...è l'amore

An interesting and informative interview with PJ Harvey by the Irish radio DJ Dave Fanning on the UK broadcaster Sky One's program Arts In The UK has popped up on You Tube. Harvey discusses many aspects of her career in the interview. The interview was originally broadcast in January of this year.

It's great to access to stuff like this via You Tube. Since the program doesn't air in America, it's nice that Harvey's fans in the States and elsewhere in the world can see it on You Tube. Harvey always gives excellent interviews. They are always intelligent and thoughtful. I enjoy her interviews almost as much as I do her music.

What Does Your Taste in Music Say About You?

This is just a quick update as it's been a while since my last post. I'm still here but I haven't felt up to blogging recently; I've been ill for several weeks and I'm still finding my routine again. I'm looking forward to posting again, though; should have a few new posts finished next week.

On the plus side I've had some time to think about my writing. I've reached a stalemate with several works and I've decided to set them aside to explore other ideas. I've been working on an early draft of a novel and I want to give that more attention. It's a social thriller and very different to my other works. Hopefully it will turn out well.

I'm also planning several short stories to finish before the end of the year. I enjoy short fiction; there's a real art to writing it well. Some of my ideas are a little ambitious but I'm looking forward to the challenge... if you don't want to push yourself, what's the point of being a writer?

Anyway, I'll get back to blogging more next week, but in the meantime who's up for a quiz? I found this one earlier and thought it was fun. My result's quite good; I enjoy a wide range of music, although I drift toward indie and alternative bands. Not sure about the financially well-off bit, though; I always thought I'd live in poverty, die at 38, and be published after my death. :)

I thought I'd post one of my favourite songs as well, to go with the quiz. This is Henry Lee by Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, a retelling of Young Hunting. Their relationship ended after this as well, which makes it even more haunting.

She reminds me of PJ Harvey and Marilyn Manson and Jane Siberry and showtunes and my ex-girlfriend from back when I dated the hooters and Lucifer and Jesus and genius.

Is That All There Is by Peggy Lee - the first version is much better quality and you can really hear the Weil influence in the arrangement of the chorus. The second was posted as a reference to another video in this post.

Is That All There Is by PJ Harvey - another more broken down lounge take on it. This was on the soundtrack to the wonderful film Basquiat where I first heard this song - before the Peggy Lee version which I later heard on the radio.

Rocket Man by William Shatner - this is more of a joke but note how Shatner borrows from the same stylistic two person perspective as Peggy Lee.

It's become evidently clear that certain people in my life do not understand the concept of boundariers. By this, I mean people whom I've had relations with in the past seem fit to tell me all about the current relations in their life either completely oblivious to the fact that perhaps I may not want to hear about their latest conquest nor how the shit-eating grin that was plastered upon their face got there this morning. I don't need nor want to know the particulars of what transpired last night nor do I need to know how their current significant other makes you incredibly happy in whatever way that they do. 

I am happy that your life is moving forward, that you are smiling if even for inappropriate reasons. 

Mostly, I am sure that it's my own fault. I've always been the one who could talk about anything and everything with anyone without batting an eyelash. Boundaries of mine were something things that were fairy tales were made of - they didn't really exist.

Oh Karma, you are a cruel bitch. I shall get even in the end.

Haja paciência

Os ingressos do TIM Festival 2008 estão a venda. Lá vamos nós, então, à discussão infindável sobre o evento mais moderninho do calendário musical? Não, acho mais interessante enumerar uma série de motivos que me fizeram abrir mão dessa patacoada.

Pratas da Casa

As atrações nacionais do TIM Festival costumam ser um primor. Em 2007, o evento tangenciou o nonsense ao escalar o falecido Toni Platão antes da Cat Power e do Antony And The Johnsons. Outra cena pitoresca foi a performance do grupo Picassos Falsos na edição 2004. A rapaziada subiu ao palco antes da cantora PJ Harvey e agraciou a platéia paulistana com a canção Supercarioca, levando na cabeça toda sorte de copos e garrafas plásticas. Como se isso não bastasse, a organização escalou para as demais edições gente como Mombojó, Nação Zumbi e Vanessa da Mata.

Este ano é a vez de Marcelo Camelo e Sany Pitbull não deixarem a peteca cair. Sei não, mas preferiria passar pelo tortura de assistir às ilustres Cibelle e Kátia B novamente.

Pague caro e pague o pato

Outro tema que evidencia a seriedade do TIM Festival é a infra-estrutura oferecida ao público, principalmente paulistano. O sistema de som do Anhembi, que mais parece um televisor ligado no volume máximo, conseguiu a proeza de transformar um show do Arcade Fire (foto) em um espetáculo medíocre - uma tarefa difícil, convenhamos. Anos depois, esse mesmo sistema simplesmente parou de funcionar durante a apresentação do Hot Chip.

A lista de palhaçadas é imensa, mas vale lembrar outros pontos: o preço cobrado pela água, pelo refrigerante, pelo estacionamento, pelo cachorro-quente, ou seja, por qualquer coisa, o estúpido confisco de máquinas digitais na entrada dos shows, os ingressos que evaporam porque uma proporção razoável de entradas – geralmente as que garantem os melhores assentos – são dadas a parceiros ou figuras globais, os atrasos desrespeitosos, os pontos de vendas e suas taxas de (in)conveniência exorbitantes e por aí vai.

Poderia falar sobre a afamada área VIP, aquela que custa os olhos da cara, relegando à massa uma visão limitada do palco, mas isso, além de ter se tornado rotineiro, rende um post mais detalhado. Finalmente, vale uma menção honrosa àquela fila que se forma todo ano em frente à FNAC Paulista. Há pelo menos uma dúzia de pontos de vendas espalhados pela cidade, e mesmo assim os modernos de plantão preferem ficar horas em pé na calçada da Avenida Paulista: é hype. Depois reclamam que o ingresso acabou rápido...

Efter att ha botaniserat bland cdon's alla rabatter kom jag på att jag ville ha mycket, men inget som var rabatterat. Tur att man får pengar nästa vecka så att det passar sig aldeles utmärkt med en faktura till i högen. Vad gör man inte för den goda konstens skull!

Björn Afzelius (borde ha köpt för länge sen), Volbeat (ja, de är helt klart med i toppen just nu) och PJ Harvey (är ju så jävla bra, borde också ha köpts för länge sen), är den brokiga skara som hamnade i korgen.

Konstaterar att jag köper på tok för lite musik. Det är iofs svårt utan några större inkomster att tala om.

So, I haphazardly scoured iTunes for some awesome, amusing, possibly obnoxious, and uh, basically "rawr," songs. This is what I came up with:

Înainte de profesiile lor artistice, toţi au ceva în comun: au ajuns la finiş pe aceeaşi cale. Fie că s-a întâmplat la vârsta inocenţei sau la maturitate, consumul de droguri le-a fost fatal. Cam sumbru sfârşitul dar nu sunt întâmplări de ieri, unele datează încă de prin 1900.

Majoritatea sunt cântăreţi sau actori: Heath Ledger, Tommy Bolin (Deep Purple), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Steve Clark (Def Leppard), Brian Epstein (Beatles), Jimi Hendrix, Marylin Monroe, Billie Hollyday, Elvis Prestley, Janis Joplin ş.a. Celelalte categorii sunt ori prea mici ca procentaj, ori nu au fost vedete şi moartea lor a rămas anonimă.

De ce aceste profesii sunt predispuse la astfel de accidente? Să fie cumva un hormon auxiliar ce prinde viaţă când devii celebru şi cere senzaţii eterice? Mă-ndoiesc. Să presupunem că au pornit cu stângul din curiozitate şi au continuat pe direcţia aceasta până au devenit dependenţi. De aici depinde numai de conştiinţa fiecăruia, deşi a merge în răspăr nu este uşor.

Atunci când moartea survine în cazul bătrâneţii sau din diverse boli, parcă şocul nu este aşa mare ca atunci când se întâmplă printr-o metodă mai mult sau mai puţin suicidală. Este imposibil să nu fii conştient de urmările unor asemenea tentative.

Aşa cum se spune despre tot ce este natural că este mai sănătos, am putea vorbi despre o moarte naturală ca despre normalitate. Dar astfel de evenimente ţin mai mult de domeniul trecutului, prezentul este plin de improvizaţii.

Moartea sau tot ce are legătură cu ea sunt subiecte inconfortabile şi deseori evitate. Cu toate acestea nu o putem ignora pentru că nimeni nu trăieşte veşnic. Cel puţin nu pe pământ! În jurul nostru viaţa începe, continuă şi se sfârşeşte. Depinde de fiecare cum alege să o consume şi ce vrea să păstreze din ea.
