it really makes no sense at all to me. any rational human being should be able to look at this and realize that our leaders are illogical and should not be given the power they have. i REALLY don't understand how people can support this sort of behavior. how can somebody honestly prefer to be represented by killers and rapists rather than women or homosexuals? how can you look at this and say that the military is doing a good job and should be respected and supported? throw in the countless cases of abuse, murder, and torture, the general disregard for human life, both foreign and domestic, and the way the government "takes care" of it's veterans and it all seems very obvious that things need to be scrapped and rebuilt from the ground up.

It is difficult to imagine how a ‘city’ that was once the centre of a thriving civilisation can be ‘lost’ without a trace, but there are many archaeological sites around the world that have been reclaimed by the jungle and been forgotten in time.

Such is the voracity of the jungle in the remote parts of the world these ruins are located in, as the excavations continue, the already excavated areas are again being swallowed up by the jungle unless constantly maintained – try walking around the outer ruins at Tikal in Guatemala and Palenque in Mexico.

Once a focal centre for the Tairona (sometimes spelt Tayrona) people, La Ciudad Perdida is buried deep in the jungle in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range in the far north of Colombia.

It pays to be fit to walk the 2-3 day trek through the thick vegetation and river crossings to arrive at the bottom of some 1200 single pile stone steps that lead up to La Ciudad Perdida. This last hurdle is a true engineering marvel of precision and dedication. They have remained intact, despite centuries of heavy rain and all-engulfing jungle, as have the neatly piled flat-stone terraces and roads at the ancient city itself.

It was a real shocker to emerge into the open clear-cut farmlands at the end of 6 days of wrestling with the dense jungle, its remoteness, muddy hillsides and vicious mosquitoes. All of a sudden, the greenery that had cast cool shadows gave way to wide open sky, I could hear chainsaws and dogs barking and see rising smoke at different points in the distance.

There is a degree of danger when visiting La Ciudad Perdida due to the fact the region is controlled by battle hardened paramilitary groups. There have been some tourist kidnappings. They control the coca plantations you will see on the trek and you might even be offered a visit to a working cocaine laboratory.

The potential danger is not deterring many tourists doing the trek every year. Along with Parque Tairona (Tairona Park), it is a highly recommended place to visit in the region (and in the country).

"(CNN) -- The uncle of a 12-year-old Vermont girl whose body was found Wednesday was charged with kidnapping, a federal prosecutor said Thursday . . .

"An autopsy was taking place Thursday on the body of Brooke Bennett, and the suspect, Michael Jacques, could face further charges if the death is ruled a homicide, U.S. Attorney Thomas Anderson said . . .

"Jacques was arrested Sunday on a charge of sexually assaulting another young girl, according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Burlington, Vermont.

"Ray Gagnon, Brooke's former stepfather, has been charged with sexually assaulting the same child. Gagnon also faces a federal obstruction of justice charge and is due in court Monday . . .

"Brooke's body was found in a fresh grave off a road in Randolph, a town about 60 miles southeast of Burlington, a week after she disappeared.

"It appears to be foul play," Col. James Baker, director of the Vermont State Police, said Wednesday.

"Information gathered in a search of Jacques' home led police to the grave site, Baker said, but he provided no details.

"The girl Jacques is accused of assaulting told detectives that he had been having sex with her since she was 9, according to the affidavit. She also told investigators she had a sexual encounter with Gagnon in June 2007, the affidavit said.

"The girl recounted how when she was 9 she found a note under her pillow that said she had been chosen to be in a program for sex called "Breckenridge," the affidavit said. She was told that her "trainer" was Jacques. She told authorities that to graduate she had to attain a 75 percent on "how you perform."

"According to the affidavit, the girl said Jacques picked Brooke up on June 25 and told her they would be going to a party. The girl told police she understood Brooke would be "taken into the 'Breckenridge' program that day, and that she would have sex with adult males."

"The girl said that she, Brooke and Jacques then went to Jacques' home, where the two girls watched television until the man asked Brooke to come upstairs with him. The girl said she never saw Brooke again and that Jacques ordered her to lie about what happened that day, according to the affidavit . . ."

Recently, I had a conversation with a co-worker on a recent court decision against a state legislature;s attempt to make child rape a capital crime. I agreed with the court that doing so was a slippery slope that conceivably could  lead back to other crimes becoming a death penalty issue.

I still agree with that. Child molesters should be alive to enjoy the well-deserved attention they receive in prison, and they should be able to bask in that attention for life.

On the other hand, raping a child and then killing her  certainly rates a death sentence. They should not receive the anaesthetic and narcotic, however, before getting that excruciating IV bolus of potassium chloride ripping through their blood vessels.

As for tonight's second entry, from "Do no harm" department . . .

"NEW YORK (CNN) -- To people around the world who have seen the video, Esmin Green is a symbol of a health-care system that seems to have failed horribly . . .

"Green, 49, is shown rolling off a waiting room chair at King County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, on June 19. She lands face-down on the floor, convulsing.

"Surveillance video captures her lying on the floor for more than an hour as several hospital workers see her and appear to ignore her. She died there . . ."

I hope they rot in hell too.

Burlington,Vermont-

It's a case that Nancy Grace described as having "layer upon layer of evil" on her show last night, and I am afraid she hit the nail on the head with that statement.

Vermont state police found the body of missing 12-year-old Brooke Bennett in Randolph,VT which is near the home of her uncle Michael Jacques (who has a prior conviction for aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping). According to an affidavit, a 14-year-old female witness told the Vermont investigators that Brooke's uncle was directly involved in the girl's disappearance.

She told the police that Jacques "took Brooke to his home in order to initiate her into a child sex ring the day she disappeared". This same witness also told the police that to be initiated into the ring, that Brooke would have to have sex with adult men. Witness also said that she and Brooke watched TV for a while before Jacques told her to leave and he lead Brooke upstairs. This was the last time she saw Brooke.(us district court affidavit).

On Monday Jacques was arrested and arraigned on aggravated sexual assault of a different girl who it looks like he also recruited for this "program" or sex ring. He was seen on the store videotape next to Brooke and was the last one with her. He planned out this whole thing very carefully,even going into Brooke's myspace page and posting as her to make it look as if she was going to meet someone on the 25th of June. If that wasn't enough, apparently he tricked Brooke into thinking she was attending a party, but instead she was brought to his home, and the 14-year-old relative of Jacques, who said she had been sexually assaulted by him since age 9 herself, LEFT HER THERE with this monster when she knew full well what he was capable of doing to her. This teenager should have some responsibility for this.

I know she is a minor and probably will not. However, you are talking about a little 12- year-old girl, that she could have saved if she had notified someone of what was going on earlier. Talk about leading a lamb to slaughter! What the devil was going on here?! This was truly evilness at its worst. He needs to get the death penalty and since he is being charged in federal court (with the kidnapping)-he is eligible to get that needle or the chair. Then, there is Brooke's Stepfather Ray Gagnon, he is involved in all this too it appears.

Oh, this is all so twisted, cruel and sick. I'm so mad I can hardly see straight! Why were two sex offenders even allowed to be around Brooke at all??!! Her mother and her aunt saw nothing wrong with this either?

West Braintree-Brooke Marie Bennett, 12, died last week in Randolph Center.

She was born July 12,1995, in Randolph, the daughter of James and Cassandra Bennett.

Brooke attended Braintree School and had just completed seventh grade at Randolph Union High School where she was a member of the girl's basketball and lacrosse teams. She loved her pets, "Lily" the cat and "Scruffy" her dog. Brooke liked watching "Sponge Bob" and "Hannah Montana" on television and reading. She also liked to eat Bagels, popcorn and spaghetti, and was known to put ketchup on everything.

She is survived by her mother Cassandra Gagnon of West Braintree; her father and stepmother, James and Janet Bennett of Bethel; a sister Savanna Andress of West Braintree; 3 brothers, Dennis Andress of West Braintree, Nikolas and Cyrus Bennett of Bethel; her maternal grandmother, Lucinda Milne of West Braintree, maternal grandfather Dennis Adams of St. Petersburg, Fla. Maternal great-grandmother, Lila Woodard of Randolph Center and her paternal grandmother, Arlene St. Pierre of Bethel and step-grandparents, Osmyn and Sandra Stevens of Bethel.

Funeral services will be Wednesday July 9, 11:00a.m. at Murray Auditorium in the Randolph Union High School with the Rev. Ronald E. Rilling and Pastor Thomas Hardy officiating. Calling hours will be Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 pm at Murray Auditorium.

She’s been missing for a week. Federal prosecutors soon file kidnapping charges against the child’s uncle, who could face the death penalty.

What are we left to think? The news is as gruesome and horrific as you’d ever care to hear, especially if you’re a parent, or an uncle of a beautiful niece.

You take a deep breath, and you wonder. And then you read on about authorities alleging how Michael Jacques, 42, had carefully orchestrated events to look like his niece had gone off to see someone she had met online. A parents’ worst nightmare. But another teenage girl then changes her story and claims that Jacques had, on the night in question, violated the trust of his niece by talking her into thinking she was going to a party. Instead, he took her to his home to initiate her into a child sex ring. The same child sex ring the 14-year-old witness claims to have been a part of since the age of nine.

Now Jacques is charged under a federal law that provides for the death penalty in a kidnapping resulting in a child’s death. To make matters worse for the accused, and one’s conscience, Jacques has prior convictions for kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault.

Police unearthed Brooke Bennett’s body Wednesday from a makeshift grave about a mile from her uncle’s house. With autopsy results still pending, prosecutors said they could not say whether the twelve-year-old had been murdered.

But the press sure made it appear as though she had. And reading about it makes one immediately jump to the conclusion that this beautiful child’s uncle killed her. That the man is a horrible monster-predator who preys on children and deserves to be put out of everyone’s misery.

The words, “The death penalty is too good for this creep,” slip to the edge of my tongue. They are followed by an inspiration, a desire, a want to pull the switch myself. Or is it the syringe? I forget. How are we killing them off these days? And who needs a trial anyway, right? “Hang him from the highest bridge.”

But after the anger subsides – and the sick feeling in my stomach dissolves into acid – I begin to remember my compassion for the child’s family. A feeling of understating absorbs me, the same kind of feeling I shared in other matters involving the killing of other children such as Nicholas Markowitz and Larry King. I send warmth and prayers to the victim’s parents for having to endure something that may lack closure for a very long time.

And then I think again about the mother of Brooke Bennett, and what she must be thinking about her brother who’s still in jail without bail, facing the very real prospect of a death sentence.

In what form will justice be found for this woman? Will it be discovered through the ultimate conviction and state-sanctioned murder of Michael Jacques? And if so, how should I feel about that? Should I really want to see another human being put to death? Should I care? Or should I be feeling something else? Maybe a sort of compassion for this wretched human being. Some type of forgiveness and hope that this man, who could be a murderous pedophile, gets his day in court. And if found guilty, that he would be sentenced to prison for a very long time, to keep him away from society and to punish him for his sins. But then again, I think, maybe we should just kill him. Wouldn’t that really make me feel better? After all, two deaths are better than one, right?

1. Hoy me he vuelto a quedar un rato embelezada escuchando el sonido de la guitarra acústica a manos de mi padre. No recuerdo si alguna vez he escrito aquí sobre eso, pero lo cierto es que me encanta escuchar las melodías y es, junto con el sonido del mar, uno de mis sonidos favoritos. Sigh.

Colombian president Alvaro Uribe has kicked the guerrillas butt and showed that it can be done.

Let me track back. There is a leftist group in Colombia known as FARC, they started as a leftist movement to turn Colombia into another Cuba; this was over 40 years ago. They have since become a fighting army of drug dealers. They use kidnapping for ransom and drug production and trafficking as means to support their cause.

What cause is that? I don't think they even know anymore. They claim to want what is best for the Colombian people, but at the same time they perform terrorist attacks and plant mines in the farmers fields where regular people get killed or mutilated. The big guns are reportedly living large in neighboring countries while the regular revel soldier is hungry and working in the jungle. Some defectors have reported that there is no more ideology, they are trafficking drugs and making money, and all they want is to take Colombia by force.

Over the years they have received support from Cuba, some leftist groups in Europe, currently some Latin American governments and they have been discovered to have ties to the terrorist group ETA in Spain.

The Colombian government tricked them into moving some of the hostages, from three different locations, to be sent to the new commander in chief, the revels thought they were following orders and complied. They loaded the hostages into a helicopter and took off. To the surprise of all, the men were Colombian military disguised as revels and they subdued the only revel to flight with them. They freed 15 people, including three American military contractors, one Woman former Colombian presidential candidate and 11 police and military men. They did not fire one shot, they did not killed or injured one person.

They dramatically injured the structure of the FARC.

I am not Colombian, but I am very proud of Uribe's courage and strenth. He has faced critizism from friends and foes, but he has remained firm in his convictions and is showing results. Congratulations to the people of Colombia!!!

Unfortunately there are still about 400 hostages in the jungles of Colombia, let's hope they get released soon as well.

According to the sources, around 16 security personnel were kidnapped from Bara, in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas by Haji Mangal Bagh, chief of the Lashkar-e-Islam militant group and more than 124 personnel were kidnapped by Baitullah Mehsud’s men on Tuesday night.

However, the Pakistan Army denied the abduction.

There are two major groups of local Taliban in NWFP, headed by Baitullah Mehsud and Haji Mangal Bagh.

According to an another report, the paramilitary forces on Tuesday smashed two hideouts of banned outfits led by Pir Saifur Rehman and Mufti Munir Shakir, in Tehsil Bara of Khyber Agency and arrested 18.

Turi tribesmen of Pewar village in Kurram Agency have released 44 kidnapped Frontier Corps (FC) officials after the jirga held successful negotiations with the local tribesmen, media reported.

Mohammed Azam Khan, political agent of Kurram Agency, told reporters in Parachinar that the tribals in Pewar village made 44 FC men hostage and a 25-member jirga was sent there for their release.

The jirga members agreed to the demands of the captors concerning opening of all the main roads in the agency.

Linda Urioste from Greenacres, (I’m not making this up) Florida, is a pet lover. Even if nobody else seems to think so. When her dog “Scooby” went missing, she waited on calling the animal shelter because she assumed it was stolen. Strangely enough, Scooby wasn’t, Scooby had simply run away. A few weeks went by, and the animal shelter, not having found any evidence of ownership, put him up for adoption. Scooby, who is now called Buddy (Florida gets first prize in originality here) went to live with Jutta Hollar and her husband, and was quite happy there.

When the Hollars found out what had really happened, they offered to give Buddy/Scooby back to his rightful owner. However, when they met with Urioste, they found her a decidedly unpleasant piece of screaming trash, so they kept the dog.

Urioste, not one to give up easily, went and kidnapped the Hollars’ Cat.

The following message was left on the Hollars’ answering machine:

"I was the used-to-be-owner, but I was wondering if you were missing a gray pussy cat. Because a pussycat ran out in front of my car not far from your house and I saved its life. I almost ran him over. So, I was just wondering how you are enjoying Scooby, because I am enjoying your pussycat while he is in his crate. You call it crate, I call it a cage. Have a nice day."

Urioste was arrested and charged with theft and extortion, causing cats and dogs all over Florida to heave a sigh of relief. I wonder; if it's a cat you're kidnapping, is it called catnapping?

VAN BUREN, Ark. — A man accused of assaulting and tying up his mother because he was reportedly mad about the death of his pet skunk has been arrested in Waldron, authorities said.

Authorities say 35-year-old Scott Tolles Sullivan was arrested early Saturday in Waldron. He is being held without bail in Van Buren. Authorities say he hid from police in an attic and was arrested after police shot him with a bean bag gun.

Sullivan's mother, 56-year-old Maria Sullivan, called police Wednesday night after freeing herself from duct tape and rope, authorities said. Maria Sullivan told police that her son became upset when he learned that her dog killed his pet skunk.

According to police, Sullivan said her son hit her with a homemade club and tied her up. She says Scott Sullivan also tied up a 14-year-old disabled boy who is under her care.

Scott Sullivan was arrested on suspicion of two counts of kidnapping and domestic battery.

The visa denial is a result of a court case currently going on in London where Boy George is being accused of false imprisonment and assault. Boy George picked up a male escort from an online escort service called Gaydar and arranged to have him come to his London flat to take photos. Boy George and another unidentified man then held the 28 year old escort down and chained him with handcuffs to a wall to have their way with him. The man managed to escape by pulling one of the hooks out of the wall and ran for help at a newspaper stand weaing nothing but his underwear. Needless to say, the U.S. has a problem with that and until that's resolved, Boy George will have to cancel his U.S. tour.

In a panic I contacted my lawyer immediately. As you do.

Before I go on I would like to say a huge thanks to my lawyer for all he did for me and my son. He did everything he could to help me get my son back. In saying that, the law in our country, when it comes to kidnapping and rightful custodian, is antiquated. Here, it is still possession is nine tenths of the law.While you're in a courtroom trying to do the utmost you can to ensure your child's safety, the custodians are damn near killing them.

For all his faults, I would like to believe that my son's father truly did do what he thought was best for his son. I also believe that what happened to my son, although it happened while he was with his father, that his father did not know what was happening. This may be naive, but it is the only way, at this moment, that I can process this information and still believe my son's father loves him and would never knowingly hurt him.

I spent a week with my lawyer, all day, every day, working on a case to get my son back. At the time, if both parent's are named on a child's birth certificate and there had been no previous custody application in court, then all the protection notices in the universe couldn't stop the child being with either parent. I wish I had of known that before agreeing to let my son go.

My son's father was in a steady relationship, had a good job, and was settled in his new home. On the surface it looked like the perfect environment for my son, according to the court. But let's take a look at this perfect environment for a moment.

The job front. He was in a high paying, long hours, high stress job. His job would take him all over the country, for up to a week at a time, which would leave my son at home without his father. In these times his partner would look after my son, or my son would go to (in my son's own words) the people on the hill. To this day, I still have no idea who the people on the hill were. He would leave for work in (again my son's words) dark time, and would come pick him up after dark time every day after school.

The settled environment. He moved from a 3 bedroom house into a two bed room after he got my son. They moved every time the court or my lawyer found his current address. They lived 8 hours drive from where I lived and I had no transport, so why they would do this I have no idea.

The steady relationship. (This is the one that cracks me up the most). Let me tell you about his relationship. She and I were friends from school. The last dealings I had with her during our school days was when she traumatised my best friend (male) so much that he tried to commit suicide. At that time I wanted nothing more than to kill her, but I showed some restraint and bad mouthed her to everyone instead.

Years later I met her. She told me she had changed and that she was a mother now. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and became friends with her again. Stupid mistake.

Thanks to this, my son is not allowed out of the country at all until he turns 16.

Finally, I got my day in court and was awarded full custody of my son. My lawyer told me to get hold of a car and go get my baby back. At the time I had no licence and no vehicle. I thought my whole world had crumbled because I was so close and yet so far away.

A guardian angel came in the form of a neighbour who I hardly even knew. He heard what was going on and came and offered to take me to get my son. I jumped at the chance and we left in about half an hour.

We got to where my son was around midnight and my neighbour suggested that we wait until the morning to pick him up. This would give us time to get some rest and not to disrupt my son's rest. I agreed and literally waited up all night until 8am the next morning.

I made contact with his father at 6am in the morning. He told me that I was not allowed to pick up my son until late afternoon. At 8am he called me back to say that I could pick him up at 3pm from the airport.

At 3pm I was at the airport waiting for my son. At 3.30pm he showed up. I got my son back with nothing but the clothes on his back. Not even a sweater to keep him warm. But I didn't care. I had him back.

We got in the van and went straight home, stopping only long enough for food.

When we got home my best friend was waiting for us. When she found out my son had no clothes or anything she put us in her car and we went to her parent's house. Luckily her mother was throwing out all her brother's old clothes and was great with needle and thread. Thanks to her family my son came away with enough clothes to get him through.

Next morning, being a Monday, I enrolled him in school and tried to pick up where we left off.

When my son left, he was a happy playful little boy. When i got him back he was broken. All he would do was sit in the corner facing the corner and not talk or smile. He would not talk until I would nag at him enough that he would start kicking, screaming, punching and biting.

That was when I started to try to get some help for him. This was eight years ago.
