The X Files: I Want To Believe finds Mulder and Scully a full 10 years since their last appearance in what could be one of the most ridiculous plots of all time. Instead of hunting aliens or solving government conspiracies as one might expect, they buddy up with a psychic child molester Catholic priest who wants to help bring a modern day Russian Dr. Frankenstein to justice while Scully tries to perform experimental brain surgery on a dying boy in her spare time. You may want to take a second and read that last sentence again and see if you’re as confused as I am.

Seriously…read it again.

Thanks to a recent AXXO DVD rip, I saw the first X-Files movie from 1998 a few weeks ago and loved it which only made “I Want To Believe” even more frustrating. One thing that sticks out in my head when trying to make sense of what went wrong between the two films is that perhaps what is considered to be frightening or exciting has changed dramatically during their 10 year hiatus. Taking into account the gore of recent films, the parts of this movie that may have been intended to be shocking didn’t produce much more than a blank stare from me. Furthermore, the absurd plot is reminiscent of a cheap horror movie if anything which I felt left the characters of Mulder and Scully completely out of place the entire time. The final kicker is that David Duchovny has done great work lately which made it even more disappointing.

If you want to download this mess of a movie the torrent is here, but I think I’ll just keep watching Californication instead.

david duchovny/gillian anderson/amanda peet/xzibit--dir. chris carter

In rest, eu il recomand, merita vazut!!!!...BONUS: Xzibit, intr-un rol in care nici chiar el nu cred ca se vedea vreodata, adica agent FBI :)))))) VIEW TRAILER

This disc has had a "Long Wait" for months now and it's preventing my trek through the world of Mulder and Scully. I am not happy about this. With Halloween around the bend, there is nothing I'd rather do than continue my quest to find the truth.

THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE....except it's probably sitting on someone's fucking coffee table or under their bed. Not being watched.

01. You can be wanted from a military court conviction and stay of the grid by hanging out at your girlfriends house who happens to be your ex-partner in the FBI.
02. Mulder wasn't exactly Miss popularity at the FBI himsel.
03. An out of work forensic pathologist can always make a few bucks as a neurosurgeon, after all it's not exactly brain surgery- except, oh yea it is.
04. In order to prepare themselves to perform an untried and experimental form of neurosurgery, all a doctor needs to do is google "stem cell research" and print off some medical papers from websites a few days before the scheduled operation.
05. Things end badly for buxom brunettes who try to come between mulder & his girl
06. Things end badly when you call Mulder, "Fox".
07. If you are looking for a suspect, randomly stop at a store, he will show up.
08. If you are looking for your partner, randomly drive down a road and look at post box addresses.
09. If you want to cover up serial amputations dispose of them in ice, no one will find them.
10. Pedophilac priests make good psychics.
11. Don't worry if your head is about to be chopped off, someone will be right there to save you even though continuity leads you to believe they are minutes away.
12. Search teams with FBI coats and poking sticks, line up and search a frozen lake for a missing person and not a snow bank because it makes a better camera shot.
13. If you push an FBI agent over a tiny cliff in his car which land in snow you make sure he is dead.. Unless he is the lead.
14. If you get stuck after 60 minutes of theories, start doing real police work as checking the place which sells animal tranquiliazer, and in 10 minutes its solved.
15. If the badguys truck breaks down blocking the road to the evil hideout it will magically disappear when people need to drive to the hideout.
16. A mad scientist who is determined to keep his bizarre and unethical transplant operations a secret will let a two-headed dog wander round in the open air to guard his property.
17. If you're an FBI agent and you are putting a psychic to the test by taking them to a perfectly innocent house and pretending it's a crime scene, it's not a good idea to just take them to the house across the road from the actual crime scene, which is visibly cordoned off with bright yellow police tape.
18. Sticking pencils in the ceiling is a habit hard to get rid of.

Hier ist also Nachsicht angebracht. Danke sehr!

Ach so, ja...

Cr: Michael Lavine/FOX"][/caption]

But that scene wasn't nearly as unexpected as seeing the creepy Nina Sharp among the suits Broyles is updating with the latest case and bios of his new team in the second episode of J.J. Abram's latest thriller.

We are only two weeks into this new series, but it's already clear that Nina isn't someone to be trusted. Last week the Chief Operating Officer of Massive Dynamics was almost threatening towards Olivia. The two met when Olivia was looking for the man who released the nasty toxin. That man turned out to be a former MD employee.

Anyone else wonder how Nina defines "former?"

Add the fact that the yet unseen founder of MD, William Bell, is Walter's former lab partner and you have to admit that Nina is pretty suspicious. So why on earth is Broyles briefing her?

All I could think of was the X-Files' Cigarette Smoking Man. He appeared to work with Mulder and Scully while secretly getting briefs on their work and himself working for the force that is behind much of the phenomenon the agents were investigating.

Sounds like Nina. But instead of chain smoking, she's got that creepy robotic arm. We've yet to see who she works for and she's suddenly very helpful to Olivia.

Interesting that Nina is so helpful when she was so verbal in that briefing that she didn't think that Olivia, Walter and Peter were the appropriate people for Broyles' new team.

Also, pretty fascinating that Massive Dynamics just happens to hold the patent on the experimental piece of equipment that Walter and Peter need to identify the killer in this week's mystery. Exactly what does Massive Dynamics do? And what are they using this equipment for?

And when Olivia returns the equipment, Nina tries to insert herself as a confidant, pumping Olivia for information about the case, even offering her a job. Now that's one way to get Olivia to stop pursuing the Pattern.

But Olivia saw through the ruse. And apparently Broyles isn't all that taken in by Nina either, offering Olivia a warning about the MD executive.

Still I'm left wondering who that committee was that Broyles is briefing and why Nina has a seat on it.

What do you think?

The premise: a problem

It has been said over and over again, as a defense or even as a backlash, by religious men and women that religion has a curative and comforting utility to humankind like no other. It has also been said over and over again by secularists and rationalists that however comforting some belief or idea is, it nevertheless adds nothing to the truth value of the belief or idea. That secularism offers nothing more than a skinny comfort blanket amidst the cold and pouring rain at best. That may well be true, and indeed it leads me to believe that it all boils down to what we really want: happiness or the truth. Happiness may not necessarily be true or what's really happening, and having the truth may not necessarily make one happy. This conflict reminds me of the doggedly proverbial "The truth hurts" and The X-Files' "The truth is out there". This conflict also reminds me of the struggle in the movie The Matrix, wherein to know the truth, one has to be 'removed' from the confines of the complacency brought about by the virtual reality of the machines who have taken over. Once one has learned the truth, which involves living as a fugitive or freedom fighter wearing mostly ragged clothing near the center of the Earth, one is left to wonder if it would have been better to have stayed in the fantasy reality, even though it's all make-believe. I guess it wouldn't be so surprising considering the fact that human beings, like almost every other animal, are predisposed to follow what is certain to help in the continuation of its species. After all, speaking in a geological time scale, homo sapiens are but cells that have just fertilized, and are beginning to undergo cell division to form a larger animal.

The question

So then, if you will humor my ponderings, what could secularism possibly offer as an answer to one of the most profound questions we humans have asked since the dawn of our consciousness: What is death or what happens when we die? Do we survive death in some form or is there nothing after it?

Setting the mood

Quite a mouthful of questions, and ones that have plagued thinkers or philosophers for centuries upon centuries. But I think before I even begin to give my answer to those questions, a little 'mood setter' is in need. Some questions are too frank or too blunt in manner, which sometimes has the effect on the listener or the questioner of making one lose focus on the more relevant and apparent details. The mood setting quote is from the book Unweaving The Rainbow by prof. Richard Dawkins. It's his reply to people who keep on ranting or complaining or fussing about their deaths. Everytime I read it, especially when I watched and heard prof. Dawkins read it with emotions in a talk at UC Berkeley, I cannot help but be moved by it's message, wrapped around in romantic scientific prose:

We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people
are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The
potential people who could have been here in my place but who will
in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of
Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than
Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set
of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set
of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I,
in our ordinariness, that are here.

And continuing this passage in his talk:

We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state, from which the vast majority have never stirred.

Makes one (or at least myself) wonder if we even have the right to feel anger or guilt or even sadness by our undeniable demise.

Physics on death

An episode of The X-Files has agent Mulder talking to agent Scully about starlight. He says that starlight as we see it here on Earth is already billions of years old, and has traveled unimaginable distances (light-years). Stars that are now long dead, but whose light is still traveling through time. Mulder continues that perhaps that's where souls (our souls, after we die) reside. Today, we know from physicists that the premise is correct (that starlight is very old and still keeps on traveling), but we can't be certain (or perhaps not at all) about the succeeding statement of Mulder (about souls). Scully, Mulder's partner, continues Mulder's statements by saying that the light doesn't die, and that maybe that's the only thing that never does. Speaking in a purely Einsteinian fashion when dealing with spirituality and such, perhaps our 'souls' do reside in starlight, and in that sense our 'souls' do continue on forever.

Mulder's statement

Taking the first statement into consideration, that 'souls' do reside in starlight, to be technical about it, we can probably say that it's actually not starlight in our case but 'planetlight'. We know that in order to see an object we have to shine light on it, after which the light bounces back, illuminating the object, back to our eyes. In the same sense, the Sun illuminates Earth at daytime, and at nighttime the Moon or our electrical/electronic devices light us up and our surroundings. In that sense light is shined on us, and so it is reflected back, which eventually reaches outer space and into the vast cosmos. In this way our 'souls' which in this case means our whole lifetime under some source of light, is 'framed' in a 'wave' of light cruising the universe. If there are intelligent lifeforms out there in the universe and they can't come here due to technological constraints (same as our case), once they try viewing our part of the universe, what they'll be seeing is planetlight (which is reflected starlight, the star being our Sun or light from some other source) containing us, our lifetimes, and our history. What they'll be seeing of course depends on many factors such as how far they are from us, how sensitive their viewing instruments are, what time they tried viewing us, among other things.

Scully's statement

As for Scully's statement, that starlight doesn't die, technically speaking that can be true, since as long as photons don't get smashed or absorbed, they keep on travelling in space, most likely till the edge of the universe and (our) time itself. However there is a limit to how long light can travel for one to be able to 'reconstruct' the data (in this case our 'souls') it carries with it. This is because as light travels, similar to a wave, it spreads across time and space. As the light spreads, at some point in the universe very distant from the light source, it will be nearly to absolutely impossible to know what information that light brought with it. In a word, the light will be too 'stretched' to make any sense out of it. This is similar to research being done on the Big bang. We are in an epoch of the universe where we can still study 'cosmic background radiation' (electromagnetic radiation, same as light) leading back to the Big bang. If we were a few millions of years late, we might not be able to analyze the data that comes along with the cosmic background radiation. And so Scully is partially correct since light can possibly not die, but the information in the light may become lost to us or someone viewing us.

Finally, physics on immortality

In essence, our 'souls', most of our memories, achievements, feats, and other things in our light-stricken lives continue to propagate into inter-stellar space. The propagation duration many orders of magnitude longer than any of our lifetimes combined, which could be treated as practically infinity, and in some ways, immortality.

It's the Vero Beach Power Squadron in action again. So there was an event. The photos are related to that evening. The Bridge (Commander, Bob McCurdy; Executive Officer William Heimbaugh; Educational Officer Dan Thomas; Admin Officer James Ward; Secretary Fran Desmone; and Treasurer Dottie Mancini) had the executive meeting prior to the general meeting.

There was a lot of information presented at the General Meeting, and those who attended got it all. All (The Bridge) presented at the appropriate time as called upon. Minutes were reviewed from the last meeting and each bridge officer called on his or her various sub committee team leads/agents to present additional data, as applicable. As usual it was a well-run affair and lots of data was disseminated. You had to be there to get it all but here is some of the information I recall.

1. Friday Night Social (FNS ) - James Ward said there are spots available for hosting FNS. He suggested members get together and double-team it. Sign up on the bulletin board to take the lead
2. Vessel Safety Checks -This is led by Jack Kruten and is progressing well. He is requesting more involvement from the members. I understand he needs more VSO, as the need will be greater in the upcoming months. Call Jack for details on how to get certified!
2. Membership - K. Thomas -We have a few new members and we want more. Current members are encouraged to invite friends and neighbors to FNS.
3. Coop Charting - H. Leh - It continues with the weekly lunches at Kelly's. Coop charting activity should be picking up in the next few weeks. There seems to be a hold up with data being submitted to NOAA.
4. Boat Cruise - There is one coming up soon. Lead on this action is Woody Boarman. A get together was held after the general meeting to discuss details as Woody was taking action to confirm reservations at the marina for vessels participating in the event.
5. Education - Howard Daniels -The next class is scheduled for October for the general Public
6. Education - There are sign up sheets on the board in the clubhouse for classes coming up for members. Other classes are being considered but will depend on the interest. The Seminar Series started this year is under review and could be offered in the next few months. The interest will dictate the schedule, so if you are interested contact Dan Thomas.
7. Boat Show - One is coming up. Glenn Rose will be coordinating and keep us posted.
8. Operations Training- Joe Leitz will be conducting a class in the near future. Sign up or get with Joe so he can schedule a time convenient for those interested.
9. Silent Auction - The VBPS plan to offer the Homeless Family Center (HFC) coupons for 2 for a Boaters Education Course. Consideration is being given to a day of fishing and a boat cruise. The auction is scheduled for November 17, 2008.
10. October Events - Shrimp Boil Dinner and Halloween Party.
There was more but that's all I can remember. The meeting was adjourned at the request of Jack Kruiten, and seconded by many.

Hum, looks like a sweeping grab at everything X-files. The opening credits were even an eye brow raising X-Files look alike. The mentions of conspiracies and the unknown. A main character that does not relate well to love. I could go on. I am not at all indicating it is bad these things are alike. That part of me missing the X-files soared like a phoenix seeing the similarities. I can love a show with a scene looking like this. Contrived maybe, but I liked it.

I've never watched Lost so I don't know anything about the creator of this show J.J. Abrams. Looking at his write up in IMDB, it look like he has done a bit, but again I have never seen anything he's done. He's seen the X-Files apparently. His creation seems different enough to work but alike enough to garner a huge fan base from the X-files fans. Clever man.

Episode 1. It fully had my attention the whole show, feat #1. Nothing made me grimace until Massive Dynamics entered the picture. Big bad corporation with more money and power than god, with an evil scientist owner. I sure hope it does not go that direction. Be original make the owner a good guy unable to control his corporation.

Anna Torv, whether because she is a good actor or had a good director was as low key as she needed to be. Time will tell, I am not familiar with her work. She played her part well here. Though I will forgo the orgasmic descriptive I know too well some watchers would have in describing her. We do love our blond of the week don't we?

Olivia Dunham is a really great name. Classy, graceful as the character was. The character had love driving her to be passionate this episode. I wonder what will drive her from there as intensely? I was a little put off she was so love with her collegue yet having definite connection moments with Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson), while her lover is dying a hideous death, usually feet away from them.

Peter Bishop was likeable, a bit high strung, but charming none the less. Even with the fact he'd break someone fingers to get what he wants. I am sucker for the intelligent character on TV, from Mulder and Scully to Frasier and Nils, Wiley E. Coyote. So I liked the father Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) and son combination right off. Walter will be a tricky character to play, Noble, to teetered a bit in the presentation, over all pulling it off. Maybe it was just editing of the scenes that gave me the impression.

The rest of the cast, the X-file's Walter Skinner like boss, Philip Broyles (Lance Reddick). Is he a bad guy or a good one? Hope that question does not go on forever, it was annoying never knowing and watching the contrived ways they tried to stay confusing about the Walter Skinner character on the X-Files.

Waiting in the wings to for their parts to grow where the colleague in arms Charlie Francis (Kirk Acevedo), the assistant Astrid Fransworth (Jasika Nicole ). Nina Sharp (Blair Brown) they need to work on. She is a cardboard cut out of I will do anything for my boss, even kill you. Her expressions of kindness to Dunham did not serve to help her character or make her intriguing.

The special effects were well done. Agent Scott's body succumbing to the unknown agent and turning into transparent, crystalline structure was fascinating to look at. Location titles look great, but they are distracting in their own way. So much is hinted at, that will be explored, it sounds interesting. I have a lot hope for the show. Beginning with the hope it does not let me down.

Vin Scully, the voice of Dodger Baseball since 1950 and a member of both the Radio and Baseball Hall of Fame, recently decided to return for his 60th season of calling the play by play for Dodger games. His current contract expires at the end of this season, and he got permission from his wife, Sandra. As he told MLB.com's Ken Gurnick,

"When you're on the road as much as we are, it's the loneliness of your wife that you consider," Scully, 80, said. "But she said, 'It's been such a part of my life for so long, you might as well do it if you want to do it.' And I still enjoy it. I still feel like I'm happy to be here, I still get goosebumps with an exciting play. So, I told Frank [McCourt, club chairman] that I'll try it for another year."

Among the highlights of his career include

Sandy Koufax's four no-hitters

Kirk Gibson's 1988 World Series home run

Don Larsen's Perfect Game in the 1956 World Series

Dodger World Championships in 1955, '59, '63, '65, '81 and '88

It hasn't all been highlights, and just this season Jeff Kent said Scully "talks to much" for his comments that Kent is getting better pitches to hit ahead of new Dodger Manny Rodriguez. I was really disappointed because I thought Kent had more class than that.

Scully will continue to call all Dodger home games as well as road games as far east as Colorado, and I'm glad we have at least one more season to enjoy his calls. Of course as a Dodger fan I hope we can give him one, or even two, more World Series to call. Even if the Dodgers don't win it all, just having Vin Scully call the games will make losses easier to take.

Thanks for sharing him with us one more time, Sandra. I'm sure the entire Dodgers team, including the people working in the front office and and folks who clean the stadium, will do all they can to make it worth your loss. No matter what Jeff Kent says about your husband.

I was in the dark apparently, i didn't know David Duchovny had it in him. After his familar paranormal conspiracy theorist Agent Moulder character from the x-files Duchovny has struck gold in his new series "Californication".

Ok, so its not so new but my roomate just bought the first season DVD of Californication and I've been watching it the last two nights. It is incredibly witty, hillarious and sometimes downright wrong! It's not only the parade of lovely naked chicks that Duchovny's character Hank Moody gets in the sack, it really is a smart and dynamic series.

David Duchovny plays self loathing, alcoholic novelist Hank Moody who can't getover his ex palyed by NATASCHA McELHONE. He is a rich bastard from his latest novel being given the hollywood treatment, which he obviously is disgustd with. He has a 12 yr old Daughter whch really adds s much needed humanity to Hank Moody. The ridiculousness of his escapades will keep you lol'ing long after you've watched the episode. Lik when he discovers a casual hook-up he met at the bookstore is actually the 16 yr old daughter of his ex-wifes new boyfriend. That plot-line leads to a whole lot of on-going trouble for Moody!

If your a fan of witty dirty humor and hollywood shows like HBO's Entourage you must buy the DVD and catch up on the first season before season 2 premiers.

One of the more familiar archetypes of Earth culture is the figure of the Elder, the gift-giver,

One of the more familiar archetypes of Earth culture is the figure of the Elder, the gift-giver, the bearer of ancient knowledge: the Wizened Old Man. A staple of culture since at least the days of Homer, the Wizened Old Man has helped along narratives by imparting warnings, dispensing information, and offering counsel during trying periods. This figure has taken various forms down through the years, has mutated in different ways, but the idea remains the same. One knows it when one sees it. Here is Running Downhill's take on the ten greatest Wizened Old Men of all time. [Editor's note: We here at RD realize that, yes, occasionally, this figure is female, but that's a different list for a different time. Also, we realize that this list is skewed a little towards modern culture, but that's just because we don't read much].

10. Gandalf the Grey / Gandalf the White (The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings) - The tall, imposing, ancient (thousands of years) old wizard called Gandalf first appears in Bilbo Baggins' neighborhood in J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. He arranges for Bilbo and thirteen dwarves to travel to Erebor to recover the Dwarves' treasure from the Dragon Smaug. Gandalf also holds a map and key that the companions require to complete their quest. Throughout the book, he comes and goes, dropping by to offer advice and assistance. Gandalf is fond of fireworks, being really really well-read, and mutton.

9. Sir Alec Guinness - Actor in at least 64 films between 1934 and 1996, made both in Hollywood and at Ealing Studios in England, Sr'Alec has all the requisite features of a Wizened Old Man: grey beard, resonant voice, knighthood, and a certain degree of crotchetyness. He also has the uncanny ability to change physical appearance, coming in many guises depending on the situation (e.g. Bridge on the River Kwai vs. Kind Hearts and Coronets). Also, and perhaps ironically, purported to hate his Wizened Old Man role in the Star Wars films, a trick which is surely just more elderly guile.

8. Mr. Miyagi (The Karate Kid Trilogy) - Mentor to Daniel-san, the Karate Kid, Mr. Miyagi cleverly disguises his wisdom under cover of being a lowly pool cleaner and general house servant. He sets Daniel-san on the path to California, and later world-wide, Karate glory, offering physical, mental, and spiritual training through use of metaphor and eating utensils.

7. Yoda (Empire Strikes Back, etc.) - Little green alien, bow-legged, mostly bald but with fuzzy hair, big floppy ears, and a cane, Yoda most closely resembles Ed Asner circa 2035. Obi-Wan Kenobi sends young Luke Skywalker to Yoda for aid in rediscovering the path to heroism after Luke petulantly blows up a moon-sized space station. Yoda offers all of the spiritual guidance and training that Obi-Wan could not (Obi-Wan, as it turns out, was too petulant himself, and probably just lazy). Yoda cleverly disguises himself as infirm, when in fact, as apparent in Attack of the Clones, he can flip around and fucking cut up motherfuckers better than just about anyone else in the Galaxy. Also, Yoda is a possible stroke victim, as demonstrated by his lack of proper syntax. Also hides behind alternate identity as the subject of an eponymous Weird Al Yankovic composition.

6. Vin Scully - Mr. Scully has been the broadcast voice of the Dodgers (both Brooklyn and L.A., motherfuckers!) since 1950. That's right: he's been broadcasting baseball since before humans could even communicate orally. He dispensed valuable knowledge and broadcast the 1955 Series, when the heroic Dodgers. led by Jackie Robinson and Johnny Podres, finally overcame the evil, foul Yankees. He provided the magical "stuff" necessary for Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale to totally frigging handcuff the potent Minnesota Twins in 1965. His generous gift of mystical analgesic honey cakes allowed Los Angeles all-time hero Kirk Gibson to hit a tater on essentially no working body parts in 1988. And HE'S STILL DISPENSING VALUABLE INFORMATION AND OTHER THINGS to this very day. It remains to be seen whether Mr. Scully's wisdom and caginess can overcome the Derek Lowe signing, although one probably wouldn't bet against it.

5. Q (James Bond books and films) - Q is the ultimate 20th-century supernatural aid-giver. After MI-6 successfully ID's the threat, James Bond seeks out Q's advice and gadgetry, receiving aid the forms of magnetic watches, inflatable rafts, Aston Martins with machine guns mounted front and rear, atomic-bomb pens, prophylactic devices, etc. Q is perhaps less Wizened than others on the list, but he fits the archetype fairly well.

4. Grandpa - He's always there with a story, a piece of friendly advice, and a song. He'll drive one to town early in the morning and buy one a donut (talk about a boon!). He'll show one how to bait a hook. How much more wisdom does one want?

3. Henry Fonda - Actor in 115 films, Henry Fonda was an Old Soul. Even at the age of 35 (The Grapes of Wrath), Fonda already hid wisdom behind ice-blue eyes (disguised cleverly by black and white cinematography). Always the prevailing voice of reason (e.g. Twelve Angry Men, The Ox-Bow Incident), Fonda is made all the more wise by his momentary loss of self-control in the face of unworldly gorgeousity (Claudia Cardinale). Even in this villainous moment, his wisdom is apparent, because who wouldn't go nuts around her?

2. Louis "Studs" Terkel - Holder of infinite Americo-historical knowledge, lover of baseball, and general man about town, Studs Terkel is a national goddam treasure. For one thing, he don't take no shit from nobody, no-how. For another thing, he realizes that nostalgia can sometimes be silly (hey, everybody, maybe America wasn't as together during World War II as we like to think!), and for yet another thing, he realizes that corporate culture and plain old-fashioned greed can siphon off the joy and rightness of human labor. Also, look at the picture, and one sees it, yes?

1. Lester Freamon (The Wire) - Simply the best murder police of all time. Lester sticks mostly to carving doll house furniture while chaos prevails all around him in the offices of a Baltimore Police special task force, Lester's game is dispensing timely advice, mentoring the young detectives, and then shutting the hell up and letting things play out. All of the traits of a Wizened Old Man are present in Lester in spades: unending experience, tons of knowledge, gruff exterior disguising a friendly heart, greying hair, beard, and bowleggedness. Clear bonus points as well for listening to the ORIGINAL Erma Franklin version of "Take Another Little Piece of My Heart" on his radio. Lester Freamon is as wise and helpful as any old man there ever was.

A research scientist, recently agitated by paranoid fears, is found dead in his suburban D.C. apartment. His sister refuses to accept the coroner's ruling that his death was suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Federal investigator Scully discovers forensic details that would seem to defy rational explanation and when her partner Agent Mulder learns the scientist was working on a top-secret project for a government contractor, Mulder becomes agitated by his own paranoid fears, which eerily parallels the behavior that led to the scientist's death!
