[slideshare id=639184&doc=dokumentasi02-1223305825861206-8&w=425]

ANOTHER YEAR...... (as we say every year). You'll see -- one of these days we'll make it to the World Series and I shall make it -- right along the first baseline, cheering them cubbies on. (Unless of course, Jesus returns and raptures us all before then,... which is looking to be quite likely as of now....)

For the early birds, Cornell will be on the Early Show on CBS! Alumni David Price will be doing something or another, but hey free coffee :) /7am EST.

As for now... another long night ahead as I type up scientific reports for why energy levels of mercury are quantized. w00t!

PS. I don't know if anyone's noticed, but recently my blog post titles have been songs. Props if you can guess what they are :)

September 18th has rolled around again, and caused me to turn 21 - bringing a new era of adult life with it

My birthday also signalled the end of a very good summer - with a wedding, a missions trip, a family holiday, time in London and a house-move filling up the whole 3 months.

The new academic year also brought a lot of new challenges...

I'm psyched about all the new things happening this year - from new cell groups and a bigger role in youth group to dissertations, projects and graduation - but I am also unsettled in my heart about what to do. How can God best use me here in Birmingham, ie. what's His plan here - and will He let me in on it? How will I know what to do? Am I just making plans because they sound good or because they are genuinely God-inspired and Christ-driven?

The end result of all these questions is a determination to learn who my God is; to fill my mind with knowledge of his Word, to learn how Jesus did things and where the heart of my Father is. What are the solid, theological foundations that should underly my actions towards everything I put my hand to? I'm yearning for something beyond self-help, better-yourself kind of teaching; I want the Word - some solid, theological teaching that provides frameworks upon which I can hang the answers to my questions.

I'm also very much focusing on the here and now because currently I have no specific pull towards anything once I graduate. But, now that I've written all of this, I'm beginning to realise that it's possible God is building this thirst for knowledge in my heart in preparation for what's to come; in fact, it has been in my prayers for some time to get to know him more and it's crazy how it's coming to fruition now. He works in mysterious ways, does he not?

---

Out of the three camera batteries I have, one is working, one thinks it is fully charged after 2 minutes, and the last one doesn't even register in my charger. So I've lost 2 handy batteries in 2 months. Shucks.

Ye

Before I write a post about today's news, I really should write about yesterday's ^^.

Yesterday was my first official day of University, and one of the most exciting, fun, and enjoyful days I've had since moving to dorms and Beirut. My day started off as it usually did, with me waking up both Maya and myself with my loud alarm, taking a quick shower, getting dressed, and knocking on Leyla's door to say good morning. Once Leyla was dressed, and I had finished getting ready, we left the dorms together and walked towards the Architectural building. Luckily, the bus was just passing by, so we quickly hopped on (Leyla a little reluctant since it was such a short walk from dorms to the building). I got off at my stop, and Leyla continued to the Biology building where she had her first class. Inside, I said hello to some of my fellow classmates, and sat down with them, waiting for our first class to start. While waiting, I saw a familiar looking person come in and sit down across from me. I looked at her for a bit, and thought she looked like a girl I knew from dA called Lynn. Lynn was doing Graphic Design in AUB so it there was a big chance it was her. I walked to up to her and asked her if her name was Lynn and she was like Yeahhh..and I was like I'm the other Lynn from dA..and she was like ohhhhh..hiiii..and that was how Lynn and Lynn met =D. She later asked me how I had recognized her and if it was because of her pink hair...I'm not sure what it was exactly hehe. We talked for a while and then it was time to go to our first class =D

At around 8:30, we entered the lecture room for first class: 'The History of Art and Architecture' taught by Dr. Sylvia Shorto, a British professor at AUB, and also my adviser. At the very beginning of the class we were introduced to her teaching assistant, Dominik Wierzbowski, whose last name she didn't attempt to say because it was too hard to pronounce lol. I really wish I had recorded her introductory 'speech' to us, or at least taken notes because the way she described the course, and the vast amount of knowledge we would gain from it, was beautiful. I will try to recall some of the things she said, and quote some parts from the course syllabus. She started off by introducing herself, and sharing with us the feelings she had on her first day of college. Feelings of fear, anxiety, uncertainty and doubt. She then told us more about our course, about the history of art, how it has evolved over time, the value of studying art, and the relationship between cultures and artifacts. 'We will look at contemporary contexts, relating these to myth, literature, and the development of new technologies', as stated in the course syllabus. Dr. Sylvia discussed how it's a shame that most of the artifacts we find are possessions of the rich and wealthy of the past, and not of the common folk, because the possessions of the latter were not preserved as well and disintegrated much faster due to the poor quality of the materials they were made of. After that, Dr. Sylvia showed us slides of different pieces of art and artifacts. The first slide was a painting by Rene Magritte called ' The Treachery of Images' and which combines both imagery and text, with the image being of a pipe and underneath it an inscription reading 'C'est ne pas une pipe'. The inscription refers to the fact that what you see is a painting of a pipe and not an actual pipe in itself.

The Treachery of Images

The second slide said the following: 'What is Art' and underneath it the question 'Is art an imitation of Nature?' We were asked to suggest different things that Art is. The list was: Imitation, Expression, Projection onto nature, a way to tell stories (narrative), and glorification or propoganda. Dr. Sylvia also discussed how nowadays Art does not have to be created and made. In our virtual world, Art can just be created, and not necessarily physically made or tangible. The next few slides were paintings and sculptures of faces, which we studied and analyzed, discussing the link between the art and the culture it was part of. There was also a slide of Lebanese artifacts from the National Museum in Lebanon, and the course ended with slides of nude art. How lucky we were to end our first class and start the morning with images of penises =P lool.

After my History of Art class, I had a break for an hour and 40 minutes. Lynn needed to sort out the time conflict between her English class and Basic Design course so I offered to let her use my laptop back in the dorms. Once we got there, I immediately started unpacking the boxes and trolley case I had brought with me the day before. Meanwhile, Lynn tried looking for English 204 classes that weren't full, but with no luck. She also tried English 203, Psychology classes, and Archaeology but they were either full, or during one of her classes. So she decided to go talk to Dr. Sylvia Shorto with the other Architecture students who were having the same problem with English. I continued tidying up my stuff until it was almost 11, and then made my way back for my second class: Technical Drawings by George Arbid.

When we got to the lecture room, our teacher had still not arrived, but there were some older students hanging up drawings on wall. While entering the class, I bumped into Richard Pelgrim, a Dutch guy I knew from a Christian Youth Group I used to attend two years ago, and was surprised to find out that he was going to be studying Architecture as well. The papers progressed from things we'd do at the beginning of the semester to what we'd be able to do by Finals. They looked like printed pieces of paper, however I later found out that they were all done by hand. Truly amazing. Mr. George had to leave for a meeting during our class, so his teaching assistant, who also happens to be a fresh graduate of AUB, took over. Another 4th year student also helped out and told us something that was both funny (because of the way she said it) and quite scary. She said: 'You will spend hours and hours and hours and hours drawing for your final exam'. Eeek >.<! We then went through the course syllabus with Rola, which included the Course Objectives, Learning Outcomes, Material, Course Content, Grading, Course Rules, and the long and extensive list of Tools and Equipment we would need for the course. My Course Content is as follows:

A- Drafting tools
1. Lead Drawing (free hand drawing and hatching with lead)

G-Exam.

After we had gone through the syllabus, we were asked to do our very first assignment in class (Lead Drawing (free hand drawing and hatching with lead)). We were asked to take 5 sheets of A4 paper and on each draw a freehand drawing with a hole in the middle and hatch it with lead.

Hatching and cross-hatching are artistic techniques used to create tonal or shading effects by drawing (or painting or scribing) closely spaced parallel lines.

We were also asked to draw a grid on each page with 1 cm spaced horizontal lines and 0.5 cm spaced vertical lines. The assignment wasn't that easy, especially the fact that we weren't able to use a ruler, but Rola told us not to worry about it too much and do our best. I even had fun making my last four drawings an L, a smiley face, a heart and an eye. Lol. As for the course, it doesn't seem too hard, but it is demanding and intensive. However, the demands are simple and to the point. Technical drawing is after all the language we will be using as architects =).

I didn't have much of a break between my Technical Drawings course and Basic Design Course, and therefore couldn't have lunch, so Lynn and I went to check out the vending machine downstairs in the basement. However, neither of us had any 500 coins and the machine didn't accept any new 1000 L.L bills (it kept spitting them out) so we gave up, and Lynn handed me a small Hello Panda packet of creamy chocolate filled cookie panda faces =D. We headed upstairs and entered the lecture room where our 7 instructors were standing. Once we had all settled down, they each introduced theirself. The first person to introduce himself was Joel Jon Condon, an American with a quite an impressive background, and also a new professor at AUB. Here is a part of his CV that I found through googling:

Condon, Joel Jon
Administrator, GMA Architects, Moraga, CA
Lecturing and Research: Architecture at the Frontier
Yerevan State University of Architecture and Construction, Yerevan, Armenia
September 2004 - June 2005

The remainder of the professors introduced themselves briefly apart for Mrs. Rana Haddad who is an architect who graduated from the Architecture Association School of Architecture, London (where I hope to go someday ^^ ), and she also co-founded the 'atelier de recherche' together with her partner Pierre Hage-Boutros at ALBA. One of our professors, Walid Sadek, left at the beginning of the course, which was funny because whenever Lynn tries to call him or look for him (he's her advisor), he's not there and she doesn't know how he looks like. Another professor Abir Khoury had an emergency, which is something I've heard a lot since I came to AUB (about emergencies :P). Once the personal introductions were over, Mrs. Rana Haddad introduced the course to us and went over the syllabus with us.

Basic Design is an introductory studio course that provides an initial practical involvement in issues pertaining to design and architecture . The student is introduced and called upon to engage in thinking through applied practices about various questions concerning pictorial space, urban space, representation, physical gesture, objects and structures of organization. The course syllabus comprises 6 projects which aim at assisting students in gaining a first access to the extensive field of design and architecture.

Our course is divided into 6 projects. Each project is assessed and graded by three instructors. The Basic Design course is the only course Architecture students, Graphic Design students, and Landscape students have in common. We will be split into groups and work with a different instructor on every project. Before heading down to the studio in the basement to reserve our special slanted tables, stools and lockers, we were given an assignment due on Tuesday (ya3ne tomorrow :P) and it was to bring the following materials to class:
- Two objects of your choice
-10 sheets of white paper measuring 42 x 42 cm
-1 black and thick felt-tip pen. (marker pen)

I still haven't decided which two objects I'm going to take, but I've decided that they'll be basic, simple objects as to not complicate things hehe. I'll pick them out soon, but if you have any suggestions, please feel free to share them =D. After we had received the brief about our assignment, we all rushed downstairs to reserve our lockers (yes, rushed, because first come first serve :P. Lynn and I work in separate, yet connected studios, so we choose a locker in the corridor that is between both studios. Mrs. Rana told us 2-3 to a locker, so Lynn, me, and a friend of hers (that they call Shali..I forgot what her real name is =/) share one ^^. We were supposed to stick a paper of our names on it, but we didn't have any tape..and that's where Shali's gum came in handy :P (yes I knew eww haha). I then had to go stand near the door of the Architecture studio where a large crowd had already formed. Being small as I am, I easily made it towards the front of the crowd (A). Through the window of the door, I could stairs leading to a relatively low balcony type room jutting out over the studio floor, which was much more organized and had much less tables than the studio room. I decided that I would take a table there. When Mrs. Rana opened the door, everyone rushed in again, and I quickly made my way up the stairs and reserved both a table and a stool, while collecting any scrap pieces of masking tape I could find so that I could stick my name to both of them.

Once that was done and over with, I went and found Lynn so that we could go have lunch together. Btw, one really cool thing I found out is that Lynn happens to know Altaf and several of my classmates from a business competiton called Injaz that our IB Business class was a part of in IB1. They all met in Jordan for the finals =D. Once we got to Maingate, we saw Leila, Mahmoud and Tala standing together. I said hi to them all, and Tala decided to tag along with us to lunch since she was waiting for her mom to pick her up. Lynn had told me about a really good Japanese restaurant called Japanese, Please! on Bliss Street that I had never noticed before, so we went and ate there. It was a shop down from Zaatar w Zeit which is prob why I never noticed it since Zaatar & Zeit was the farthest I had ever gone on Bliss Street. It's a casual sushi bar 'serving the best sushi since 2001' (not an understatement) and it also has Japanese dishes. I decided to go for a dish, since I had just had sushi the night before at Scoozi, but we ordered a plate of 4 Crispy Crazy sushi just to have a taste. As for the dish, I had a Teriyaki Chicken plate with fried rice (mmmm) and Lynn had the same. I also had fresh orange juice (=D). The service was good, our dishes arrived in around 15-20 minutes, and the food was delicious..I can actually say that it's the best Japanese food I've ever tasted, and the sushi was very very yummy =D. Moreover, the portions were very well sized and the prices are quite cheap for Japanese food. Thumbs up!

[caption id="attachment_271" align="aligncenter" width="243" caption="Japanese, Please!"][/caption]

Once we had finished, Tala had to leave, so we said goodbye to her, paid for our food and made our way to Aldo so I could get some flats. Once we got there, the ones I wanted were two small so I after much contemplation and choosing/trying on several pairs, I decided on these (be sure to let me know what you think!):

[caption id="attachment_275" align="aligncenter" width="270" caption="My New Red Flats ^^"][/caption]

After paying for my shoes, Lynn and I walked back to dorms, stopping at the Hallmark gift shop to have a look see, and at a deken for gum and water. Back in the dorms, we chilled with Leyla, and chatted together. After Lynn had left, Leyla and I decided that after a while we'd go get the proxy on her Internet Explorer fixed and I'd ask about the download/upload and webcam problems I had been having. Once her laptop had charged sufficiently, we made out way to the CNS, to find out it had closed just an hour ago, as were all the other Internet service stations except for the one in the Jewett library. We quickly made our way there, and also bumped into Leyla's brother (who's a doctor at ASH), sitting on the Library stairs with some of his friends. Inside, we found out that the internet service stays open 10 which was a pleasant surprise. Leyla got her internet and msn fixed, whereas I was able to both upload and download in the Library, probably because the wireless is stronger there than it is in dorms. The Internet technician also asked me where I got my braces done, which was quite funny, since it was so random, but also get that question a lot. Leyla and I then went back to dorms where we sat on the internet and listened to music.

Leyla had made plans to go with the guys (Mahmoud, Johnny, and Ibrahim) for dinner/movie/downtown so she called them up and they decided to go to Chili's and then for a movie at ABC Achrafieh. I didn't want to be left alone at dorms, so I decided to tag along. We had made plans during the week to go to FB Pub, however Johnny was underdressed, so we decided we'd go this Friday instead. Mahmoud, Ibrahim, Leyla and I met up at Chili's around 8ish and ordered a bunch of appetizers for our dinner. Mahmoud also had the Country Fried Chicken, and Leyla and I had cocktails..I a Strawberry Daquiri and I forgot what Leyla ordered but I didn't find it yummy :P. Mine was a little on the sour side, but it was good ^^. As for appetizers we had Bottomless Tostada Chips, Shangai chicken wings, and Fahita Nachos, which were all pretty good though I have a certain weakness for the Shangai sauce. We had to wait quite a while for Mahmoud's dinner, around 45 minutes, which was quite annoying, but he divided it amongst us all so that he'd finish quicker. Meanwhile, I wasn't feeling so good because of heartburn, but Jad had given me some tips before to ease the pain and I quickly felt better =). After we paid, I took a picture with the cow outside, and then we walked to ABC Achrafieh.

[caption id="attachment_276" align="aligncenter" width="270" caption="Strawberry Daquiri"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_277" align="aligncenter" width="270" caption="Chili's Cow and Me"][/caption]

On the way we saw something really weird, all the lampposts one one street were bent over, probably because they were going to be replaced by newer ones, but it was still an unusual site. Lol. The walk to ABC Achrafieh was longer than I thought, and I don't think I'd know how to do it again alone, but we got there soon enough. We met Johnny at the fountain, went up to cinema, and proceeded to choose between a vampire movie called 30 Days of Nights and Death Race. Leyla and Ibrahim insisted that 30 Days of Nights was horrible (according to reviews) so we decided on Death Race. We waited around half and hour, and meanwhile I bumped into Remi, who I seem to be bumping into a lot these days lol. Death Race was around an hour and 45 minutes long, and I loved every minute of it, because it was really one of the coolest movies I have ever watched. I would so watch it again, especially because I missed the ending and a small part during the film. The only negative thing I could say about the movie is that it gets a little predictable towards the end. The reason we missed the ending was because Leyla's brother was waiting for us downstairs to take us back to dorms and we risked missing our curfew, which is not a good thing :P We arrived at the dorms at around 1, 30 minutes before curfew. At the gate, we were asked to write down our names, id number, and the time we got back. This freaked us both out for a bit, and we didn't calm down until the guard had assured us that we were not in trouble :P. We made ur way up to dorms, laughing the entire way about our fun and adventerous first day (second for Leyla) of uni. I decided to sleep over at Leyla's that night (since both of us were roomate-less) and after web surfing, chatting, laughing and listening to music for a while, we both turned in, extremely pooped from our very long day.

The End =D

When thinking about IT recovery, most people start by looking at their backup tape protection. Wit

When thinking about IT recovery, most people start by looking at their backup tape protection. With modern real-time data replication solutions the RPO all but vanishes, but so does an oft forgotten failsafe - point in time recovery.

With real-time replication, a corruption to a file in your live site, will also be copied to your standby site. Failover in this scenario gets you nowhere, and all of a sudden last nights backup tape looks worth it's weight in silicon.

There are additional safeguards you should consider when looking at replicated solutions. Those that are based on transactional recovery points (like SQL Log Shipping) allow you to 'playback' the days activities upto the point of the corruption, but this takes skill to manage, and can dramatically extend your RTO.

Other solutions take advantage of snapshot technology at the failover site. By taking a point in time snapshot (think of it like a disk backup), at regular intervals, you can choose when failing over whether to fail to your latest RPO, or a point in time earlier. With data corruptions, this ability can be a lifesaver, and depending on the replication technology you choose, it need not be complex.

Double-Take replication adds the selection of snapshot to the failover management tool, conbining both solutions into one interface. This enables simple point in time recovery for those hard to fathom data corruptions.

I wrote this sonnet and I thought it is perfect poem for Laarnie and Jed.
I'm an Ilonggo, and I have some few personal encounters with Jed when he was just struggling as a singer in Iloilo as the lead singer of "Dye Vest Band," they used to be very popular in western visayas. Jed used to visit the stores I manage - Penshoppe and Oxygen in Roxas City and Iloilo and I had some brief chat with him as a customer in my stores(I doubt he even remember), but in those brief encounters with him, I can attest he is a good person with a beautiful heart which in my opinion is a perfect match for our princess, Laarnie.

Other than Ronnie Liang, Jed is on the top of my list among the established stars that would make a perfect loveteam for our star - I thought he would compliment Laarnie's gift with their great voices and our princess would be in good hands with this certified good hearted star. I don't necessarily expect, and-they-live-happily-ever-after kind of thing, what I'm saying is the match would surely make good and strong impact. If they take their relationship to the next level, it's really up to them - who are we to teach their hearts?

I look forward to see and hear them sing love songs together. I hope ASAP would put them in a segment where they would sing duets every sunday.

We are now having a short break from 29th Sept to 5th October. Logic and Thinking's assignment requires us to produce one project on any of the 'fallacies'. We decided on the fallacy of 'Strawman' and named our group name 'Strawman'. Our group consist of residents from two separate district, Brunei-Muara and Kuala Belait so the 'bandar' group is forced to go 'kb'.

// Strawman project in the making. Will post a complete one when it's done.

// Some of the kb friends. (Rachel Kuan, Debbie, Rachel Chiam, Kaiping and Aaron Leong (not in pic) is part of 'strawman'). I never got thier permission to upload thier picture so i'm reducing the size.
p.s: Tell me if you want it removed. =]

SATA: I took quite a number of pictures these days. This include Miri day, Badminton and Empire with Xinwen and friends. Will select and upload some presentable (or artistic) one up. Selamat Hari Raya to all Muslim friends.
