When police kicked in the French doors of Danielle Stewart's Rose Bay apartment, they allegedly found the accused murderess sitting on the couch holding an iPod, notepad and pen.

On the way up they had seen her husband, Chaim Kimel lying in the lobby bleeding to death.

He was being nursed by his teenage son while an ambulance rushed to the scene.

"Danielle ..." the dying Mr Kimel allegedly told police, clutching a blood-soaked towel covering his stomach.

A thick trail of blood led police to the couple's front door four floors up, covering the carpet of the communal corridor and spattering the walls. After getting no response to requests to open up, they forced entry. (news)

I know, this is one of those revelations that breaks your heart into tiny little pieces and leaves you curled up in a ball at the foot of your bed, cradling the stuffed rabbit you're embarrassed you still own.

For years and years...okay, for three years...Colbert and Stewart have been hosting two shows that are basically different sides of the same coin. Jon Stewart has normally leaned a little more pro-liberal, while Colbert is "upfront" about being a white male conservative who doesn't see race. But lately, I've been noticing a little change in the dynamic of both shows.

All of a sudden, Jon's making streams of jokes about Barack Obama, and completely ignoring most of the gossip that surrounds McCain. Understandably, this has thrown Colbert for a loop, and we see him defending Obama for being an "elitist" and trying to work more pro-Democrat, anti-McCain jokes in wherever he can legitimately fit them without completely destroying his character.

I know, maybe you're saying to yourself (especially if you know me):
She's just a huge Obama supporter. [True.]
She would be upset at any joke that's made at his expense. [True. New Yorker, watch yourself.]
I bet Stewart is just shifting to the middle, rather than playing it hard liberal. [Wrong.]

When a talk show host has to say to his stunned and silent audience, "You know, it's okay to laugh at him," after a joke, there's something wrong. It was so obviously unsuspected from Stewart that I'm not the only one who noticed. And why are we being treated to this strange behavior? I'll tell you why: John McCain and the Daily Show are carrying on a dirty little affair.

He's been a guest multiple times, and he's always charmed the audience. It makes sense for Jon Stewart to be a little soft, but not to the degree that he's being right now. And not to the point where he's stealing all of Colbert's material because he won't make fun of Obama.

Jon Stewart, I love you. Not as much as I love Colbert, but there's still love there. So why do you insist on hating me so? If you make me choose between you and Obama, you won't win. And you know why? Because I can replace you with more Colbert, but I cannot replace a presidential candidate full of hope with one that will continue to sink the country deeper into debt - a debt of both money and military personnel.

Get back on your horse of moderation that you have ridden for so long, be fair about your lambasting. I'm not asking you not to make fun of Obama, I love that you generally don't pass on anyone. I'm just asking you not to pick on him more so that you have enough material to fill the show without picking on McCain.

Colbert will thank you as well. Because right now, Jon Stewart, your happy little trade off is faltering. Bring it back before it's too late and you've gone over to the Dark Side.

The whole week I've been thinking of this weeks' entry on the 52 project. I had so many opportunities on my mind; like at my new job, in my car on my way to work, during a bier and biefstuk w/ Team Ron, at the CoBrA Museum in Amstelveen, outside during a walk... But none of the above worked out. Where last week I shot my 52 in Marseille, this week's entry is at home. A mi casa. On el balcone to be precise. The light was perfect, but since I'v done one of my previous 52s on the balcony too, I thought I'd take it to a higher level.

Taken from a relaxed chair in the Thalys, on my way to Marseille. The sun was burning, the airco was cooling, the Thalys was speeding, I was heading for fun.

On the way back we stopped at this Gare TGV too. It was a strange experience; as the Thalys stopped on the other side of the track, I never had a good view on the platform. But since the TGV we took on the way back was a double decker, the angle was different, more like a frog's perspective.

But on the whole, it was fun. Fun fun fun.

This evening I met up with Ron and Ronet. It was their last evening in Amsterdam as "Residents" even though they already have settled their uitschrijving from the Amsterdam City Council. Stuff's being packed away, and We were set to have beer and biefstuk, when all of a sudden I was handed a wrapped up package. Two actually.

To my surprise I got a Polaroid! They told me that they had one too many, and it seemed to be the right thing to give that one to me. That was the sweetest thing to do!! While having biefstuk at the Three Sisters, I took a shot of Ronet. That's the Polaroid print you see in the middle, it's on top of the camera. I will post the result later on.

Dear Team Ron;

Thank you so much, it was a pleasure and an honour to have you here in Amsterdam. All the best in Manc Unitedhester, and we will definitely visit you guys over there. Or we could always meet up somewhere in the rest of the world.

This is not a sad goodbye, it's a happy See You Layter!

It was a weird feeling, biking along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Usually hazardous, but now very tranquil and fun to do by bike. ...well, not really. On the other hand: today was the first time ever I did Paris on a bike. To some people Paris by car is suicide, let alone on a bike. But it's very easy actually. Rent a bike. A Velib to be precise. It's one of those rent-a-bikes, but at no charge when the bike is returned within 30 minutes. Set a simple route, check if there's a Velib station near / at your destination. The only things to be aware of are:

a - a bus lane is most of the times shared with bikes (and taxis, other bikes and an occassional car, police car or medics)
b - streets and avenues not suitable for bikes are marked at the beginning of the street (a small sign saying that the bus lane is not to be used by bikers)
c - in case no dedicated bike lane is available, use the curb or the street. Whichever feels more comfortable and whatever is available.
d - the speed of the traffic lights is based on cars. If a traffic light is orange, for heaven's sake; hit the brake. Don't go on, you might be hit by traffic from any side you can think of. And also from the sides you would have never considered.

For the rest of it: a Sunday morning is the best time to hop on a bike.

But, I survived, had a great time on the bike, and will do it again for sure!

Ladies and Gentlemen, please meet Robbert. Robbert and I have known eachother for a couple of years now, and every single time we tried to meet up (beer, going out, dinner, whatever) things got in the way. Sickness, out of town, tired, full schedule, wrong dates, etc.

Finally, we got to the point where we were to meet. I had an opportunity to go to Paris that evening but since we've been trying to meet for a long long time now I thought it would be the right thing to have him over for dinner.

While cooking, Robbert stood on the balcony smoking a fag. Sunlight lit his face and all so beautifully, I decided to turn off the stove and grab my camera. A bunch of clicks later I got some nice portraits I thought. Even Robbert liked them.

Here's to you Robbert, cheers! And thank you for a wonderful evening, I really enjoyed your company.

After having been in-between-jobs for two months now, finally my horizons start to color bright and beautiful. As of Friday I will be employed at my new job. I won't say too much about the job, that's too private, the ones that know me well will be informed or have been informed already. So, my path is going new directions, my life will be having a new description.

As a "Happy New Job" gift, I got this Orchid. It's a phalaenopsis, ain't it purdy? Thank you for your support Perry!

People connate goodbye's with sadness. For the most part, I agree. There is something about shutting the door on someone or something that makes you feel a little weepy. Who hasn't cried over a family member's passing, or a break-up with your significant other? Or felt nervous at the mere idea of leaving home or even leaving school? I can remember feeling extremely sad back in 6th grade, when all of my friends were branching out to different middle schools. I wanted to stand up at my graduation and shout, "Hey! I am NOT okay with this. How about we just go back and re-do this year? Any takers?"

Goodbyes make even those most stoic person nostalgic. Memories from the past come sweeping by, flashing in your mind. You can't help but sit around, laughing about the good old days. I mentioned that I am in the process of leaving my old job, and while I am so excited to be doing something that I love, I do feel a bit heavy-hearted when I think about leaving my old job. No more long walks around the Capitol, long coffee breaks to Starbucks, office potlucks, and Solitaire tournaments.

On the other hand, goodbyes kind of make me excited. They give me a slight thrill at the mere thought of leaving the known and venturing out. You see, goodbyes signal a change. They are symbols for a fresh start, a promise for new beginnings. It's so easy to get stuck in a rut or stuck in a position that you feel you can't get out of. I feel that endings are the way to shake things up, so long as you focus on the positive side.

In honor of my official departure, I share my secret chocolate chip recipe. I make these cookies annually, and never fails they leave their mark on all who eat them. Last year when my friend R left the place where I am currently leaving, I whipped up these bad boys and received huge fanfare. What a way to send someone off! I'd like to think that the tears and hugs I got from my friend R that day were due to her overwhelming sadness of leaving me, but I think that these cookies might've been the real reason.

Initally, this recipe was never going to see the light of day on this blog for one main reason. I consider this recipe to be my dirty little secret. It has been basically the only recipe to survive the numerous attempts to clean out my recipe binder. In fact, it has lived through 3 years in my dangerously cluttered kitchen. I've made these cookies at least 6 times throughout the past 3 years, which is actually a record for any recipe I stumble upon because the likelihood of actually repeating a recipe in my kitchen is slim to nill. There is just too many recipes to try that repeating a recipe doesn't really happen. But these babies, my precious little cookies, will always be kept.

I found this recipe a couple years back on Martha Stewart's website. Look now though, and this recipe is gone. I searched through the multitudes of cookie recipes that Martha has, which took me about 2 hours, and couldn't find the one that matched my printed out version. All the proportions and ingredients were off. Thank God I printed it out or else this recipe would've vanished into thin internet air. Stained with coffee and with bits of chocolate smeared everywhere, the recipe shows its age. But I treasure it like any mother would treasure her child. It's my baby and I ain't leaving it!

I don't know how you like you chocolate chip cookies, but I am a hard person to please. I like them big, fat, and chewy or thin, buttery and crispy. If the crumb is too chewy or the cookie to dense, I will not be pleased. My personal favorite type of cookie is the think and crispy kind, where your teeth crunch into the buttery exterior but melt into the warm chocolate chips. I prefer a larger ratio of brown sugar to white sugar, which gives it an overall more spicy flavor and moist bite. These cookies are the epitome of the perfect crispy cookie. The key to this recipe is using room temperature butter. Always room temperature, people! The Joy of Baking states, "This temperature allows the maximum amount of air to be beaten into your batter. This creaming or beating of your butter or butter and sugar creates air bubbles that your leavener (bakingpowder or baking soda) will enlarge during baking."

When I made these the first time, I left out all other additional ingredients but now I like to add everything and anything to these cookies. This time around, I threw in some Heath toffee bits and man, what a combo! The bits melted into the crispy cookie, and when you bite into them, you not only get a crunch from the natural crispy outsides, but also from the bits of toffee studded around. What else could you want from a cookie?!

As I leave my old job, saying goodbye to the friends and colleagues that I've worked with for the past two years, I feel a little sad and despondent. But, I can't help but feel excited, thrilled at the new possibilities. Out with the old and in with the new, eh? Here's to happy goodbyes and hopeful beginnings!

My Secret Chocolate Chip Toffee Cookies
from Martha Stewart

Ingredients:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 and 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 large egg, room temperature
2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
12 ounces semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped, or 1 twelve-ounce bag semisweet chocolate chips
Heath Toffee bits (I used half the bag but use your own discretion)

Directions:
Heave oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line several baking sheets with parchment paper, and set aside.
Combine butter, and both sugars in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, and beat until light and fluffy. Add vanilla, and mix to combine. Add egg, and continue beating until well combined.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture. Mix on low speed until just combined. Stir in chocolate chips and toffee bits.
Scoop out 2 tablespoons of doug, and place on a prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough, placing scoops 3 inches apart. Bake until just brown around the edges, 16 to 18 minutes, rotating the pans between the oven shelves halfway through baking. Remove from the oven, and let cool slightly before removing cookies from the sheets. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

Yields 24-36 cookies, depending on how big you make them.
