Let's face it. The NY Knicks are a horrible sports product. Bad team. Bad management (that is hopefully getting better now that Isiah Thomas is gone). The only reason they have any revenue is because of (1) corporate sales, and (2) convenience of the location of Madison Square Garden and Penn Station.

In recent years the team has not improved. There is no indication this coming year will be any better.
******************
The Knick goal for the next few seasons should be the following:

Clear Salary Cap Room.

Clear More Salary Cap Room.

Get a few solid young players.

SIGN LEBRON JAMES!

When Lebron James becomes a free agent after the 2010 season, the Knicks must sign him. Hopefully, they will have collected a solid group of role players to support him. This will make the Knicks franchise on the rise. Lebron will give us a winning team and he will be largest star in NY. NY should be his the top choice on his list of franchises. Imagine all the opportunities he would have!

But... the rumors are that the NJ Nets (Brooklyn Nets?) may get Lebron James when he becomes a free agent.
If the Nets get Lebron James and have decent mass transit to their new Brooklyn arena, say good-bye to the Knicks. The Nets will become New York's team. And Lebron will still have many of the same opportunities he would have playing for the Knicks.

So... Hopefully, the Knicks are already working on the strategy on how to sign King Lebron James! They need to do whatever it takes!

On April 29, I walked down the road to the local rec center for my first game in a hoops league with 6 guys I'd never met. We lost by 22 points. After the game I remember thinking that I played pretty bad, but the rest of the team sucked and it would be a long season. Not to mention that we didn't have anyone over six feet tall.

Turns out everybody was a bit rusty, Tuesday night, we took a win from that same team that had beaten us by 22 points in the first round of the playoffs. A few minutes later we tipped off the championship game that would be our 6th strait victory to secure the bobble head trophy that we will share Stanley Cup Style throughout the year.

We're taking the next season off since a third of the team will be out of the country, but there was talk of going after a second bobble head in the fall, hopefully after recruiting a proper center.

How did former South Oak Cliff star Darrell Arthur fall so darn far on draft day? A kidney issue.

How did former South Oak Cliff star Darrell Arthur fall so darn far on draft day? A kidney issue. Sports Illustrated's Luke Winn as the details of Arthur's fall from lotto pick to almost out of the first round.

The gist of it, according to Arthur's agent, Jerry Hicks: During medical examinations at the Pre-Draft camp in Orlando at the beginning of the month, Arthur's blood was shown to contain higher-than-normal levels of creatine, which can be a possible indicator of kidney failure or malfunction. "Three teams inquired about those lab results," Hicks told SI.com. "One called, we talked about it for 3-4 minutes, and they expressed no real concern. On the 24th [of June], Philadelphia asked about it, and I asked them, rather than doing additional bloodwork for them that day, when he had his final workout with Washington on the 25th, we'd do it in Washington.

"We did the bloodwork on the morning of the 25th, and by noon, [Arthur's kidneys] were determined to be completely normal. I received a message from Washington -- which is still saved in my voice mail in my office -- that everything was normal. Philadelphia received word that things were normal. How this became an issue around the league is puzzling, to say the least."

It appears that only two of the NBA's 30 teams had the full story on Arthur's kidneys; the rest were working off of the rumor mill, the details of which hit the airwaves by the time the first round hit the mid-20s. ESPN broke into its draft broadcast with a report that Arthur was slipping due to an "undisclosed kidney issue." Arthur's mother, Sandra, who was sitting beside him in the Green Room, looked up at one of the Garden's video screens and shook her head. "I knew something had to have happened to make Darrell not get taken higher," she said, "and that stuff was just not true."

...the Golden State Warriors select former Bama big man Richard Hendrix. That's mid-way through Round 2. No real shock there. Let's hope his career goes a little bit better than another memorable UA alum who played at Golden State. The warriors used their first pick to pick another SEC player, LSU Freshman Anthony Randolph. Randolph was one of 12 freshmen selected on day one of the draft.

On a side note, I really, really want the Memphis Grizzlies to be good. Memphis is the nearest NBA team to my home, but it is a hopelessly run franchise. However, they made a very good selection tonight in that of Kevin Love out of UCLA. Still, one good draft pick doesn't absolve the Grizz for trading Pau Gasol for next to nothing.

UPDATE 11:56PM

And as soon as I spoke of the Grizzlies, they traded Kevin Love and some extras to Minnesota for OJ Mayo and some extras. Memphis loses Mike Miller in the deal, and I'm not sure that Love for Mayo is any more than a lateral move. Screw it, if I'm going to pull for a southern team, it might as well be New Orleans.

He encouraged everyone to look inside themselves to see what gifts God had given them and what they could do to use these skills to improve someone else's life. I am new to blogging - I have read many blogs, some not so positive and many that complain without solution. My focus in my blog will be to always be positive. I am going to take this young man's message to heart and use my gifts to improve someone else's life.

To hear what this young man has been inspired to do, see Austin Gutwein NBC profile news clip. Part 2 is below – do not miss it!

Remember he is 14 and started this when he was 9 years old. He has raised money to build a high school in Africa, a medical center the next year and is on target to build another medical facility next to the high school and 1000 bicycles to help transport the medical supplies to areas that need them most. All this to help in the education of African children, “he has never met”. Educate them on the hazards of AIDS that is devastating the country and leaving children, by the hundreds, orphans.

(Author's Preface: This is the first post on the new F and F blog. Unfortunately, for me, writing comes easier than page layout and design. So, like a restaurant storefront hidden behind scaffolding, please "excuse our appearance" during the construction phase. And please bear with me as I work to get the blog up to "par.")

The NBA draft is tomorrow evening on ESPN, and while the 2008 version does not counter the 2007 entry in terms of a front-loaded tandem, this silver medal selection process offers, as usual, a number of enticing subplots:

        - First, the manner in which this year’s class has, in effect, made a mockery of the NBA’s age limit rule. Take a look at the top seven slots on nbadraft.net’s latest mock draft. Suffice to say that none of these young gentlemen could buy their draft-night celebratory champagne. Besides Westbrook’s four semesters, I wonder how many of the seven would have pit-stopped at school had the rule not been established? And, while it’s inane to argue that this past college basketball season wasn’t improved by a number of prominent freshmen, is this one-and-done maneuver the goal of the rule? And is it helping college basketball and its programs?

        - Second, will there be a sort of “Ainge effect?” Much has been made about the possibility for a number of high-spot deals to be made on draft night. Part of this has to do with the fact that certain players don’t seem to fit with the teams at the top of the pecking order, while other players (youthful as they are) have glaring weaknesses in their game. But, in addition, how can an organization see how Ainge parlayed a fifth pick and sporadic talent into a convincing championship (and an Executive of the Year title) and not try, at least in some small way, to follow the pattern? Will competing executives be more willing to part with the allure of young talent in an attempt to angle for Ainge-like success? In the way that baseball currently savors young prospects, is a move the other way happening in basketball?

        - Thirdly, and most (er?) importantly, who will be the best dressed rookie? Judging by his affinity for shopping at outlets both casual and classy, B-Easy may just be the odds on favorite.

        - Finally, if the NBA Finals taught us anything, it’s that sexy offense can be dismantled by gritty defense. And, while I don’t think the comparison is really fair – the Lakers had a great offense for this year, the Celtics had a great ALL-TIME defense – the old adage about defense and winning was fortified this June. The question now is: will this resounding example affect drafting and how teams are put together in the future?

        God, I hope so.

It’s not that I have anything against offense. Offense is fun, everyone knows that. (Although I am resistant to Arena Football and fully enjoy soccer). In fact, as an East Coast guy, I love staying up late to watch the Suns run or the unstoppable Jazz pick-and-roll. But, ask the fans in Boston if they had fun watching their team grind the Lakers to a screeching halt. Their duck-boat parade should give an answer loud and clear. And isn’t that the whole point of team-building, to celebrate the fruits of labor? Earlier in his tenure, Ainge drafted Marcus Banks and similar players and wanted the up-tempo style a la the Suns. Somewhere along the line that philosophy, that “Vision,” drifted away and an understanding of the true value of defense (and veteran leadership) came in its place.

That brings me to one of my biggest sports pet-peeves: the idea of a role player. For some reason, the guy who scores is the star, and the guy who prevents his guy from scoring is a role player. Isn’t the difference in scores the whole point of the game, anyway? In no other major sport is defense as overlooked as in basketball. In other athletic lands, pitchers and cornerbacks are deemed invaluable.

Is it because in basketball there are more offensive statistics than defensive ones and stats are the simplest and laziest way to measure performance? Could be. Even the few defensive statistics that exist don’t really evaluate defense, as often the steals and blocks leaders are merely rewarded for being gamblers in their own end. I guarantee Lindsay Hunter did not have an impressive box score for the Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals, but he certainly made a contribution.

And it seems, perhaps with a tip-of-the-cap to the Celtics, defense is getting some recognition. The mere fact that Beasley, after insane numbers at Kansas State, may not be one of the top two picks tells us something. ESPN’s Chad Ford made an effort to talk about Beasley in this light, saying, “He is the kind of guy who puts up a 27-12 and gives up a 26-11 on the other end.” I mean, I wasn’t a math major, and I know Beasley is a great player, but that’s a pretty small net positive impact he’s having for his team. Businesses deal with expenses that curtail their gross profits, and because poor defense is a liability, a team roster should be considered in a similar manner.

Great offense is worth celebrating, no doubt about it. It’s energetic, and beautiful, and mirthful. But it is not omnipotent, and it is better to celebrate at the end of the year. Just ask the 2007-08 New England Patriots.
