantee that if you are on a broadband you are behind a router. A modem is another option, but I ask you, why would you want to do that? Anyhow, I wont judge. =)

In this age of viruses, worms, and other Internet infections, a router filtering the data flow between you and the outside world coming at you at broadband speeds offers one aditional layer of protection. Connecting a PC directly to the Internet means that PC gets its own IP address, which means it can be seen by every sleazebag with malicious intent. Any guesses why I am not so keen on using a modem?

I better make arrangements with Sotheby's to deliver my art.  I left NYC without giving them instructions, and they want to know where and when it should be delivered.  Frankly, I'm going to try to convince them to store it for the summer, and I'll deal with it when I get back.

The hard yards ahead of the spin-off venture will not be in securing funding but in convincing the market.

Convincing the market means explaining how this new wireless chip will revolutionise the delivery of video. The reason wireless is important is because it is easy. People want don't want to fiddle around with Ethernet cables on an STB, they want to plug it in and for it to work and wireless is the only way to achieve this. On top of this the wireless connection has to be blindingly fast, 802.11g won't cut it for a mainstream consumer device - downloading high quality video takes too long. At 5 gigabits per second the NICTA chip fits the bill.

People won't wait 40 minutes to download a movie even though that is far quicker than waiting for a disc to come from Netflix. Until these speeds come down to under five minutes video downloads won't take off. One option is to develop software which can start playing the video while it is still downloading but the real answer is radically improving download speeds and that what will convince the market of NICTA'a value. I expect every single next generation STB will need this chip which is what get VCs excited. I don't think they will have any trouble getting the cash.

Improving the speed from the wireless router to STB is only one half of the equation. There is not much use in developing a blazing wireless connection with if Internet connections are still chugging along at under 10Mbps. In the UK this means a complete infrastructure upgrade, fortunately this seems to be going ahead with a project to lay fibre optics in the sewer system. Once complete the UK will be able to get speeds of up to 100Mbps so props to H20 for pioneering this. I'll certainly be one of their first customers when they reach London. Another benefit is they won't have to dig up any roads to do this which I am delighted about since at any one time Thames Water seem intent on digging up at least two sections of my bus route to work. This is an entirely mysterious process as there never appear to be any workers around- just fences, holes and exposed pipework.

San Onofre State Beach needs our help!

The toll road backers in Orange County are appealing to the federal government to override the Coastal Commission and get special approval to build their toll road through San Onofre State Beach.

Click here and take 30 seconds to send a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, urging him to deny the toll road appeal.

You'll remember that on February 6, the California Coastal Commission voted overwhelmingly to deny federal Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) consistency certification for the Foothill-South Toll Road. The hearing lasted 14 hours and was packed with over 3,500 people. At the end of the day, the Commission voted 8-2 to oppose consistency certification for the road, finding that it violated virtually every provision of the state's Coastal Act.

But the TCA has appealed that strong decision to the U.S. Department of Commerce and is working to overturn the Commission's ruling. The Secretary of Commerce will be making a final decision on the appeal and needs to hear from you!

Park supporters need to make their voices heard. Help us tell decision-makers in Washington D.C. that the federal government and the current Administration cannot overturn the Coastal Commission's clear and thoughtful decision on this matter.

Please send a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, urging him to deny the toll road appeal. Public comments will be accepted until May 28 – tell your friends and family to send a letter supporting San Onofre State Beach, too!

Not so long ago I posted a comment on Extreme Glacial Skiing where Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala surfed glacial waves. I thought that was pretty extreme but in England and Ireland they seem to think extreme conditions are fairly normal.

According to Jane Fryer in the Daily Mail, "you haven't really surfed until you've done it in the middle of the British winter" as "thanks to low-pressure systems and mid-Atlantic storms, this is when the really big waves come rolling in."

Waves such as 'the Cribbar' - a 30ft wave off Newquay which "travels faster than a galloping horse and is known locally as the widowmaker" or, according to Robert Booth in the Guardian, you could travel to the west coast of Ireland to try your luck against 'Aileen's Wave'. Britain's top surfers, known as 'heavy water pioneers' scrape ice off their boards and brave wind chills as cold as -9* to tackle the 50ft monster.

"Surfing big waves in winter is one of the biggest thrills in all sport", said Booth.

Ted Deerhurst, a pioneer of British surfing, has compared the experience to "jumping off a three-storey house, and then having the house chase you down the street". If the surfer falls off he or she can be held down for up to 40 seconds and pounded against the rocks. If that happens, "you curl up in a ball and cover your face as the whole of the ocean churns over you," says Duncan Scott, the 29-year old president of the British Surfing Association. "You go to your 'happy place' and try to relax and not panic."

Rather you than me I think. The lure of the blue skies, sunny climes and blue blue water holds more appeal for me than grey freezing oceans... but I admire those who challenge themselves to such an extent!

Many tourists enjoy diving, surfing and other water sports in Tobago, while others enjoy horse riding, cycling in Tobago, or even a round of golf in one of their many courses. 1. Honolulu, Hawaii – Yeah, I know, Hawaii has been surfed to death. You’d be hard-pressed to find a secluded beach at any point in the day! Don’t be discouraged, though. Why would I put this here if there wasn’t a surf spot? A little ways off from downtown, you can find this beach if you look a bit. You have to trek a bit of dangerous path to get there. The waves aren’t packing all the time, but when they do pick up, it’s a great place to get some surfing done. Hardly knows about this place, so no asking the locals!

2. Lanuza, Surigao del Sur, Philippines – This spot in this island country is a well-kept secret. And for good reason! Despite a popular spot for surfing competitions, it’s hard to even get there, with the trip being five or so hours from the nearest airport. Siargao also overshadows this spot, being the country’s top surf destination. The place should be relatively empty of people. There are ten surfing grounds there, so you can change destinations if the spot you are in is too crowded for you. The locals are also very friendly and hospitable. Go there from November to January for the best waves. Just don’t expect a five-star hotel to stay in. This is a remote town after all.

3. Oahu, Hawaii – Yeah, another Hawaii place. East of Oahu is a beach with great, clean waves, and is hardly inhabited! Like the others, getting there can be challenge but should not deter the determined surfer. You are awarded with regular waves upon arrival, and should give you quite a workout. Summer is the best time to surf here because of the improved waves, and also because everyone else is going to the crowded spots!

4. Lake Michigan, Sheboygan, Wisconsin – Specifically, “The Elbow”. Only the bravest surfers dare come here. The water is freezing cold! Ice is also in the water, plus there needs to be a storm nearby to create the best waves. Dangerous, yes, but this stops normal people from surfing here. Are you a real man? Take the challenge!

Personally, I prefer to surf with a good amount of people, but if flying solo is your thing, these spots will hit the spot! What other surf places can you recommend to us?

I'm slowly getting back into the grove of trading.  My mind is starting to focus, and I'm thinking both logically and rationally.  My edge is returning.  That trip to New York, although expensive, was the best thing that I could have done.  Plus, I picked up a nice piece of art.

My sister is staying here for the summer, and telecommuting. I offered to let her move in permanently, but I don't think she would do that.  I hope I don't cramp her style:)

I need to revisit my Mexico plans, and see what John wants to do regarding the trip.  He's really in the mood for Mexico, and wants a good surf trip.  I will say that the place we're staying, San Blas, could be described as rustic.  In fact, rustic would be a very charitable description.  However, the waves will be good, the beer cold, and the tropical nights will allow me to get my book done.

I ordered another Panasonic Toughbook, CF-19 Tablet with digitizer.  This is the laptop that I'm going to take with me on our extended vacation.

I need to get over to see Denise's grave and make sure that the head stone is right.  I need to bring some flowers, and just sit down and have a chat with here.  That's what I really miss.

Alternate Title: Chairman of the Board

Story: I don't know what your childhood was like, but mine, other than being Jewish, bore no resemblance to anything that the Paskowitz clan experienced. Over the past few decades you might have seen a feature on a news program about this singular family. This is an intriguing documentary directed and written by Doug Pray. As the film opens we meet 84 year old Dorian Paskowitz. With his piercing blue eyes he regales us with stories about his philosophy of life, health, sex and child rearing.

Paskowitz went to Stanford Medical School and began his life as would be expected for an accomplished doctor. But after two failed marriages he threw in the towel, toured the world and decided to live life on his own terms. He married an extraordinary woman and raised nine children while living in a 24 foot trailer at the beach or anywhere else they felt like exploring. His kids did not go to school as Dorian felt that life was enough of an education. His kids majored in surfing and stayed together until they reached their 20's.

The adult children are the talking heads and it is fascinating to hear them speak about their lives in retrospect. I do not want to spoil any of the stories but I found the whole concept deliciously appealing. Dorian claims to have introduced surfing to Israel. The surf camp they founded still exists but it now holds sessions in Cabo San Lucas, Montauk and San Diego. For some of Dorian's philosophy go to his web site and check out his book.

Visual Art: What's not to like about the beach, the waves and blue sky. The camper part was a bit claustrophobic for my taste.

Theater Audience: A theater full of aging Gidgets and Moon Doggies seen at the IFC.

Weather: It is always good weather for surfing in this film.

Quirky Meter: As far as lifestyles are concerned, I think this would qualify for a 1 on the quirky scale.

Predictability Level: It was interesting to see what happened to all nine Paskowitz kids now that they are all adults.

The Environmental Protection Agency report, which was published yesterday, identifies county Galway as having two of the worst beaches for water quality in Ireland. The environmental watchdog deemed the water at two Galway beaches, Clifden and Na Forbacha, unsafe to swim or bathe in because they failed to meet the standards for ‘faecal coliforms’ — human or animal waste material in the water.

Just two other beaches in the country have failed to meet this basic European water quality standard.

It is the third year in a row Clifden failed to comply with the regulations while Na Forbacha also failed in 2005 but complied in 2006.

The year is flying by, so I better give you a little update on what has been going on in my life.

I surfed in the Margaret River WQS event and only made through it the trials and lost in the first round of the main event which I was very disappointed about but I guess I will have to wait until next year to have another crack.

Every year while the Margaret River event is on, we play a game of cricket. I put together a team made up of surfers on tour and my local shaper Chris "Chapstar" Chapman puts together the local indoor cricket team.

For the first four years we played indoor cricket but for the last two years we have played a 20/20 outdoor game. It's the best fun, check out the shots above and this little video clip below.

After the Margaret River event I was off to South Africa to the Quiksilver Pro, Durban. I was there to commentate for the live web cast along with Martin Potter. Great event with some great waves and with the local boy Davey Weare winning the event there were some drinks had at the end of the week.

Now I'm back in Bali and for the last few weeks it's been pretty much
pumping since I have been back. I have been surfing all over the place but mostly my local spot Canggu.

Friday. Only for the back roads around Canggu because I don't want to end up
road kill!!!

This is my new one (9'0 x 28 x 4). I can't wait to get on it.

Zerwałem się dziś z pracy, bo od tygodnia leczę przeziębienie i nie mogę skubaństwa wyleczyć. A, że nie miałem dziś nic do roboty więc zamiast grzebać na stronkach z laptopami stwierdziłem, że odeśpię i podleczę się trochę. Siostra wybyła była na jakiś czas, więc wycyganiłem na te parę dni laptopa. Foty poszły w obróbkę, nadrobiłem zaległości w czytaniu innych blogów, nawet jakiś film ściągnąłem. Pięknie jest...

Wracam do wyjazdu z przed 2 tygodni (a wydaje się, że to było wieki temu)... Kilka fotek z moich (niezbyt udanych) prób surfowania:

Benidorm, 5 rano

Ponieważ bilety do Polski są horendalnie drogie (np. ostatni weekend czerwca - 300€!), to na długi weekend, zamiast do Wrocławia, wybraliśmy się z Alexem do Benidorm. Lot do Alicante, tam wynajęliśmy samochód (Ford Ka - dla nas dwóch jak znalazł) i w drogę. Miasto paskudne - bloki jakieś totalnie od czapy, dookoła pustynia prawie że. Ale kiedy wreszcie odnaleźlismy swóje apaartamenty i wyszliśmy po 21 'na miasto' - zakochałem się w Hiszpanii. Piątkowy wieczór zaczyna się od kolacji. Paella z owocami morza, sangria - pycha! Potem (było już grubo po 22) poszliśmi wzdłuż plaży uliczką pełną klubów. Benidorm (o czym dowiedzieliśmy się już po kupieniu biletów) to jedno z ulubionych miejsc wakacji Anglików i mocno jest nastawione na turystów. Odpuściliśmy sobie jednak wszystkie hard rock caffees, pełne ludzi po 40stce.

Wybraliśmy Penelope - lokal nazwany na cześć pewnej znanej Hiszpanki ;) Na wejście dostaliśmy shoty tequili za free i zniżkę na pierwszego drinka ;) Nadmienić należy, że w hiszpańskich klubach nie skąpią alkoholu i leją 2x (jeżeli ja zamawiam) lub 3x (jeżeli Alex zamawia po hiszpańsku) więcej. A upijać się nie ma po co, bo widoki upajają wystarczająco. Jak na razie Hiszpanki to jedyne dziewczyny jakie spotkałem, które

mogłyby się równać urodą z Polkami. I tylko wszechobecny dym papierosowy psuł zabawę. Po 4 miesiąca w wolnych od dymu klubach Irlandii to było trudne do przeżycia. Łzawiące oczy, śmierdzące ciuchy i kac gigant - bez tego mogę się doskonale obejść. Co ciekawe impreza rozkręciła się koło 1 w nocy. Zwineliśmy się po 5 rano, a i tak po drodzę spotkaliśmy 4 dziewczyny, które zapraszały nas żebyśmy poszli z nimi na

kolejną imprezę. To jest życie ;)

Następnego dnia plaża i jeszcze więcej dobrego jedzenia, a wieczorem powtórka z nocnego szaleństwa. I tak do poniedziałku, z tym że niedzielny wieczór był lajtowy, bo jedyne osoby w klubach to turyści.

Nauczyłem się kilku nowych hiszpańskich słow: fuet (katalońska kiełbasa - pyszna), churros (slodkie, tłuste racuchopodone coś) i horchata (napój z sam nie wiem czego, ale dobry). Więcej nauki w planach, bo Hiszpanki kuszą a nie bardzo mówią po angielsku. No i do samej Hiszpanii na pewno wrócę, ale nie do Benidorm.

Dublin nie składa broni

Po powrocie okazało się, że w Dublinie lato. Słońce, lekki wiaterek. Pięknie. Żeby jeszcze tylko kobiety nie odbiegały tak znacznie od polsko-hispzańskich standardów. No, ale nie ma co narzekać. W końcu trochę Polek tu jest. ;)

I znowu wciągnął mnie wir zajęć. Środa wspinaczka, czwartek impreza w brazylijskim klubie w towarzystwie (nareszcie!) pięknych kobiet. Sobota domówka u Dominiki (przydał się przywieziony z Hiszpanii Havana Club). W niedziele kac gigant, a tu o 15:00 trzeba było zagrać mecz tag-rugby. Myślałem, że zjadę w tym słońcu. Tradycyjnie wszyscy na kacu, tradycyjnie zaliczyłem przyłożenie, tradycyjnie pary starczyło nam tylko na pierwszą połowę meczu i przegraliśmy. A wieczorem znowu imprezka na zakończenie sezonu. Lajtowo - do 24:00.

Uff!

A teraz się kuruję bo organizm się w końcu zbuntował. A tu trzeba zbierać siły, bo w środę koniec kursu wspinaczkowego i będzie okazja do paru drinków...

A za 19 dni - najazd na Wrocław! Nareszcie! Trzeba pokazać Alexowi, że Polacy nie gęsi i swoje kobiety, imprezy i dobre jedzenie mają!
