I have sat staring at the screen sometimes thinking "Does this person think that they are Rambo or something?"

So anyway...

...this morning I sat at a local coffee shop here in Georgetown called Bar None. It's a quaint little place. They actually make better coffee than Starbuck's. I think that they need to work on their demographic a bit in order to generate more business, but they haven't asked for my expertise yet. :)

As I sat drinking my quad, extra large mocha latte, I opened up my Gmail account. I see an e-mail from Tom Guajardo.

Tom is one of the agents I work for here at Keller Williams. Many of you know him. He is an unbelievable, top producing agent. But what sets Tom and Helen apart from most everyone I work with are there standards of excellence.

Now I need to be careful here. I am NOT saying that every other agent that I work for doesn't have standards of excellence...or even high standards of excellence. I am merely pointing out that the Guajardo's have standards of excellence unlike anyone that I have ever worked for before. And if those standards of excellence are not met then I am met with 2 high D personalities questioning me as to why the standard wasn't met. Many people can mistake that questioning as ugliness, being rude, too intense, or whatever. But I am a high D as well; and I have very high standards of excellence for my team. So I appreciate their position.

Not through my choice I wont be working at my current school in September, the new year sevens are such that the school feel the need for all learning support staff to be (or able to be) Team Teach trained. This I cannot do due to my weak back so two weeks ago I was told by LSS that I'll be doing supply work in September. I was, and am, sorry to hear this, I really like my current school. As I have it in writing that my current hours are 'safe' for the first term (even if there isn't that much work I will still be paid the same) I wasn't too upset, it's the nature of the work. However I was miffed that the gentleman who makes the staffing decisions in school, my line manager, didn't tell me but evaded the question when I asked him if he'd sorted out the hours for September yet.

That's still not the issue but leads up to it. It was the school's decision that I'm leaving, not mine, but at the end of term meal out last Friday when five other members of staff who are also leaving were given cards and gift vouchers ... I wasn't even mentioned ... I had to blink very had not to cry. It hurt! I thought I was part of the school family!

I've been at school all week, not enjoying the activities week as much as normal but showing face and not moaning as I was tempted to ... except to a couple of the learning support staff, one of whom gave me a lift to and from the meal and on the way back we talked about it a bit, she said she was gobsmacked and felt like crying too! On Wednesday I was surprised and touched, three of them had clubbed together and got me a bottle of wine and a card, so lovely of them (I made them thank you cards on the computer at work putting in my mobile number).

Last night was The Prom, I've been to every after school social while I've worked there, if enough staff don't go these things can't happen and when the kids see that you care enough to come and talk and dance etc as well as do 'duty' it helps with our relationships with them. I semi-seriously thought about blowing it off but didn't ... I went and it was a fab night, the kids really went to town and the atmosphere was fabulous, not a single bit of trouble inside or outside school. The head thanked me for being there, appreciated me being a trouper with the social side of things which was nice.

Today, last day of term, we were told in briefing that another member of staff is leaving, a support staff employed by the school, so another envelope in the office. When I went, she's helped me with things, there were two envelopes! One for me!

On the last day of term, after the children have gone, staff gather for a glass of wine/juice (depending on how we travel) and a word from the head. Along with good byes to the other staff there was a lovely bouquet of flowers and a card for me ... it's nice to be appreciated and I was sooooo glad I'd not gone off in one this week as I had occasionally felt inclined to!

So the Wisdom of Calm ... good things sometimes do come to those that wait and when I start job hunting I'm fairly sure I'll get a good reference from this school ;)

The Vanker family is in for some crazy days and nights as Hudson recovers from this incredible surgery - probably in ways that few of us can begin to imagine. Hudson's life is an amazing story that we all pray will become even more amazing. And let's not forget Scott Gorill (the donor) who will have some significant recovery time as well. [Added 7/18] Updates will be posted on the Vankers new blog.

Owen Hollingsworth continues to recover from his brain surgery. He enjoys cards, letters and emails though he can't easily reply right now.

 

I was fortunate enough to obtain the job at the Library. This job led me to a position as a Library Assistant in the Catalogue section. During my time at the Library, I was very much touched by the many kind gestures of the Chief Librarian and his Deputy. I was allowed to take a leave of absence, not just once, but three times, to go to work in the refugee camps and try to get my family out of Cambodia. People showered me with their generosity of spirit, which helped me tremendously to cope with the fact that I did not know what happened to my family in Cambodia. When they finally arrived in New Zealand as refugees in 1980 and 1981, Library staff provided great assistance through the donation of clothing and other necessities.

 

Many fond memories are flooding back when I think of the time I worked in the Library. I am forever grateful to all.

The article was talking about how an owner can become stale in innovation. Maybe a better word would be complacent. Rather than pushing past the common denominators, i.e. farming, Just Listed/Just Sold, and lead generation, an agent remains comfortable in the "what works." Nothing is wrong with what works. But doesn't it behoove a business owner to always be aware of the trend? After all, if we all stayed in the past we'd still be flipping through a huge map book rather than using GPS when with buyers; we'd be flipping through a big book to look at the MLS instead of using the online system; we'd be sitting around going, "Sheesh, how come that website thingamajiggy (I'm not sure on the spelling of that one) gets so much business," rather than having one built for ourselves. So innovating is a good thing.

 

 

 

Ok, so this guys idea was to get the staff involved in the innovation. He suggests that you/me leave an "idea box" in the office. Then we are to encourage our staff to come up with some ideas to help grow our business and maintain what we already have. If/when that idea generates more profit, the employee will get a bonus.
