Earlier this year I got a chance to meet Chuck Hester when we presented together at the Bulldog Repo

Earlier this year I got a chance to meet Chuck Hester when we presented together at the Bulldog Reporter Media Relations 2008 Summit in San Francisco. Chuck's story is about using LinkedIn for power networking, and he's organized what he calls LinkedIn Live events to turn his local virtual network into a face-to-face networking opportunity.

I hope to see Chuck again this week at the Ragan Corporate Communications in a Web 2.0 World conference at the SAS headquarters in Cary, NC. I'm unfortunately going to be traveling during his presentation, but will plan to connect with him later in the conference.

Chuck is turning his experience with LinkedIn into a new book that will be released later this year. It's called Linking In to Pay it Forward: Changing the Value Proposition in Social Media. You can read about it on Chuck's Pay it Forward blog. So when Chuck asked me for the "Small Good" of giving his book a shout out, I was glad to help.

One of the things I appreciate about the social media world is the "pay it forward" philosophy. Much of what I'm doing with SMUG is experimenting publicly with different tools and techniques. Then, after I've worked out the kinks and gotten hands-on experience with the tools, I can confidently recommend the best ways to use them in my work environment. And I figure if I can help others by letting them learn from my experimentation, that's a worthwhile service.

But I can't experiment with everything; I personally haven't used LinkedIn nearly as much as Facebook. So if Chuck would like to write a guest post with some highlights from his new book, I'd be happy to confer Associate Professor status and make him a SMUG faculty member.

As I was saying in my last blog, I have 2 more memorable moments of the Jungle I would like to share

As I was saying in my last blog, I have 2 more memorable moments of the Jungle I would like to share with you....

4. SLEEPING IN A WET HAMMOCK

I shall never complain about sleeping rough again.... although comparing my Jungle bed experience to the rest of the locations we went to, my hammock was like a luxury bed made for a king!

We slept in these hammocks (like a body bag with a zip... you actually get inside the bag) , tied between 2 trees, with the basher (see previous blog) over the top to keep us supposedly "dry". You can't sleep on the Jungle floor... too many creepy crawlies wanting to share your space. When sleeping in the Jungle you have to have 2 sets of clothes... wet clothes and dry clothes. On the last night, I remember putting on my dry clothes ready for bed, head torch on, tick check complete, only to discover that my hammock was soaking wet!! It was so horrible to sleep in, and the rain just kept coming down. I would sleep in my hammock with it zipped right up to the top (how I could breathe I don't know) but I really wasn't prepared to share my bed with any sort of creature....

5. SNAKE BUT NO LADDERS...

After the Jungle experience was over, we had to walk back to the base camp which was an eco lodge located about 5-7k away. It must have been about 3 or 4pm as it was starting to get dark... in the Jungle it gets dark very quickly very early. We were walking back and I saw this massive snake stretched out over the floor, it had orange marks on it and it was huge. I was about to step over it (as you do!!) and it started to coil back into itself. They do this when they are scared and want to attack!! I was so tired, that the thought of stepping over it didn't even register!!

I think the snake was a Red Tail Boa.. not sure if they are deadly, but it was big enough!

This got me thinking that I really cannot understand why anyone would want to keep a snake as a pet?

Anyway... changing the subject slightly, did anyone see the the Asics tube run last week? Check it out below, it is absolutely amazing.

Asics did a "man versus machine" as part of their launch of their new shop in London.

I have never been able to understand why everyone in London is in such a rush, pushing past to get to their train, but then stand on the escalator?? If your in that much of a rush surely you should keep moving?

My point with the Youtube video above... just like my Jungle experience... It just goes to show that if you really put your mind to something... anything is possible...

No time like the present.... No more excuses.... No more 'but when I'......Get your trainers on and go....

I am going to do another blog over the weekend with my 'Top 10 Jungle Survival Tips', so keep checking back...

Bye for now x

Today I thought I’d write about the strong memories that clearly stick in my mind about the Ju

Today I thought I'd write about the strong memories that clearly stick in my mind about the Jungle..... some good, some bad and some ugly.

1. THE FLY-OVER THE JUNGLE

We took 4 flights to get to Guyana.. the first 3 being just getting to South America, and then the last flight, which was from Guyana to the Rain Forest. The plane was tiny....12 of us in the plane in total. I really like flying and find it really captivating looking down at the land below as we take off.

The Rain forest is like nothing else I have ever seen. It literally just goes on for miles and miles, exactly like the wildlife progrmmes!!... as far as the eye can see. It was at this point that reality struck me that I wasn't on some glorious holiday .. but that whatever was down there was going to be tough and mentally I was going to have to prepare for what ever was thrown at me.

2. THAT TORTOISE

Without going into too much detail, the tortoise that was killed and eaten in the Jungle was upsetting for me as I have a pet tortoise!! Her name is Billy and she has been around for ages!! She was originally washed up on the Thames river (so my mum tells me) and we were asked to keep her. This was a good 30 years ago... she has escaped twice... but is still going strong!! Anyway, I have apologised to Billy and we are back on talking terms.

3. TOILET 'NUMBER TWO'S'

Ok, again without going into too much detail.... going to the toilet was......well, nothing quite like I've ever experienced. We literally were going to the toilet on the floor, ok, the flora and fauna was beautiful, but you kind of don't notice it when there's a possibility of being bitten in your nether regions by a snake! Also, it's really difficult as a girl to squat on the floor.. blokes? They can just whip it out. Girls? Different kettle of fish... and trying not to wee on your clothes.. well, don't even get me started! However, compared to Norway, the Jungle floor was like a luxury en suite bathroom. Having a 'number 2' in the middle of the Rainforest, with your buddy standing close by (we always had to go to the toilet in two's- just like girls do normally, minus borrowing the lip gloss/sending drunken texts/or asking "where did you buy your top" to a random stranger - yes that is what girls do in the loo). Put it this way.. I know what to do if I'm caught short and there is no toilet paper.......

I'm having a good time reminising of my fond memories. However, I am tired and bed beckons so I shall fill you in tomorrow with with my last 2 memorable moments.

Bye for now x

The most excellent Strange Maps blog has just published an article about The Guardian's fondly remembered 1977 April Fool supplement on the island of San Serriffe.

(Well, I say fondly remembered, though I do not personally remember the, fondly or otherwise, seeing as I was only rising one at the time. Over the years I became aware of it, though, by way of the 1999 reboot of the spoof, and also in much the same osmotic way as I know about the Tomorrow's World piece on spaghetti trees.)

Talking of fake-stories-as-Grauniad-news, I am reminded of the (and correct me if I am wrong) 1976 piece the paper published in which a reporter related the story of his chance encounter with a member of the SAS on a train.

The journalist - a sceptic of the British military strategy in Northern Ireland - had recently been writing about the deployment of SAS troops to the province, and in none too complimentary terms. IIRC he suggested they were swaggering cowboys who offered little to the peaceful resolution of the Troubles.

And lo, by complete serendipity he happened to meet one such soldier (in civvies) on an InterCity, who, during the course of a spontaneously-struck up conversation, turned out to be articulate, erudite, and anything but macho. His opinions on British policy in Ulster shifted slightly, and he wrote up the story for the paper.

Then many years later it transpired that the whole 'chance encounter' had been a psyops fabrication; the journalist had been picked out as a possible target and a well-briefed and affable serviceman been placed on a train he was known to be travelling on in order to casually strike up a conversation with a view to modifying his opinions.

I've no idea whether that is a true story, as I can't remember where I read it. Perhaps I imagined it? But it sounds like it might be a Colin Wallace one. I know the original story exists, as I read it in one of those Guardian Yearbook thingummies which they used to publish.

Can anyone fill in the details? The source of this tale swimming round my rapidly-shrinking brain? The journalist it seems to be about? The year, even?

PROC FASTCLUS can be used to perform a k-means clustering for observations. All the observations in the training dataset are assigned to clusters on the basis of the parameterization of the procedure and of their variable values. Scoring the observations in the validation dataset using PROC FASTCLUS seems a little bit challenging because the cluster assignment rules depend on new observations now.

Scoring new observations without changing the cluster assignment rules can be achieved by using a SEED dataset in PROC FASTCLUS.

/*original clustering */

%let indsn = input;  *your input dataset;
%let nclus = maxclus; *number of clusters to request;
%let indvars = varlist; *independent variables to run proc fastclus on;
%let valid = val_data; *validation dataset to score;

proc fastclus data=&indsn maxclusters = &nclus outseed= clusterSeeds;
var &indvars;

/*scoring new observations using the seed dataset */
proc fastclus data=&valid  out=&valid._scored seed = clusterSeeds maxclusters = &nclus maxiter = 0;

2. Par défaut, supprimer tous les types de fichiers MEMTYPE=ALL : En effet, l'option MEMTYPE est par défaut égale à tout (MEMTYE=ALL). Cela comprend 3 types de fichiers :

data sets (MEMTYPE=DATA),

vues (MEMTYPE=VIEW) ou

catalogues (MEMTYPE=CATALOG),

proc datasets kill;
quit;

proc datasets lib=work
memtype=all
kill;
quit;

libname sasref 'C:/sasref/blog';

proc format lib=sasref;
value gender 1='Male'
2='Female';
value grp    1='Per Protocol (PP)'
2='Intent to Treat (ITT)'
3='Safety';
run;

proc copy in=sashelp out=sasref memtype=data;
run;

proc datasets lib=sasref
memtype=DATA;
delete class grp (memtype=catalog);
run;

NOTE: The file SASREF.GENDRE (MEMTYPE=CATALOG) was not found but appear on a DELETE statement.

I had the pleasure of participating in a panel at the prestigious Telephony Live conference hosted b

I had the pleasure of participating in a panel at the prestigious Telephony Live conference hosted by the editors of the Telephony magazine in Chicago last week. The conference titled "Telephony Live-The Telecom Summit 2008" was a great success and I thoroughly enjoyed the excellent event, the panel participation and hobnobbing with some distinguished luminaries of the telecom and wireless industry.

Kudos to Editor-in-Chief Carol Wilson, marketing chief Kim Brower, all the editors including Rich Karpinski, Kevin Fitchard, Sarah Reedy, Ed Gubbins and the entire cast of Telephony magazine for doing a stupendous job on what I believe is the second time for this conference. Congratulations Carol and team !! Great job and I look forward to more of these in the future.

First on the panel I participated in :

I was in the panel "Service Gets Personal" along with some other distinguished telecom execs - Nancy Kaplan from SECOR Consulting, Ken King from SAS and David Allred from SezMi, a stellar team of telecom experts from blue chip firms. The panel was moderated by the Chief Editor of Telephony magazine Carol Wilson.

Carol, Nancy, Ken and David - It was a pleasure and I appreciate the opportunity. I whole-heartedly enjoyed the spirited discussion and felt enriched by the keen insights offered.

The topic concerned the implications and importance of service personalization in telecom and mobile offerings. Pretty much all panel members agreed that with brutal competition in telecom industry and commoditization of the old bread and butter voice revenue, service personalization is all but inevitable.

Broadly, service personalization means taking customer demographics, customer's location, customer's permission, customer control etc into account while disbursing relevant services and / or rendering marketing messaging to the customer base. Service personalization allows providers to create new revenue streams, retain existing customers and keep their offerings differentiated and innovative in midst of what is a highly competitive and fast-moving communication services market. The various techniques used to achieve personalization include :

- location - to render location-sensitive mobile advertising, in-proximity marketing or media

- customer demographics from social networks or customer profiles

- customer opt-in permissioning ( as opposed to spamming )

- reviewing customer's past usage history or buying patterns such as used by telco operators to determine what new services should be offered

Interestingly iPhone, the new game-changing mobile phone has shown that mobile web can get 10 times the adoption with the right ecosystem and device support. This has created a race to capitalize on this new channel from all members in the ecosystem. Amid this application, device and media frenzy triggered by mobile web as on an iPhone, personalized services promise to get the customer's attention, thereby creating new revenue streams and brand new players like Apple, Google, Loopt, in the mobile ecosystem.

Business Intelligence firms like SAS are sitting on prime customer intelligence data which can be mined for detecting customer patterns and offering more personalized services. SezMi has a breakthrough internet TV product soon to be launched which promises to bring internet style control to the TV experience. Consulting firms like SECOR and CellStrat stand ready to help CIOs, CTOs and CMOs sort through the service jungle and create viable and compelling solution offerings.

Challenges to service personalization are many, eg privacy concerns including location and data privacy, risk of spam, regulatory hurdles (eg FCC penalizing Comcast on Deep Packet Inspection), device and technology fragmentation (too many devices and standards).

On Telephony Live Conference :

The conference had some great keynote speakers, viz Daniel Kelly (Exec VP, Tellabs), Hardik Bhatt (CIO, City of Chicago), Andrew Lippman (Fellow, MIT Media Lab), Jeong Kim (President of Bell Labs). All offered immense insight into the future of communications and the role of communications industry in modern society. Hardik Bhatt presented some interesting use cases from the way the City of Chicago is using communication services and technology to enhance the lives of city dwellers. Andrew Lippman offered some really insightful advice on how it is about "We, not Me" anymore. Essentially he sought to convey that one must always think of social aspect rather than individualistic service (I don't believe this conflicts with service personalization before as some might suggest, we are on two different planes here). Jeong Kim discussed innovation and its role in modern world and how innovation has a slightly different perspective in research and industry circles.

There were many other panel discussions with some excellent industry thought leaders and executives. All in all, a great and enriching experience for all and me in particular.

Carol and team - Awesome job. Look forward to other events like this from the Telephony team.

US mag GamePro reports:

"considerable gameplay improvements, the most significant of which sounds like "increased responsiveness" from passing, dribbling and the physical pushing and shoving that occurs in a game. Goalkeepers can reach behind their bodies if they misjudge a shot on goal.".

For those who read any details regarding Fifa before release, you'd no doubt have read that EA were making vast improvements to the Computer AI, especially goalies. At first this sounded very exciting - Who wouldn't want a more realistic version of Fifa? Everyone would.. Everyone but EA Sports that is.

You see, Fifa 09 is not realstic in regards to goalkeeping, and the claim that they are far more intelligent is an understatement. Fifa 09 goalies are more than just goalies, they are Cyborgs; they have IQ's higher than that of god and have been trained by the SAS in not only the art of war, but also the art of 'Bernard's Watch'. Yes, not only do they posses the power to be complete annoying cocks, but also to stop time. It's a bit like Neo off the Matrix; they have all the powers that Neo has (the most obvious: stopping time) as well as ones that Neo doesn't posses: the ability of having a dress sense. Now I'm not taking the piss out of Neo's attire, it's just that Goalkeepers who look like they are squatting on the toilet whilst having a shit in shorts look better than his gay leathery trousers and coat. I mean come on, what was he thinking? To me, Neo gives off the 'wrong vibes' and it doesn't exactly help with the theory of him 'being so far in the closet, he's practically in Narnia'.

I love you Fifa, I'm just not 'in love' with you.

Fluctuations embedded in a data series over time may come from random fluctuations or latent seasonality. Very often, we need to test if there's a true seasonality trend. If so, what seasonality pattern is it? The example in the following link provides a perfect illustration on how to examine the seasonality using SAS PROC GAM.

Library Name (libname)

Member Name (memname)

Member Type (memtype)

Dataset Label (memlabel)

Dataset Type (typemem)

Date Created (crdate)

Date Modified (modate)

Number of Observations (nobs)

Observation Length (obslen)

Number of Variables (nvar)

Password Protection (protected)

Compression Routing (compress)

Encryption (encrypt)

Number of Pages (npage)

Percent Compression (pcompress)

Reuse Space (reuse)

Bufsize (bufsize)

Deleted Observations (delobs)

Type of Indexes (indxtype)

Data Representation (datarep)

Requirements Vector (reqvector)

Library Name (libname)

Member Name (memname)

Member Type (memtype)

Column Name (name)

Column Type (type)

Column Length (length)

Column Position (npos)

Column Number in Table (varnum)

Column Label (label)

Column Format (format)

Column Informat (informat)

Column Index Twpe (idxusage)

proc sql;
select libname, memname
from dictionary.tables
where upcase(libname)='SASHELP' and
upcase(memtype)='DATA';
quit;

proc sql;
select name, varnum
from dictionary.columns
where upcase(libname)='SASHELP' and
upcase(memname)='CLASS' and
upcase(type)='CHAR';
quit;

: PROC SQL Statement).

options nolabel ls=255;

proc sql flow=10;
...
quit;

options label;

Victor Chandler, one of the world's leading betting and gaming companies, has implemented SAS(R) Marketing Automation software to improve its customer service and increase customer loyalty through a more personalised service, whilst remaining true to its values of responsibility, honesty and integrity.
SAS, the leader in business intelligence and analytics helps Victor Chandler identify and individually connect with new customers and retain existing ones. Using SAS, the company executes campaigns aimed at the individual, where highly targeted rewards are offered, based on the customer's individual preferences, reinforcing the company's brand promise of a more personalised service.
Company chairman Victor Chandler, a respected icon in the British bookmaking industry, states: "With over 90 percent of our business online and the sheer number of our customers, it can be difficult to develop and maintain personal relationships. It is therefore imperative that we are able to understand and connect with each and every customer and be able to serve them as best as we can. SAS gives us the intelligence to do just that."
SAS' complete marketing solution, which provides a more analytical approach to marketing initiatives, helps Victor Chandler understand customer behaviour, preferences and betting patterns. The SAS solution uses this intelligence to run automated and tailored marketing campaigns that enable Victor Chandler to improve its customer service to individual customers.
SAS also enables Victor Chandler to discover vital trends in its business performance. With the right information delivered to all levels of the business, the company continually monitors organisational performance to make faster and better fact-based decisions.
Ian Manocha, Managing Director at SAS UK adds: "The online gaming industry is increasingly competitive. It is vital that gaming companies remain responsible, efficient, and customer driven, whilst retaining a notoriously fickle customer-base. SAS enables Victor Chandler to truly understand how its customers interact with the company, leading to the most effective marketing possible."
SAS recently expanded its footprint in hospitality and entertainment in which gaming plays a core role, by acquiring IDeaS Revenue Optimisation and forming a new Profit Optimisation Global Practice. The practice is led by Steve Pinchuk, who brings with him years of experience in the gaming market. Formerly Corporate Vice President of Revenue Management and Distribution at Harrah's, Pinchuk worked to integrate Harrah's first revenue management systems and practices with their world-renowned customer relationship programmes.

These gowns, at SAS, designed by Sascha of course, easily belong at a gala or in a palace, at an important opening or even a State event. They gleam and flatter, but do so in a way that sets your face off as the diamond in a setting rather than distracting from it.

Very often we need to work from home through VPN. The speed is fairly OK when you work on sas datasets through server. However, if you tried to move some non-sas files, it's painfully slow. With PROC DOWNLOAD, you can use SAS as a ftp tool to move non-sas file much easier.

rsubmit;

filename source '/sourcefolder/myfile.pdf';
filename dest '/destinationfolder/myfile.pdf';

proc download infile=source outfile=dest binary; run;

endrsubmit;
signoff;

The BINARY option transfers files without any character translation (for example EBCDIC to ASCII) or insertion of record delimiters.

The simiar proc is PROC UPLOAD.

More information on this can be found from SAS site.

Use PROC SQL to merge large datasets - Nodupkey

Generally, we have two approaches to merge two datasets: merge statement in a data step and proc sql

Generally, we have two approaches to merge two datasets: merge statement in a data step and proc sql. Recently, I realized the advantages of using proc sql to merge large datasets.

Merge statement in a data step approach is simple, but it requires you to sort the data first. For a large data set, it may be very time consuming. For example, I have a data set with 33mm records. It took me almost one hour to only sort the data on the server. Using PROC SQL, it only took 25 minutes to finish the whole merge process.

In this post, I am going to summarize the PROC SQL way to achieve the nodupkey option in data step.

proc sql;
create table comb as
select distinct a.*, b.id
from one a right join two b
on a.id= b.id
quit;

If you try above code, you won't get distinct match from dataset a as you use the nodupkey in the data step. The reason is that distinct option in proc sql is not the same as nodupkey but as nodup. In order to get the same results as nodupkey, we need to use an unknown function "monotonic()". Here's how:

proc sql;
create table comb as
select a.*,  b.response, b.id, monotonic() as rowid
from one a right join two b
on a.id = b.id
group by b.id
having rowid=min(rowid);
quit;

What the above code does is to find all the matches from table a for each id in table b and then group them by id. Using function monotonic(), we create a field rowid and then take only the first record ("having rowid = min(rowid)"). This works great when you merge large datasets.

Rekommenderas! Nu väntar dusch och sängen. Hemma! Skönt.
