Kehrwieder an die Spree - aber gerne :-)

Wir sind um 8 Uhr in Berlin gelandet, haben uns am Schalter der Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe gleich mal Tagestickets gekauft und sind mit dem X9-Bus vom Flughafen Tegel zum Bahnhof Zoo gefahren. Hier sind wir in die Buslinie 100 umgestiegen und an der Siegessäule und dem Reichstag vorbei über „Unter den Linden“ bis zum Alexanderplatz gefahren. Schneller wäre das per S-Bahn gewesen, aber vom Bus aus sieht man viel mehr von Berlin.

Am Alexanderplatz sind wir zum Fernsehturm gegangen, mit dem Lift bis in 203 Meter Höhe gefahren und ganz Berlin lag uns morgens um neun schon zu Füßen.

Hier schaut man über den Berliner Dom (der seit Dienstag wieder sein goldenes Kuppelkreuz hat) Richtung „Unter den Linden“, Brandenburger Tor und Tiergarten.

Als wir eine Stunde später wieder unten waren, gab es schon eine sehr lange Warteschlange vor dem Fernsehturm. Hier lohnt es sich auch, wenn man früh kommt.

Vom Alex aus ging es dann per Bus (Linie 100) über die „Linden“ zum Reichstag, dem Sitz des Deutschen Bundestages. Hier sind wir ausgestiegen, haben die laaaaange Menschenschlage vor dem Reichstag bewundert und haben uns einige Zeit auf der Wiese vor dem Reichstag aufgehalten. Wir hatten Glück mit dem Wetter, es war bewölkt und etwas windig, aber bei ca. 24 °C warm genug, um ohne Jacke auszukommen. 

Hier stehen wir auf den Stufen des Reichstages und schauen über die Menschenschlage hinweg zum Bundeskanzleramt.

Am Reichstag flattern viele Deutschlandfahnen, eine davon hat sich mit dem blauen Himmel in den Fenstern des Reichstages gespiegelt.

Vom Reichstag aus ist es nur ein kurzer Fußweg zum Brandenburger Tor:

Natürlich waren wir da nicht alleine, Menschen aus vielen verschiedenen Ländern waren hier unterwegs. Es ist für mich immer noch sehr bewegend, durch das Brandenburger Tor durchgehen zu können. Wie oft habe ich früher auf der Ost- oder auf der Westseite an der Berliner Mauer gestanden und habe mich gefragt, wie es wohl weitergehen wird mit der Teilung Berlins (und ganz Deutschlands). Ich bin sehr froh, dass die Grenzen nun wieder weg sind und wir uns nun auch innerhalb der Verwandtschaft problemlos gegenseitig besuchen können.

Vom Brandenburger Tor aus sind wir am Hotel Adlon und an der Britischen Botschaft vorbei Richtung „Unter den Linden“ spaziert. Hier haben wir uns bei Häagen Dazs ein Eis geleistet. 4,50 Euro für zwei Kugeln Eis ist ja eigentlich schon etwas verrückt, aber dafür bekommt man sein Eis mit Blick aufs Brandenburger Tor. Das hat ja auch was.

Als nächstes haben wir uns spontan für eine Spreefahrt entschieden. Wir sind mit der U-Bahn zur Friedrichstraße gefahren. Hier am Spreeufer gibt es viele Anbieter, die Spreefahrten unterschiedlicher Dauer anbieten. Wir haben uns für eine einstündige Rundfahrt entschieden. Das war im Nachhinein gesehen ein echtes Highlight unseres Berlin-Tages. Man sitzt auf dem Oberdeck, lässt sich die Berliner Luft um die Nase blasen und bekommt alles erklärt, was da so links und rechts am Ufer an einem vorbeizieht. Zwar waren inzwischen dunkle Wolken aufgezogen, aber nach drei Minuten Regen war alles wieder vorbei. Auf dem oberen Foto sieht man so einen „Spreedampfer“, wie er am Berliner Hauptbahnhof vorbeifährt.

Vom Schiff aus ergeben sich interessante Einblicke, hier zum Beispiel das Gebäude der Nikolaikirche, die zwischen den Häusern auftaucht.

Bei unserer Rundfahrt sind wir am Regierungsviertel, am Reichstag, und Bundeskanzleramt vorbeigekommen. Wir haben die Museumsinsel, den Berliner Dom, die Reste des Palastes der Republik und vieles vieles mehr gesehen.

Am Spreeufer entlang haben wir viele Standcafés und Strandbars gesehen. Am Spreeufer kann man auch schön spazierengehen oder Rad fahren. Radfahrer haben wir sehr viele gesehen in Berlin. Es gibt auch viele Anbieter, die Räder verleihen. 

Natürlich, natürlich waren wir auch an der Gedächtniskirche am Kurfürstendamm. 

Hier am Weltkugelbrunnen „Wasserklops“ vor dem Europacenter lässt es sich gut Pause machen, wie man sieht. Es war nun mittlerweile Nachmittag geworden und wir haben uns hier mit einer Berliner Currywurst gestärkt. In einem Restaurant waren wir nicht, wir haben den Tag über Snacks aus der Hand und Eis gegessen. So haben wir Zeit (und Geld) gespart. Getränke kann man überall kaufen, die leeren Pfandflaschen nehmen die Verkaufsstellen auch immer wieder zurück.

Mia hatte zum Geburtstag Geld bekommen, das sie auf dem Kudamm nun für ihre Geschenke ausgeben durfte.

Anschließend haben wir noch eine Tour mit der Buslinie 200 gemacht. Man kommt an vielen Botschaften vorbei, an der Philharmonie, der Staatsbibliothek, am Potsdamer Platz und so weiter. Die Linien 100 und 200 fahren mit Doppeldeckerbussen und vom oberen Deck aus hat man einen guten Ausblick. Wenn einen etwas interessiert, kann man aussteigen und später mit einem anderen Bus die Fahrt fortsetzen.

Kurz vor 20 Uhr haben wir uns auf den Weg zum Flughafen Tegel gemacht und sind anschließend wieder nach Hause geflogen. Wir hatten ja nur Handgepäck und ich habe vor der Reise den Online-Einchecken von Tuifly genutzt, wir mussten also erst 30 Minuten vor Abflug am Gate sein. 

Unser Tag in Berlin war nicht so teuer: 6,10 Euro und 4,40 Euro für die Fahrkarten. Damit sind wir - egal ob mit Bus, Metro, S- oder U-Bahn - den ganzen Tag unterwegs gewesen, inklusive die Fahrten vom und zum Flughafen Tegel. Und wir waren sehr viel unterwegs, hauptsächlich mit den Buslinien 100 und 200.

Bevor wir nach Berlin gefahren sind, habe ich mich auf der Internetseite der Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe schlau gemacht. Hier kann man Liniepläne, Buslinienpläne, Haltestellenumgebungspläne und vieles mehr herunterladen und man findet alles über Fahrkarten und Preise.

Da wir Berlin ja „von außen“ erkundet haben, haben wir nur die Tickets für den Fernsehturm (zusammen 14 Euro) und die Schiffsfahrt (auch zusammen 14 Euro) bezahlt. Dazu kommt noch Geld für Postkarten, Eis, Snacks und Getränke. Insgesamt sind wir mit nicht ganz 70 Euro ausgekommen. Das geht für einen Tag zu zweit in Berlin, finde ich. Zumindest ist es eine gute Alternative, wenn man keine mehrtägige Reise machen kann oder möchte.

Wir haben sehr viel gesehen, sind sehr viel unterwegs gewesen und haben viele Fotos gemacht. Mia war noch nie zuvor in Berlin. Ihr hat es sehr gut gefallen und wir haben viele schöne Eindrücke mit nach Hause genommen. Mir war es wichtig, dass sie die wichtigsten Stationen unserer Hauptstadt einmal sieht, dass sie durchs Brandenburger Tor geht, dass sie vor dem Reichstag steht, dass die eben sieht, was unsere Hauptstadt ausmacht, wo so viel deutsche Geschichte geschrieben wurde und wird.

Wenn sie etwas älter ist, werden wir ein paar Tage in Berlin verbringen und uns die Stadt intensiver ansehen und erleben. Aber für einen Tag Berlin hat Mia ganz schön viel gesehen. Und ich habe über die vielen Veränderungen gestaunt. Was da in den letzten paar Jahren alles gebaut wurde!. Berlin hat sich verändert, ist aber weiterhin eine Reise wert, finden wir.

Zwar ist der Tauentzien dank etlicher großer Luxus-Einkauspaläste wie dem gigantischen KaDeWe, einer der größten Peek&Cloppenburg-Fililalen sowie Deutschlands erstem Niketown-Store und dem Adidas-Laden noch gut in Takt, doch spätestens der dann folgende Kurfürstendamm hat fast alles von seinem ehemaligen Glanz verloren. Die Renovierung ist also längst überfällig.

Diese neue von der Stadt finanzierte Investition gehört zu der jüngsten Auffrischungs-Kur der City-West. Boomte seit der Wende die gesamte City-Ost bis hin zum Potsdamer Platz, so hat die damals exklusive westliche Innenstadt wenig davon gesehen. Das Blatt hat sich so gewendet - Luxuslabels schmücken sich nun vielmehr mit Flagship-Stores am Potsdamer Platz und in der Friedrichstraße als am Kudamm. Mit dem im Bau befindlichen 118-Meter Hochhaus, dem Zoofenster, dem weltgrößten Riesenrad genau gegenüber und den hoffentlich bald bestätigten Atlas-Tower am Schimmelpfeng-Haus geht es nun endlich auch für die gediegene westliche Innenstadt wieder bergauf.

Sämtliche Aufnahmen wurden auf der Strasse von der S-Bahn-Haltestelle bis nach Hause gemacht, ein Weg von ca. 4 Minuten - und ich habe nicht alle Fotos hier veröffentlicht. Eine Hundehalterin mit Hund sprach mich ungläubig in osteuropäisch gefärbtem Deutsch an: "Was, Sie fotografieren die Kacke?? Ich plädiere ja immer dafür, dass die Leute die Kacke aufnehmen. Das ist guuut, dass sie das machen!"

Naja, obs was nützt? Wohl nicht, aber es ruft mir (und hoffentlich einigen der Blogleser) den Wert von Robidog-Kästen in Erinnerung...

...nur zur Beruhigung: ich bin eigentlich gar nicht so schlecht gelaunt, wie eigentlich mal angekündet für diesen Blog. Aber ein Besucher trat in eine solche Tretmine, und da dachte ich: jetzt ist der Moment gekommen, dieses hässliche Thema mal aufs Tapet zu bringen!

Letzten Freitag, am 18. Juli 2008 hat REPLAY seinen neuen Store in Berlin eröffnet. In der Neue Schönhauser Strasse 3, 10178 Berlin (Mitte) gibt es bereits seit einigen Jahren einen REPLAY-STORE. In dem ehemaligen Berliner Gloria Kino auf dem Kurfürstendamm 12 entstand nun der zweite REPLAY-Flagship-Store in der Hauptstadt. Verkauft werden in dem neuen Store sämtliche Kollektionen von Replay, Replay Accessories, Replay Footwear und We Are Replay.

Die Strasse, an der ich wohne, liegt in der Nähe des Beginns des Kurfürstendamms (oder Ku'damm, wie man ja hier sagt). Eine nette, abgesehen von der Autobahn ruhige Gegend. Natürlich hängt am Balkon meines Zimmers bereits die deutsche Fahne - in Vorbereitung des morgigen Spiels.

Eine kurze Erklärung zum Titelbild des Blogs darf nicht fehlen. Der Berliner Hauptbahnhof, der aus dem ehemaligen Lehrter Stadtbahnhof in Glas und Stahl rausgestampft wurde, bietet seit zwei Jahren einen neuen Eingang in diese Weltstadt. Was für ein Panorama sich da durch die Front bietet: Links der Reichstag, das Parlamentsgebäude; rechts das Kanzleramt, die unter Kohl entworfene unbescheidene Unterkunft und Arbeitsstätte der Bundeskanzlerin und in der Mitte: Die Schweizer Botschaft. Vielleicht einmal in einem anderen Blog etwas mehr darüber, aber gesagt sein muss es schon hier: Wer nach Berlin kommt, sieht als erstes die Schweizer Flagge!:-)

Le week-end dernier, c’était retour à Berlin le temps d’un « krasse » week-end (je cite mon ex-coloc).

Il s’avère que je suis arrivé au début du quart de finale Turquie-Croatie (Euro 2008). J'étais plutôt pour les croates, ce qui était assez osé, étant donné que mes anciens colocataires berlinois vivent dans un quartier à forte connotation turque. La Turquie a égalisé à la dernière minute des prolongations avant de l’emporter aux tirs au but. Cette équipe a quelque chose de magique, avec des joueurs méritant de s'appeler Sylvain ou David. Mes colocs, équipés de drapeaux du vainqueur, étaient ravis, et ont ainsi voulu aller dans la rue. Il m’a fallu 10mn pour comprendre l’énorme intérêt d’une telle expédition : l’appartement était sur la route entre le quartier turc et le lieu traditionnel de liesse populaire, Kurfurstendamm (Ku’damm, prononcé « Koudam » pour les intimes). Placés au bord de la route et agitant des drapeaux turcs, nous avons eu droit à un défilé en règle avec des centaines de voitures affichant fièrement les couleurs du pays. Les klaxons ont hurlé jusqu’à 2h du matin, et la presse parle de 200 000 turcs (!) ayant crié leur amour du football dans les rues.

Il me faut également mentionner la beauté du sport, avec dans ce cas là le mélange des cultures. Mes ex-colocs portaient à la fois les couleurs allemandes et turcs. Il faut évidemment rappeler que les turcs représentent la première minorité en Allemagne. Alors que la prochaine demie-finale est Allemagne-Turquie, nous n’avons pas eu droit à des remarques du type « on va vous battre », mais plutôt des marques de vive sympathie à l’égard de l’Allemagne : « je suis pour l’Allemagne et la Turquie » ; « nous sommes frères et sœurs » ; « vive l’Allemagne » etc. J’avoue que je ne m’y attendais pas forcément. C'était vraiment gratuit et donc touchant. C’est pour ça que j’aime le sport. Certes il y a parfois de la démesure et du n’importe quoi. Mais J’ai passé un très bon moment en voyant tous ces gens partager de la manière la plus simple un moment de bonheur. Et comme j’ai déjà pu le dire dans un autre billet, il est très amusant de constater que cela ne choque personne que la Turquie fasse le championnat d’Europe.

Je finirai en précisant qu’il s’agissait également d’une expérience étrange que d’assister à tant de joie sans pour autant la ressentir. Je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de penser à Raymond. Et à Estelle du coup.

Berlin, Berlin, wir fahren nach Berlin :o)

Because of a business meeting with Jamba, I was once again in Berlin and also had the possibility to a enjoy a teeny city trip. Having beautiful weather and running around from ‘Unter den Linden’, through ‘Tiergarten’ to ‘Kurfürstendamm’, I saw among other things the ‘Fernsehturm’, ‘Humboldt Universität’, 'Brandenburgertor', ‘Reichtag’, ‘Potsdamer Platz’, ‘Sony Center’, ‘Checkpoint Charlie’, ‘Siegessäule’, ‘KaDeWe’, ‘Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche’. The evening view on the roof the Reichtag and the hot chocolate in ‘Reinhards’ at the Kempinski Hotel Bristol were just great :o) 

It so happened that the Berlin House of Representatives – across from the Federal Ministry of Finance – had a open day. So I had a quick look at the office of Walter Momper (the President of the Berlin House of Representatives), at the gallery of honorary citizens of Berlin and inside the plenary hall. Outside they had a big party with live music by police orchestra and varied catering.

Kurfürstendamm, eller Ku'damm er unnagjort så holder. Store deler av lørdagen gikk med til å gå gaten opp, og ned.

KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) ble selfvølgelig besøkt og Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche ble fotografet. Ellers så ble det aviser, kaffe, mat og et par øl på fortausrestauranter. Sløv dag.

I dag, søndag, skal jeg se litt andre ting. Men først frokost...

i shaved only my lower legs, and exfoliated using my scrub towel with some bliss spa sappy soap and lush sandstone from berlin- but they have locations everywhere its a uk based firm. it smells fucking great but melts too fast i reckon and actually has sand on the end.

then i got my bliss body butter on..and put on a pair of long johns.

and if you're wondering, i use a buzzer on my private area. it gets it nice and short clean with no stubble irritation. .. no bonsais up in here.

i'm beginning to wonder if i should take a few day trip back to berlin or lithuania to see my lithuanian princess..

every year valentines day is the same for me. i don't think there's been one year when i had a valentine. yeah, yeah save your pity.

but i saw flights for about $400 jfk to berlin... and i know a few cheap hotels.. close to the s-bahn near the kurf'damm. so it's quite exciting... a chance to see my bebe on valentines! a chance to see if she's for real about hanging out or not. last time we spoke it was new years day... i miss her and her sexy voice and accent. girl has a cute face and a hot body with her real tits and sexy slim ass.

oh god, and this time i can do my signature on her! i sure miss her uncovered blowjobs. i mean the russian girl aka ms exclusive here does it too, but she's just not as good and shes just no comparison to princess. i always showered before and what not. i made sure to be clean for her but never went down on her yet. hygiene is a must in my books.

if all else fails i can go back to the saunaclub... they know me there. the last time i was there, i went vip with my princess and got us a 150€ bottle of moet and snuck in her a lush bubble flower and used a bit in the jacuzzi. before that i sipped on her and her girlfriends vueve cliquot in the club... went back to the hotel quite sloshed...plus had the flight next day. i sure miss her. she's quite sweet, a good listener, off the hook in bed... and i can ask her to wear her stilettos! did i mention i was a super freak?

i will sms her tomorrow morning which will be afternoon there.. maybe i need to get away again. i get very excited in these excursions. particularly if they involve my princess! it's not even far away, i got to decide soon!

berlin has quite a nice art scene, hot deutsch babes, good food... i love zillemarkt by savignyplatz. pork fat crunch on bread- mmm! butter is for babies.

i think i should do it... beats another fuckin' valentines day home.

I am sure that everybody by now knows,  that I went to Berlin to check out some basics. So here is my final suggestions based on that trip, but first let me do a short sum up.

The Polls

I have used the polls as a kind of group briefing. Most people have wanted a light program or no program at all. Concerning accommodation, people have stated that it would be ok to stay in the same area of town, and not necessarily at the same hotel.

I hope my suggestions later on will reflect both these lines of wishes.

Hotel Criteria

As this project grew, I found that we did no only need some beds to sleep in, but a basic criteria was that the hotel also has some areas that we could use for discussions, short meeting, showing and discussing prints, and other social stuff. Hotel am Scheunenviertel did not have these facilities, so I dropped the idea of recommending this hotel as the preferred hotel, and Mitte as the preferred area to stay in.

Charlotteburg as Base Camp Area

When booking the preview trip to Berlin, I did not really care where the travel agency had me stay. I was so late in deciding this trip, that I had to take what I could get. So, I ended up in a small hotel, Hotel Air,  in the Kurfurstendamm area, which is the center of the old West Berlin.

I fould this area to be excellent both in terms of transportation to other parts of Berlin, and in terms of facilities in the area. Transportation both by bus and by U-bahn is very, very good. And it takes no time at all. With U-bahn (Underground) to Mitte is takes  less than 10 minute. With bus a bit longer.

Choosing Hotel

When choosing hotel, I suggest you find any hotel the Charlottenburg area that fits your special needs and wishes, and your purse. You could do that by searching the Internet, or by talking to you travel agency.

If, you don't want to bother with that,  you could link in to my hotel suggestions. Below is the hotels, links to these hotels, and the most obvious pros and cons. All these hotels are within 1 km radius, and all are centrally places in the Kurfürstendamm area.

Hotel Air

Older hotel very centrally situated in the area. About 200 meter from one of the main entrances to Berlin Zoo. Very efficient in terms of waking distance to bus and U-bahn. This is a 2 star hotel. Good breakfast, that is included in the price. Areas at the hotel, that meets our demands for social activites. Small patio. Charming hotel. Internet access in all rooms, but you have to pay for that separately.

Cons: No air-condition, and if it is hot in Berlin the rooms can get very hot (just open the window, as I did). The bar is very small, and an extention of the reception desk. Limited number of choices (no real bar in fact).

I have written to the hotel to get permission to use their facilities for our more social business, but they have not answered me yet, but I foresee no problems. I will follow up on this issue. No group price is possible at this hotel.

On a scale from 1 to 10, I rate this hotel 6.  The hotel is in Ansbacherstrasse. Quiet strasse. For this hotel, you book online.

City Hotel Ansbach

The hotel next door in the same street.  They offered rooms as low as Euro 39 a night, so I had a chat with them. This hotel is, what they call a standard hotel with no stars. The reason for this is that they have rooms both with private bathrooms, and rooms without separate bathroom (shared bathrooms on the same floor).

I had a look at two double rooms with private bathrooms, and they were perfectly ok. Same standard as Hotel Air. I also checked some of the "shared" bathroom, and they were fine as well. I think, this hotel share the patio with Hotel Air.

The hotel is not as charming as Hotel Air.  I did not visit any of the single rooms, but expect them to be very small and with no air condition. Internet Access from the hotel? I really don't know, but I would think so.

Cons: I did now see any bar, but they have a breakfast room, that we have permission to use after 12.00 p.m . I have negotiated 10 single rooms all with private bathrooms at Euro 55 a night (that is down from Euro 69). If you should want to live in this hotel you need to send an email to the hotel using the "code word": "Norwegian Bear", to be recognised as a member of the G Summit Group.

On a scale from 1 to 10, I rate this hotel 5.   The hotel is in Ansbacherstrasse. Quiet strasse.

Motel One

My first day in Berlin, I wanted to locate where I could get some films. Nearest place was in Europa Center about 100 meters away from my hotel. However, they did not have professional films like e.g. Provia. A kind lady sent me walking 15 minutes down Kurfürstendamm to a professional store. And what a professional store :-) .They even had a couple of really old Contax' for me to look at. I got Provia there, and lots of other stuff to investigate. Provia 100 in Germany is about Euro 7 a piece, and Provia 400 about Euro 8 a piece.

On my way back looking for The Newton Stiftung (Newton Museum),  I strolled down Kantstrasse towards the Zoo. In Kantstrasse I stumbled over this large, 250 room, brand new hotel/motel, and went in to have a chat there as well.

I talked to the receptionist and asked for permission to see a room and take some shots. He wasn't quite sure, but the hotel manager, Daniel Müller, was there, so I had a chat with him. Very friendly man. No problem with seeing the rooms, and he was glad if I would take some shots of the fine lobby, because he needed some :-) . True story.

This hotel/motel is brand new, high standard rooms, all airconditioned, a great open and light lobby and space for us to work in. In a later mail, I asked Daniel Müller, if we could use the lobby for short meetings, and he answered that he would even arrange the chairs for us.

The hotel has s nice, but small bar in the lobby, and the whole feel of the place was very good. And all people very friendly.  Internet access from the lobby area is free, but from the rooms you need to pay.

But there is some cons: Kantstrasse is a main street, so expect some traffic at all hours. One corner of the hotel/motel is MUCH too close to the U-bahn track. So if you want to book here, make sure that you get a room away from the street, and that particular corner. On the other hand, all rooms, are airconditioned, so you don't need to sleep with an open window if it gets hot in Berlin.

Prices for a single room go as low as Euro 59.00 a nicht. Double room Euro 74.00, but you need to check the Internet for the actual price in the Summit period (btw, this goes for all hotels). Breakfast is not included, but come as low as Euro 5.00.

I tried to negotiate a group price for 10 single rooms, but had no luck with that :-( .

On the scale, I rate this hotel/motel 7.

What you should know!

While in Berlin I had a small, Dahish travel agency, owned by a Berliner, and with Berlin as his speciality, working on accommodations in Berlin for us. When I came back there was an email.  I had asked the owner of the agency, please, to come up with good suggestions for hotels, and good group prices. He came up with very few hotels, but we needed to book collectively almost at once. I asked him why.

The agency owner had been in contact with 45 hotels in Berlin, but only a few could give us 10 to 15 single rooms. It seem, that we collide with a couple of large conferences in Berlin, so many hotel are already book in that period.

I suggest, therefore, that you make reservations at the hotel of your choice as soon as possible (you can always cancel your reservation at a later date, if necessary).

I am sure that, that you will find accommodation even if you wait with your reservation till a later date, but you might find yourself staying at a hotel at the outskirts of Berlin.

Base Camp Bar

If you have been out shooting all day, and are really tired, want a drink and a chat with some fellow G Shooters, you go to Gecco Bar in Rankestasse 3 at K-damm. This is a small, nice and modern bar in the center of it all, but away from the main streets.  Latte Machiato Euro 2.80, Evian Euro 2.10 and small bier Euro 2.30.

In Berlin, at some places, don't be surpriced if water and coffee are as expensive as bier (read: inexpensive). Berlin is really not an expensive city.

To Sum Up

Base Camp Area is suggested to be the Kurfürstendamm area in the Charlottenburg district.

Charlotteburg is a very good area to stay in. It's the center of the old West-Berlin, and has every fascility you can dream of. Public transportation to other parts of the city is absolutely now problem by bus, by U-bahn or by train.

Search the Internet and book any hotel in that area, or choose one of the suggested hotels mentioned above. Anyway you choose to do, you will be fine :-) . Please note my pros and cons of each hotel.
