Siamo sempre stati buoni amici, abitavamo vicini. Quanti pomeriggi abbiamo passato insieme a giocare da piccoli. Non ho mai avuto il coraggio di dirle che mi piaceva davvero, lei sembrava non accorgersene. Abbiamo speso insieme praticamente tutti i tre anni delle scuole medie, e anche buona parte delle superiori.
Lei in quel periodo aveva un ragazzo, uno di quelli che alla fine danno la convinzione alle donne che tutti gli uomini sono dei bastardi. Più volte le ha spezzato il cuore, l'ha tradita, l'ha ignorata. Usata come uno straccio. E io sempre lì a consolarla, quante notti passate al telefono ascoltandola in lacrime, quanti pomeriggi a discutere dei sentimenti suoi e della bastardaggine di lui.

Ma, sempre puntualmente, lei tornava da lui. Lei era fedele ed affezionata. Era una cosa che non potevo sopportare, vederla sempre andare e prendersi puntualmente tutte le delusioni.
Ma ero troppo impaurito, timido e bloccato per parlarle sul serio, farle aprire gli occhi, confessarmi. Il mio desiderio non si è mai spento in tutti quegli anni.

E alla fine arrivammo al termine delle superiori. Io dovevo scegliere il mio indirizzo di studi, lei aveva già scelto. E aveva scelto lo stesso ateneo dove lui aveva in progetto di laurearsi. Per stargli vicino, diceva.
Al termine dell'estate, poco prima che tutti noi ex compagni di classe delle superiori partissimo per l'università, tutti in posti diversi, decidemmo di dare una piccola festicciola d'addio. Lei si offrì di ospitare a casa sua questa piccola rimpatriata, dato che i suoi genitori erano in vacanza. La serata passò anche troppo in fretta, mi ero offerto di rimanere per ripulire il discreto casino che era rimasto.

Ma in effetti avevo un regalo per lei, una collanina d'argento che mi era costata i miei ultimi risparmi. Avevo deciso che mi sarei dichiarato, che le avrei parlato.
Dopo aver tentato (invano) di ridurre l'entropia del posto le porsi il pacchetto. Lei era sorpresa, lo aprì. I suoi occhi scintillavano alla vista del regalo.

"Me la allacceresti al collo?" mi chiese. Io ubbidii, logicamente. Appena finito lei si girò di scatto. Il suo volto perfetto era così vicino al mio, gli occhi neglio occhi, le mie mani erano rimaste sullesue spalle. "Io ho sempre saputo che tu mi volevi bene" mi disse. Il suo volto si stava avvicinando sempre più. Sempre più pericolosamente. Mi ritirai di scatto. "Non posso" dissi. Lei mi guardò per un momento, poi vidi che stavano sorgendo delle lacrime nei suoi occhi. "Perchè?" mi chiese. "Perchè... perchè...

I am searching for an online teacher's edition for the Holt Elements of Literature books, but so far I have not been very successful.  I did find some free teacher resources from Holt, however.

Michael Clayton ha avuto una buona serata nel suo complesso, ma ha lasciato cadere dalle mani una palla impeccabilmente lanciata da Luke McCown. Nemmeno un handoff sarebbe stato più semplice da afferrare.

Sul primo sack subito da Simms, Jerramy Stevens si è completamente dimenticato del blitz all'esterno del linebacker avversario. Sarebbe bastta anche una semplice spallata per tenerlo lontano dal QB. Stevens può essere un buon bersaglio in end-zone, ma errori come questo sono gravissimi e probabilmente non valgono un paio di buone mani in più.

Nel secondo quarto Eugene Wilson è stato completamente aggirato su un lancio di media profondità. Altre volte ha fatto bene, ma quell'azione rimane impressa perchè è sembrato veramente spaesato e confuso.

Credo che Michael Bennett debba essere usato più spesso che l'anno passato: è un giocatore che ad ogni azione ha i mezzi per ottenere un guadagno importante. Quando ha corso lungo la sideline, ha evitato perfettamente il placcaggio distendendo il braccio; inoltre non è solamente veloce: ha anche una eccellente potenza, e non ha timore di buttarsi nel mezzo.

Brian Griese non ha commesso particolari errori, ma ha dato l'impressione di volersi liberare troppo affrettatamente della palla. McCown ha lanciato alcune bombe a lunga distanza, ma ha mancato un Clayton liberissimo in end zone. Dietro di loro, Chris Simms non ha commesso errori. La battaglia è ancora aperta...

Le statistiche dicono che la difesa ha giocato bene, lasciando i Dolphins al di sotto delle 200 yards totali. Però a volte il gioco alla mano di Miami è sembrtato penetrare con troppa facilità, e anche la linea titolare è sembrata a volte demotivata, lasciando troppa libertà a Ricky Williams.

La seconda linea difensiva è sembrata decisamente migliore, con Jimmy Wilkerson che ha colpito un paio di avversari come un toro: sembrava un probabile candidato per il taglio, ma un altro paio di prestazioni come quella di Miami basterebbero per far cambiare idea.

Dre Moore ha combinato poco e non ha messo alcuna pressione agli avversari. Forse la sua condizione non è ottimale, ma con il talento che è disponibile nella DL, sarebbe un azzardo lasciare uno spot a lui. Se non migliora rapidamente, sembra destinato alla practice squad.

Josh Johnson ha lanciato un passaggio perfetto. Purtroppo, su uno solo tentativo.

Spero che Chad Lucas trovi un posto nel roster: non si accontenta mai, e anche in questo esordio in preseason ha compiuto due eccellenti ricezioni.

Buone notizie per i ritorni: quest'anno tra Clifton Smith, Dexter Jackson e Micheal Spurlock non dovrebbero esserci problemi.

I Bucs hanno chiuso la partita con zero penalità. Spero che conti qualcosa.

In conclusione una buona gara, ma qualche preoccupazione resta. I Dolphins sono reduci da un modesto 1-15, e avrebbero dovuto essere un avversario più semplice. La linea d'attacco dovrebbe spingere meglio e aprire buchi più agevoli per le corse centrali, mentre la difesa deve creare più turnover. E ora arrivano i Patriots...

Ottimo esordio per i Bucs nella preseason 2008.

Michael Bennett ha corso per 74 yards e un TD, aggiungendo quattro ricezioni per ulteriori 16 yards. Luke McCown è stato schierato come primo QB, collezionando un buon 9 su 15 per 70 yards totali. Dal secondo quarto ha giocato Brian Griese, la cui prestazione (10-14, per 59 yards, tra le quali una splendida ricezione di 14 yards da parte di Stovall) è culminata con il TD pass da tre yards per Brian Clark proprio allo scadere del tempo: chiamata coraggiosa da parte di Gruden, che rinuncia a calciare un field goal con soli sei secondi sul cronometro. Touchdown che ha permesso ai Bucs di chiudere in testa per 7-3 la prima metà della gara, dopo aver subito un FG dalle 41 da parte di Dan Carpenter.

Chris Simms è stato schierato nel terzo quarto, chiudendo il primo drive con un 3 and out. Migliore il secondo tentativo: 10 giochi (con due ricezioni consecutive da parte di Chad Lucas) fino alle 25 di Miami. Purtroppo un sack di Rodrique Wright ha costretto Bryant a tentare un FG dalle 52, uscito abbastanza nettamente alla destra dei pali.

Successivamente la difesa di riserva dei Buccaneers si comporta ottimamente, concedendo solo un FG dalle 41, e il terzo quarto si chiude sul 7-6.

Simms ancora più preciso nel suo terzo drive della serata: 17 giochi per 76 yards, con un 4 su 4 per 40 yards al lancio. Due le key plays: una da 11 yards per il rookie Dexter Jackson, e soprattutto una bomba da 15 yards per Michael Spurlock che ha chiuso un difficile terzo e 13. Ma il vero protagonista è stato il RB Bennett, con una cavalcata da 31 yards lungo la sideline fermata solo a 2 yards dal TD. Touchdown che è arrivato poco dopo, ancora con una corsa dello stesso Bennett (14-6 a dieci minuti dalla fine). Simms chiuderà la gara con 8 completi su 10 tentativi per 60 yards, ma anche con due sack subiti.

Benissimo anche i rookie nell'ultimo drive, iniziato con un bel punt return da 30 yards da parte del RB Clifton Smith (5 portate per 15 yards per lui in questo drive). Ottimo il giovane QB Josh Johnson, che al suo esordio da professionista ha saputo convertire un terzo e 5 con un preciso lancio per il ricevitore Cortez Hankton. Matt Bryant chiude le segnature sul 17-6 con un FG dalle 32 (ma dopo averne sbagliati due in precedenza) quando mancano tre minuti alla fine: la vittoria è cosa fatta.

Let me begin by apologizing to those of you who have been waiting for the next update on this pastoral blog. As you can see, the month of July was a silent one. Two of us (Pastor Eric and myself) had new babies enter our lives, and you can imagine the activity that brings. It is our intention to post something every week, but perhaps we'll call this past month our "summer vacation" for the blog...

My wife Jessica and I have been blessed with a little boy, Isaac Stephen Smith. Among the many things we've learned since he was born on June 30, 2008 (such as how to function on very little sleep and always having an extra set of clothes for him when we're away from home!), I've been struck by how dependent he is on us for his every need. Sometimes it's frustrating for us as parents when it is obvious that he is uncomfortable or in need of something but unable to tell us. We may try everything possible, such as changing his diaper, feeding him, and adjusting his position, only to see that he is still unhappy and we are not sure how best to satisfy him. Thankfully, he is a fairly content baby and we usually are able to fix whatever is bothering him and enjoy the coos and pleasant facial expressions that show his contentment. However, during those times when he is fussy, we have been given a new sympathy for those parents whose babies cry continually or experience extreme colic.

As I reflect on the inability that Isaac has right now to communicate precisely what he needs (although we are starting to be able to distinguish his different types of crying), I am reminded of the wonderful truth that Paul records for us in Romans 8:26: "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." In verses 14-16, Paul has explained, "14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.  15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father.'  16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God..." We are God's children, adopted into the most intimate relationship that allows us to call Him our Father.

After these last few weeks with our firstborn child, I have a new appreciation for this relationship. I know the deep love I have for my own son and the earnest longing within me to do everything I can to care for his needs and show him my love. However, as I noted earlier, sometimes my inability to understand his cries result in frustration and slow response (i.e., after trying to soothe him by rocking him for a few minutes, I may finally realize that he has a dirty diaper that needs to be changed). The wonderful thing about the Christian's relationship to God the Father is, in contrast to my relationship with my son, God always knows exactly what is best for us and understands our minutest need. Thus, as Romans 8:26 asserts, even when we don't know how to pray, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, understanding our weaknesses and meeting us at the level of our deepest need in a way that only our Creator could.

Well, I'm sitting at my computer with the baby monitor beside me, listening right now for any cries from Isaac, who is sleeping in his crib. I've got a good idea that when he cries it will be because he's ready to get up and eat, and I've got a bottle waiting for him. How thankful I am that my heavenly Father is always listening for my voice as well. He knows me completely and understands exactly how to comfort and care for me. And He doesn't have the limitations that I have as a human father. I trust that each of you know the relationship that I'm talking about. If not, there's no better time than right now to turn to God and do whatever it takes to make sure that you are in a proper relationship with Him as His son or daughter. If you'd like to talk that over with any of us at CWMC we'd be happy to talk to you and pray with you.

And if you do know God as your Father and are enjoying your relationship with Him, remember that He doesn't just want to hear our cries when we're in trouble. Just as I find joy in Isaac's joyful noises (and I'm looking forward to when he starts laughing), God wants to hear our praises as well and to communicate with us about every area of our lives. If Isaac doesn't wake up right away, I think I'll spend the next few moments just talking to my heavenly Father and expressing my love to Him...

Non ci sono molte sorprese: tutto sommato a questo punto della preparazione ci si poteva aspettare Dan Buenning dietro a Jeremy Zuttah come centro di riserva, ma in ogni caso il posto nel roster per Zuttah è pressochè certo, quindi la posizione non sarà determinante.

Alex Smith non sarà il migliore TE in nessuna delle singole abilità per quel ruolo, ma sembra avere la migliore combinazione, al momento. Per ora Jerramy Stevens è il migliore a ricevere e John Gilmore il migliore nei bloccaggi. Quest'ultimo ha però anche delle buone mani, e non è improbabile che entro la fine del Training Camp il posto da titolare possa essere suo.

La posizione di Ike Hilliard davanti a Michael Clayton tra i flanker è basata solo sulle precedenti esperienze. Durante questo camp Clayton è stato praticamente inafferrabile, e se mantiene queste premesse non potrà non partire da titolare. Gruden ama il "cervello" di Hilliard, che è quasi come un coach sul campo. Ma Clayton stà disputando forse la miglior preparazione tra tutti i giocatori di qualsiasi ruolo.

Kevin Carter è davanti a Greg White, e lo sta meritando. Sta crescendo davvero forte.

Più incerta la situazione tra i DT. Dre Moore compare come backup nose tackle, ma sembra quasi che lo abbiano inserito nella prima posizione disponibile (probabilmente sarebbe una terza scelta tra i T). Jovan Hayes sta incontrando serie difficoltà a mantenere Ryan Sims dietro di lui tra i titolari: Sims sta dominando tra le linee.

Micheal Spurlock è sia punt returner che kickoff returner. Probabilmente non durerà, e Dexter Jackson finirà col prendersi il posto di punt returner titolare.

Il WR Joey Galloway continua a rimanere sulla sideline (dolore all'inguine) e non sembra che il suo ingresso in campo sia imminente. Lo staff medico sembra però certo che non avrà problemi per l'inizio della stagione.

Infine i quarterback. Luke McCown è indicato come primo backup di Jeff Garcia, ma non lo rimarrà a lungo se continuerà ad avere giornate come quella di ieri (in un precedente post avevo già parlato dei due fumble, ai quali vanno aggiunti due intercetti durante uno scrimmage 11 contro 11). In particolra e sorprende la difficoltà che sta avendo nel ricevere gli snap dal centro (Gruden l'ha definita "ridicola"): ogni mattina sta dedicando oltre dieci minuti a questo problema, che davvero non dovrebbe essere tale.
