Dear Future Husband,

If I could give The Essence of Josephine Baker Award to someone, I’d give it

Dear Future Husband,

If I could give The Essence of Josephine Baker Award to someone, I’d give it to Angelina and Brad. I’ll be completely honest and say I’m a touch envious of Angie. Admittedly, I rarely look up to celebrities out of belief that humans shouldn’t be idolized until they are dead, lest it go to their head. That and the curse of the evil eye. Back to Angie and Brad and idolizing them. I can imagine her walking a cheetah down the Champs-Elysées, probably in a backless satin dress that flows seductively, looking behind her with that trademark gaze of a seductress. More importantly, I admire how they seem to make it work. “It” being the mix of adopted and biological children, humanitarian work, and having fun with their jobs while still balancing family life.

All throughout high school and up until the first few months of college, I had no desire for children. Absolutely none. Snot factories. Things to punch when angry (no, I don’t condone child abuse.) Giggle factories. Squishy things that make noise for $100. And then I read The Kid by Dan Savage, a book for me which changed my entire thought and rationale. Who knew two of The Gays could make it work. And be top choice for adoption amidst the throngs of straight couples. I’d considered the possibility, but I can’t pinpoint why I didn’t want children. Perhaps selfishness. Je ne sais pas.

After reading that book, it’s like a uterus appeared somewhere inside me with this tick-tick-ticking sound, screaming “GET. CHILDREN. NOW!” Never mind the fact that I don’t actually have a uterus (reasons why I may be crazy). I will comment, though, that this coincided with the first time I actually fell in love. 2003 was a crazy year. Reading that book, combined with the pursuit of a relationship, the big scare and subsequent realization, and entering college made me think about priorities and what I wanted out of life. Ever since then, I like to joke whenever I feel waves of nauseau, whether from a hangover or irritating smell, that I’ve got the morning sickness, and I may have a case of K.I.D.S

Therefore, every guy I’ve pursued over the past five years has been with the mindset of “Do you want children someday?” I don’t need a “My god yes, I need children this instant. Let’s go make babies until the next full moon!” Just an indication that children are definitely a priority in the future. With the first love of my life, of course he had no desire to have children. In all honesty, what college kid is thinking about children? Then again, I was never an ordinary anything. What happens at that point? Do you wait around and hope for a change of mind, a change in maturity? Enjoy the present time? It was a buzz kill for any future together. Well, that and his belief that he wasn’t sure if he believed in monogamy. Curiously, I condone affairs so long as the relationship stays intact. In France, at a man’s funeral apparently there are sometimes a side for the widow and a side for the mistress. Sometimes the wife and mistress are even friends. Financially, I believe in monogamy. Sexually… eh. I digress.

This brings us to the present, and which path I’ll follow. Mamma Mia has been playing in my head all day Mostly because I finally saw the movie, but also because here I go again. I’ve been doing the dating thing. As the young kids are calling it these days, kicking it. I’ve even told someone I love them. Perhaps I should have added an addendum. Still, the decision remains on which horse to cast my bets? Both have great qualities. And attributes that irritate the hell out of me. I think it comes down to I see great friendship and a sense of security. I also foresee predictability. In the other, however, I see great potential. Not for us, per se, but rather for himself ( I size people up on a consistent basis). And, of course, I see a lot of my father in l’homme deux. The real problem is that my head, and rational side, has already made the decision while my heart battles with the implications. Of diving in too deep, and possibly the complications. Reasons that have lead to the title of Tease.

I’ve contemplated this over the past five years and refined the reasons and desires for wanting children. This goes back to the goals I’ve defined. What can I say? I want to build something great, something that will last. An enduring testament.

In short, I want a husband, four to six kids, and a career to support them all.

Signed,

Patrique

P.S - It’s been awhile since I’ve done an “Essence of …” article.

Vintage movie posters highlighting various facets of the African-American cultural experience as represented in early film return on postage when the U.S. Postal Service issues the Vintage Black Cinema stamps. The 42-cent commemorative First-Class stamps will be dedicated July 16 at the Newark, NJ, Museum during the Black Film Festival and will go on sale nationwide that day.

Explained U.S. Postal Service Vice President and Consumer Advocate Delores Killette: "Whether spotlighting the talents of entertainment icons Josephine Baker, Duke Ellington, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Fredi Washington, Louis Jordan, Daniel L. Haynes, Victoria Spivey or King Vidor, or documenting changing social attitudes and expectations -- these posters now serve a greater purpose than publicity and promotion. They are invaluable pieces of history, preserving memories of cultural phenomena that otherwise might have been forgotten."

Scheduled to join Killette at the 10 a.m. dedication ceremony Wednesday are Emmy-Award winning Actress Lynn Whitfield who played the leading role in The Josephine Baker Story; Josephine Baker's son Jean-Claude Baker and his brother, Jarry; Louis Jordan's widow, Martha Jordan; Paul Ellington, grandson of Duke Ellington; Newark Mayor Cory A.
"My adoptive mother, whose theme song was 'Two loves Have I, my Country and Paris,' would be delighted, thrilled and deeply moved by this wonderful tribute to African-American culture," said Jean-Claude Baker, one of Josephine Baker's adoptive sons. "Her legend was global and her heart embraced the world. But, despite the acclaim in films like Princess Tam-Tam she never forgot that she was, at heart, a daughter of St Louis."

The Vintage Black Cinema souvenir sheet includes 20 stamps in four rows with five different commemorative stamps featuring posters advertising movies produced for African-American audiences prior to 1950. Stamp Art Director and Designer Carl T. Hermann of Carlsbad, CA, intended to evoke a strip of film with perforations, or sprocket holes, running down the left and right edges. This souvenir sheet also includes selvage text.

Remembered as the first screen appearance of Duke Ellington, the 1929 film Black and Tan features three songs by Ellington and his Cotton Club Orchestra. In this 19-minute short, Ellington, playing himself, is in danger of having his piano repossessed. When his fatally ill girlfriend dances at a nightclub, she saves Ellington's music -- and asks to hear his "Black and Tan Fantasy" on her deathbed.

In the 1921 silent film The Sport of the Gods, the family of a wrongfully convicted man flees disgrace in Virginia only to face immorality and temptation in New York City. Based on a novel by Paul Laurence Dunbar, the film was produced by the short-lived Reol Motion Picture Corporation, which made several movies for black audiences.

One of only four movies to star American-born entertainer Josephine Baker, Princess Tam-Tam tells the story of a novelist who discovers a simple African woman, played by Baker, and presents her as a princess to Parisian society. Released in France in 1935, this French-language feature remains a rare film showcase for Baker's singing and dancing.

Highlighting the talents of singer, saxophonist, and "jump blues" bandleader Louis Jordan, the 1945 short Caldonia is often cited as a precursor of today's music videos. The four musical numbers featured in this 18-minute film also appeared as individual "soundies," short films shown on video jukeboxes at nightclubs and restaurants during the 1940s.

Released in 1929, Hallelujah was one of the first major-studio films to feature an all-black cast. This dramatic story of a field laborer who is seduced away from his community by worldly temptations was filmed primarily in Arkansas and Tennessee. Noted for its portrayal of the rural African-American religious experience, Hallelujah earned King Vidor a nomination for Best Director.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 146 million homes and businesses, six days a week. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products and services, not tax dollars, to pay for operating expenses. The Postal Service has annual revenue of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world's mail.

Background Information

THE SPORT OF THE GODS

Released in 1921, the silent film The Sport of the Gods tells the story of a man who loyally serves a prison sentence for a crime committed by a friend. When his wife and children move from Virginia to New York City to escape disgrace, their moral fiber is tested by the demands of survival in their new northern home.

The Sport of the Gods was produced by the Reol Motion Picture Corporation. Formed after World War I, Reol produced several movies for black audiences. The company survived only briefly, but it is sometimes credited with being one of the first companies to adapt literary works by African Americans for the silver screen.

The film was based on the 1902 novel of the same name by Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906). Remembered primarily as a poet, Dunbar also wrote four novels. At the turn of the 20th century, he was one of the most widely read American poets and one of the first popular African-American writers. Dunbar was honored on a 10-cent U.S. stamp in 1975.

The poster for The Sport of the Gods depicts Jim Skaggs, played by Edward R. Abrams, embracing a reluctant Kitty Hamilton, played by Elizabeth Boyer. The logo for the Reol Motion Picture Corporation appears in the upper left corner. The lower third of the poster reads: "THE SPORT OF THE GODS / BY PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR / AMERICA'S GREATEST RACE POET AND AUTHOR / A TRUE-TO-LIFE STORY OF / ACTION, THRILLS AND HEART INTEREST / WITH AN ALL-STAR CAST OF COLORED ARTISTS / PRODUCED BY / REOL PRODUCTIONS CORPORATION." The poster artwork was obtained from the collection at the University of California, Los Angeles. The artist is unknown.

BLACK AND TAN

Released in 1929, the 19-minute film Black and Tan features Duke Ellington and his Cotton Club Orchestra performing "The Duke Steps Out," "Black Beauty," and "Black and Tan Fantasy."

Black and Tan is chiefly remembered as the first film appearance of composer, pianist, and bandleader Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974). The film was written and directed by Dudley Murphy, who later directed the 1933 film The Emperor Jones starring Paul Robeson.

In Black and Tan, Duke Ellington plays himself, but as an impoverished musician. When two bumbling movers arrive to repossess his piano, his girlfriend--actress Fredi Washington, also playing herself -- manages to hold them off by offering them gin. Later, at the nightclub, an ailing Washington performs in an enthusiastic dance number despite her ill health. On her deathbed, she asks him to perform "Black and Tan Fantasy," secure in the knowledge that she has helped Ellington continue to make music.

The poster for Black and Tan depicts Duke Ellington in silhouette conducting caricatured representations of his orchestra. Text on the poster reads "SACK / AMUSEMENT / ENTERPRISES / PRESENTS / DUKE ELLINGTON / AND HIS / COTTON CLUB ORCHESTRA / IN / BLACK AND TAN / WITH / FREDI WASHINGTON." The Texas-based company Sack Amusement Enterprises was a producer and distributor of features and short films for African-American audiences during the 1930s and 1940s. The poster artist is unknown.

CALDONIA

Released in 1945, the 18-minute short film Caldonia showcased the talents of singer, saxophonist, and bandleader Louis Jordan (1908-1975).

In Caldonia, Louis Jordan, playing himself, is lured to New York by Felix Paradise, who promises him a film career. In the process, Jordan loses a promising Hollywood contract and Caldonia, his girlfriend. The short film features four songs by Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five: "Buzz Me," "Caldonia," "Honey Chile," and "Tillie."

Known as "King of the Jukeboxes" or "King of the Bobby Sox Brigade," Jordan began his career playing big band swing jazz music during the 1930s but later became one of the leading players of "jump blues," a hybrid of jazz, blues, and other elements that included a smaller band, humorous lyrics, and a strong rhythm section. A celebrity who appeared in numerous movies, Jordan was one of the top American recording artists of the 1940s and 1950s. He was known as "the father of rhythm and blues." He is also remembered as one of the first black recording artists to achieve "crossover" appeal with white audiences.

Although first shown together, the musical performances in Caldonia were also separated into individual "soundies." Soundies were short films that were played on video jukeboxes in nightclubs and restaurants during the 1940s. Today they are especially remembered for featuring performances by African-American artists, and Louis Jordan is often cited for his prominent role in these precursors to today's music videos.

The poster for Caldonia features a photograph of Louis Jordan carrying his saxophone around his neck and wearing a top hat and a zoot suit with a bow tie, pink topcoat, and burgundy-and-yellow striped pants. Three smaller photographs of women appear in the lower right. The title of the film appears at the bottom of the poster. Captions on the poster refer to Jordan as "KING OF THE BOBBY SOX BRIGADE / IN A JIVE AN' JAM PACKED MUSICAL." A box in the lower left reads: "HEAR HIM / SING / 'HONEY CHILE' / 'BUZZ ME' / 'TILLIE' / 'CALDONIA.'" The poster slogan "HERE COMES MR. LOUIS JORDAN" is a humorous reference to the film Here Comes Mr. Jordan, an Oscar-winning 1941 film about a saxophone-playing boxer who returns from Heaven for a second chance to win the championship.

PRINCESS TAM-TAM

Released in France in 1935 and later in the United States, the French-produced Princess Tam-Tam was one of only four movies to feature an acting performance by American-born entertainer Josephine Baker.

Filmed in France and Tunisia, Princess Tam-Tam tells the story of a famous novelist, played by French actor Albert Prejean, who travels to Africa after an argument with his socialite wife. While attempting to overcome writer's block, he is charmed by a simple African woman, played by Baker. He subsequently presents her as a princess to Parisian society in an attempt to arouse the jealousy of his wife, while also hoping to use the resulting story as the plot for his next book.

A renowned entertainer, Josephine Baker (1906-1975) was born in St. Louis, MO. After touring the United States with traveling road shows, she soon became known for a style of dancing marked by a comic touch. When she performed in Paris during the 1920s, her career thrived, and she was soon one of the most popular performers in Europe. She became a French citizen in 1937.

Princess Tam-Tam featured Baker's exuberant dancing and her performances of two songs. Although the French-language film was little known in the U.S. at the time, it is now considered a rare film-length showcase for Baker's talents.

The poster for Princess Tam-Tam was used to promote the release of the movie in Denmark. It features an illustration of a glamorous Josephine Baker casting a large shadow behind her. Baker's name appears prominently at the top of the poster, while red, white, and blue stripes run at angles down the left and right margins. At the bottom of the poster, the title of the film is given as "Prinsesse Tam-Tam." The title is in Danish, as is all cast and credit information that follows it.

HALLELUJAH

Released by MGM in 1929, Hallelujah was one of the first films from a major studio to feature an all-black cast.

Hallelujah starred Daniel L. Haynes as Zeke, a field laborer who is seduced away from his family and community by the temptations of the world. Producer-director King Vidor hoped to create an authentic portrayal of rural African-American life, especially religious experience, by filming on location in Arkansas and Tennessee despite the technical challenges involved in doing so.

Enhanced by spirituals performed by the Dixie Jubilee Singers, Hallelujah also starred blues singer Victoria Spivey as Zeke's hometown love interest and Nina Mae McKinney as the city woman who cons and seduces him. Later billed in Europe as "The Black Garbo," the 16-year-old McKinney performs the Irving Berlin song "Swanee Shuffle" in Hallelujah.

Although not free of stereotypes, Hallelujah was praised by black and white critics alike and found many black defenders. In the October 1929 issue of the NAACP magazine The Crisis, W.E.B. DuBois wrote that the film offered "the sense of real life" and concluded that "everybody should see Hallelujah." More recently, film historian Thomas Cripps wrote in 1993 that Hallelujah "neatly caught the piety and enthusiasm of rural religion, while only occasionally lapsing into stereotyped gamblers and mammies."

King Vidor received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for Hallelujah. He would later direct the black-and-white scenes in The Wizard of Oz as well as the 1956 film War and Peace.

The poster for Hallelujah shows a drawing of a female dancer above several musicians. The movie title runs across the top of the poster, and a caption to the left reads: "A KING VIDOR PRODUCTION." The original poster artwork for this 1929 film was created by prominent caricaturist Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003), whose work also appeared on the five Comedians stamps in 1991 and the ten Stars of the Silent Screen stamps in 1994. The poster was used with permission of the Margo Feiden Galleries Ltd., New York.

An American-expatriate in France, Baker was a singer and entertainer considered a creole goddess. Adorned in feathers and beads, from her first show in Paris she instantly attracted loyal fans and became a muse for Dior, authors like Fitzgerald, and artists such as Picasso. While she was Venus to the French, she wasn't worthy even among the D-list ranks in America. Her shows in the US were critical failures just as her status in France had skyrocketed. She permanently relocated to France where she and her diamond collared Cheetah were rightfully appreciated on the stage.

Baker lived a full life outside of the limelight as well. During her career peak, she helped the resistance forces during Nazi-occupied France by smuggling intelligence in her sheet music. Later, she supported the American civil rights movement. And, as the original Angelina Jolie, she adopted 12 children, each from a different country in the world.

Foreword to Directory of Blacks in the Performing Arts by Edward Mapp
To the unknowing, “Show

Foreword to Directory of Blacks in the Performing Arts by Edward Mapp

To the unknowing, "Show business" can be an illusive invalid as well as a glamorous occupation. There was a time, however, when for the black performer, it was not too illusive nor was it an invalid. For many years, being in show business was fabulous and most times glamorous. It was fabulous in 1821 when the African Company, with John Hewlett as its star, presented the classics at Brown's Theatre on Bleecker and Mercer Sts., in what was later to become Greenwich Village. The company was so successful that they graciously made a partition in the back of the house to accommodate the whites. It was fabulous when Ira Aldridge was world famous for his portrayals of Othello and the Moor in "Titus Andronicus"; when the black performer decided to make some of the big money being made by the minstrel shows that imitated him by imitating the imitators; and when the Lafayette Players sent two acting companies a season with such stars as Laura Bowman, Abbie Mitchell, Clarence Brooks, Frank Wilson, Rose McClendon and many others.

When Harlem had little theatre groups like the Allied Re players, the Rose McClendon Players, The American Negro Theatre, The Suitcase Theatre and various church groups -- these groups were the proving grounds for Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Frederick O'Neal, Earle Hyman, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Alice Childress and on and on -- these were more of the fabulous days! It was fabulous when Williams and Walker captured the crowned heads of Europe with their production of "In Dahomey," and when Broadway would present at least two major black productions a year, such as "Shuffle Along," "Liza," "Africana," "Running Wild," "Chocolate Dandies," "Blackbirds," "7 Come 11," plus large touring musicals like "The Models," and "Desires." The glamor was evident when we had not two but many film stars like Clarence Muse, Nina Mae McKinney, Daniel Haynes and matinée idol, Lorenzo Tucker.

It was fabulous when Oscar Micheaux, Toddy and Million Dollar Films produced rather good films without using the trite racial conflicts so overworked by Hollywood. I might add that Oscar Micheaux produced, wrote, directed and edited his films and we haven't had one black person or company attempt to take his place in this lucrative field that has a ready market hungry for such a product. No, the films were not all fabulous, nor were the stage productions, but the artists were great and they were able to learn and practice their trade in the only way possible...by working at it.

It was fabulous when every social gathering hired a black band and the choices were Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Noble Sissle, Eddie South, Chick Webb, or one of many small singing and playing combos all over the country; when Harlem was peppered with night spots like the Cotton Club, Dickie Wells', Connie's 101 Ranch, and the Plantation, with full stage shows and not just weekend combos; when Harlem had not just one theatre with stage presentations, but the Lafayette, the Odeon, the Lincoln and the Alhambra with full stage shows every night in the week; when variety theatres over the country didn't feel that they had a good "bill" unless there was a black act starred; when the performer could be certain of at least fifty weeks a year on tour, with shows managed, written and staged by blacks; and when there were scores of chorus girls and show girls plus many singing and dancing novelty acts.

From these opportunities came the stars like Florence Mills, George Walker, Josephine Baker, Bessie Smith, Ada Ward, Ethel Waters, Bob Cole and Bert Williams. It was fabulous when we had serious singers like Caterina Jarboro, Marian Anderson, Etta Moten, Roland Hayes, Hall Johnson Choir, Paul Robeson, and Black Patti and when we had the Helmsley Winfield Dancers, the Van Grona Negro Ballet and the always working and touring Katherine Dunham group. It was fabulous when we had comics like Tim Moore, and a host of fine straight men like Slick Chester. These performers would be tops today without the aid of the black face make-up that was their stock in trade.

I don't want to convey the notion that we don't have great artists today, for we well know that we have. I am saying, however, that we have too few in some fields and none at all in others. Sadder still is the fact that we have few places for our talented young people to get their feet wet and few producres to give them the opportunity to prove their talent. If you look into the backgrounds of the stars of today, such as Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, and Sammy Davis, Jr., you will find that they all started in small bistros, churches, and experimental theatres in Harlem or in their hometowns where their own people had faith in their ability and gave them the initial help and chance of exposure to eventually make the grade. Believe me when I tell you the big Broadway agents didn't snap them up for the big money jobs until they were well on their way to stardom. I have said all this to express that, if the old invalid of black show business would throw away the crutch of the white producer, director, writer and agent and would crawl backward, black performers just might once again become fabulous and success not so illusive.

The names in this Directory are those show biz folk who have achieved recognition in some way and who serve as building blocks to inspire those who are still unknown in the performing arts

There is sterility in travel.

In the life of a transient
flyers are more attentive
more available than a mother
they cling even while you pretend to slip
their salutations through the sweatiness of a smug
refusal to their hand-out
smiling aimlessly into guilt.

Xeroxed remindful-ness
nonsensical rhymes like the gossiped
3 little pigs
waiting for wings
with the at last wolf's huff
puff
scatter
lift
fall
litter
In some states, the crack Nicodemus cooks
over an imagined 3D fire,
Peddling flyers is illegal.

A private high to renegotiate with useless ribbons
dyed in cheap concoctions
breaking the pattern of dancing alone
2 left feet in clowning lady bug red slippers.

Balancing the morning's potential
Nicodemus takes another sip on a foamy avoid
and another automatic take leads to a non-seductive pull
pushing out a fog of little things
then freestyle walking with the others
to the metallic mechanical whale in leather
Italian shoes--a hurtful gift to walk into--
an awkward promise
too expensive for a puzzle
too complicated by childlike bawlings
too put together for an unfinished look:
should Nicodemus get a gentleman's hair cut
some new gentleman's clothing
maybe a recycled seran wrapped ear-piece
a hobo's cup maybe?

Nicodemus finds a gigantic white suit to walk behind
a gorilla godzilla weaving through the crowd of modern mules
with galloping torsos
the elephants leap over the zebras
shitting on themselves
racing to the elevator
where the monkey grins
an inaugurated show of white teeth desperations
drones away
pushes the button

to the metallic mechanical whale
we go
we go
we go
they sing
hungover
asthmatic
xenophobe claustrophobics
zip locked into nooks and knots
there is no air left in the X-box
the shouldered remains are an exchange
borrowed perseverance
sweetness to lull sensibilities senseless.

Nicodemus makes perfect penmanship:
One last cry to say goodbye...
Those left behind
with bed sheet creases to line their faces
forever looking for that mirror
to say, to say
goodnight sun
say goodnight.

Descending deliberately deeper
into the belly
an impatient metallic mechanical whale
gives many times to prepare
assorted ornaments for listlessness
discarded in a jungle of little things.

Words to blacklist, like Polished
error free sentences.
Can words collect filth
can they take a bullet?
I'll wash, then, hang them out
on my bambooed words line.
I'd like to hang ORIGINAL out to dry.

Now BRILLIANT is a word
worth moving your lips to
Drunk
ard
bRIL
LI
ANCE!!

To lose all your teeth--
Just BRILLIANT!

A day can conceive a Jezebel--
BRILLIANT!

A day can turn on a not so clever Jezebel--
BRILLIANT!

To Jump like Christopher Robbin's Tigger--
BRILLIANT!

Sing Hoorah like a Pooh Bear--
BRILLIANT!

We all fall down--
Absolutely BRILLIANT!
The metallic mechanical whale comes
just whimper like a Piglet

RED LIGHT
GREEN LIGHT

We all fall deliberately further
into the belly of the whale
it eats up time
racing through a riptide void
it comes up for air on 125th
then dives back into
BRILLIANT!

To avoid everything shameful
in a little thing as a look can reveal
while riding the metallic mechanical whale
Nicodemus discovers the wonders of anonymity.
When asked why the dark shades
Nicodemus, irritated, takes them off and renders:
There's nothing worse than a loquacious eye
blinking when they're unsure of what's coming
backstabbing eyes
darting back into tortoise shells of
Of Course, Of Course!
Indeed, Indeeds!
One day
we'll congregate in the metallic mechanical whale
wearing nothing but baby powder. And in a circle of all of us
we'll each have turns
Saying, "TADA! Think Josephine Baker."

Wearing necessary discoveries
Nicodemus becomes a fly
on a wall in a room
the whale's hard plastic mirrors
gives many eyes as a fly
on a wall in a room
witnessing the fleeting speed of gossip
spying for secrets:
knickers exposed
mouths open
buggered noses
Nicodemus the ethnographic scientist:

What's the difference between
a zombie in a zoot suit and a bullfrog
hoping, hoping, to make it to the nearest exit?

Hushed! into a little thing
fitting nicely in a palm, in a pocket
iPods, discmen, walkmen hands
bury the most imitated moment
the intoxicating high of death.

Hushed! into a little thing
Nicodemus mediates electric
staring at Billy Graham's poster
"God. Loves. You." Next to graffiti scribbles
"Are you a sinner? I'm afraid so!"

Magnetic in the fingers
toes
weird looking circuits
hungrily standing bold
burning on the chest.

Caught in fitful fantasy
the main event explodes
as shoulders are gone first
showing off an offering
tap
tap
tap
yes
yes
yes of the feet and head in deserted praise.

In the belly of the metallic mechanical whale
it eats up time
blue lightening
thundering through caves.
Another whale rides next to Nicodemus's.
Looking in
seeing nothing but an overpriced pastry dish
Nicodemus diddles:

Just as neighbors ought to be
this is yours and this is mine
we'll be pleasant in the living area
and say, "How do you do?"
We'll each have our own cupboards
to put the complaints in.

Fortjener hun kongekvinnetittelen? Jeg lover deg! Josephine Baker er ikke din ordinære banandanser.

Josephine Baker opplevde opptøyene i East St. Louis, Illinois. She is all that and a piece of pie.

Marianne (fransk datter),

Koffi (côte d'Ivoirean sønn),

Mara (venezuelansk sønn),

Noël (fransk sønn),

Stellina (marrokansk datter).

Hun kalte familien sin for The Rainbow Tribe. Alle barna fikk opplæring i sitt opprinnelige morsmål.

Miss Josephine Baker was born into poverty in 1906 but would grow up to be one of the most in-demand French cabaret performers of her time. Off stage she devoted her life to fighting prejudice. The slums of St. Louis could not hold this woman down as she left home at the age of 13 to pursue her dream of the stage. Her break came in 1921 when she began to get notice on the stages of New York City. She quickly became a star throughout Harlem and began to grace the stage of such jazz landmarks as the Cotton Club. Baker made the move to Paris in 1925 to perform for audiences more accustomed to her brazen sexuality and minimal costumes. By the '30s, Baker was owning her own club, starring in films, and recording her own records. Back in America to perform alongside Bob Hope in Ziegfeld's Follies, Baker began to meet resistance due to both her sexuality and skin color, as conservatives rallied against the show. She quickly fled back to Paris and became a naturalized citizen. About that time, the Nazis invaded so Baker found herself working for the resistance and going as far as to smuggle sensitive documents out of France. She even worked as a sub-lieutenant for the French Air Force's Women's Auxiliary, volunteered for the Red Cross, and performed for the troops. She was later awarded military medals for her brave work. By the '50s, Baker was back in America where she used her fame in the fight for Civil Rights by demanding to perform in front of segregated audiences. After retiring from the stage, Baker spent her time raising her racially-mixed brood of 12 adopted children and stayed active in the struggle for equal rights. Josephine Baker passed away of natural causes in her sleep in the early hours of April 12, 1975, following the opening night of a revue in honor of her fifty years in show business. In the crowd that night were the likes of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, Sophia Loren, Mick Jagger, Shirley Bassey, Diana Ross and Liza Minelli. Opening night received rave reviews.

Known as "rey de los tambores," or King of the Drums, Tata Guines was an Afro-Cuban conga drum master. Born in Cuba, he came to the United States in the 1950s and worked with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra and Josephine Baker. He moved back to Cuba after the revolution mostly due to his dislike of the segregation he encountered in the US. Guines died of a kidney infection in Havana.
