Are we the non-artists? I feel we're rather the non-dreamers. Afraid to do anything, unable to move. The feeling is something in between Bertolucci's The Dreamers, and the effected apathy sounded in Them Terrible's Dreamers. Except we don't bother to scream. We hold it in, inside our heads, and stifle it. Wanting to scream, but too afraid of not being heard.

When I think of places like YouTube and flickr, I don't see why not go ahead and publish stories online. No one will ever see it otherwise, right? Why not, then.

I know I don't hold the answers, but I know I make them, the ones that are mine. And that just drives me confused and conflicted. But well, that's how answers are arrived at. Which I've been thinking.... I think I take better pictures with my Polaroid Supracolor than the Polaroid SLR 680. I've been thinking of selling the 680. I wonder if anyone interested would ever reach this blog...

A pink and orangle globe candle. With a touristy 'Florida' sign smacked onto the front. That's what someone gave me as a present. Talk about totally not knowing my taste, or me for that matter. That's what that was all about. Well, what kicked it off. But, it is actually kind of pretty (I convinced myself, eventually).

Banyak pengiklan percaya bahwa audiens sasaran perlu dibombardir exposure iklan agar iklan bisa berdampak. Pengulangan yang terlalu sedikit akan dianggap sia-sia, karena tak akan sempat mendapat perhatian. Namun, sebagian lainnya meragukan pentingnya pengulangan iklan. Mereka percaya bahwa begitu orang melihat beberapa kali, maka konsumen mungkin bertindak seperti yang dikehendaki pengiklan, mengacuhkan atau justru merasa terganggu.  Lantaran hal-hal di atas berkaitan dengan pemilihan media, muncullah profesi baru: media planner.

Perencana media mesti tahu kemampuan masing-masing jenis media untuk men-deliver reach, frekuensi dan dampak. Dalam memilih media tertentu, perencana media umumnya menggunakan beberapa pertimbangan berikut:

-         Kebiasaan media audiens sasaran: Misalnya, untuk menjangkau kaum remaja, radio dan teve dianggap lebih efektif.

-         Produk:  Iklan busana wanita paling tepat dipajang di majalah berwarna, sementara kamera Polaroid bisa didemokan penggunaannya lewat teve.  Berbagai jenis media punya keunggulan masing-masing dalam visualisasi, warna, derajat kepercayaan, demonstrasi, serta kemampuan menjelaskan.

-         Pesan : Pesan promosi obral besar-besaran keesokan hari lebih tepat ada di radio, koran, dan teve. Pesan berisikan data-data teknis  mungkin memerlukan majalah khusus atau surat (mailing).

-         Biaya: Teve sangat mahal, sementara iklan koran relatif tak mahal. Namun yang lebih penting adalah biaya-per-seribu-eksposur (cost-per-thousand exposures). Perlu dibedakan istilah sirkulasi, audiens, audiens efektif, dan effective ad-exposed audience.

It’s a Dog’s Life: Photographs by William Wegman from the Polaroid Collection includes 29 photographs by one of the art world’s best known photographers. The prints on view will feature Wegman’s now-famous pet Weimaraner, Fay Ray, successor to his original dog of the same breed, Man Ray.

Wegman composes his photographs very carefully, giving extraordinary attention to the pose and lighting of his subject. Some of his Polaroid images continue Wegman’s penchant for dressing-up his subject in zany costumes and disguises, while others appear to be serious portraits—studies of his dog’s physical form that become studies in abstraction.

Wegman is one of several artists who have completed special projects using Polaroid’s amazing large-format instant camera, which weighs 235 pounds. Polaroid created it to make large format instant photography available for a wide spectrum of uses, from getting close-up magnified views of Raphael's Transfiguration for the Vatican Museum to taking color portraits of President Clinton at the White House. The photographs in the exhibition are typical of those produced using this special camera, measuring 20 x 24 inches.

With a busy month behind me including some travel I've fallen behind a little - so this is the time to catch up again.

I've been shooting with my "last gasp" polaroid film. The colour is very different to the "normal" film I've been used to, but the faded vintage colours were perfect for Italy. There will be some images from my most recent trip to Florence coming up in the next few days.

In the meantime I've also been continuing with my experiements towards "life after Polaroid" and the images that accompany this post are some of the results.

I've also undertaken a rather ambitious project over the coming year - I'll mention it in more detail as it evolves - but it will involve me spending quite a bit of time in different European cities. While I'm there I'll be taking a limited number of bookings for mini portrait shoots - so if I'm visiting your city and you are interested in doing a photo session just send me an email and I can give you some more information. Next two cities on the agenda are Prague and Gothenburg in October and November. Other cities that are definitely on the list are Amsterdam , Paris and Budapest.

I really regret that. Because I haven't been taking polaroids for very long. And I give them away only to be able to share the joy of polaroids to those who have forgotten or never had any since they soon will become history.

From now on, I think I'll only take polaroids of people. Anytime I take pictures of other things, it just doesn't work out. Or maybe a still object, that could probably be managed too. But I only have 2 shots left in my SLR 680 and prices are going up for the film as 2009 approaches. I wonder where everyone else gets their polaroid film from.

However, despite what diehard fans want to believe, Polaroid hasn't abandoned instant film. I'm actually pretty excited about the new product. Soon as I make up my ambivalent mind and pocket, I'm buying.
