I heard that the ‘Material Girl’ is on tour once again - maybe it’s her last tour?

I heard that the 'Material Girl' is on tour once again - maybe it's her last tour? One last Whoopla! to Wow fans and critics alike. I considered going to see her again...hmm, the first and only time was in 1987. My Mom went with me after a friend's mother said, "Absolutely NOT!" Hmm, her loss...I was totally in awe of her stellar performance amidst her many wardrobe changes. Yes, she was indeed, racy then - something we become benign to as movies and TV forge the new sexual revolution.

Oh, yes, the concert, well to really experience her connection to the US and near her hometown, one should revel in seeing her perform in Detroit, MI. I checked online at a couple ticket agencies - prices were about the same. She plays at Ford Field on November 18, and if I wanted to feel lighter than air with possible side effects, then the tickets were a mere $83, but if I wanted to feel as if I was riding in a hot air balloon with some stability, then I could come down a level and fork out $144-157. I'm sure this is pretty good by today's standards, and because I haven't seen a concert since, ummmmm, well, hmmm, I think it was 2001. Ticket prices are way out in left field for my budget.

I admire Madonna and her accomplishments, her strength to endure critics' sometimes rude comments and her empowerment to all young and old girls alike. But, I'm passing up this opportunity, since I've already had the "experience" of seeing an icon. However, I'll pull out all my albums, CDs and cassettes on concert day and "dance like no one is watching" maybe a little Vogue-ing and "Just Like a Prayer" she and her entourage will be in my thoughts for their safe journey across the states and hope all who see her enjoy this century 'Material Girl' in all her glory and empowerment!

Madonna fired up her new Sticky Sweet Tour in England with the usual: leather, ambiguous male dancers and lumping John McCain in with a man who destroyed approx. 6 million Jews in WWII, Adolf Hitler.

It wasn't enough for the material grandma to visually assault the overpaying crowd with her 50+ "Sticky Sweet" Touring Buns...but apparently Madonna decided to throw in a little political statement, as self important artists tend to do, during the performance. So on a giant video-tron during her show John McCain's picture rolled across screen in a montage of pics including Adolf Hitler as well as Zimbabwe's authoritarian President Robert Mugabe.

In a separate video statement, John Lennon, Al Gore, Gandhi, and Obama's picture were together in a montage obviously more favorable and positive.

Madonna has had a bad year. Her new album is bad. There are reports her marriage is on the skids. She's in an African adopting competition with Angelina Jolie and losing. Her brother wrote a tell-all book about her. She just turned the big 50...which isn't bad unless your whole career has been based on being a twenty-something sex symbol (bad in her case). So overall, it's not been great. But that's no reason for Madonna to stop using common sense or human decency for the sake of publicity and associate McCain with Hitler.

Listen, I don't like what Bush has done for the past 8 years. It's because of that fact I feel like running with wild abandon into the arms of Obama. So McCain is not neccessarily my guy. But I certainly recognize he's not on the same level with ADOLF HITLER!!! OK?? Madonna once again trades human decency for a buck. I'm not worried about the political impact it may have, because that's giving Madonna and her fan base fathoms more creditability she has or deserves. This is a woman who wore cones on her boobs while trying to pull off the ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ Hairstyle.’ I'm a 28 year old in 2008...am I supposed to be impressed by that? I've seen so much cooler. Maybe that was new and fascinating in the 80's but what have you done for me lately Madonna, other than try and shock me by using a political association? Is she still a trendsetter? An icon? Is she someone who has something to say? Is she really that controversial?

No. Madonna is tired, worn and losing her grip on our attention spans. Society has upped the stakes and she can't hang. So now Mrs. Truth or Dare is grasping at the last straws to be controversially relevant, but with her last few stunts, records, and personal revelations, its now it's very apparent how publicly irrelevant Madonna and her credibility has been all along. The comparison to Hitler was the highlighting of Madonna's unbelievable lack of education and sensitivity.

I may not like McCain's party and it may be popular to bash Republicans right now because Bush has destroyed our country in and out for 8 years, but Hitler was responsible for the torturing, maiming, decapitating, gutting, burning, and general spiritual desecration of nearly 6 million people on this earth out of sheer evil. McCain isn't even in the same cosmos as Hitler let alone the same ballpark, and Madonna should shut her gaping publicity pie hole and open a book before she decides to make political comparisons for shock value.

Am auzit cum ca as fi superficiala. Hm.

Unde gaseste puterea necesara? In machiaj?

Astept...

'Life with My Sister Madonna', Penn-ed by her brother & longtime collaborator, Christopher Ciccone.

Hailed as a scathing tell-all about the Material Girl, this unauthorized biography just came out and Madonna is Evita-ntly none too thrilled about it. (Sorry, but the puns are irresistible.)

"Why bother?", you ask.

Several reasons (I answer!)

The main one?

I was at the bookstore and there was the book, staring boldly at me from its pedestal, daring me to pick it up. And since I'm finished with my last book, I figured, why not? It's summertime after all, and a good time for some light reading. And i do love a good biography.

Also, a few months ago I saw the DVD of her Confessions tour and rather liked it. It had been a long time since I had really paid much attention to Madonna or her work. But the concert recaptured my interest.

Before I discuss the book's main thread & sizzle, I want to touch on the part that intrigued me the most:

Ciccone talks at great length about the art he helped Madonna collect, as well as the design work he did for her various homes. It's full of great details and rich enough to prompt me to look up each piece he mentioned.

I especially wanted to see the "19th century gilded Russian chair" he mentions on Page 161.

Well... in the process, I found something even more satisfying:

An Architectural Digest site with 12 photos of the interior of the Material Girl's Manhattan Apartment on Central Park West. The art is truly wonderful, as are many of the interiors.

This was great as it really brings Ciccone's art selections to life and puts them in context.

Check it out:

http://www.architecturaldigest.com/homes/features/2007/05/madonna_slideshow_052007?showall=true

But back to the book.

I'm only two-thirds into it, and it's definitely a page-turner. I wouldn't say fascinating, only because nothing in it really shocks or surprises me. But it's certainly a fun---and at at times, touching---read.

It's essentially well-written, thorough and entertaining with lots of juicy tidbits, though Ciccone tends to get a little trite, both in his love/admiration and his scorn for his formidable older sister. And pretty transparent in much of it in terms of wanting to prove something--himself, his talent and all his contributions to Madonna's success. But I can't really blame him, considering his role in Madonna's rise to super-stardom and the rotten treatment he claims to have often received from her. Apparently she dishes out her love and her wrath in equal parts, something that I can imagine being very unsettling to him.
Or anyone with a pulse.

While many (including me) don't approve of writing "tell-alls" for a few bucks (or at all), especially about family, others may be surprised it took him this long for this cathartic act, given the degree of disillusionment & hurt he's been grappling with for years. Still, one might ask, "why now?" Ciccone does write about the fact that it's taken him a long time to let go of his fears and get out from under her shadow. Also, I guess if you're going to live your life in the limelight, you can't very well hide the "shadow" parts, as Carl Jung would call them.

Madonna is portrayed pretty much as we've come to view her over the years:

A boldly ambitious, fearless enigma, full of contradictions, polarity & complexity.

Still, I can't help but ask, "is that really that uncommon among celebs? Or other mere mortals, for that matter?"

Madonna is larger than life and a huge icon. No argument there. And now even more infamous because of the rumors of her affair with one Alex Rodriguez, aka "A-Rod" (horrible nickname, don't you think?) The timing for this book to hit the stands could not be more perfect, and Ciccone must be a little thrilled, in spite of his love for his sister.

It's not exactly a news flash that Madonna feels she has enough money and power to get away with being as erratic, snotty & ruthless as she feels like, without being restricted by the same social norms we earthlings have to abide by. But for those paying closer attention, her self-discipline, commitment & single-mindedness about her craft, her passions, her health and her success also make her stand apart from 99% of society.

Yes, she's a handful. But I wonder if what really sets her apart might be that, unlike most of us, she has given herself permission to act out whatever/however she feels, not so much that her instincts and passions--good and bad--are all that uncommon, inhuman or perverse. She's also far more disciplined than most people, and that only intensifies the impact of her "living out loud".

Paradoxically, the more of the book I read, the more human Madonna becomes, and less of an enigma. I'm not sure that's what Ciccone had in mind. Maybe it was. But to his credit, he's even-handed about her, which makes the book worth reading.

Rough around the edges in the early years, Madonna is slowly getting more refined with time. Yet she's undoubtedly still full of piss & vinegar. And there are interesting insights (but again, not surprising) in the book, such as the fact that in her personal life, she's not a fan of pornography or sexual deviance, but that the sexual acting-out has always been purely strategic and for shock value. In one passage, she fails to understand a fairly obvious joke Ciccone makes about Guy Ritchie during her wedding toast, and she reportedly looks around the table asking people what her brother meant. This could be interpreted as her blind-spots for her husband---and that may be true. But I can also envision her as sometimes being truly clueless, even childlike.

Say what you want about her, but there are many things I've always admired about the woman since day one. And even after years of her salacious antics and all the eyebrow-raising controversy she's kicked up, those things still remain true for me:

The creative scope & scale of her live performances, her enviably endless energy & discipline, her vast creative hunger and the discipline to bring her vision to life, her legendary ability to always reinvent herself in truly artful ways (and i mean that in both senses of the word), and her commitment to using her fame to help with AIDS awareness & research and other worthy causes.

Do I feel the same about her crassness & all-too-often cringeworthy antics? Not so much. But you gotta take the good with the bad.

Also, which legend has been without a "dark" side?
Michelangelo? Alexander the Great? Johnny Cash? Marilyn? Sinatra? Michael Jackson? Judy Garland?

Okay, maybe Audrey Hepburn, but I (please don't hate me) don't think of her as nearly as prolific or doggedly driven as Madonna.

My point is that since the beginning of time, highly creative AND driven artists also have had--and publicly exhibited--a strong dark side.

Greek mythology calls it the 'Daemon', and it refers to the extreme desire for living and understanding, as well as self-doubt, that is part and parcel of the artist archetype.

Whether it's drinking, drugs, promiscuity, violence, depression or food, it often results in some kind of notoriety and public scorn.

I haven't always followed Madonna's career. I loved her when she debuted her self-titled [first] album, then she lost me with 'Like a Virgin". Oh, how i hate that silly song! Many times i just felt she had gotten too ridiculous or trashy to enjoy, and lost interest in her work altogether. But her 'Blonde Ambition' tour captured & inspired me once more (except, again, for that goofy song & her bouncing around to it on the bed. Oy.) Until recently, I was diggin' her, all through 'Ray of Light', then she lost me again with both her new look and her songs. The whole dance-floor & disco theme felt so... tired, especially when compared to the whole look & sounds that she single-handedly brought to the 80s. But the Confessions tour was still captivating, not just because of the great dancers and Madonna's own strong stage presence, but because, in her 40s, Madonna seemed to have become more human. More accessible somehow. She turns 50 this year, and think it's exactly her every-changing and growing persona that keeps her, her act and her projects so engaging after all these years. Think about it: How many entertainers have stayed this fresh & current for 25+ years?

And regardless of all the tough talking---all the trash talking even---she still strikes me as profoundly vulnerable. And not a little sad.

By the way, shifting gears for a moment, my favorite video of Madonna's early career is 'Borderline'. I still love that song/video, her look in it, as well as the art direction and the way it was shot. To me that's the real Madonna.
(But then again, is there a real Madonna?!)

Well... I'll let you know how the book ends ;)

But seriously, those two need to make up already. Madonna is "devastated" by the book, some magazines claim. I can imagine. But then, I can also imagine her shrugging it off, or basking in the spotlight of her renewed infamy, especially as she's in the middle of her 'Sticky & Sweet' tour. As the saying goes, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Bottom line is: Life is way too short. And there seems to be too much love between those two to throw away over ego. Or money.

Madonna, please apologize for all the atrocious things you've done to your brother. And mean it. And stop doing stuff like that to people. It's rotten and no amount of fame or money justifies it. Plus, remember: Karma really is a boomerang. You're turning 50 this year, so this might be a good turning point.

And please put your money where your famous mouth is. You have plenty of it, and your family should not have to live hand-to-mouth while you make more money than God. Not that you should give handouts just because you're uber-rich (but then, why not? isn't that what money's for?), but that you should have always paid him the market rate. Or something close to it. Clearly you liked his work. So make up for all the underpayments, if nothing else.

And Mrs. Ritchie Rich: Stop being such a penny-pincher. The well isn't about to dry out (how much money do you need anyway?) Stinginess is a truly unattractive quality. It does not become you.

Oops, they did it again. Major retail outlets are sexualizing young girls. This past spring, Kmart sold cropped sweatpants flashing the words “True Love Waits” across the derriere. The pants are no longer available in stores or online, but they have reignited the debate on how we’re dressing our children.

Whether they are wearing it or stating it, are we pimping our youth with sexual messaging? And if so, who is to blame?

Parents have long been dealing with the problem most recently tagged the “Britney Syndrome.” While the pop princess and her counterparts Beyoncé, Christina and Jessica have been pegged for corrupting American youth, it seems every decade has an icon who challenges our fashion tastes.

For my generation, it was Madonna. I remember longing to emulate the Material Girl’s netted, cut-off tops, lacy tights, short skirts and rubber bracelets. I begged and pleaded with my mother to let me do so. I could be super cool, and dance just like Madonna, if only I could bare my stomach with a midriff top. But my mum firmly said, “No.” Go figure — I was only 10.

I always wanted to be that girl. . . you know, the one that men adored. I wanted them to fawn over

I always wanted to be that girl. . . you know, the one that men adored. I wanted them to fawn over me, take care of me, defer to me, and look at me with the bright eyes of love. I imagined men fighting over my attention at my senior prom. Didn't happen (they were too busy looking for someone whose self-esteem and sexual inhibitions were lower than theirs was.)

I imagined myself in coffee shops with good-looking male graduate students stunned by my literary insights. Never happened (they were too busy being stunned by their own literary insights--and often their own reflection in the mirror.)

I imagined myself as the Marilyn Monroe/Madonna gal being picked up and carried around the room by a bunch of good looking men in tuxedos while I wore diamonds, a sexy pink dress, and a big bow on my butt!

It never really worked out that way. I had a lot of gay male friends (some of whom were even dancers), but it always seemed like I was a big, clunky, loud, smart woman who just wasn't of interested to large groups of heterosexual men anywhere. They always seemed a bit threatened by me.

But then I met a man who thought I was interesting and pretty. I thought he was pretty interesting, too, so we got married (and I got to wear pretty jewelry and a big white bow on my butt! There were even men in tuxedos.) My judgment was great, because my husband is a jewel who likes to read, likes monogamy, is sweet, funny, serious, and a good friend. I call him the Comic Book King.

The two of us stopped reading and watching movies long enough to produce twin boys a few years ago (Thing 1 and Thing 2). In addition, for the past few years, my college age nephews have lived in the same town and stop by regularly to eat, and The Comic Book King's father stays with us often to help with Thing 1 and Thing 2. Even our neurotic pug (the medicated wonder dog) is male.

One day in a moment of 1980's nostalgia, I caught sight of that old Madonna video and realized two important things:

Not only are the guys carrying on with Madonna in that video in no way heterosexual, but I have at least that many gay male friends who would be perfectly happy to don tuxedos and dance with me (in fact, except for the pink dress, that's pretty much what happened at the last wedding I attended) and

I have 6 1/2 males at any given time who follow me around the house (the dog has been fixed, hence the 1/2).

I have arrived. I am *that* girl. The Victorians referred to an "Angel of the House." I believe that I am the 21st American version of that.

Eat your heart out, Madonna!
