Let's go to today's action and find the man of the day... IVAN LJUBICIC!!!

Why, you say? Firstly he was down 2-0 against the 4th best clay player, the robotic Davydenko. Second, he has fallen down from top 3-4 to #30 very fast and with no good results to show in recent time. Third, he is one of the BIG guys with the big serve as main weapon. History shows that these guys succeed more on hard courts and grass. Fact of the matter is Ljubi played great tennis, few errors and made Davydenko come up with the good stuff. He wasn't able anymore after the first two sets, and Ivan took over. Great match, great setting and a great result for the big guy from Croatia. Kinda the only surprise left, apart from Chardy in the last 16.

Gonzalez did the same thing today, but you would excpect him to play a lot better than what he showed during the first two sets. Gonzo is a rollercoaster of another dimension and needs stability to get a big title. Wawrinka playing his best is perhaps not as good as Gonzo playing his best. That's why Gonzo won, I think.

Verdasco-Nadal (bye bye Verdasco. never beaten him, never even close, except for once on grass..Nadal in 3 I'm afraid)

Murray got through Lopez in 2, which didn't sound easy, but Lopez might be one spaniard who probably doesn't favor a clay court over a faster harder one. I think Volandri will pose a greater threat to Murray in the next round. Kohlschreiber took out Acasuso, Tipsy downed Mathieu in 3, Ancic set up Nadal clash, and Ferrero got Llodra after being in trouble with poor tennis for 1 set.

En tanto, el francés, Gael Monfils derrotó al español, Fernando Verdasco, por 7-5 6-4 y se convirtió en el primer galo en avanzar a la segunda ronda, donde enfrentará al ganador del match que se disputará mañana entre su compatriota, Sebastien Grosjean y el croata, Ivo Karlovic.

I may be the only person to say this but I think a possible upset could be on the cards.  Djokovic will without a doubt not be 100 percent going into this match which gives every chance to the rising star from South Africa. As I say every week winners of tournaments the week before do not have sufficient recovery time and although Djokovic is of a different class to Anderson, fatigue could beat him here. Anderson was runner up in Las Vegas in early March playing seven matches to get there and eventually lost to Sam Querrey in three sets. This shows he has a bit of quality and stamina at the top level. Do not get me wrong, this match is not going to be 61 62 whitewash but Anderson may be able to steal a victory in three sets as Djokovic tires.

 Richard Gasquet FRA (8) - Dmitry Tursunov RUS (35)

The head to head for this year stands at 1-1 and this match could go either way. The stylish Frenchman is one of my favourite players but he can suffer lapses of concentration and go into his shell when losing. Tursunov's 'go for broke' power game is very unique on the tour and you never know quite what your going to get. Some matches he'll make 100 errors and in others he'll be unplayable. Both players have not been on the best form as of late and I fancy the well rested Tursunov to blast Gasquet off the court.

 Juan Martin Del Potro ARG (65) - Feliciano Lopez ESP (33)

I have come across a few people on the internet tipping Del Potro for this match and I think they are very wrong. I agree that Lopez can be unpredictable at times but when he plays well, he is virtually unstoppable. I really feel Lopez can reach a much higher level than Del Potro who actually leads the head to head 2-0. The last time they played was in October 2007  where Lopez was off form and lost in straight sets however he came into his own this year in Dubai where he showed just how good he can be only losing to Roddick in the final.

Predicted winner : Lopez

 Ivan Ljubicic CRO (24) - Fabrice Santoro FRA (49)

 Every match Ljubicic plays now I always think of a quote from a tennis commentator: "The Ljubicic star had faded." He won a couple of matches last week against Cilic and Robredo but lost easily to Federer who was clearly not 100 percent. The pair played at this tournament last year when Ljubicic, ranked 7 prevailed in three sets. A year on and Ljubicic is not the player he was and I can see the tricky Frenchman who caused Djokovic a bit of trouble in Dubai chopping his way to victory here.

Rafael Nadal tiene una oportunidad de oro para resarcirse de su derrota en las semifinales del pasado Abierto de Australia ante Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Y es que el francés ha vuelto a cruzarse en el camino del nº 2 del mundo, esta vez en el primer Masters Series de la temporada, el de Indian Wells. El de Manacor, que ha solventado sin problemas sus partidos ante Giraldo (6-3 y 6-3) y Young (6-1 y 6-3), comienza ahora su verdadera defensa del título conseguido hace un año. Tsonga es un rival muy complicado, aunque ya no debería de sorprender a nadie. Otro que marcha firme en el torneo californiano es Roger Federer. El suizo ha vuelto a gustarse y está como loco por levantar un nuevo trofeo, el primero de 2008. De momento, no ha tenido rivales peligrosos, aunque el español García-López le jugó de tú a tú. Al que sí que le tocó la china fue a Fernando González, que tuvo que estrenarse ante Ancic, el mismo que perdió anoche ante el otro superviviente español, Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Feliciano López debe de estar estirándose de los pelos después de ver lo poco que necesitó Nadal para deshacerse de Donald Young en el partido correspondiente a la tercera ronda. 'Feli', que partía como el último cabeza de serie, no supo cómo ganar al joven jugador estadounidense a pesar de que volvió a funcionarle el servicio. Es cierto que Young estuvo irreconocible ante el mallorquín, parecía un flan. De hecho, estuvo a punto de encajar un rosco en el primer set. Pero claro, es lo que tiene jugar en la pista central por primera vez ante un tenista como Nadal. Ya lo sufrió en la pasada edición del torneo Novak Djokovic. El serbio perdió el primer parcial de la final por un contundente 6-2.

Además de la eliminación de Fernando González en su primer partido, también hubo otras sorpresas. La más sonada fue la derrota de Andy Roddick ante Tommy Haas (6-4 y 6-4), verdugo a su vez del español Fernando Verdasco la pasada madrugada. El de Nebraska, que partía como uno de los favoritos tras su triunfo en Dubai, se despidió a las primeras de cambio ante un jugador alemán que comienza a ser el que era antes de la lesión. En cuanto a los españoles, sorprendió el adiós de Nicolás Almagro. El murciano, que eligió (con éxito) hacer la gira latinoamericana de tierra, quizás acusó el cambio de superficie ante un rival, el francés Mahut, que no demostró nada en su cruce de tercera ronda ante Roger Federer.

Además de Nadal, la 'Armada' tiene a otro representante en los octavos de final de Indian Wells. Se trata de Juan Carlos Ferrero, que conseguía una más que trabajada victoria ante el croata Mario Ancic. Eran en torno a las 2 y media de la madrugada de hoy (hora española) cuando el valenciano aprovechaba su primera bola de partido al saque para imponerse en el tie-break del tercer set (7-5, 4-6 y 7-6) y celebrar el triunfo tras tres horas de encuentro. Los emparejamientos de cuarta ronda son los siguientes: Federer-Ljubicic, Murray-Haas, Fish-Hewitt, Ferrero-Nalbandián; Nadal-Tsonga, Blake-Gasquet, Djokovic-Cañas y Wawrinka-Lee.

Anabel Medina se despide en octavos

En el cuadro femenino, ya sólo quedan ocho tenistas de cara a la final del domingo. La principal favorita para hacerse con el título, la serbia Ana Ivanovic, no ha tenido demasiados problemas hasta ahora, salvo en su partido de octavos frente a la italiana Schiavone, ante la que tuvo que remontar un set (2-6, 7-5 y 6-2). La segunda cabeza de serie, la rusa Svetlana Kuznetsova también ha solventado sus tres compromisos con relativa comodidad. Otra jugadora a tener en cuenta es la campeona en 2007, la eslovaca Daniela Hantuchova, que se deshizo en su último encuentro de la india Mirza. Por último, la única representante española, Anabel Medina, cayó ayer ante la nº 4 del mundo, la serbia Jelena Jankovic (6-3 y 6-3), después de conseguir dos victorias: ante Kudryavtseva y Rodina. Los cruces de cuartos son los siguientes: Ivanovic-Zvonareva, Jankovic-Davenport; Hantuchova-Sharapova y Radwanska-Kuznetsova.

Tsonga kom til finalen i Australian Open, Nishikori vant finalen i Delray Beach mot James Blake. I dag: Sergiy Stakhovsky slo Ivan Ljubicic i finalen i Zagreb. Ljubicic spilte sin tredje strake finale i turneringen som går i hjemlandet Kroatia. Ljubicic er ranket 25 i verden, men har vært helt oppe på 3. plass.

Sergiy Stakhovsky er ranket 209, og kom inn i turneringen som en lucky loser. Det vil si en spiller som ikke klarer å kvalifisere seg til spill, men som får sjansen likevel fordi en av de andre spillerne trekker seg. Da Michael Llodra ble skadet, steppet Stakhovsky inn. Han er den første lucky loser som vinner en ATP-turnering siden 1991. Dette er merkelige tider.

Nishikori, Tsonga og Stakhovsky. Jesus hadde neppe tennis i tankene da han sa at de siste skal bli de første, men etter disse resultatene i vinter, er jeg ikke sikker lenger.

I'm not too impressed with Zagreb either unfortunately. Apart from Ljubicic, who needs to win this tournament if he wants to go back upwards, there are few players who I would watch. There are three though. The Croats Ancic, Cilic and Tipsarevic. How good are they and is Ancic on his way back to the top 10? Is Cilic the new young gun? Can Tipsarevic get his first title? In addition to Ljubicic, I think these are the favorites to win. 3 from Croatia and one from Serbia. One thing is for sure, they all want this title.

Memhis is according to the 2009 changes probably the more prestigous of the three. But here too, the field is far from impressive. After Blake pulled out, Roddick remains the only top 10 player. Favorite? You bet! The only real threat, and I mean REAL threat, is Tommy Haas. Last year he gave Roddick something to think about in the final where he humiliated Roddick in front of his home crowd. Although sometimes it seems like Tommy is the local hero in Memphis. He seems to treat it like his second home. But Roddick will have to face Fish again to get to a potential Haas final.

Ah well... this is still a sleep in progress week, as we all wait for DU-freakin'-BAI next week. This year it represents a mini-Grand Slam, with the strongest field ever. Goody!

Si hace una semana Andy Murray lograba su segundo título en este 2008, esta vez ha sido Michaël Llodra el que ha conseguido el mismo gran resultado tras ganar en Rotterdam. El galo, habitual pareja de dobles de Clement, y Soderling se plantaron en la final a pesar de que el torneo contó de inicio con la presencia de cinco Top-10, entre los que se encontraba Rafael Nadal. El de Manacor desperdició una gran oportunidad de recortar puntos a Federer en su lucha por el nº 1 de la ATP. En Buenos Aires y en San José triunfaron los tenistas locales. David Nalbandián se reencontró con la victoria ante su compatriota Acasuso, mientras que Andy Roddick hizo lo propio frente al checo Stepanek en la ciudad estadounidense. Por su parte, Nuria Llagostera inauguró en Bogotá el palmarés español al derrotar a la argentina Salerni por 6-0 y 6-4. La balear asciende hasta el puesto nº 74 de la WTA.

A pesar de que el torneo de Rotterdam contaba con el mejor cuadro, el jueves se despidieron los últimos cuatro cabezas de serie y el público holandés se quedó sin favoritos. Murray, que venía de conseguir el título en Marsella, se vio sorprendido en primera ronda por el jugador local Haase. Pero la debacle tuvo lugar en octavos, cuando Nadal (en tres sets ante Seppi), Davydenko, Ferrer y Berdych también se marchaban a casa. A la final llegaron Robin Soderling y Michaël Llodra. El francés, que había comenzado el 2008 con un triunfo en Adelaida, aprovechó esta segunda oportunidad en poco más de un mes para sumar su tercer título ATP al vencer por 6-7, 6-3 y 7-6. Los 22 'aces' del sueco no fueron suficientes para evitar la derrota. Llodra, que desde este lunes aparecerá entre los 40 mejores del circuito, demostró que no sólo es un buen jugador de dobles, modalidad en la que ha conseguido 13 premios, entre ellos tres Grand Slams.

Deslumbró con su tenis en los Masters Series de Madrid y París. Hubo quienes se lamentaron de su ausencia en la Masters Cup de Shanghai, competición que no disputó por unos puntos. El argentino David Nalbandián simplemente no había estado entre los ocho mejores de la temporada por su falta de regularidad. Este año ha tardado en arrancar, aunque lo ha hecho en casa, ante su gente, en Buenos Aires. Él era el máximo favorito y se encargó de demostrarlo partido tras partido, hasta en la final. En ella se topó con su compañero José Acasuso. No se lo puso fácil 'Chucho'. Le obligó a darle la vuelta a un 0-1 y a disputarse el segundo set en un tie-break del que salió airoso. En la tercera manga, una ruptura de Nalbandián fue suficiente para consumar la remontada: 3-6, 7-6 y 6-4.

Después de que Blake perdiera hace una semana la final de Delray Beach, el público estadounidense quería ver la primera victoria de los suyos en la gira norteamericana. Y llegó en el torneo de San José, en cuyo cuadro destacaban los nombres de Roddick, Blake y Haas. Fue el de Nebraska el único que llegó a semifinales, donde se las vio con Guillermo García-López. El buen momento del albaceteño (que es el nuevo nº 58) no fue suficiente para frenar a un jugador local que, por otra parte, bajó de las nubes al japonés Nishikori en segunda ronda. Ya en la final, se encontró con Radek Stepanek, al que superó por 6-4 y 7-5. La clave del choque fue que Roddick aprovechó dos de las cinco oportunidades que tuvo de romper el saque del checo. Con este triunfo, el estadounidense suma su vigésimo cuarto título profesional, el primero en esta campaña.

Tomorrow a few matches i think will be exciting :

Mahut vs. Gabashvili : Neither one of these players cannot be considered as a great player (No. 42 and No. 132 in the ATP rankings), but both players have shown good tennis in the last 2 weeks. I think this one will go to Nicolas Mahut.

Nadal vs Tursunov. It is interesting that these 2 player did not meet before, despite the fact that both players have been in the top ATP players for a while now. Nadal is playing his first match since the loss against Tsonga at the Australian Open. He looked good, but Tsonga was just great. Tursunov is a player i never knew how to predict. For instance, this year he won at Sydney, facing some tough opponents (Wawrinka, Gasquet, Grosjean, Santoro and Guccione), but afterwards lost in Melbourne against Sam Querrey, before losing to young Victor Troicki in the Davis Cup. To win a match against Nadal you have to be consistent and self-confident, because it is going to be a fight, and i don't think Tursunov is up to the task.

Berdych vs Ljubicic. This is a match made to be played indoors, both players being great in these conditions. Ljubicic started well this season, reaching the semifinal at Doha, but then lost all 3 matches at Kooyong before losing to Dutch player Robin Haase in the first round at the Australian Open. Berdych on the other hand has proven to be a consistent player. He does not defeat great players but does not lose against modest ones. His ranking may be a bit high in my opinion (12 in the ATP ranking), but i still think he will win this one.

Michael Youzhny is the defending champion in Rotterdam, and seed No 4. The Russian does not seem to have a difficult preview before the Quarterfinals, where it's possible for him to meet Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero (No. 7 seed).

The No. 1 seed in Rotterdam is Spaniard Raffael Nadal. This side of the draw seems to be one of the toughest, with player like Dmitry Tursunov (Nadal's opponent in the first round), Llayton Hewitt, Andreas Seppi, Nieminen, Verdasco and Baghdatis (the No. 8 seed and Marseille semifinalst). This Quarterfinal is the toughest on to predict, because there are a lot of good players, and most of them are on a good streak.

Another tough Quarterfinal to predict is the one in wich No. 3 seed, David Ferrer and seed No. 5, Berdych are involved. Ferrer will meet Ljubicic in the first round, in a match i think the Spaniard will win. A player to watch right here is German Phillip Kohlschreiber. He has a 10-2 record this year, showing a good tennis so far. Also present in this part of the draw is big server Ivo Karlovic, who will meet Oliver Rochus in the first round. I personally am considering a Berdych - Ferrer semifinal, but Kohlschreiber and Ljubicic are not to be underestimated.

The easiest quarterfinal to predict should be the lower one. Andy Murray is the No. 6 seed, and i don't think he will have too many problems reaching the quarterfinal, where i think he will meet Nikolai Davydenko, the second seed here in Rotterdam.

No es que esta semana haya brillado por su espectáculo tenístico, pero no ha estado mal para empezar. El objetivo de estos torneos no es otro que el de ponerse a punto para la temporada, pero principalmente para el Open de Australia que comienza en apenas siete días. No sabemos de qué forma llegarán al primer Grand Slam del año jugadores como Jelena Jankovic. La serbia arriesgó su físico en una Copa Hopman que ganó en el partido de dobles la pareja estadounidense. Están que lo tiran los americanos. Uno de mis favoritos para este año, Murray, sí que empezó fuerte el 2008. Ganó el torneo de Doha y, de paso, un buen puñado de dólares. El torneo de Adelaida no es que prometiera mucho desde el principio, pero lo cierto es que contó con una final de poco nombre. Llodra fue el que se llevó el gato al agua. A priori, la final más interesante fue la de Chennai. Lo malo es que Nadal no estaba para muchos trotes después del maratón del sábado y cedió claramente ante Youzhny.

Empezaré por el torneo indio, que es sobre el que más puedo hablar. El ruso Mikhail Youznhy derrotó en la final a Rafa Nadal, y lo hizo con la contundencia que refleja el resultado: 6-0 y 6-1. Pero no es que el de Manacor se haya olvidado de jugar al tenis (no lo quiera Dios), sino simplemente que acusó el duro partido de semifinales ante Carlos Moyá (6-7, 7-6 y 7-6). Después de 3 horas y 54 minutos (el partido más largo de tres sets en los últimos 15 años), Nadal no estaba como para ofrecer su mejor cara ante un jugador, el ruso, que en pista dura es muy peligroso. Al nº 2 le faltó agresividad, le faltaron fuerzas. Al resto no existió; sólo cinco puntos y ninguna bola de break. El 6-0 llegó en poco más de 20 minutos. Nada más comenzar el segundo set, Rafa conseguía su único juego del encuentro para empatar a uno. En el cuarto, cuando sacaba para igualar a dos, el juez de silla mandó repetir un punto de Nadal que terminó por hundir al mallorquín.

En Qatar, Andy Murray estrenaba el año con un título. Venció en la final disputada el sábado por 6-4, 4-6 y 6-2 al suizo Stanislas Wawrinka. La pasada edición, tras superar a Davydenko en semifinales (al igual que esta vez), perdía ante Ljubicic. Pero el viernes el croata se vio frenado precisamente por Wawrinka en el penúltimo escalón del cuadro. Tras 2 horas y 28 minutos de juego, Murray se hacía con el cuarto título ATP de su carrera.

En tierras australianas, Michael Llodra daba la sorpresa y se imponía a Nieminen por 6-3 y 6-4. El francés, nº 93 del mundo, accedió al cuadro principal después de la baja de última hora de su compatriota Gasquet y aprovechó el regalo para sumar el segundo triunfo en su cuenta particular. Como dato, cabe destacar que Llodra no perdió el saque en todo el torneo. Por cierto, Hewitt sigue sin ganar en casa.

Y, también en Australia, Estados Unidos alzó la Copa Hopman tras derrotar en la final a Serbia por 2-1. La pareja formada por Serena Williams y Mardy Fish no tuvo excesivos problemas para conseguir la victoria, a pesar del pundonor de Djokovic. El serbio igualó la final tras la no comparecencia de su compañera Jankovic en el primer partido de la eliminatoria. Tras un partido largo, cuyo resultado fue de 6-2, 6-7 y 7-6, los serbios (esta vez sí con Jelena, aunque fuera de figurín), cayeron en el dobles frente a Serena y Fish por 7-6 y 6-2.

In Doha, we will get some nice action. Davydenko will have to come up with some solutions against the magician Santoro. Santoro almost always plays close matches and this should be one of those too. If Davydenko gets a fairly high number of unforced Santoro will take it. Regardless of future predictions, it will be a good one.

Remember Tipsarevic? Defeated Gonzo in Wimbledon last summer? He will go against def.champ Ljubicic. I haven't followed Tipsarevic closely since Wimbledon, but I haven't seen anything impressive since then. Ljubicic is the favorite in every which way, but Ljubicic is far from where he was one year ago. At #3.

In Adelaide, a little ahead time-wise... players are ready for QFs. The one match I would look at is the newcomer battle of Gulbis-Tsonga. They're 0-0 h2h and predicting the winner is a perfect gamble. Tsonga is seeded 6th, Gulbis is just short of a seeding. If these kids play their best tennis, it should be the one to watch today.(tomorrow)
