Ahimè, nessun ragazzo era all'altezza. It's fashion world!

Daddy got to spend the day with us today. It was fun to show daddy some of the things we do when he is working. We spent the morning at the library, enjoying story-time, some songs and dance, and playtime. Then we went to lunch at Mr. Gattis for "moms eat free Mondays". It was a great day!

The Quads and Logan

the GOOTH mission trip started today! as promised, here is the first entry in the blog. three of our middlers wrote entries, so i'll keep the intro short. it is 10:15. the lights just went out. we have an early morning tomorrow.

(from Sara Morris, 8th grader)

Hello! Today is the first day of our mission trip in NYC. We will soon be eating dinner and now we’re all just kinda lounging around, but we have had a really long-but fun day! This morning, we woke up really early, (or stayed up really late for some) and all arrived at the church really early around 2:00am. We left the church and started our journey, first going to the Greensboro train station. We were basically the only people in the train station so everywhere you looked you would see a GOOTH green t-shirt. Then we boarded the train. The train was a lot of fun. There was a lot of room and it was neat going through some of the big cities like D.C, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. It was a pretty long ride but we made the best of it. Then we went up and waited for Jay and our luggage at the amazing Penn Station. Jay quickly found us because us being in our bright green t-shirts, we were pretty easy to spot! We got our luggage, went up a few stairs and escalators and then were met with the hundreds of honking taxis and tall buildings of New York City! It was sooo exciting! We walked a few blocks and crossed a few busy streets then went to the subway station. We quickly got aboard and were much happier in the cool air conditioned cars. On my train a couple of New Yorkers asked about us and were really interested in what we doing. It was cool. After that, we walked a little bit more than went to board the Staten Island ferry. Today we have ridden all sorts of different things-cars, trains, subways, and now the ferry was just adding to the list but the ferry ride was really neat. We saw the Statue of Liberty up close which was cool. After we exited the ferry, and got through what seemed like a mob of people, we started towards the church. Through some of the Staten Island buildings you could see the church steeple. So the end was in sight! We didn’t know exactly how to get there, but we had a pretty good idea. My group decided that if we ended up in Manhattan, we knew we went the wrong way :) Then after a little walk we finally made it to the church. It is really nice here and I think we are all having fun after our first day.

(from Samantha Cooper, 8th grader)

Hey All!! Today was the first day of our mission trip we arrived got unpacked and we are settled in! The one thing I was worried about today was the subway. Everyone was making fun of me because they knew that the subway was no big deal and that I would be fine. But I did not know that; I thought that I was going to be left behind and no one would notice!! (Yeah right) turns out the subway are actually kind of fun. Because you are getting tossed around and you have to hold on or you are going on the ground! The other fun thing we had to do in order to get to Staten Island is we had to ride the ferry which went right past the Statue of Liberty; We were all excited about it!! I was afraid that Reva was going to drop her camera in the water but she did not!! Thank goodness!!All in all the first day was really fun and I am sure the rest of the week will rock our socks!!!

(from Tyler Hinshaw)

Hey everyone! Today has been great. We had such an early start this morning- we had to be at the church at 2 a.m. Once we got to the train station, we all sat around on the big wooden benches. One thing we could do during that time was work on a prayer shawl. Ms. Jean brought all the materials to make one that we could all work on together. The yarn is a very pretty mint-green. It was the closest to GOOTH green she could get. The train ride was a lot of fun, too. Most of us slept at first, but when we woke up, we moved around to talk to our friends. One thing I learned today was walking across a train is not the most pleasant thing in the world. It was very rickety, especially between cars. About halfway through the trip, our car became empty of everyone except for GOOTH. It was very nice because we could spread out and I got the two seats I had been sharing with Sarah to myself. When we got to New York City, we had to wait in the train station for the longest time, but after we got our luggage, we got to see the city! The city was AMAZING! There were people everywhere, but it was so exciting. We got to see the Empire State Building on the way to the subway. We had a bit of difficulty in the subway station because we had to get our luggage through the spinning things that you enter through. However, Jay came to the rescue and handed our stuff to us after we passed through. The subway was an experience that I enjoyed. Once we found where we were supposed to be, we had to hurry through the doors. There weren't that many people on the subway- not many of us had to stand in our car. We also got to ride the ferry, from which we could see the Statue of Liberty. It was so cool to see her from the water. We could see the line to go into her, and it was so long! When we arrived at Staten Island, we hiked up this long hill to get to the church. After unloading the car with the sleeping stuff, we had some free time (I took a nap). For dinner, we had New York-style pizza. We also got to decorate new GOOTH cups- red for middlers and blue for high schoolers. We had a safety talk where we discussed what to do it certain situations. Soon after we had devotions. We talked about the burning bush story and how we are being called to "Take off our shoes" this week. We also shared our highs and lows of the day. Bye- I'm off to bed. <3

more to come another day...

peace, love, and chocolate,

Karen was part of the big AS list and we chatted for many weekly meetings through the MSN AS group a few years back. We sort of lost touch when Karen moved a few years back. I think she remarried at this time too.

Karen's daughter Raina died this past week, a very sad accident that could happen to any of us with a moment's lapse in supervision. If you follow this link it will take you to the newspaper article about Raina.

I'm so sorry for her mother and sister (and the rest of the family too). That's one thing I will always remember, how much Karen talked about Samantha and Raina's love for each other.

I can't imagine what Karen is going through. It only took just a moment. How many times have I lost track of Maddie for "just for a moment"? But for the grace of G_d go I.

Joined Facebook last week. Fortunately, access to that is blocked at work. Good grief, that's addictive. I can't imagine getting any work done at all if I had 24 hour access to it. Found a couple of friends from high school. In some ways hs seems like it was just yesterday, and yet, it seems like it was a million years ago. Even though it was only 25. I remember when my dad had his 25th reunion. It was like the year before I started high school. I thought that was really, really old. Yep. And here I am, 25 years out of hs, with two little babies. Turns out, it is really, really old.

My laptop went kaplooey at the end of the week. It lost access to my files when it starts up. Everything's still there, it just can't locate my settings and documents when it boots. And it runs so sloooooooooooowly. Matt's got off Monday, so I'll have him take it somewhere for fixin'. I could live with having to manually find everything - except i can't get itunes to locate my tunes. And I have no intention of copying all my cds to the computer for a third time (long story, not worth going into).

Neighbors were shooting off fireworks last night. Just got the kids to sleep and the fireworks got them back up again. The 4th of July is rapidly becoming my least favorite holiday. And I think sniper permits should be issued once a year so you can sit in your bedroom window and pick off the yahoos making all the racket down below. Or at least go down and make THEM get the kids back to sleep.

So, Michele and Marci - remember when we were kids and used to fight in the car - She's crossing the line (the imaginarly line in the back seat upholstery that divided it into 3 (unequal) areas! Mom, she's touching me!!! I used to wonder where all that came from. Discovered this morning it's born into siblings. Jessie was getting into Sam's personal space, and Sam was just having a fit. Any time Jessie touched her or got too close, Sam would just scream and holler. At once point i was holding Sam and Jessie crawled into my lap -wasn't even touching Sam - but Sam started to scream anyway. Seems she didn't really want to share Mom at the moment. It's going to be a long 18 years if those kids don't start getting along a bit better. And Mom, I'm sorry for all the complaining I did as a kid. And yes, you got your wish. I got kids just like me.

Thanks a bunch.

Thursday I spent the afternoon helping the kids paint t-shirts for the Fourth of July. The kids had a blast. They all did a great job too. Friday evening we enjoyed a nice evening with my family over dinner, live music (thanks to my cousin Kayla and brother in law Stephen), and fireworks. Not only did we celebrate the 4th together we celebrated Stephens birthday.

Our home owners association threw a big Independence celebration today in the neighborhood. We spent the morning and lunch time back in our red white and blue. The kids (except Hudson who had to sit this one out) enjoyed jumping around in the bounce house, getting their faces painted, and having a picnic lunch. We even won a door prize. Whohoo!

Finalmente consegui juntar minhas gilfriends e fui ver Sex and the City.

…and yet every day it seems like the same thing.
Right now we’re having a heck of a litt

...and yet every day it seems like the same thing.

Right now we're having a heck of a little thunderstorm. I managed to get home before it started raining. Somehow that seems so much more important when you're walking or biking than it does when you're in the car.

I'm also making soup for supper. Sure, it's July. But the CSA chick had an excellent recipe for soup. Made it last week, improvising since the main ingredient wasn't available in what they had (garlic scapes). This week the had the scapes, so I'm making more soup. It was fabulous last week (substituted garlic garlic and mushrooms for the scapes), we'll see how it goes this week.

For some reason the kidlettes keep us so busy after work that some nights we don't even get supper. We've got to work on that. They're almost ready to start eating food with different textures (rather than the pureed veggies and fruits that are called Baby Food and sold in hideously expensive little jars). We'd like to mash up our food and feed them at the table (saves time and $$), but first we have to get an act together and eat better ourselves. We don't have time to do that b/c we're busy trying to feed them. Catch 22: if we'd eat better ourselves we could feed them our food and have more time to figure out a menu so we could eat better ourselves. Instead, most of the time we eat crap (pizza, fast food), and some nights by the time we have the time to eat, it's so late and we're so tired, we just go to bed without supper. (awwwww - can you hear the sound of tiny little itty bitty violins in the background?) Actually, since I could stand to lose a pound or 70, that's not such a bad thing, really. I just wish we could get ourselves better organized.

The garage door arrived yesterday. Hurray! Huge difference. Instead of taking half an hour each time to get the door back on the track (and curse until the paint on it melts), all you have to do is push a button and the door goes up. That came in handy today as I rode up on my bike just before it started raining.

I've been riding the bike for a couple of weeks. I just couldn't wait until the new door arrived to start, so I've been fighting the old door or sweet talking Matt into getting it in and out for me. Ted, the guy in the next cubicle (hi, Ted!!!) noticed that I've had 3 different helmets since I started. I got a couple of really cheap ones a couple of years ago and the one I'd been using broke at the neck strap, so I stole Matt's the last few days. He was sick most of last week and then all weekend, so he drove into work Monday and Tuesday (Tuesday to get the van out of the way for the garage door guy). Today he needed his back, so I took in the other cheap piece of junk one. I think it's about time to get myself a better one.

The kids are getting more teeth. Their little noses are running like crazy and they're pretty cranky. (Jennifer - I just need to say it's not always as insane here as it was the night you guys were over. It's mostly a teething thing) Hopefully that will pass soon, although there seem to be a lot of teeth that need to come in. They were ten months old yesterday. Unbelievable how fast time flies. I was looking at some of their first pictures last night before bed. They were soooooooo tiny. And they've gone from not being able to focus their eyes to having little individual senses of humor. Now, if we could just get Sam to sleep through the night......(I need a macro for that phrase, so I don't have to keep typing it!)

Hmmmm. It's almost time for Matt to get out of work. I hope it stops raining soon, or he's going to get hosed. It's also just about time to pick up the kids at daycare, so I should check on the simmering soup.

When push comes to shove

This video, which features Robin Williams as the off-the-wall Batty Koda, comes from the 1992 film "Ferngully: The Last Rainforest", and realistically (as well as comedically) depicts the trials and tribulations of wildlife during cosmetic testing.

The film was an ecological tale, that told the story of an Australian rainforest that is threatened by modern urban development. The film featured a number of musical sequences, and starred Christian Slater, Tim Curry, Samantha Mathis, Robin Williams, Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong, and Tone Loc.

Last week I went to a discussion in my town- organized by volunteers of Sen. Obama’s president

Last week I went to a discussion in my town- organized by volunteers of Sen. Obama's presidential campaign. The discussion was attended mostly by Obama supporters. The supporters all shared the view the there was a need for change in the government, which greatly inspired me. However, when analyzing Obama' record, I see no significant change in Obama's take on foreign policy compared to previous administrations.

So, when it was my turn to talk, I told the room filled with Obama supporters that I was concerned about his take on the U.S. foreign policy. The nexy day, one of the Obama's supporters emailed me, suggesting me to read up on Samantha Power, a former senior foreign policy adviser of Barack Obama. The supporter of Obama (who emailed me) described this lady as "woman who i've admired for her brilliance for years now." Consequently, I emailed her the following response:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I appreciate you for referring me to Samantha Power, a former foreign policy adviser to Barack Obama. Samantha Power, credits herself as a fierce critic of the U.S. foreign policy and advocates radical change.

However, there exists a fundamental problem with Power's works. She believes that the U.S. government has been apathetic to the crimes of others and instead should use military intervention to prevent ongoing and further genocides. Power, whether unknowingly or hypocritically chooses to ignore the vast genocides committed by the United States, and instead chooses to pay attention to those crimes committed in a few, select cases. Power, as an excellent critic never departs from the indoctrination of the modern intellectual culture- which is to ignore the crimes of the U.S. itself. The fact that the U.S. encouraged the genocide in Indonesia in 1965 (and helped kill 700,000 civilians) is missing from Power's works- which is simply amazing. In her major works' indexes, the topics of “genocide in Indonesia” and “Suharto” are entirely ignored. As an expert on genocides and international relations with the U.S., Power had gone to a great deal to hide the reality from her readers and focuses the attention to other relatively trivial matters.

I am perfectly sure that a hypothetical author in Stalinist-Soviet Union, who criticized Stalin for not doing enough to eliminate (kill and butcher) capitalists from Russia would have been hailed as an intellectual dissident in the mainstream.

Power criticizes the U.S. governments for not doing enough to prevent genocides (Kosovo, Darfur, Armenia, Kurds in Iraq). She is emphatically correct in all of these cases but chooses to entirely ignore cases of a much more magnitude. Perhaps the reason for her ignorance is that because the U.S. sponsored those crimes.

Powers doesn't mention the slaughter of millions of Vietnamese, a direct result of the American bullets, she doesn't mention the U.S. support for the death of 100,000 indigenous Mayans (see: Amnesty International). It is amusing to note that she does mention the Cambodian genocide in her works, but fails to mention the fact that the U.S. dropped five hundred thousand bombs in Cambodia, killing thousands, and leaving the country to shreads - which it remains today.

Power courageously and bravely (perhaps risking her life) stands up for the Kurds and fiercley attacks the Western world for not doing enough to help them. While she carefully attends to the crimes of Saddam, she mindfully forgets that U.S. had supplied arms, weapons (biological and chemical) to Iraq since 1983 until the late 1990s. The arms sales, approved by the U.S. governments, helped Saddam slaughter the Kurds - which she again skillfully forgets.

According to several United Nations humantiarian directors (Halliday, von Sponeck), the sanctions imposed on Iraq after the Gulf War by the U.S., not only "satisfie[d] the definition of a genocide" it was a "true human tragedy." Power, brilliantly chooses to ignore the death of 500,000 Iraqi children and a total of 1.2 million innocent Iraqis. As a critic of the U.S. foreign policy, it is quite interesting also to wonder why Power forgot to note the case of one of the most atrocious bombings in African history - the bombing of the Al-Shifa pharmaceutical factory which killed thousands, and eventually millions, but instead paid attention to Darfur, where the Chinese have established oil-pumping rigs and the U.S. hegemony is threatened.

Her solidarity of the oppressed Kurds (in Iraq) might seem benevolent, but as a member of the Harvard Kennedy School, why does she ignore that fact that the U.S. (specifically the Clinton administration) supplied enormous amounts of weaponry to Turkey to help facilitate Turkey ("a great alley to fight terrorism") butcher 30,000 of Kurds.

As a member of the intellectual community, she remembers her duty to ignore the fact the U.S. was the major cause for the murder of more than a million civilians after 2003, and killing more as we speak (see Iraq War). Power's notion of foreign policy criticism is skewed. Her notion that the U.S. turns a blind eye to genocides is faux, because the fact is that the U.S. conducts or supports genocides and acts of international terrorism (Vietnam, Cambodia, Guatemala, Iraq, Indonesia, Colombia, Turkey, and many, many more). She elegantly focuses on a few cases and chooses to ignore all the major incidents, primarily because the major acts of human destruction were caused the United States.

Power, quite illogically, attempts to distinguish between collateral damage (resulting from U.S. military intervention) and the deliberate killings of others. She irrationally ignores the fact that, both deliberate and unintentional killing of civilians by military/militant forces is simply inevitable. Is unintentional, yet- inevitable, killing of civilians justifiable under moral standards?

Orwell once brilliantly observed that in a tacitly totalitarian state - the intellectual community will narrow the scope of thoughts, and unpopular ideas wil always be suppressed without the use of force. The U.S. government is surely grateful to the contributions of intellectuals such as Power in their reign of state violence and excused military intervention, who supposedly are "critics" of U.S. foreign policy.

Thank You

I took a break from life and ran away for two weeks to spend time with a guy I have been friends wit

I took a break from life and ran away for two weeks to spend time with a guy I have been friends with for many years. We decided a few months ago to try and put the past behind us and make an effort at a real relationship instead of just being each others shoulder to cry on. For the most part things went well. We had our ups and downs, like any normal couple, but I think we pushed thru it. I think the hardest thing was and may still be making that transition from friends to a couple, you know what I mean... It's easier with a stranger because you haven't been used to acting a certain way around them, especially in public environments. Usually I'm all about the PDA, not making out like teenagers for all to see, but the small things like holding hands.

I can't forget those two weeks I was there, we laughed, we watched movies, played video games( MGS4 came out and we snagged that up!), hung out with friends, cooked dinners, just relaxed and cuddled up. I miss waking up in his arms. I think though what I remember the most was our good-bye. We hugged, we kissed, I cried (because I knew the hell I was coming back to). He held me tight, kissed me on the top of the head and said "Don't cry, Sam, everything will be alright." Then he took me by the hand and walk me to the car, he even opened the door for me. I got in put down the window and he leaned in for a final kiss good-bye and we exchanged "I love you" which he topped off with, "I love you more." As I pulled away he stood there, a grown man, looking like a sad little boy. He gave a shy sad wave, which made me laugh and think to myself, "God, I love him!" Those last few minutes we had together was the saddest, yet happiest I've had in a long time. I want to be there with him and I am debating moving closer to be with him. Trouble is we both have crazy exes that we just can't seem to let out of our lives and we deal with them on a daily basis.

My problem is David. He is the world's nicest guy, and I can't help but be nice to him because I don't want to hurt him... but he won't take the hint it's over. I am afraid to tell him I am contemplating moving to be with another man. He knows I want out of here, but he doesn't know that I am love with this other man. I'm afraid he might hurt himself and I guess I just keep leading him on that there is a possibility for us to be together down the road. He has plans to get a place for us and pay my way through school, he doesn't even want me to work while I finish school. I keep telling him I don't want that, but he insists he loves me and will do whatever it takes to make me happy. As many times as I tell him we are NOT a couple, he blows it off and tries harder... he thinks calling me, texting me, coming to my house with flowers and gifts, showing up at work to spend some quality time, and basically annoying the hell out of me will make me love him. It doesn't, it just makes me think of the other guy and the things we do together, how we laugh, how we goof off, how we cuddled up while we slept, and even how we fought... makes me think of all the reasons I am in love with him.

Moving scares me, the exes scare me... but I think this is something I have to do, I have to atleast give it a try.
