French Open champion Ana Ivanovic slumped to another dispiriting defeat on Wednesday when she was knocked out of the Kremlin Cup by unseeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova.

Serbian golden girl Ivanovic, who rose to the world number one spot after her triumph at Roland Garros in June, has seen her career plunge into freefall and she arrived in Moscow having won just five matches in five events since her Grand Slam breakthrough.

The fourth seed fared no better against the 19-year-old Cibulkova, losing 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4) despite having two match points in the 10th game of the third set.

"I'm healthy, enjoying my time on the court and just happy to be back competing. I'm just trying to get as many matches as I can; it'll take take to get back to my best," said Ivanovic who has been plagued by a thumb injury.

Ivanovic, 20, now fifth in the world, broke three times in the first set to claim the opener in 36 minutes.

Ana Ivanovic needs to take the rest of the season off. She's won five matches since May. Five. She lost today to Dominka Cibulkova, 6-3, 2-6, 6-7, wasting two match points. If Ana goes to Doha, she's just going to get embarrassed playing like this. Unless, she seriously thinks she can play through this slump, she needs to call it a season.

Alright, Ana, how do I put this lightly? Get your shit together. Just a few months ago you were on top of the world, hot off your first grand slam victory. You've gone 4-4 since. Yes, I know you've had some injuries, but they're not entirely to blame. Losing to Headcase of the World, Nadia Petrova, is inexcusable for a top rranked player. Right now your game is wreck. And your new racquet is ugly. Do us all a favor and take some time off, okay? The last thing the WTA needs right now is another hot mess.

What a year it was for grand slam tennis. With the last major of the year drawing to a close in New York, I think this is the perfect time to look back at the year that was. Let's begin after the cut, shall we?

Australian Open

Maria Sharapova was back with a vengence, crushing all opposition, and put an end to Justine Henin's six month winning streak with a bagel to boot. Maria didn't drop a set, beating Ana Ivanovic in the final for her third slam title.

Curse you, Mash's right shoulder! Think of what she could have done if she hadn't gotten hurt at Indian Wells.

Novak Djokovic became Djerkovic during his run to his first grand slam title, beating Monofed in the semis and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final.

Let's just pretend Jo-Wilfried won.

Roland Garros

Ana Ivanovic finally broke through with her first major title at the French.

Who cares if the average ranking of her opponents was like 98? A major is a major.

Rafael Nadal redefined "domination" as he stormed through the draw on the red clay of Paris.

Rafa conceded only four games to Roger Federer in the final and won his fourth consecutive French Open crown.

Wimbledon

If Rafa is the king of clay, then Venus Williams is the queen of grass. In a women's draw that saw the top four seeds fall before the quarters, Venus blazed through the draw.

Venus took home the Venus Rosewater Dish for the fifth time, defeating sister Serena in the final.

Rafael Nadal set out to do what no man had done since 1980, win both the French and Wimbledon in the same year.

On championship Sunday, in fading light, Rafa took out five time defending champion, Roger Federer, 9-7 in the fifth set in perhaps the greatest match that will ever be played. Fed didn't lose this match, Rafa won it.

U.S. Open

Every once in a while Serena Williams reaches a level that no one else can get to. It happened at this year's U.S. Open.

Serena took the title for the third time, without dropping a set.

Roger Federer entered the U.S. Open with the prospect of going slam-less for the first time since 2002 staring him right in the face.

Fed handled the pressure beautifully and won his fifth consecutive Open title, crushing Andy Murray in the final.

The US Open 2008 took one day longer than planned. Because of heavy rain on Saturday Women's & Men's final were delayed each by one day. Here a review of the second week from Flushing Meadows...

Women's Singles:

On Friday we had four semifinalists - all of the would become the new world No. 1 if she wins the US Open after Ana Ivanovic lost early. In the end Serena Williams won in front of her home crowd...

Final:

[4] Serena Williams (USA) def. [2] Jelena Jankovic (SRB) 6-4 7-5
Serena Williams is the Queen of New York! Because of the rain on Saturday the final was played on Sunday. In a really exciting final Serena won 6-4 7-5 over Jelena Jankovic who played her first Slam final in her career. It's the 9th Grand Slam title for Serena Williams who became world #1 again. Jankovic led in both sets with a break but couldn't hold them... Although she played a great match.

Notable results:

4th round:
No big surprises in the top half of round 4. All favourites won their matches. Italian Flavia Pennetta is maybe the most unexpected player to win but she had no problems with French Amelie Mauresmo. The dream runs of German qualifier Anna-Lena Groenefeld and French wildcard player Severine Bremond were stopped in the 4th round.

--- [16] Flavia Pennetta (ITA) def. [32] Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) 6-3 6-0
(other results of round 4 you can read in the 1st week review)

Quarterfinals:
All eight players in the quarters were seeded. And all better seeded players won their matches. The most exciting match was the duel between Williams sisters Serena & Venus. Venus won the last match in Wimbledon finals but this time Serena Williams won in a very close match in two tiebreaks.

--- [6] Dinara Safina (RUS) def. [16] Flavia Pennetta (ITA) 6-2 6-3

Semifinals:
Serena Williams & Jelena Jankovic are the finalists of the US Open 2008. Williams won in the semis vs. Olympic runner-up Dinara Safina who played not as good as in the last months. Elena Dementieva who won Gold in Beijing lost in a for her disappointing match vs. Serbian Jelena Jankovic who reached a Grand Slam final for the first time in her career.

The world's best women doubles team Cara Black & Liezel Huber became US Open champion.

Men's Singles:

Same procedure as every year. Roger Federer stays unbeaten since 2004 and won his 5th US Open title. And World #1 Rafael Nadal? He reached the semis but Andy Murray was too strong. Federer shows all his class on his way to the title...

Roger Federer takes his 5th consecutive US Open title! And he shows all his pundits that his time is not over. He played awesome tennis and defeated a tired Scotsman Andy Murray 6-2 7-5 6-2. Murray who played his first Grand Slam final in his career started good but then Federer shows all his class. In the end Murray had no chance but played a great tournament and defeated World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the semis...

Notable results:

4th round:
Rafael Nadal had some problems with Sam Querrey but Roger Federer had much bigger problems with Igor Andreev. The Swiss was close to an early exit. Federer had to fight over five thrilling sets to beat the Russian. Novak Djokovic played a five setter vs. Spaniard Tommy Robredo too. The big surprise of the Men's draw is still qualifier Gilles Muller from Luxembourg. He kicked 5th seed Nikolay Davydenko in four sets out of the tournament.

Quarterfinals:
All favourites reached the semis. Rafael Nadal had to play four sets vs. Mardy Fish from the USA. More problems than expected had Roger Federer with Gilles Muller but finished the match in three. Serbian Novak Djokovic played solid vs. Andy Roddick. The most exciting match of the quarters was Andy Murray vs. shootingstar Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina.

--- [1] Rafael Nadal (ESP) def. Mardy Fish (USA) 3-6 6-1 6-4 6-2

Semifinals:
Roger Federer is on his way to his 5th consecutive US Open title. In a great semifinal vs. 3rd seed Novak Djokovic from Serbia he won in four sets - before the big rain came. The match between Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray was interrupted by the rain so they continued on Sunday. It was a great match too and World No. 1 Rafael Nadal lost in the end vs. an Andy Murray who played on maybe his highest level!

[caption id="attachment_269" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Serena Williams"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_270" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Jelena Jankovic"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_271" align="aligncenter" width="210" caption="Ana Ivanovic"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_272" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Dinara Safina"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_273" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Maria Sharapova"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_279" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Elena Dementieva"][/caption]

While we’re awaiting the US Open women’s final between Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic, let’s give some time to the player missed most at this tournament – Maria Sharapova. You know Maria had to withdraw because of a persistent shoulder injury, and she might even be missing the rest of the season, but that doesn’t mean the Russian fashionista hadn’t prepared some cool outfits for the final Grand Slam of the year. Here are the Nike dresses Sharapova would have been wearing hadn’t she skipped the event. The blue dress was supposed to be worn by day, while the black one was made for the night.

Serena Williams beat Severine Bremond 6-2 6-2 in the fourth round of the US Open and set up a quarterfinal clash with sister Venus. Although happy to advance, the sisters are disappointed that they need to face each other so early into the tournament.

"It sucks," said Serena.

"It sucks that it can't be the final. At least the semis. It's so soon. It's just disappointing to be so soon."

Serena and Venus Williams dominated the US Open for four years – Serena won the title in 1999 and 2002 and her older sister in 2000 and 2001. They are now the only Grand Slam champions left in the draw, plus, they haven’t dropped a set yet in the tournament.

Leander Paes continued his winning run to advance to the mixed doubles' semifinals but it was curtains for Mahesh Bhupathi at the US Open here.

Paes, already through to the men's doubles quarterfinals with partner Czech Lukas Dlouhy, teamed up with Zimbabwean Cara Black in the mixed doubles competition.

The fifth-seeded duo defeated the Czech pair of Martin Damm and Vladimira Uhlirova 7-5, 6-2. Paes and Black will now take on the Swedish-Russian team of Jonas Bjorkman and Nadia Petrova in the last-four stage.

Bhupathi, who was earlier ousted from the mixed doubles competition, crashed out of the men's doubles with a stunning third-round loss.

The Indian and his Bahamian partner Mark Knowles, seeded fourth, squandered a set's advantage to go down 6-2, 4-6, 4-6 to unseeded Argentines Maximo Gonzalez and Juan Monaco in the third round of the season's last Grand Slam.

There was further disappointment in the junior section where fifth seeds Yuki Bhambri and his Serbian partner Filip Krajinovic lost 1-6, 6-5, 7-10 to Zimbabwe's Takanyi Garanganga and Egyptian Karim-Mohamed Maamoun in the first round.

Andy Murray feels right at home amid the glamour and bright lights of the US Open. Playing the last match of the night on Monday with the usual assortment of celebrities in the stands, Murray dominated 10th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. He reached the quarterfinals at the Open for the first time.

Already ranked a career-high No. 6, Murray assured himself a spot in the top five. He could climb to No. 4 if he advances as far as Nikolay Davydenko.

Wimbledon may take place in his native Great Britain, but the 21-year-old Murray relishes the US Open for its glitz. He was thrilled to win with the stars of his favorite TV programme, "Entourage," in the stands.

Murray broke Wawrinka's serve twice to take a 4-0 lead in the first set and cruised from there. He had 38 winners and just 15 unforced errors. Murray has won five of his past seven matchups against fellow top-10 players.

Hala majos.

Women's tennis has a crisis. Since Justine Henin retired no player earned the crow of being World No. 1. Players like Ana Ivanovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova lost early, all other top players played not on a very high level.
But there have been some positive players on the other hand. German qualifier Anna-Lena Groenefeld and French wildcard winner Severine Bremond are still in business and above all Gronefeld showed some attractive tennis...

Anna-Lena Groenefeld & Ekaterina Makarova were the players of the first round. German Groenefeld who had a bad time in the past and made her comeback some weeks ago upset 11th seed Daniela Hantuchova in two easy sets. Russian Makarova won vs. her compatriot and 10th seed Anna Chakvetadze after being a set down.
No. 1 seed Ana Ivanovic had some problems with Vera Dushevina but won in three sets.

2nd round:
The biggest surprise in this second round definitely is the win of qualifier Julie Coin over the world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic. Ivanovic who has had problems with her thumb never showed her quality. On the other hand Julie Coin played maybe the match of her life.
Ivanovic's Serbian compatriot Jelena Jankovic had many problems with Swedish Sofia Arvidsson but won in three close sets. Some other seeded players like Olympic Bronze medalist Vera Zvonareva and Hungarian Agnes Szavay had to say 'goodbye' after the second round.

3rd round:
Anna-Lena Groenefeld is the player of the week. The German qualifier won in the first round vs. Daniela Hantuchova, now - in the 3rd round - French teenager Alizé Cornet was her victim. French wildcard player Severine Bremond is a surprising player too. In the 4th round she'll play vs. Serena Williams.
After Ana Ivanovic the next top player lost. 3rd seed Svetlana Kuznetsova lost in three sets vs. Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik.

Men's Singles:

The male top players are still in business. New World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, titleholder Roger Federer and last year's runner-up Novak Djokovic all in all had not much problems to reach the 4th round. The player of the week is qualifier Gilles Muller from Luxembourg who won two five-setters after being 0-2 sets down.

Notable results:

1st round:
German qualifier Bjorn Phau was supposed to be an easy opponent for Olympic Gold medalist Rafael Nadal but it was hard work for the new World No. 1. Phau fought but in the end Nadal won in straight sets.
There were some exciting five-setter in the first round. The most exciting perhaps was the win of unseeded German Tommy Haas over French star Richard Gasquet. The most surprising winners in round one were Japanese Kei Nishikori (won vs. Juan Monaco) and German qualifier Andreas Beck (won vs. John Isner).

2nd round:
In round two there were not much upsets. Only the wins of Mardy Fish over Paul-Henri Mathieu and of qualifier Gilles Muller over German Tommy Haas were surprising. Portuguese qualifier Rui Machado was close to an upset vs. 13th seed Fernando Verdasco from Spain but in the end the favourite took hold.
All top stars and favourites mostly have easy wins. Merely last year's semifinalist David Ferrer from Spain and Scot Andy Murray had to fight in close matches.
3rd round:
This round there were some surprises and some exciting five-setters. Seeded players like James Blake, David Nalbandian and David Ferrer lost. Especially Gaucho David Nalbandian made a very poor performance vs. Gael Monfils.
Stanislas Wawrinka and Andy Murray both fought back after being 0-2 sets down. Luxembourgian qualifier Gilles Muller has been the most surprising player of the tournament so far. After winning over Tommy Haas after being 0-2 sets down he succeed the same way vs. 18th seed Nicolas Almagro from Spain.

World Top Seed Tennis player Jelena Jankovic won another sneaker squeaker, playing 28 points in the last game to finish off Zheng Jie 7-5, 7-5 Friday and become the first woman into the fourth round at the U.S. Open.

Jankovic needed more than two hours to beat the 37th-ranked Zheng after playing for nearly three hours in the second round. Plus, the Serbian star was scheduled to play doubles later in the day.

The World No. 2 Jankovic is aiming to reach her first Grand Slam final. She needs three more wins — with Justine Henin retired, Maria Sharapova injured, Ana Ivanovic eliminated and the Williams sisters in the opposite bracket, this figures to be her best chance.

Jankovic came out full of energy, showing no ill effects of a bad left leg that cramped after she played in this match.

Jankovic is one of six women who still have a chance to be ranked No. 1 after the Open, with Ivanovic among them despite her loss.

A shell-shocked Ana Ivanovic was unceremoniously tossed out of the U.S. Open on Thursday (August 28) by an obscure Frenchwoman who had never played a tour-level match before arriving at Flushing Meadows.

Julie Coin set alight the Arthur Ashe Stadium court when she produced the match of her life to shatter the world number one's title hopes in the second round with a 6-3 4-6 6-3 walloping.

That she had never played a match on the WTA Tour, let alone at grand slam before this week failed to faze the 188th ranked Coin and she sealed the Serbian's fate after one hour 57 minutes of high drama.

As Coin celebrated her moment of triumph by slamming a ball high into the stands and holding her arms aloft to lap up the applause from the hollering fans, a dejected Ivanovic was left to dwell on the worst showing by a women's top seed at the U.S. Open since 1966.

Coin's compatriot Severine Bremond and Italy's Tathiana Garbin continued a day of upsets. Bremond secured a 7-5 6-3 win over 20th seed Nicole Vaidisova and Garbin beat Hungarian 13th seed Agnes Szavay 5-7 6-2 6-3.

The fading memory of her two title-winning runs at Flushing Meadows spurred Venus Williams to hit top gear on Thursday.

Williams looked set to hand Paraguay's Rossana De Los Rios the dreaded whitewash after bagging the first seven games but eventually cantered to a 6-0 6-3 win.

In her two matches so far, she has dropped only eight games and is determined to maintain her ruthless streak as she bids to pick up the trophy for a third time following her triumphs in 2000 and 2001.

Russian Dinara Safina also appeared to be a hurry to reach the last 32 and had it not been for her lapses in concentration, she would have beaten Italy's Roberta Vinci more emphatically than suggested by the final 6-4 6-3 scoreline.

American ninth seed James Blake emerged unscathed but seemed set for another marathon encounter until his Belgian opponent Steve Darcis was forced to quit with a back injury. The American, a five-set winner in his opening match, was leading 4-6 6-3 1-0 on Thursday when
Darcis retired.

British sixth seed Andy Murray dug deep to reach the third round, beating Frenchman Michael Llodra 6-4 1-6 7-5 7-6 in a tough test of his title credentials.

World number 38 Llodra outplayed the Scot in the second set and had two set points to force a decider but Murray held on to set up a clash with Austrian Juergen Melzer.

One break gave Murray the first set but Llodra attacked his second serve to great effect in the second to level the match.

After snatching the third set, Murray twice recovered from a break down in the fourth to force a tiebreak and then saved two set points before winning it 9-7 to clinch victory.

Coin bt Ivanovic

6-3, 4-6, 6-3

A shock round 2 defeat for the women's number 1 Ana Ivanovic, she looked very nervous in her opening match which she scraped though in 3 sets, managing to keep her cool at the death. This game though her nerves got the better of her and she gifted games away, she did show flashes of excellence however being labelled top seed you are expected to keep your cool under pressure.

Nothing taken away from Julie Coin who has never been in such a pressured situation, she really played with no fear, the first set she dominated Ivanovic and hit some powerful winners to take it 6-3, Ivanovic battled back second set getting the early break and using her experience to get the upper hand.

The final set ended up an emotional battle and one of the best sets I have seen so far this tournament, both women gave it their all and both making big unforced errors, but it was Ivanovic who really gifted the game at the end, and Coin took full advantage.

Ivanovic's general game is brilliant, I consider her one of the best in her ability, its her mental strength that needs work on, she will most likely lose her number 1 spot at the end of the season. As for Coin, she now has nothing to lose as she has gone past expectations, we'll see how she copes if she meets one of the Williams sisters.

Andy Murry bt Llodra

6-4, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7)

A decent performance by Murray was just good enough to get past the Frenchman Michael Llodra in four sets. Murry would be the first to admit he didn't play his best, and if he is to compete at a higher level he really needs to try and mop these type of games up easily. However, after the first set, which went quite smoothly, Llodra began outsmarting Murray as he exposed Murray's weak and deep shots he likes to play and most of all exposed his second serve.

The second set ended in Murray being broken twice for Llodra to take the second set 6-1. Thankfully, Murray woke up from this in the third and fourth and though Llodra posed a threat, Murray held his nerve and took down both sets to move into the next round.

It was quite a fun game to watch with a baseline player vs a net player, there aren't many net players around these days and Murray adapted well, each game he looks to be maturing and as I keep saying, just needs to sort his attitude a tiny bit more to really compete against the top 3.

Murray's best showdown at a Grand Slam has been a quarter final at Wimbledon against Nadal, so the 21 year old will really look to better that this year and feel like he has a good chance to win.

Tennis på tv:
Julie Coin - Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3
2. runde, US Open

New York Times: This qualifies as big: Top-seeded Ivanovic falls
