Noche de invierno. El hombre gris cruza el desolado parque hacia la solitaria parada de autobús que lo conducirá a su jaula de cemento. Ha parado de llover pero el frío es intenso y algunos charcos ya presentan señales de inminente congelación. El ruido del motor rasga el silencio y el autobús iluminado es un oasis de humanidad en medio de ninguna parte.

El hombre gris paga el billete y el conductor ni se gira. Despoblado, el autobús va perdiendo unidades hasta que el hombre gris se queda como único ocupante, última fila, último asiento. Faltan muchas paradas hasta la suya, la que está cerca de su viejo apartamento, vacío y sucio. Oscuros pensamientos de nostalgia, rencor y abandono ocupan su mente.

Nadie sube ni baja del autobús hasta su parada. Así es cada día, y así será en éste su último trayecto. No volverá a la oficina. Le han pedido que no vuelva, y el hombre gris siempre ha sido muy receptivo a las sugerencias ajenas. Su resentimiento cambia de objeto, de la mujer que perdió al jefe que ha dejado su vida hueca. Antes al menos tenía el trabajo. Desde esta noche de invierno ya no le queda ni eso.

Súbitamente, el autobús se detiene de golpe, como atragantado, e interrumpe el catálogo de odios del hombre gris. Uno más va a unirse a la lista: el conductor le avisa de que el vehículo se ha averiado y de que debe bajarse. Es muy tarde, ya no pasará otro autobús. Solo, rodeado de nada en un barrio desconocido de hormigón, celdas impersonales de una cárcel de corazones, el hombre gris deambula en busca de un taxi para llegar a su cotidiana soledad. A oscuras, cansado, malhumorado, siente la derrota, se declara vencido, claudica al fin ante las penalidades de la vida, felicita al triunfador, hace firme propósito de quitarse de enmedio e incluso una lágrima se asoma al balcón de sus ojos. La lágrima se lo piensa mejor al ver al fondo de una calle un local iluminado por una fuerte luz blanca.

Un cine ruinoso. Cantando bajo la lluvia, anuncia el cartel, sesión golfa, 01:00 horas... El hombre gris piensa en retrasar su llegada a la soledad doméstica. Aborrece los musicales, pero ése no. La taquillera, una mujer gorda y fea que parece vestida con el camisón de dormir le vende una entrada con desgana, sin decir una palabra. El vestíbulo está en penumbra, no hay nadie que corte el papelito naranja que sirve de ticket. Otra mujer parecida a la anterior, quizá la misma vendedora de entradas que se ha teletransportado en un segundo, piensa el hombre gris, vende unos pringosos paquetes de palomitas de la semana anterior. El hombre gris compra uno. Le recuerda su infancia, cuando el sol aún iluminaba la ciudad.

La cortina de terciopelo rojo hace años que dejó de encajar en la definición de limpieza, y la sala vacía no es más que una sábana blanca y unas filas de asientos de madera que vieron pasar mejores días. Los palcos cegados son como ventanas abiertas a otra dimensión y las luces son tan tenues que la piel adopta un blanquecino tono mortuorio.

No es la una, pero la sesión comienza justo cuando el hombre gris se sienta en la última fila, último asiento y antes de que le dé tiempo a recrearse de nuevo en su amargura. Make them laugh. Con el paso de los minutos, una sonrisa se esculpe a duras penas en la acartonada cara del hombre gris. Sus pies cobran movimiento de manera autónoma, y un estridente rugido gutural parecido a un tarareo que proviene de su garganta acompaña los bucles acrobáticos de Gene Kelly en la pantalla.

Cuando sale del cine, el hombre camina deprisa y no puede reprimir dar dos pasos de baile al llegar a una farola, por fin encendida. Un taxi está detenido en la esquina. La taxista es una joven que durante el trayecto le habla de su último verano. El hombre no volverá a sentirse solo.

Someone somewhere decided that 19th century novels make good musicals. Since I moved to New York - which isn't that long ago - we had a Frankenstein (plus a young one), a Dracula, a Woman in White, and of course there was a Jane Eyre not long before that. Why not? It worked for Les Miz... At least that's what these producers must be thinking. But watching these shows actually makes me wonder why Les Miz worked so well in the first place...

What the composers of Les Miz did so well, is discover the moments in the novel that could be turned into songs, and then only include those moments in the musical. It's not just that the show has no spoken dialogue: it hardly has any sung dialogue, either. If it was an opera, it would be all arias and no recitative - just the way I would like my operas actually, but I'm a lowbrow. Unfortunately Jill Santoriello, who tried to follow in the steps of Lionel Bart who also wrote music, lyrics, and book for his Charles Dickens' adaptation, has failed to do the same for A Tale of Two Cities.

The main problem seems to be that there is just too much happening: there really isn't any time left for songs, if Dickens' complex plot is to be reduced to two and a half hours. Why wasn't that a problem in Les Miz? I am not quite sure: Hugo's novel is longer and certainly not any simpler. But perhaps the action is. The plot really only moves in one direction: Valjean is on the run. Then he is on the run again. And again. Two CIties is a story of intrigue, hidden identities, plot reversals, you get the idea. The characters don't have any time to stop and break into song! Some of Santoriello's "songs" don't really last more than a minute.

In addition Santoriello's music is a) repetitive (in itself) and b) a repetition of all the cliches commited by all the musicals I mentioned above. The only song that stands out is a "masque" telling the story of the execution of the French monarchs, and that's probably because of Warren Carlyle's direction/choreograhy. It is also Carlyle's most inventive moment - the rest of the show looks as banal and repetitive as it sounds.

The failure of a musical is often blamed on the book. In this case, at least we know who to blame.

Byłam drugi raz w Theater am Potsdamer Platz na musicalu Mamma Mia. Znowu było rewelacyjnie. Sama w życiu nie pozwoliłabym sobie na zakup biletu (104.47 EUR, ze studencką zniżką) - dostałam go ot tak po prostu w prezencie od mojej przyjaciółki. Żeby mi był choć odrobinę mniej trudno tutaj przetrwać. Warto było, bo muzyka ABBY jest rewelacyjna, optymistyczna, pełna energii. W dodatku po niemiecku, a więc dla mnie zrozumiale. Do tego odrobina humoru, ciekawe twarze na scenie i mamy wszystko, co nam do szczęścia potrzebne. Przynajmniej przez niecałe trzy godziny.

A teksty piosenek.. prawdziwe, uniwersalne, o proszę:

Grecia 1999, nell'incantevole isola di Kalokairi ne stanno per accadere di tutti i colori, la giovane Sophie (Amanda Seyfried ) sta per sposarsi con Sky (Dominic Cooper), il suo più grande desiderio è quello di farsi portare all'altare dal padre, in realtà il padre non l'ha mai conosciuto, ma un giorno la ragazza trova il diario segreto della madre Donna (Meryl Streep) scoprendo così tre nomi che potrebbero essere suo padre. A questo punto non sapendo qual'è il vero padre decide di invitarli tutti e 3 al suo matrimonio firmandosi con il nome della madre. I 3 uomini ignari del fatto si presentano sull'isola, Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), Harry Bright (Colin Firth) e Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) sono completamente differenti tra di loro e quando si accorgeranno che Sophie potrebbe essere la figlia faranno di tutto per far credere alla ragazza che ciascuno è il padre. Insomma equivoci a non finire, straordinaria l'interpretazione di Meryl Streep che recitando in un musical sembra che l'età per lei non passi mai.

Não que o espectador "normal" não consiga entender o filme. Mas as conexões e significações aparecem mais em alto relevo para aqueles que já prestaram mais atenção enquanto escutavam os principais sucessos dos carinhas de Liverpool. Aqui, as músicas dos Beatles e a Guerra do Vietnã formam o pano de fundo para uma história de amor entre uma adolescente da aristocracia estadunidense e um imigrante inglês aspirante a artista.

    É exatamente em Liverpool que começa a história de Jude (Jim Sturgess), que parte para os Estados Unidos em busca do pai, deixando para trás o trabalho nos estaleiros do porto da cidade. Enquanto isso, Lucy (Ewan Rachel Wood) espera o começo da faculdade e sonha com a vida de casada com seu noivo, prestes a embarcar para o Vietnã. Quando chega ao seu destino, Jude conhece Max (Joe Anderson), irmão de Lucy. Os dois tornam-se grandes amigos e partem para Nova York, dividem apartamento com outros personagens importantes, artistas proeminentes da cena roqueira da cidade. São Sadie (Dana Fuchs), clara referência à Janis Joplin e JoJo (Martin Luther McCoy), caricatura de Jimmy Hendrix, produzida com esmero e requintes de detalhe.

    Quando o noivo de Lucy é morto na guerra, ela parte para junto do irmão e começa uma vida de ativista política na Big Apple. Não tarda para Max também ser convocado e ter de se apresentar para o "tio Sam". É inevitável também que o romance entre Lucy e Jude se configure, começando subitamente de maneira apaixonada, e depois cambaleando com a chegada de um novo amigo de Lucy. Com a Guerra do Vietnã entrando nas salas de estar através da televisão, chega também a notícia do assassinato de Martin Luther King e o conflito entre estudantes e polícia explode nas grandes cidades americanas. É em uma época de segregação, de turbulência não apenas social, mas também psicológica, em que as coisas começam a ruir para grande parte dos personagens.

    É mais precisamente um efeito de encaixe como um quebra-cabeça que a diretora Julie Taymor fez ao longo do filme. As músicas não são apenas jogadas em uma cena, elas fazem parte da narrativa e foram interpretadas pelos próprios atores, criando uma trilha recheada de sucessos, sempre em novas versões. Cerca de 30 letras foram matéria-prima para o roteiro e por isso parece que, de certa forma, enquanto existe uma comunicação entre as músicas através dos personagens, existe também uma analogia entre o tempo de duração do filme e a da trajetória da banda. Além disso, todo o universo da contracultura e do movimento hippie aparece em diversas citações estrategicamente posicionadas. O que irá levar boa parte dos fãs a ataques de loucura simplesmente por identificar esses códigos.

    Quem conhece bem as letras irá identificar alguns símbolos mais importantes, outros estão soltos, como o lendário Cavern Club em Liverpool, que aparece logo no inicio do filme e o Cafe Wha? em Nova York, que aparece como Café Huh? . As melhores seqüências são: a apresentação de Max ao exército encenada com a música "I Want You"; apesar da participação tosca de Bono Vox como Dr. Robert, a cena de uma viagem psicodélica ao som de "I Am The Walrus" é impagável. Bom, outros detalhes levariam horas de explicações, mas o principal é que Across The Universe é um bom pedaço de nostalgia, e para um musical, cumpre o que promete.

It was pretty magical and reminded me of the days when I went to see local bands live at the Sugar Refinery on Granville St. Music really brings people together~ I'm thinking of getting the soundtrack now and use it when I have a road trip next. They have strong accents so it takes a bit to warm up and pick up on their dialogue.

    It's an Irish musical film set in Dublin. 2007
