I want to make it clear that I'm not calling myself the "victim" here, because there really is no victim, just some political differences.  I'm not suffering because of what they're doing, but I am highly annoyed, and honestly, a little surprised.  Maybe this speaks to my naivete about human nature (I always seem to think that people are much better than they are, and I expect people to act with a certain dignity, even if I don't always fit the bill.)  I guess I just expect these people to be civil.  I would hope that in the past, if I have had problems with people that are as shallow as political differences that I have at least been civil to them.  I may have been unable to understand them, and I may have been privately (sometimes publicly) pissed, but I hope that I haven't taken it out on them in a vitriolic way.  I recently failed at this goal for myself.  I just couldn't take it anymore, and I started putting angry comments on a facebook wall.  It began when someone was mocking my facebook political views and it ended when they accused me of having my "panties in a twist."  I just wanted them to "leave me the hell alone."

There is one thing that I understand about things like facebook, and this blog (which is why I choose to remain anonymous): it's a public forum, and I can only expect my views, or, for that matter, anything I put up, to be criticized.  I don't mind criticism.  I like it most of the time, because it helps me to develop what I believe more fully and it helps me to better communicate what I believe.  But this recent criticism differs from the ideal for public discourse about beliefs:  it is not civil and it is not constructive.

It's really just harassment,  unwarranted harassment at that.  It happens when someone looks at my facebook wall and sees that I support Obama or really dislike McCain, or am a vegetarian, or even put up a facebook note about a button which was, admittedly, an overreaction which I corrected.  When people see these things, their first reaction is to pounce.  I've gotten quite a few comments that were just plain mean and didn't do anything to challenge me or to start productive conversation.  The only goal seemed to be to piss me off and bully me.  My question is: why do these people think it is necessary to do this?  I don't really know.  And the only reason I can think of is that they a) have nothing better to do than find people with different viewpoints and harass them; b) are just ugly people lacking compassion or at least civility; c) think that harassment is an effective tool at beating people down who hold different viewpoints; d) genuinely lack understanding of what constitutes civil public debate.  The funny thing is that the majority of these people were former debaters with me, and we lived by the understanding that debate rounds included nothing personal and that ad-hom arguments or ones lacking nuances didn't get as much mileage as the ones that were reasonable, measured, and evidenced.  Perhaps they forgot.  If this isn't true, let me know.  I'd like to understand why.

Really, what this harassment achieves is intimidation.  The end of it is that the person on the receiving end doesn't feel free to voice viewpoints because he/she knows that in the future, nothing productive will come out of it, and no debate will happen.  This is what leads me to believe that the people who engage in this type of public discourse want the other person to be silenced because the harasser doesn't agree with them.  In the end, civil public debate dies, and the definition of public discourse becomes one of intimidation and domination.  Nobody wins, except maybe the harasser.  He/she gets to feel in control and self-righteous and gets to have a little power trip.  His/her viewpoint, though, doesn't become anymore valid or right.

I went through my phase of berating and disparaging other people.  This seemed to be the vogue when I was on the debate team.  We didn't seem to get the core concept of the activity we were participating in.  Then I grew up.

Honestly, I'm glad to be done with this school.  I met very few people who had the mental capacity to understand how civil debate works.  The rest just engaged in name calling and an ignorant level of argument.  The impression I got was that they were afraid of what was different and that they were too lazy to think about it more than the shallow level of their debate showed.  Life after Evangelical Institution probably won't be much different, but I hope that as people mature, they can understand how to argue and at least attempt to understand, perhaps even sympathize with, viewpoints that are different than their own.

All I'm saying is that I welcome challenges to my beliefs.  I did post them publicly, after all, and so I can't expect everyone to agree with me and to co-exist in a bucolic world because I ask them to.  I do expect, though, that challenges be reasonable and productive, and that people engage me in a way that is constructive.  I would hope that there could be a mutual respect between two people who have reached their own conclusions about the world around them.

Maybe I hope for too much.

After Senator McCain renounced Hagee's endorsement in June, we figured Lieberman would soon follow suit. But the ties between the two men still run much too deep.

Lieberman has called Hagee a "man of God," [1] even though Hagee has called the Catholic Church a "great whore," [2] blamed Hurricane Katrina on the gay community of New Orleans [3]  and said that "all Muslims have a mandate to kill Christians and Jews."  [4]

When Sen. Lieberman is challenged on his support for Pastor Hagee, he points to Hagee's pro-Israel record. So, let's take a look at Hagee's record on Israel.

1. Hagee and his group want war with Iran. [5] War with Iran is a terrible idea, for both America and Israel.  Instead, we need a tough new American diplomatic effort to engage Iran on its nuclear program and its funding of extremist groups.  Military force must be only a last resort.
2. Hagee and his group support Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank financially and politically. [6] Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank is a major impediment to a two-state solution to the conflict between the Palestinians and Israelis.
3. Hagee and his group believe in an "Armageddon" prophecy with Jews at the center. [7] They believe that before the Second Coming of Jesus, Jews will return to Israel for a final confrontation with Iran, which will cause all the Arab nations to unite under Russia's leadership, and lead to an "inferno [that] will explode across the Middle East, plunging the world toward Armageddon."

As hard as it is to believe some of this stuff, it's true.  And it's shocking that Senator Joe Lieberman would go anywhere near it.

OPEN LETTER CONCERNING DATUK SERI DR. ANWAR IBRAHIM

Al-Salaamu ‘Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu,

We, the undersigned, believe the honorable brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim to be of the highest ethical and moral integrity, a devout Muslim and a devoted father and husband. He is universally recognized as an advocate for justice and fairness, and he has a long history of promoting Islam and championing Islamic ethical and charitable causes.

We are deeply concerned about the physical safety and freedom of our respected brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim. We are troubled by the unsubstantiated and clearly scurrilous claims made against him and his character. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“O ye who believe! Shun much suspicion; for lo! some suspicion is a crime. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Ye abhor that (so abhor the other)! And keep your duty (to Allah). Lo! Allah is Relenting, Merciful.” (The Holy Qur’an, Al-Hujurat, 49:12)

Our beloved Malaysia is today one of the leading countries of the Muslim Ummah. It is an example of a successful modern Islamic country, and in many ways a model and example for other Muslim countries. This has been due to the Grace of Allah and then largely to the historical and invaluable efforts and contributions made by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammed and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi (among others). Every Muslim who knows anything about Malaysia is proud and appreciative of these efforts. Equally, every Muslim who knows Malaysian politics is appreciative of the formidable political courage in leadership exhibited by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammed during his time as Prime Minister of Malaysia and of the example of personal piety and forbearance that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi has given the Ummah today.

Indeed, perhaps precisely because of Malaysia’s prominence within the Ummah and the world, we would like to point out that the global Muslim community is paying close attention to the way our respected and honorable brother Dr. Anwar Ibrahim is treated. We have no wish to interfere in the internal politics of Malaysia, or in civil and criminal accusations within the country, which we reiterate are ultimately the business only of the Malaysian state and people. However, the spectacle, ten years ago, of our respected brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim sitting patiently in court after having been personally and illegally beaten up by then Police Chief of Malaysia is still fresh within our minds as a travesty of justice and impartiality under the law in a leading Muslim country. We are all still ashamed of that image, which will ever be indelibly engraved in our memories. So we remind our bothers in Malaysia that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that justice is the very goal of government in Islam. And Allah Himself says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Say: My Lord enjoineth justice …” (Al-A’raf, 7:29)

Thus we feel that we have a right — and indeed, an obligation under Islam — to strongly urge the Malaysian authorities to facilitate a swift, transparent and just resolution to this issue and resolutely ensure the safety, freedom and physical well-being of our honorable and respected brother Anwar Ibrahim. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“The Truth is from thy Lord (O Muhammad), so be not thou of those who waver.” (Al-Baqarah, 2:147)

Moreover, given the political implications of the timing of this latest incident; given the political undertones of the previous incidents of similar accusations made in 1998 — which led to the wrongful incarceration of Dr. Anwar Ibrahim for six years, and that have since been publicly refuted in the highest Malaysian court of law — and given the proven questionable nature of the authorities involved in the investigation, we feel morally obliged to also state our deep concern about the prospects of true justice for Anwar Ibrahim in the current authorities in the police and prosecution departments (whose leadership was personally involved in Dr. Anwar Ibrahim’s previous unjust accusations) without deliberate, careful, impartial and independent political oversight. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Lo! Allah enjoineth justice and kindness, and giving to kinsfolk, and forbiddeth lewdness and abomination and wickedness. He exhorteth you in order that ye may take heed.” (Al-Nahl, 16:90)

Finally, we are morally obliged as Muslims to also point out that our religion and our beloved Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regard false accusations in these matters to be of extremely grave consequence. In fact, under Islamic Law, accusations of this magnitude that are not substantiated by four eye-witnesses of impeccable character (such as did not occur neither with these accusations nor with the previous ones) incur severe legal punishment only for the accusers themselves. Perhaps what is most insidious and disturbing, however, is the likely malevolent and slanderous intent behind these attacks on the moral character of our brother Dr. Anwar Ibrahim. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“When ye welcomed it with your tongues, and uttered with your mouths that whereof ye had no knowledge, ye counted it a trifle. In the sight of Allah it is very great. / Wherefor, when ye heard it, said ye not: It is not for us to speak of this. Glory be to Thee (O Allah)! This is awful calumny. / Allah admonisheth you that ye repeat not the like thereof ever, if ye are (in truth) believers.” (The Holy Qur’an, Surat Al-Nur, 24:15-17)

However, we have complete trust in Allah and so remain hopeful that the highest political authorities in Malaysia will, in sha Allah, secure an honest and just outcome to this deeply troubling situation. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Let there arise from you a band of people who invite to goodness, and enjoin right conduct and forbid wrong. Such are they who are successful.” (Aal-‘Imran, 3:104)

Wal-Salaamu ‘Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu.

Now, a website, LiebermanMustGo.com, is asking people to sign a petition for Lieberman to lose his chairmanship and be kicked out of the caucus after the November elections, when the Democrats are expected to pick up more seats, so they won't need him anymore.  The petition has now gathered over 48,000 signatures.  Robert Greenwald, who helped design the site, said, "Given that Lieberman is actively and aggressively attacking the candidate for presidency of his party, it seems pretty clear he should not be given any of the perks that come with being a member of the Democratic Party."

The whole thing started when Lieberman agreed to address the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Lieberman told reporters that he left the weekly lunch of the Senate Democrats on Tuesday when criticisms of McCain's energy policies came up, saying, "I just didn't feel it was appropriate for me to be there."  Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) said that a Senator came up to him to complain about Lieberman.  Durbin told reporters, "It was the right thing to do.  This is a delicate situation."  Sorry, Mr. Durbin, but that's not being a very good party whip right there.  Good for Lieberman, bad for you and the party.

Asked about crossing a point of no return, Lieberman told reporters, "I don't have any line that I have in my mind.  If it happened, I'd know it when I saw it."  He, however, said that he doesn't expect to leave the Democratic caucus any time soon: "Senator Reid has been easy to work with.  I have a lot of good friends in the caucus, and I don't have any intention of doing that before the end of this session of Congress."

And Lieberman isn't worried about getting kicked out of his position, saying, "That decision is up to my colleagues in the Democratic caucus next year.  I'm going to do what I think is right now and not worry about what the political consequences may be for me.  I strongly support John McCain.  I believe in him, his strength, his principle, his effectiveness, so if he thought that I could help him by speaking at the Republican convention, I would do that.  And I would do it really not to go and attack anybody but to explain why I as a Democrat have crossed party lines to support John McCain and why I hope a lot of other Democrats and independents will do the same."

Lately, Lieberman has been critical of Barack Obama; on a CNN interview he called him "naïve" on Iran, and said, The fact that the spokesperson for Hamas would say they would welcome the election of Senator Obama really does raise the question, 'Why?'"

He criticized Obama's lack of a consistent stance on issues during a FOX interview, saying, "Senator Obama has really moved.  Since he clinched the nomination a month ago, he has altered and nuanced more big positions more quickly than I can remember any other presidential nominee."

Here are some reactions from Senators:

• Dianne Feinstein (D-CA): "I very much regret what he's doing, candidly, but there isn't anything I can do about it, and that's really all I want to say."
• Chris Dodd (D-CT): "I think they're heading in the wrong direction.  And I see Joe as an ally on most matters and a person who's been supportive of Democrats here on most issues."
• Susan Collins (R-ME) (Lieberman has donated to her campaign): "My hope is that he will not be punished for doing what he thinks is right."
• Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV): "Anytime we have a problem here, with the exception of Iraq, Joe Lieberman's with us.  So I wish people would leave him alone.  We'll get to next year when we get there."

I say he should just stand up one day, give 'em the finger and move to the other side of the aisle.  That's some C-SPAN daytime drama for ya!

If I were him, I would not let them use me, just to kick me to the side of the road when they don't want me anymore.  Show them that they can't just use you and then dump you.

Now, I say all of this, but I should note that I disagree with Lieberman on most issues.  If McCain were to pick him as his VP (which Lieberman said he does not want, nor expect), it'd be stupid of McCain.  You don't pick a VP because you agree with them on one main issue.

I like Lieberman, but he's a liberal - but the Democrats would be stupid to do this to him.  It could come to haunt them.

It has been reported that once the election is over, the Obamas will be looking for a new four-legged family member (much to his daughters' delight).

The American Kennel Club (AKC) has suggested five types of purebred dogs that would fit the Obamas' lifestyle. While we don't disagree that it's important to choose a dog that matches well with the family, mixed breeds should certainly be considered along with pure breeds. Also, whether purebred or mutt, we believe the Obamas should make a winning choice and adopt a family dog, not buy one.

While I understand landlords' concern with potentially destructive and/or noisy pets, I still believe pets should be allowed in rental housing. If a tenant is responsible and confident enough that his/her pet is disciplined and fit to live in an apartment, he/she should be willing to pay a pet damage deposit (to be returned upon moving out granted there are no damages).

If this were the case, I truly believe there would be less animals in our shelters since so many cite "moving" (and inability to find an affordable pet friendly housing) as a reason to surrender their pet to the shelter.

The pictures above were posted by a Soshi fan onto several Korean Soshi fan sites and fan cafes. Soshi fans were so dumbfounded by this incident that they have still not fully recovered from the initial shock to deal with this issue (aka SNSD’s Greatest Insult towards Soshi fans).

So there go the fan letters. I’ve been wondering what the artists do with the enormous number of fan letters and now I know. Anyway, some Sushi fan at Daum wants netizens to spread this…shit explanation she wrote so that the “truth” can get out (how noble…pfft). So we think, yeah, why not? We’ll give you a hand, Sushi fan. SNSD is too innocent to throw the fans letters in the trash can anyway, right? The only devil who could do such an evil thing was the cleaning lady, right?

One of my dad’s friends is an insider at Music Bank and when one of the staff positions open up, he calls me and I work there as a side-job. What I do is is what everyone can do, like doing random chores and filling requests..
For example, I move clothes around and do other random chores while poking into SNSD’s dressing room to see their faces once in a while.
Just like other times, my father’s friend called me up and I went in as a Music Bank staff on July 4. I was doing various work when I happened to go into SNSD’s dressing room. The cleaning lady mistook me as a Soshi fan and directed me towards the fan letters and asked, “Are you not taking these?” I replied that I wasn’t SNSD’s manager. Then the cleaning lady said “Ah, then I should throw them all away” and she threw them in the trash. Among the discarded fan letters were some that were torn open. When I saw pictures of fan letters thrown away by SNSD floating around the internet, I wrote this. Because I am a staff member and must follow the rules accordingly, I cannot take any pictures..For peope who have read this, I hope they spread this quickly.

Anyway, the conclusion is that this is not a fraudulent claim and that the letters were delivered to SNSD, who recieved them but did not responsibly take care of them. The cleaning lady who didn’t know anything threw away the letters and the fans took photos of these discarded letters in the trash.

Soshi fans should not rashly accuse Cartel fans of creating a conspiracy and cuss them out.

i dont know what is the purpose for having this petition. To get rid of SNSD? No way.. SM won't disband them because SNSD is the source of the FanBoys, which is quite rare. But if their intention is to show SNSD how much they hate them, maybe it'll work for only A FEW MONTHS.

The ICC has charged Sudanese President Bashir with genocide.

Now the U.N. Security Council must finally take the effective, decisive action needed to end the genocide.

On Monday the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued formal charges against Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir for genocide.
How Bashir will respond is unclear. His record suggests that he could take his vengeance out on Darfuris.
If that danger weren't enough, a BBC report this week revealed evidence suggesting that China, one of the Security Council's permanent five members, has been providing the weapons used to carry out the genocide.
It's never been clearer that the U.N. Security Council needs a comprehensive plan for Darfur. And its leaders need the political will to implement it.

The ICC prosecutor's charge against Bashir is the first time the court has made such a charge against a sitting head of state. The prosecutor spent years gathering evidence and found that Bashir and his government orchestrated a strategy of genocidal attacks.
And according to the prosecutor, when Bashir didn't kill with direct violence he "organized the destitution, insecurity, and harassment of the survivors. He did not need bullets. He used other weapons: rapes, hunger and fear. As efficient, but silent."
And all this happened under the nose of the U.N. Security Council. The Council has watched Bashir unleash a 5-year campaign of terror...without consequences. It hasn't sent enough peacekeepers. It hasn't provided enough equipment. And it hasn't held Bashir accountable as he defies one Security Council resolution after another.
It is time for the U.N. Security Council to finally follow through on its commitment to bring peace to Darfur.

According to the the Petition Site, "the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced plans to kill America's wild horses rather than effectively manage our wild natural heritage.

BLM claims it can no longer afford to round up wild horses and confine them until it finds people to adopt them, and the agency wants to euthanize these majestic wild beauties or sell them to the highest bidder "without limitation" - meaning sell them to anyone, even if the bidder also plans to kill these horses.

Why does BLM need to round up wild horses and send them to slaughter? The BLM claims that the agency can't "allow horses to multiply unchecked on the range without causing an environmental disaster." But there are less than 30,000 wild horses on the range versus at least 3 million grazing cows. So rather than address the environmental damage caused by cattle overgrazing and expanding oil and gas exploration on our public lands, the BLM would rather placate corporate cattle ranchers who view mustangs as competition for forage, and drive wild horses - our country's symbol of freedom and independent spirit - to extinction.

This plan is simply outrageous. Stand up for our wild horses and send a comment to BLM today. Urge our government to abide by the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burro Act of 1971 and effectively manage the land to preserve wild horses rather than kill them!"

OPEN LETTER CONCERNING DATUK SERI DR. ANWAR IBRAHIM

Al-Salaamu ‘Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu,

We, the undersigned, believe the honorable brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim to be of the highest ethical and moral integrity, a devout Muslim and a devoted father and husband. He is universally recognized as an advocate for justice and fairness, and he has a long history of promoting Islam and championing Islamic ethical and charitable causes.

We are deeply concerned about the physical safety and freedom of our respected brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim. We are troubled by the unsubstantiated and clearly scurrilous claims made against him and his character. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“O ye who believe! Shun much suspicion; for lo! some suspicion is a crime. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Ye abhor that (so abhor the other)! And keep your duty (to Allah). Lo! Allah is Relenting, Merciful.” (The Holy Qur’an, Al-Hujurat, 49:12)

Our beloved Malaysia is today one of the leading countries of the Muslim Ummah. It is an example of a successful modern Islamic country, and in many ways a model and example for other Muslim countries. This has been due to the Grace of Allah and then largely to the historical and invaluable efforts and contributions made by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammed and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi (among others). Every Muslim who knows anything about Malaysia is proud and appreciative of these efforts. Equally, every Muslim who knows Malaysian politics is appreciative of the formidable political courage in leadership exhibited by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammed during his time as Prime Minister of Malaysia and of the example of personal piety and forbearance that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi has given the Ummah today.

Indeed, perhaps precisely because of Malaysia’s prominence within the Ummah and the world, we would like to point out that the global Muslim community is paying close attention to the way our respected and honorable brother Dr. Anwar Ibrahim is treated. We have no wish to interfere in the internal politics of Malaysia, or in civil and criminal accusations within the country, which we reiterate are ultimately the business only of the Malaysian state and people. However, the spectacle, ten years ago, of our respected brother Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim sitting patiently in court after having been personally and illegally beaten up by then Police Chief of Malaysia is still fresh within our minds as a travesty of justice and impartiality under the law in a leading Muslim country. We are all still ashamed of that image, which will ever be indelibly engraved in our memories. So we remind our bothers in Malaysia that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that justice is the very goal of government in Islam. And Allah Himself says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Say: My Lord enjoineth justice …” (Al-A’raf, 7:29)

Thus we feel that we have a right — and indeed, an obligation under Islam — to strongly urge the Malaysian authorities to facilitate a swift, transparent and just resolution to this issue and resolutely ensure the safety, freedom and physical well-being of our honorable and respected brother Anwar Ibrahim. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“The Truth is from thy Lord (O Muhammad), so be not thou of those who waver.” (Al-Baqarah, 2:147)

Moreover, given the political implications of the timing of this latest incident; given the political undertones of the previous incidents of similar accusations made in 1998 — which led to the wrongful incarceration of Dr. Anwar Ibrahim for six years, and that have since been publicly refuted in the highest Malaysian court of law — and given the proven questionable nature of the authorities involved in the investigation, we feel morally obliged to also state our deep concern about the prospects of true justice for Anwar Ibrahim in the current authorities in the police and prosecution departments (whose leadership was personally involved in Dr. Anwar Ibrahim’s previous unjust accusations) without deliberate, careful, impartial and independent political oversight. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Lo! Allah enjoineth justice and kindness, and giving to kinsfolk, and forbiddeth lewdness and abomination and wickedness. He exhorteth you in order that ye may take heed.” (Al-Nahl, 16:90)

Finally, we are morally obliged as Muslims to also point out that our religion and our beloved Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regard false accusations in these matters to be of extremely grave consequence. In fact, under Islamic Law, accusations of this magnitude that are not substantiated by four eye-witnesses of impeccable character (such as did not occur neither with these accusations nor with the previous ones) incur severe legal punishment only for the accusers themselves. Perhaps what is most insidious and disturbing, however, is the likely malevolent and slanderous intent behind these attacks on the moral character of our brother Dr. Anwar Ibrahim. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“When ye welcomed it with your tongues, and uttered with your mouths that whereof ye had no knowledge, ye counted it a trifle. In the sight of Allah it is very great. / Wherefor, when ye heard it, said ye not: It is not for us to speak of this. Glory be to Thee (O Allah)! This is awful calumny. / Allah admonisheth you that ye repeat not the like thereof ever, if ye are (in truth) believers.” (The Holy Qur’an, Surat Al-Nur, 24:15-17)

However, we have complete trust in Allah and so remain hopeful that the highest political authorities in Malaysia will, in sha Allah, secure an honest and just outcome to this deeply troubling situation. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Let there arise from you a band of people who invite to goodness, and enjoin right conduct and forbid wrong. Such are they who are successful.” (Aal-‘Imran, 3:104)

Récemment j'ai reçu une belle petite lettre qui m'informait que les messages textes couterons désormais 15 sous mais ceux entrant aussi. SUPER !!! Non mais ça n'a vraiment aucun sens. Un même message va rapporté 2 fois à Bell ?! Et nous devrons même payer pour les messages inutiles entrant. Ça me dépasse vraiment. Ça va revenir moins cher de parler à quelqu'un une minute que d'envoyer un message et recevoir la réponse !

L'Union des consommateurs entend surveiller la situation de près et rappelle qu'un recours collectif contre Bell mobilité solo, qui avait décidé d'éliminer les minutes non utilisées et accumulées par les abonnés, avait forcé la compagnie à reculer avant même l'entrée en vigueur de la mesure. Là aussi, il s'agissait d'une modification unlilatérale de contrat en vertu d'une clause ouvrant la porte à ce type de geste en cours de contrat.

Les groupes de consommateurs estiment que le législateur doit intervenir afin de baliser les contrats dans le domaine des télécommunications et interdire ces clauses de modifications unilatérales abusives.

L'enjeu est de taille: les dernières données de l'Association canadienne des télécommunications sans fil font état de 45,3 millions de messages envoyés à chaque jour au Canada. Potentiellement, donc, un tarif de 0,15 $ à la réception pourrait représenter des revenus de 6,75 millions $... par jour.
