10. The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band

Considered by some to the be the first official concept album. Sgt. Pepper is not only my favorite Beatles album but it makes my list at number ten for telling the story of Billy Shears. I admit to applying a board definition of a concept album to Sgt. Pepper because only three songs actually reference a story [with one being a reprise of the title track], but The Beatles changed the way music and albums were recorded when they released Sgt. Pepper. One could argue Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys started the movement with Pet Sounds [with most songs on a record bearing the same style, as opposed to a collection of previously released singles], but Sgt. Pepper made it commercially feasible.

Signature songs: A Day in the Life, With A Little Help From My Friends, and the rest of the damn album.

9. Trans Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Eve and Other Stories

The metal band Savatage featuring Jon Oliva and producer Paul O'Neil had long desired to write a rock opera with multiple singers backed by a full orchestra. They cited the awkward nature of having a male voice sing female parts as jarring to the progression of a story. Savatage recorded no less than three full concept albums, but the bands' lasting influence on the genre is that they gave birth to the Trans Siberian Orchestra. TSO was essentially born out of the Savatage song Christmas Eve in Sarajevo 12/24 from the album Dead Winter Dead. What followed is the creation of my favorite band and some of the best blended metal and classical music ever. Christmas Eve and Other Stories follows an angel sent by God to find the good still left on Earth. Simple compared to TSO's follow up albums but it also contained three of their best songs. TSO is also proof that Pyotr Tchaikovshy's Nutcracker was meant to be performed with screaming guitars.

8. Coheed and Cambria - In Keep Secrets of Silent Earth 3

Coheed and Cambria is definitely an acquired taste, but leader singer Claudio Sanchez has grown on me and as such the band ranks as one of my favorite rock/emo/progressive bands.  Admittedly, I have no idea what 'emo' means, but I like the sound.   The four album epic definitely needs the help of the internet to make any sense, but once you get the general story and idea of what Claudio was intending the scope of the narrative becomes massive.

7. Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness

Ditto what I said about the previous Coheed album, but with a better track listing.

6. Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime II

A pale imitation of the better album to follow, but proof that Queensryche can still write solid music with a deep, engaging story.

5. Savatage - Streets

The last Savatage album with both Jon and Cris Oliva.  The album Streets was what their previous album Gutter Ballet was supposed to be.  Also intended to be a double album, but Savatage's prior album sales made the record company force deep cuts to the tracklisting. The story of the rise and fall and rise and fall and rise of a drug dealer turned guitar player for the New York City streets is compelling while at the same time somewhat incomplete due to the removal or key storytelling songs.  However an overall a great metal album. The band always hated that the record company tagged the title as Streets - 'a rock opera.'

4. Dream Theater: Scenes from a Memory

A murder mystery spanning decades with a twist ending.  The music is classic Dream Theater with incredible lyrics. Behind Images and Words and Train of Thought this is my favorite DT album.  Even if you don't like Dream Theater this album is worth listening to once with a lyric sheets just to experience the story.

3. Kamelot - The Black Halo

Kamelot is an internet find for me as I stumble upon a prog-metal site heralding the Black Halo.  They were right, which does happen occasionally with blogs.  With musicanship revivaling Dream Theater, the Black Halo is definitely Kamelot's finest opus.   The story is based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust, which means nothing to me as I haven't read the play but might mean something to one of our readers.  Kind of a Devil Went Down To Georgia type of thing with the selling of souls.

Signature songs: March of Mephisto, The Haunting (Somewhere in Time), Abandoned

2. Trans Siberian Orchestra - The Lost Christmas Eve

Somewhat the same premise as previous TSO albums, but I find this one more enjoyable and overall the superior album because it seems like the crescendo to earlier music. I will see this band live someday.   I want to experience the music along with the epileptic seizures induced by their light show.

1. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime

This might very well be my favorite album of all time.  Each song can stand alone and doesn't have to be a part of the greater story.  Drugs, sex, nuns, priests, mind control, murder and revolution.  Prostitute nuns no less!  Silent Lucidity might have brought Queensryche some mainstream recognition, but Mindcrime is and will always been their pinnacle.  Name me one other better concept album?   Nope, wrong answer. There is none.  Don't give me The Wall or Tommy or even Genesis' the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.  All them are like Barney songs compared to Operation: Mindcrime.  And for those of you keeping track at home...yes I did just compare the Who to a purple dinosaur.  And new Metallica still sucks too.

Signature songs:  Suite Sister Mary, Eyes of a Stranger, I Don't Believe in Love, and Breaking the Silence.

Judas Priest - Nostradamus (2008): Anytime the Priest returns with a new album, it's a reason for me to celebrate. I've been a devout worshipper at the altar of Judas Priest since 1982 so I knew I would like the new record. The problem with NOSTRADAMUS isn't the material, it's the time. The album clocks in at over an hour and forty minutes! That's serious listening. So far I like the record but I definitely need more time with it.....a lot more time.....

Moonspell -  Night Eternal (2008): I have had an advance of this album for a few weeks now and I am still listening to it. I haven't really kept up with Moonspell in the last few years but NIGHT ETERNAL has me checking my Moonspell catalogue so I can fill a few holes. A review is coming.....

Headhunter - Parasite Of Society (2008): Destruction mainman Schmier has had Headhunter going since he left Destruction in 1990 and this is their fourth, and latest, album. It's not Thrash like Destruction, more like Power Metal, and the vocals are a little hard to take. Review is coming.....

Heidevolk - Walhalla Wacht (2008): I've been getting into a lot of Pagan Metal/Viking Metal lately and Napalm Records has been very good to me by sending me some of the latest releases (Tyr, Hollenthon, Heidevolk, etc). The music is superb here, very grand sounding, but the lyrics are all in Dutch. That's just a small complaint as I've just enjoyed listening to the music, it's not always about the words. Review coming also.....

Iron Maiden - Fear Of The Dark (1993): I love this album! I remember back at the end of my high school years my friends and I were disappointed with 1990's NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING. Maybe it was because SEVENTH SON was so good? When FEAR OF THE DARK came out in '93, I waited in line for it at a local record store and got a free poster for my trouble! The title track is so good and 'From Here To Eternity' is just classic Maiden. A solid album that everyone forgets.

Iron Maiden - The X-Factor (1995) & Virtual XI (1998): The Blaze Bayley era! There were some good moments in the post-Bruce Maiden like 'The Clansman', 'Man On The Edge', 'Sign Of The Cross', 'Futureal'.....those were the singles. I decided after the Maiden show Friday night that I had to revisit the Blaze era to give it a fresh listen. Hard to believe these albums were released 13 and 10 years ago respectively.

Krokus - Rock The Block (2003): Marc Storace returns to the band after an 8 year absence and Fernando Von Arb is still pumping out boogie riffs this side of AC/DC's Angus Young. This "reunion" is basically the Storace/Von Arb show but it was the best Krokus album since HEART ATTACK (1988). This would be one of my Top 10 of 2003.

Iced Earth - Framing Armageddon (2007): What was one of my Top 15 Albums of 2007 (#13) has now become an afterthought. I've barely listened to it since the new year and I didn't even bother to review it. I'm preparing a post on albums I missed in 2007 that I've finally bought and I decided to revisit this record.

Kamelot - Ghost Opera (2007): Kamelot is one of my favorite bands and I have been listening to this album once a week since it came out. I decided to really give it a fresh round of spins so I can review it. Another album that made my Top 15 Albums of 2007 (#10), I would rate it higher today.

Journey - Revelation (2008): I really like this record and I've been giving this a lot of time on the stereo.....just the new songs mostly.

Koolist on rämedalt kopp ees, hakkasin Fyerellaliga tegelema ja mingid mõtted ja asjad viskasid end lambist näkku lihtsalt. Äge.

Loen hetkel sihukest asja nagu Simon Greeni Blue Moon Rising. Fäntäsi jah, aga ägeda mõõkleva printsessi, alguses argpüksist kangelase, naljaka lohe ja rääkiva ükssarvikuga, mis on nagu üsna äge. Ning Green kirjeldab ka kõike nii ägedalt, verd ja jama ja õudust ja muud. Et noh. Ega teda kuskil vist nagu paberkandjal saada pole, aga eks internet eksisteerib.

Torno a infestare la rubrica musicale con un  nuovo articolo, dedicato a una delle mie band favorite: Lorenzo mi ha ammonito che gli "sgozzacapretti" come li chiama lui non sarebbero presenza gradita :-) e io rispettando la sua opinione posso dire che qui non parlerò di sgozzamenti ne tantomeno di sound grezzo: i Kamelot, band americana guidata dal vocalist Roy Khan - sono un gruppo che trasuda poesia, epicità e romanticismo da ogni singola nota. La loro produzione sa bilanciare le cavalcate e le ritmiche potenti con melodie, assoli e soprattutto linee vocali di bellezza assoluta: personalmente Roy Khan ha uno dei timbri più struggenti che abbia mai sentito, pronto a lanciarsi in un lamento d'amore (come nella straziante "Don't You Cry") o a divenire narratore dalla spiccata teatralità e drammaticità ( "Descent of the Archangel", "Elizabeth: Mirror Mirror", "Lost and damned"). Godibilissimi anche gli arrangiamenti, sempre di classe (soprattutto quelli del chitarrista Youngblood, a tutti gli effetti il partner perfetto di Khan) e i duetti con la voce femminile che caratterizzano molti brani del gruppo. Anche i testi meritano una note a parte, per la varietà di sentimenti e di rimandi al patrimonio gotico/romantico (l'album "Epica" si ispira al Faust di Goethe). Penso sia abbastanza per incoraggiare chi non li conosce a cercare qualcosa, sempre che siate aperti d'orecchio e apprezziate una buona dose di lirismo musicale!

O Centro do Universo... posso ser eu, podes ser tu, o sol, a lua, a terra, infinitas estrelas... não  é algo que depende do nosso olhar, da perspectiva de cada um de nós?...

Hva vet så jeg om sjangeren metal, som berettiger et forsøk på en sådan anmeldelse? Svaret er: Ingen verdens ting av viktighet. Men jeg vet ett og annet om betydningen av gode konsertopplevelser, og så vet jeg noe om stemninger og visuelle inntrykk. Derfor drister jeg meg til et forsøk allikevel jeg. Here Goes anything.

Konserten som ble avholdt lørdag 3. mai var utsolgt. Det betyr at godt over 1700 mennesker var i salen. Stemningen var oppunder taket fra første sekund bandet gikk på scenen, og varte hele konserten ut. For min del er dette tredje gang jeg ser Roy og bandet hans på scenen, og ikke overraskende kjenner jeg igjen flere av fansen idet jeg smyger meg gjennom mengden på min vei mot fotograven. Det er spesielt en jente som utmerker seg. Hun er fra Japan, har status som såkalt blodfan, og dukker regelmessig opp på flere av konsertene under en og samme turnè. Det fikk meg med gru til å tenke på fjorårets konsert. Ikke fordi den var dårlig, for det var den slettes ikke, men fordi backstagearrangementet var så dårlig. For et blodfan som reiser halve jorden rundt for å treffe heltene sine, så er det nok en gedigen skuffelse at ”etterfesten” der de heldigste kan treffe disse utvalgte avgudene, nærmest er en flopp. Slik var det heldigvis ikke i år, jeg håper hun følte hun fikk igjen for pengene denne gangen. Skjønt, jeg hadde store problemer med å tolke de minimalistiske ansiktsuttrykkene hennes. Japanere er ikke veldig ekspressive av seg.

Nå skulle jeg selvsagt skrevet noe innsiktsfullt og informativt om musikken. Det kommer som nevnt ikke til å skje, av gode grunner. Jeg er ikke spesielt bevandret i metalmusikk, men jeg har ikke noe imot den heller. Og her passer det veldig fint å sitere noe Roy sa til meg for snart ti år siden: ”Sjangerpuritanere irriterer meg”. De irriterer meg også. Ingen musikktype er derfor mer høyverdig enn andre. Alt handler om personlig smak, og kvaliteten på produktet. Dessuten så kan jeg avsløre at selv om Roy både fremfører og lager metalmusikk, så er det sjelden han lytter til denne genren utenom arbeidstid.

Tilbake til det visuelle. Kamelot er i aller høyeste grad et visuelt band, og Roy er i motsetning til sin japanske følgesvenn, en svært teatralsk artist, noe som gjør jobben min som fotograf til en veldig morsom opplevelse, jeg kan virkelig velte meg i dramatiske uttrykk. Nytt av året er rullende øyne så bare det hvite synes. Hele sceneshowet er nøye regissert, og det holdes ikke tilbake med effekter. Mye av billettpengene går direkte tilbake til publikum ved bruk av pyro, røykmaskiner, gjestemusikanter, kostymer og andre mektige innslag. Man får med andre ord mye igjen for pengene på en Kamelotkonsert.

Det mest overraskende (for det øvrige publikummet) innslaget i år, må nok ha vært det planlagte ekstranummeret med Roys trekspilltrakterende bestefar på over 80 år. Roy er veldig glad i bestefaren sin. Bestefar har et litt annerledes syn på moderne musikk enn det ”ungdommen” har.  Det er ikke engang sikkert dette kvalifiserer som musikk, det er snarere et forvarsel på at verden går lukt til helvete. Bestefars innsats for å gjøre verden litt mildere ble betalt med en fullsatt sal der ikke et tørt øye var å se. ”Danse mi vise” med tekst av Einar Skjæråsen fra Trysil, sunget av en sortkledd metalrocker og akkompagnert av en slipskledd bestefar som motvillig lot seg føre av scenen. Det ble tydelig hvor Roy har genene sine fra. Det hele var rett og slett ubetalelig.

Det skal visstnok ikke være god kotyme å avsløre hva som står på raideren til et band, så jeg skal ikke røpe mer enn at det var overraskende mye frukt å finne backstage. På Rockefeller, for vel tre år siden, gikk det mest i kneipp med Nugatti.

Åja, bare for ikke å virke fullstendig kjøpt og betalt her: Lyden var visst ikke helt på topp i går. Noen ville sagt ”tidvis grøtete”. Folk ass. Skal nå henge seg opp i alt mulig.

Когато светлините угаснат, настъпва часът на истинската магия и наистина няма какво да се говори.

Концертът на Kamelot миналия петък беше точно от този тип вълшебства, за които не може много да се говори. Трябва да се изживее. Дори дребните организационни неуредици биват забравени и остава само магията на музиката и споменът от едно велико преживяване.

Момчетата бяха приготвили сетлист за промоция на новото издание на последния си албум Ghost Opera, но за щастие някой ги беше информирал, че българските фенове искат да чуят всичките си любими песни от цялото им творчество и това наше желание беше мигновено удовлетворено - програмата беше чувствително променена, за да включи повече песни от албумите The Black Halo, Epica и Karma, и даже за най-върлите фенове, като мен, имаше специален подарък - първият им голям хит - Nights of Arabia от албума The Fourth Legacy.

Ако кажа, че това беше най-великия концерт, на който съм бил, някой ще ме апострофира, че това го казвам за всички концерти, но не е така. Този концерт наистина беше знаменит и не само защото Камелот са най-големите рок музиканти на днешното време, но и защото в залата се беше събрала най-отбраната публика от ценители на тяхната музика. Нямаше нито един излишен човек! Въпреки, че възрастовия диапазон беше отново доста голям (както на повечето концерти у нас) - от 13-14-годишни млади фенки до побелели чичковци и лелки, всички присъстващи знаеха песните на групата наизуст и пееха в див възторг през цялото време.

Може би са прави децата ми, като казаха, че причината за успеха на този концерт беше в липсата на реклама, колкото и парадоксално да звучи това. Липсата на масова реклама дори по "специализираното" радио за рок-музика ЗиРок доведе до това, че в залата дойдоха само хора, които истински ценят музиката на Kamelot и активно се интересуват от музикалните събития, свързани с тях. Безспорно отсъствието на традиционните рок-кибици и метъл-пияндета направи концерта едно незабравимо преживяване.

Thomas Youngblood - началника - така и не се усмихна през цялото време на шоуто, но това явно е негова поза, опитвайки се да подражава на някои други известни китаристи от миналото (R. Blackmore?), отколкото израз на някакво недоволство. Как може да бъде недоволен, като публиката постоянно пееше и скандираше "Ка-ме-лот!"?!

Casey Grillo ни смая с богатия си и сложен drum-kit, както и с умението да си служи с него. Уникален барабанист! В съчетание с цялостното перфектно озвучаване на концерта, неговото изпълнение беше изключително ярко и стабилно, както подобава на една яка ритъм-секция. Оригиналният басист на групата - Glenn Barry - не участва в това турне, но за сметка на това, неговият заместник - Sean Tibbetts - показа, че по нищо не му отстъпва. Шон беше перфектно допълнение към Кейси и не само беше научил материала без грешка, но и беше активен участник в шоуто, въпреки проблемите, които наскоро е имал с коляното.

Най-новият официален член на бандата - клавиристът Oliver Palontai - беше много точно попълнение, за да може звукът от сценичното изпълнение максимално да се доближи до оригиналния студиен запис. Надявам се, неговият талант да допринесе за още много велики песни и албуми.

Перлата на вечерта беше германската красавица Anne-Catrin Märzke, която не само украсяваше визуално сцената, но и пресъздаде всички женски вокали в оригиналните композиции на групата, с което Kamelot постигнаха максимално доближаване до студийното си звучене, а публиката получи максимално удоволствие от представлението.

Разбира се, звездата на групата беше певецът Roy Khan - секс символ за девойките и истински идол за старите ценители на музиката, като мен. Човекът пя с огромно вдъхновение за вярната си публика и усмивката не слезе от лицето му. Изпълнението беше спирано 3-4 пъти от скандиращата възторжена тълпа и на лицето на Khan се изписваше истинско изумление от любовта и страстта на публиката. Определено посрещането на групата от наша страна беше надхвърлило всичките му очаквания.

Надявам се да е било така и за тях този концерт да е оставил хубави спомени така, както за нас ще остане незабравим. Thomas казва на сайта на групата (преводът е на Svuio от блога The Metal News):

Турнето върви страхотно. [...] Първото ни участие в София, България беше вечер, която ще запомним. Свирихме в широка баскетболна зала, която беше пълна до козирката. Предполагам, че имаше 2000 души дошли да гледат първото от много наши пътувания (курсивът е мой - М.Р.) до София.

Дано наистина да има и други срещи с тази велика група. Вярвам, че почитателите на Камелот в България ще стават все повече и повече и следващите концерти ще бъдат на голям стадион, така че всички, които са пропуснали първото им шоу у нас да имат втори шанс.
