Getting LightScribe To Work In Ubuntu Hardy Heron

LightScribe:

VitalBodies installed a DVD burner in our new Lenovo D10 Workstation but had not attempted to setup LightScribe in Ubuntu. LightScribe allows you to burn a label on your disk rather than using a pen or label. Why burn a label? Some pens, over time, can eat right through the disk and damage your data. Some labels will throw the disk (spinning at high RPM) off balance.

Vitalbodies did some research and testing and here is what worked for us.

Odd Anomalies:

VitalBodies got disks to burn and everything works. There were a few Anomalies along the way. Like trying to start the software using the menus did not work until we rebooted.

EDIT: I had just burned a label with LightScribe for this blog article. I did not need to add data to the disk as I was just checking the label burner. I flipped the disk to the data side for whenever the next data burn might be and thus BROKE Nautilus. Turns out you could get a SEGMENT FAULT error from this command:

sudo nautilus
Initializing nautilus-share extension
Segmentation fault

Removed the blank disk and that FIXED Nautilus.

Just a side note: This error does not happen with the disk label side down but only data side down.

In other words, only when the data side is towards the laser.

I wondered if this only happens with blank disks?

Answer, yes...

Suggestions:

VitalBodies burned a disk and it came out light (low contrast) so we burned the same disk again to increase the contrast. Looks great. The original image was low contrast. Consider higher contrast text and imagery for better results. VitalBodies made a new GIMP and Inkscape template for burning. The image at the top is from the new template.

Other Alien Possibilities If All Else Fails:

VitalBodies wants to thanks the helpful folks on the Ubuntu forums and everyone that made LightScribe on Linux possible.

Flash drives are nearly indispensable for educators. I'm always amazed at the number of teachers wanting to borrow mine. Sure our school has storage on the server and I even have my own internet storage location, but nothing works better to quickly move data, especially students' work, from one computer to another than a small USB drive.

I have had my emails containing my lesson plans delayed in transit, and our server has gone down one too many times. I do carry a great Lacie external drive, but I really like a small flash drive for simple transfer operations. Atom looks like a great companion.

Not only is Atom incredibly small, it has an aluminum shell, password protection feature, and more. Great for taking important documents from room to room, building to building, computer lab, or even home. If you seeking employment the drive is great place to keep your resume' and teaching portfolio.

I have a flash drive on a lanyard that I use with our computer lab when a student cannot save, having other problems, or in rare cases needs to take something home to finish.

Works with Mac or PC. (Special features for Vista Users included.) Prices start at $18 for a 1GB and end at $100 for an 8GB. (4GB and 4GB also available.)

Wired Educator Recommendation: I'm getting one!

Kira-kira beda 200 ribuan lah. Yaa, jadi bisa dikatan LaCie ini barang premium seperti halnya komputer Apple dibandingkan PC.

Ayo kita bandingkan LaCie dengan HD lainnya :)

(dari kiri : Seagate Free Agent Go, LaCie Little Disk, Maxtor One Touch Mini 4)

Keliatan jelaskan?

Emang sih garansi cuman 2 tahun sedangkan kedua harddisk lainnya 5 tahun. Tapi perasaan barang apa2 masuk Indonesia garansi jadi 1 tahun deh kecuali garansi internasional ^ ^. Kingston saya aja yang tulisannya life-time waranty ditulis dibonnya cuman garansi 1 tahun <_<.

Ahora, escribe: sudo dpkg -- force-architecture -i [nombre del archivo]

sudo cp /usr/lib/liblightscribe.so /usr/lib32

Y esta otra

sudo cp /usr/liblightscribe.so.1 /usr/lib32

Para correr el programa solo escribe...

sudo 4L-gui y listo...

Saludos

This is the LaCie Golden Disk. It is a stunning 500GB External HDD which you can plug n' play with a PC or Mac. It's not stunning because it's 500GB, which is nothing compared to 1TB monsters out there, but because it literally dazzles you. The freakin' thing SHINES. It's a smooth gold colour all over, with an actual small percentage of real gold. The distortion you see is caused by this wave on its surface, as the top is not flat.

Designed by Ora Ito, a young European industrial designer so revered people even want to buy his imaginary products.

I just wanted something she could put to good use. It was a bonus it looks realllly glam. I would've just settled for some plain looking one were it not for Bri, so thanks Bri. Well I'm happy she's happy. It's a change from always feeling the way I feel.

I'm glad she enjoyed her weekend at my place.

I caught Lacie's band fine-fifteen at Quality Seafood. They were great- the food was yummy. I have lived in Austin since '89 and I haven't been to this place. I liked the seafood gumbo. And the banjo player.

Later they played at the Carousel lounge.

My 2004 Titanium G4 laptop is not feeling so well. It's very sick spitting up and quitting programs daily. Two weeks ago I bought a new back-up Lacie USB2 500GB external hard drive (left) to assist the 2004 Lacie firewire 80GB external hard drive (right) and the hundreds of CD's I have burned as it has only 1.36GB left on it to store digital files on.

To put it plainly one of my little 2.5 by 3.5 inch miniatures scanned at 800dpi is 30MB to 45MB in size. Add to that number the a working file of 40MB to 50MB plus the web, print and pdf files for each scan. Burning CD's as back-up is futile! And I do not own a DVD burner.

I do not store much music; perhaps 6GB at most. As I begin the daunting but enjoyable task of scanning and creating ready-to-print files of my original artwork the firewire drive has all but filled up. And my 60GB computer filled up quickly to.

And I know what happens when you do not back-up your files. In 2001 I lost (no my ex-husband lost) one full year's worth of design and illustration freelance work while he was re-formatting the drive of MY computer. I will never never never never never let that happen again nor will I ever ever ever let anyone other than myself touch my computer.

This is how I make my living people. It costs money to buy these things. And when you lose a year's worth of work in the blink of an eye... I had to decide quickly whether to buy the newest version of OSX as I still work on OSX10.9 (Panther) or buy a hard drive. The hard drive won of course. :)

Today, I begin the scary task of wiping clean then re-installing the operating system and software for my laptop. I am keeping it clean this time; the Adobe CS package and Firefox. I haven't reformatted in two years and when I did it then, my laptop cried in exhaltation and the software was happy working toegther side by side co-existing and multi-tasking. I'm tired of photoshop quitting mid-color correction, inDesign freezing, files disappearing as though they were never created and firefox mixing things up. Worst of all I've been getting this little sheer multi-lingual black screen pop-up saying shut your computer down now all the while the screen slowly fading from the top right corner inwards, spreading grey, grey... lightening white.

So I'm shutting my computer down NOW. All the back-up and praying I can do is done. Wish me luck. Hope to see you later this evening.

As I’m taking part in Food 2.0 this Sunday, I went to do a little research at a place in Londo

As I'm taking part in Food 2.0 this Sunday, I went to do a little research at a place in London called Vanilla Black, perhaps one of my favourite places to eat an unsuitable amount of food. Here's the first part of the review I posted:

Gasp!! Gourmet Vegetarian food that even carnivores are satisfied by? Tasty veggie delights that your tongue will treasure for weeks to come? Vanilla Black is out-of-the-way in Chancery Lane, but only 3 mins walk from the tube - a blessing if you're bored with fighting through Soho and fancy a change. This destinational eaterie is a heavenly escape from the usual bland veggie options that I've become resigned to.... check out the rest here: Vanilla Black

I'm partnered with the lovely Tiara Diamond and we are planning a vegetarian feast of fabulous flavours. We spent quite some time going through what we ate and didn't eat - turns out that both of us have a fear of raisins as well as a startling amount of "no-go" food areas. After writing out a "hate list" followed by a "love list" we decided upon Mushroom Menage on Summer Rosti with Fresh Asparagus as a main course, followed by Toffee Apple Meringue pie. The starter will be a tricolore salad with Honeyed Balsamic Dressing. It's going to be mad because I'll have just finished a 24-hour stint on telly, and will be ravenous.

Meanwhile, I got a lovely Lacie Lightscribe drive to play with in the post today, installed like a dream on my Mac, it's almost enough for me to consider defecting from Vista, all this plug-and-play business... but I must confess, it's weird not having that right-click for tweakage. I'm very clearly straddling two camps here, as it were.

This drive is both PC and Mac compatible so happily I don't have to choose yet. Now I must fight the temptation to lightscribe a naughty word on to a disc with a laser. Just like old times - I just remembered programming my ZX Spectrum to "speak" words that were typed in - this was many years ago - and a Derek and Clive sketch was chosen as the ultimate test of skill ... but what would you expect from a Red Dwarf fan?*

*only the first 4 series though.
