Also comedy group  Idiots of Ants join the line up at Hoxton Pony - 

The Ants TV work was pilotted as part of BBC3's The Wall and they have recently completed filming on their own show for E4 to be broadcast in August 2008.

They have also just shot a short film for Friends of The Earth with Tomboy Films and have written material for shows such as Channel Four's School of Comedy.

Their most recent success has been their Facebook sketch, 'Facebloke in real life', which has become an 'internet phenomenon' (BBC Online) with over a million YouTube views and counting. 

El Hobbit es un sitio dedicado a seguir todos los acontecimientos previos a la grabación del film. Así que para estar al tanto de todas las novedades que ocurren en la tierra media, no hay nada mejor que visitar El Hobbit. Para este proyecto, el director será Guillermo del Toro, quien anteriormente dirigió El Laberinto del Fauno. Estará acompañado en la producción por Peter Jackson. En el sitio podemos conseguir abundante información sobre estos dos personajes, que dirijirán próximamente el destino de esta historia.

In that time he will direct remakes of old classics Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Slaughterhouse-Five. Plus he's working on an adaptation of Drood, a novel due out next February by author Dan Simmons.

And of course his main priority is his collaboration with Peter Jackson on the Hobbit due out in December 2011.

There's also talk of a final part in the Hellboy trilogy...

E' ufficiale: Guillermo del Toro è stato rimpiazzato da Stephen Sommers per dirigere il film di Tarzan per la Warner Bros.

Quando due anni fa venne annunciato il film, del Toro venne associato al film ma da allora il progetto subì dei rallentamenti e il regista prese altri impegni. Ora che la Warner si è decisa a girare il film, del Toro sarà impegnato per 4 anni nella realizzazione dello Hobbit e del sequel, e così la major ha puntato a un altro regista, decisamente differente.

Sommers, che ha appena terminato le riprese di G.I.Joe, porta con sè anche lo sceneggiatore, che è Stuart Beattie. Insieme, imprimeranno una nuova forma al film, meno aderente alle altre versioni cinematografiche: non si tratterà di un vero e proprio adattamento del romanzo.

Ricordiamo che Stephen Sommers è il regista dei primi due film della Mummia, del Re Scorpione e soprattutto di Van Helsing...

.. that and a multiple of other things are left hanging midway because you are already thinking of the next task that you have to complete before even finishing the one before, including an entry that i was partially working on before I had to run off somewhere. this was what I had down a couple of days ago:

I spent the last 2 days at a workshop meant for the media people at the company I am currently researching on. We were suppose to learn on how to establish and maintain relationships with our most important stakeholders. Instead what I received was a lot of lamenting on the current political state of this country and how the political party that these trainers support is THE right one.

And that was as far as I got to. Truth be told I don't quite remember what I was suppose to say that day. But sitting here reflecting back on that workshop, all I could remember was the trainer's hairy ears. And how he reminds me so much of a hobbit with their excessive hair growth. This guy has hair growing from the side of his ears! And perhaps I have been limited in my exposure to the many different diverse kind of people there are in this world, I had to be amazed to find out that hair could actually grow on the side of your ears. (Now that I think about it, if some people can have hairy bums, whats stopping others to have hairy ears huh?)

Second Life ... I know I said I'd probably never go back to another MMORPG ... or if I didn't, then I probably should have. They have a habit of stealing your life or they certainly do with me. I spent a little over a year on EQ2 ... took a year or so break then spent a little under 18 months on WoW. Since then I have only dabbled in MMO's and only when they are free ... Archlord and Shaiya being my most recent dabbles.

I remember reading about 2nd life while I was playing EQ2 and I even signed up and gave it a blast ... or so I thought ... I'm not entirely sure what it was I played for 10 minutes or so but it just seemed to me to be a 2d map with buildings ... I thought it was boring and pointless and so promptly forgot all about it.

A couple of years ago I remember seeing an episode of CSI that featured the game 2nd life ... to my surprise it showed me an entire 3d world which bore vague references to our own ... I put this down to TV hype and artistic licence as it was obviously not the game I had played but it did make me think of the game again.

Earlier today, I was looking at a list of MMO's on Wikipedia, just to see which ones I had tried when I saw again ... Second Life, out of curiosity, I clicked the link to see what it had to say about this particular game and was presented with information that lead me to believe that TV had actually got it right for once. I proceeded to the Second Life website and downloaded the client.

After installing and starting the game I found myself in the world that is Second Life and immediately began customizing my character without any idea what I was doing ... I found the starting area was far too crowded, and distracting so I teleported to a random shop that had been advertised to me ... I had no money so the shop itself was of no use but it did have a fairly quiet roof and the customization resumed.

After messing around with a few shapes I began gravitating towards a hobbit or dwarf type character (probably from my time in the other games) ... my character was on a quiet roof, changing shape and completely naked (so I could see the shape adjustments clearly).

A young lady then dropped out of the sky a short distance from me on the roof and was watching as I changed ... after a short while she introduced herself and apologised for staring at me in all my glory ... after a brief period we got chatting a bit more about the game ... I asked a few questions, etc. She then had to head off but said I was welcome to 'friend' her and gave me 50 credits or whatever the local currency is ... I promptly did so as she was very helpful.

She asked me to teleport to her location once I had dressed my avatar in what probably amounts to tramp clothes in SL. I teleported to a Greek style temple with water features and the works ... this was her home! I thought to myself 'SB ... she's wadded!' She then invited me around a few avatar boutiques to see what was available to purchase ... my 50 credits weren't going to get me much in these shops ... maybe a belly button. She obviously had money as the dress she was wearing was a world of difference from my rags ... It had textures, transparency, sheen and style. I immediately fell for 2 different avatars in the mall we were in ... A lycanthrope (of course) and A dark angel (big feathery wings ftw :P ).

After many more shops (I even managed to find some free items like a boat, a pipe and a sword ... just for that true hobbit look) I spent a single credit on a shiny 'one ring' (well I just had to ... my precious ...). She then took me to another avatar shop where most of them were what you would call the ideal male in his many guises ... she told me to mention if any stood out to me ... maybe I should point out at this stage that her avatar was what is traditionally classed as beautiful. I mentioned that nothing in that shop was really me but I had liked a couple from the first shop ... I guess I'm a fantasy type guy at heart :). She then whisked me back to the first shop and offered to buy me a new body ... I was stunned and at 1600 minimum credits I had to decline as I'm not even sure that I'm going to play the game much.

We then went back to her place and was chatting a little more when I asked the question ... so do you have a SL shop or does your Real Life pay for your SL. The answer I got was just about the weirdest ever ... She didn't use her actual funds for SL, neither did she have a shop ... she was a Second Life escort ... retired of course.

Now ... If you're like me then you're probably wondering why there is even the need for virtual escorts and in all honesty ... I don't think I can fully get my head around it. My 1st reaction was to thank her for the free time she has given me when she could have been earning money but I thought that might have been a little rude and insensitive so I stumbled into asking her why people would need a virtual escort, her reply was simply ... pixels or no pixels, people are people ... very profound I know but then it seems she is a profound kinda gal.

A little after that I needed to log but I did thank her for giving me such a great introduction to the game and will most definitely be in contact with her when I'm next in SL.

I'm obviously not going into the intricacies of SL as like I said ... it's not a review but it does highlight the difference between SL and the other games ... I never once heard of an elf or night-elf pimping themselves out to pay for a certain lifestyle in EQ2 or WoW but it would seem perfectly natural in SL ... she has been playing for 2 years ... in those two years she became an escort and made enough money for early retirement in a life of luxury ... makes me wonder what the demand is for hobbit gigolo's ;)

Second Life ... give it a try ... it's bloody weird and if you see a wolf or dark-angel called SB Mistwallow, then I either gave in to my rich benefactor or there is an exhausted hobbit lurking behind that avatar :D

„Nö.“ behauptete ich und zog einen Schmollmund.  Was natürlich gelogen war, denn es ging mir erheblich besser als es mir bei seiner Ankunft vor einer Stunde ging – im Gegensatz zu seinem Hemd, das nun dank meiner Tränen wirklich eklige schwarze Mascaraflecken aufwies.

„Schwindelst Du?“ 

„Nö.“ 

Wir lagen auf dem Sofa, wie so oft in den letzten zwölf Jahren, mein Kopf auf seinem Schoß, und ich versteckte mein Gesicht schnell an seinem Bauch, damit er mein Grinsen nicht sah.

„Irgendwann kommst Du für solche Lügen in die Hölle, Elfchen.“  Er lachte sein tiefes Hobbitlachen und drehte mit der Hand mein Gesicht, so dass er mir in die Augen schauen konnte.  

Blaugrau, wie der Hobbitsee, kurz versank ich, und sagte dann, wieder an der Oberfläche angekommen:“ Ich fühl mich Zewa.“

„Was?“  fragte er verblüfft, „Wie bitte schön fühlt sich Zewa?“  „Benutzt.“ knurrte ich.

Wieder wurde mein Kopf dank eines kräftigen Lachers durchgeschüttelt, aber diesmal konnte ich nicht einstimmen, weil ich zu beschäftigt damit war, die nächste Tränenflut runterzuschlucken.

„Mensch, Elfchen.“  Nun schauten seine Augen ernst. „Das ist ein hartes und ungerechtes Urteil.“

„Ich weiß.“ Seufzend setzte ich mich auf. „Ich bin hart, ich bin unfair, ich urteile vorschnell, aber verdammt, mir geht es schlecht dabei, er sucht schon munter die nächste Doofe - also ist wohl irgendetwas schief gelaufen.“

„Falsch gepackt.“

„Wie bitte?“ Nun war die Verblüffung auf meiner Seite. „Wieso denn gepackt?“

Er schmunzelte. „Den Erwartungskoffer, Elfchen.“

„Ich hatte keine Erwartungen. Ich wollte nur wissen, wie er ist.“

„Blödsinn.“ knurrte es neben mir. „Wie viele solche Gelegenheiten hättest Du gehabt in den letzten Jahren, hast Du je auch nur eine genutzt davon?“

„Ach was weiß ich.“ entgegnete ich entnervt.

„Hey.“ murmelte Hobbit sanft und zog meinen Kopf wieder an seine Brust. „Garstigelfchen. Knurr mich nicht an. Du bist enttäuscht,  aber es gibt keinen Grund, sich so schlecht zu fühlen. Du hast getan, was Du tun wolltest. Du wärst nicht Du, wenn nicht ein Stückchen Herz mit drauf gehen würde.“ Nun war es an ihm zu seufzen. „Vergiss es einfach. Ein schwieriger Typ, schwierige Umstände, das letzte, was Du brauchst momentan.“

„Tut trotzdem weh.“ brummte ich in sein Hemd.

„Und wenn schon.“ brummte es zurück.

Geborgen im Hobbitarm ließ ich es noch einmal Revue passieren. Er hatte recht, ich war ungerecht.

„Weißt Du was?“

„Was?“

„Ich konnte ihn eh nicht leiden.“ sagte ich und schloss schnell die Augen, damit die darin erkennbare Lüge mich nicht in die Hölle brachte.

In questo caso però il neozelandese si occuperà soltanto della trasposizione del romanzo in dialoghi e battute. La regia delle due pellicole sarà affidata al messicano Guillermo del Toro, che ha gia dato prova di gestire egregiamente le ambientazioni fantastiche (Hellboy e Il labirinto del fauno).

Il primo episodio, che era stata annunciata poco dopo la conclusione della precedente «trilogia», sarà incentrata sul giovane Bilbo Baggins.

Ciao caro sottoscrittore del mio feed, ciao utente che capiti qui per caso, mi chiamo Paz, almeno in rete, ma ho dovuto metterci davanti un 83, perché se no chi detiene i diritti di Andrea Pazienza (che è un po' uno dei miei miti) poi veniva a farmi il culo.

Scrivo questo post, perché ad un certo punto della propria vita, un mezz'uomo deve fare i conti con se stesso. Si, avete letto bene, mezz'uomo, come hobbit, come frodo. Le uniche differenze sono che non ho i piedi ricoperti di peli a mo di stuoino in lana merinos, e che la mia faccia non è da culo come quelle della famiglia baggins. Per il resto dal basso del mio neanche metro e settanta (meno meno) la definizione di mezz'uomo ci sta tutta, ho pure il mantello dell'invisibilità, ma il vouyerismo è passato di moda dieci anni fa, quindi se volete ve lo vendo con modalità contatto diretto su Ebay. Caro sottoscrittore del mio feed, che ti beccherai nelle prossime ore questa minchiata, che tu lo voglia o no, ho deciso di fare outing, ancora. Perché un mezz'uomo ad un certo punto deve prendere atto di certe cose, dei suoi limiti e soprattutto del mandingo che continua a buttargli monetine in terra davanti alla sua faccia. Stronzo!

A quasi 25 anni (in realtà ne avrei 19, ma se lo dico poi qui mi si accusa di barare) prendo atto della morte del comunismo, della sinistra e anche di Don Lurio. Fino ad oggi continuavo a vederlo danzare su e giù per i palinsesti televisivi. Ma era la mia mente che non accettava il decesso. Il tip e tap non è più stato lo stesso dopo, ed io ho appeso le scarpette al chiodo, quello del negozio di danza da dove le avevo appena prese, e in cui mi giunse la notizia del decesso del Don. Grazie a dio non le avevo ancora pagate e non rimasi inculato come Billy Elliot.

A quasi 25 anni (in realtà ne ho 18, ma se lo dico poi qui mi si accusa di barare) prendo atto che è inutile fare il comico e il fine umorista. Non sono abbastanza potente, mediaticamente, per divulgare la mia arte attraverso tv e giornali. C'è chi pote e chi non pote, e chi non pote se lo scuote. Lui può, io no!

A quasi 25 anni (in realtà ne ho 17, ma se lo dico poi qui mi si accusa di barare) prendo atto del fatto che è inutile fingere di non vederlo. Quel ciuffo bianco di capelli, bastardo e insidioso come un vipera nascosta nella tazza del cesso, è lì, e non scomparirà perché io non ho studiato ad azclabar, trazcabalr, zappaevaacagar o come cazzo si chiama quella scuola di magia privata dove se paghi ti fanno passare comunque. No, io ho fatto la scuola pubblica, e mi rendo conto adesso di quanto la buona istruzione sia fondamentale se non vuoi finire brizzolato come Ravanelli. Basta averceli i soldi e andare a studiare a praticdimar..o tòtalquiranal, azbalacazar..o come cazzo si chiama quella scuola li, che se paghi passi comunque.

A quasi 25 anni (in realtà ne ho 16, ma se lo dico poi qui mi si accusa di barare) prendo atto del fatto che non ho più lo stomaco di una volta. Ho mangiato una mozzarella e due svizzere (hamburger maliziosi) e subito dopo ho visto il kamasutra illustrato con Giuliani Ferrara e sbirulino. Persino il vomito a deciso di restarsene intanato al buio del mio intestino.

A quasi 25 anni (in realtà ne ho 15, ma se lo dico poi qui mi si accusa di barare) prendo atto del fatto che non ho per un cazzo il dono della sintesi. Anzi, ci provo gusto ad essere prolisso. È uno dei miei lati femminei che più adoro in me. Se voglio scassarti il cazzo lo faccio, e la tengo pure lunga!

A quasi 25 anni (in realtà ne ho 14, ma se lo dico poi qui mi si accusa di barare) prendo atto del fatto che l'unico sport in cui sono competitivo è iss pro evolution (scegliete voi l'edizione) e pure lì faccio cacca. Prima ho provato a tirare un calcio ad un supertele, e l'umiliazione è stata così forte che ho sentito la necessità di scrivere questo post. Giocavo io contro nessuno. Ma ho preso goal da un colpo di brezza che soffiava in quel momento. Allora ho provato a fargli una gamba tesa. Fallo da rosso. Sono uscito dal campo. Non c'era l'arbitro. Ma un signore di 90 anni che passava davanti al cancello in bici mi ha chiesto se mi serviva un'ambulanza. Era evidente il quadruplo aneurisma con infarto condito da complicazioni polmonari, conseguenti la mia azione fallosa. La brezza mi ha sputato e poi se n'è andata. Solo dopo ho scoperto che era merda di piccione. Ma in campagna? Alle 8 di sera? Boh!

A quasi 25 anni (in realtà ne ho 13 e mi fermo qui, e cazzi vostri se pensate che io bari, perché è a 13 anni che apprendi in pieno i piaceri e i segreti della masturbazione, prima di allora non c'è nulla) prendo atto del fatto che se qualcuno commenterà questo post sarà una delle cose per cui, se dovesse capitarmi di morire, potrò dire: ce l'ho fatta. Io ce l'ho fatta!

Writing has begun in earnest according to del Toro and The One Ring and shooting is expected to start at the earliest in Fall 2009 in New Zealand.

Meanwhile Bloomberg reports that is raising as much as $600 million to produce some of its biggest upcoming films with a big portion of that bank to be used on "The Hobbit".

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have officially signed on to collaborate on "The Hobbit" and its sequel with director Guillermo del Toro.

The announcement, from exec producers Jackson and Walsh and New Line president Toby Emmerich, came four months after del Toro confirmed he had signed on to direct both pics.

Jackson, Walsh and Boyens teamed on penning the three screenplay adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkein’s "The Lord of the Rings." The third pic, "The Return of the King," won an Oscar for adapted screenplay.

The announcement said the production’s tentatively set to begin in late 2009, with the releases set for 2011 and 2012.

Del Toro is directing the two films back to back, with the first pic centered on a young Bilbo Baggins swept off by the wizard Gandalf to recover a lost treasure. The sequel deals with the 60-year period between "The Hobbit" and "The Fellowship of the Ring," the first of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Warner Bros. susbisdiary New Line is overseeing development and will manage production. Both pics are being co-produced and co-financed by New Line and MGM, with Warner distributing domestically and MGM handling international.

Peter Jackson is to co-write the screenplay for The Hobbit, according to US trade paper Hollywood Reporter.

Jackson, who presided over the Oscar-winning Lord Of The Rings trilogy, is executive producer on the new Tolkien adaptation, which is due out in 2011.

He had already handed over the director's reigns to Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro.

But following an eight-month search for a suitable scribe, the pair decided to adapt the epic novel themselves.

Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who worked with Jackson on Lord of The Rings, have also joined the writing team.

Written by Tolkien years before the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit follows the life of a young Bilbo Baggins on his journey to kill a dragon accompanied by the wizard Gandalf.

The big-screen version will be split into two parts.

As with Lord Of The Rings, they will be shot simultaneously and released over consecutive years.

So let's rewind a bit to cover the highlights.

August 1 I went to Phoenix for work and had the privilege of meeting up with some old friends, the fabulous Bob and Michele Olsen from Mesa. What a treat. It was only spending time with them for lunch that made up for the horrendous 110 degree temperatures in Phoenix.

A week later and I met Kellie Forbes who owns a fabulous bead store in Sandy. Kayla and I went down there and had the greatest, amateur jewelry-making times of our lives. I made this necklace. I did! All by myself, threading all of these strands of beads. Who knew.

Kayla made a very pretty, delicate blue necklace and bracelet. I will blog about Kellie's store more when I get the pictures uploaded. Needless to say, we had tons of fun there.

On Aug 12th, I took a group of 28 up to first meadow on Tympooneke at 11:00 pm at night to look at the Perseids meteor shower. The sky was clear all day until about 9 o'clock at night and then the winds blew in some serious clouds which made the shower watching a little prohibitive. Nevertheless, we had lots of glowsticks and snacks and such, so we laid out under the sky until about 1:30 AM before heading home. I saw three meteors during that time. I love doing this every year. Even if you do not see showers its heckuva lot of fun just to be out there in the dark and cold with a bunch of people.

On August 15, Jeff and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary! 21 years imagine that. I am still alive and so is Jeff. Our marriage is a success! ;) We celebrated by making fun of each other and then heading up to Midway with Kellie and Thayne for a weekend time of relaxation. We got back this afternoon. Last night I was looking at the gold course that our condo overlooks when a white-tailed fox slowly loped onto the golf trail and slowly made its way into the center area with some small brush. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera at the time so I missed it. But so cool! A fox in the wild.

Midway has a house we call the Hobbit house. It is so cute, with its thatched roof and delicate gardens. I finally got a picture of it today.

How cute is that?

We went to Memorial HIll after that. We've always been curious about this hill. It overlooks all of the hot spring holes (I prefer to call them spring geodes) that dot the area, especially around Zermatt. Memorial hill has the posted names of all of those people who died while in the service, it had all of the different wars and conflicts. The memorial is quite stunning. And the views from the top of the hill were super.

Tomorrow school starts. Life always gets busier when that happens. Did I mention my life was already busy?

McCain states in the video that he believes in evolution, but then adds that the "hand of god" can be seen in the Grand Canyon at sunset. In essence he gives a non-answer; he sits his ass on the fence. It's almost as if he had rehearsed his response, but for a moment forgot the second half of the answer, the part that appeases the creationists. (Line, line. Where's the director? Where's my bottled water? The teleprompter isn't working and neither is my ear-piece. Someone get me a moist towelette. I'm John McCain, a freaking war hero.)

I'm convinced that McCain actually does "believe" in evolution. But I also think he desperately wants to be president, and will say anything, or do almost anything, to attain and keep that position. If he has to be indirectly responsible for damaging science education, so be it. If he does win the election, he'll most likely fuel a new creationist fire, for the very reason that he needs the approval of the Christian-right. He'll be their enabler. Earlier this year, he courted the Intelligent Design vote. And Intelligent Design is just creationism with an easier-to-swallow coating. (But it's still a hard pill to swallow.)

Tolkien nasceu na África do Sul e aos três anos de idade, com sua mãe e irmão, passou a viver na Inglaterra, terra natal de seus pais. Desde pequeno fascinado pela lingüística, cursou a faculdade de Letras em Exeter. Lutou na Primeira Guerra Mundial, onde começou a escrever os primeiros rascunhos do que se tornaria o seu "mundo secundário" complexo e cheio de vida, denominado Arda, palco das mundialmente famosas obras O Hobbit, O Senhor dos Anéis e O Silmarillion, esta última, sua maior paixão, que, postumamente publicada, é considerada sua principal obra, embora não a mais famosa.

Tornou-se filólogo e professor universitário, tendo sido professor de anglo-saxão (e considerado um dos maiores especialistas do assunto) na Universidade de Oxford de 1925 a 1945, e de inglês e Literatura inglesa na mesma universidade de 1945 a 1959. Mesmo precedido de outros escritores de fantasia, tais como William Morris, Robert E. Howard e E. R. Eddison, devido à grande popularidade de seu trabalho, Tolkien ficou conhecido como o "pai da moderna literatura fantástica". Sua obra influenciou toda uma geração.

Católico fervoroso, foi grande amigo de C.S. Lewis, autor de As Crônicas de Nárnia, ambos membros do grupo de literatura The Inklings.

A vida na sua obra

A infância de Tolkien teve duas realidades distintas: a vida rural em Sarehole, ao sul de Birmingham, lugar que inspirou o famoso Condado, e o período urbano na escura Birmingham, onde iniciou seus estudos.

Ainda criança, mudou-se para King's Heat, numa casa próxima a uma linha de trem. Foi aí que ele começou a desenvolver uma imaginação lingüística, motivada pelos estranhos nomes das paradas do percurso, tais como Nantyglo, Perhiwceiber e Seghenydd. Sua infância foi muito marcada pelos contos de fadas, que estimularam sua imaginação para o Faërie, Belo Reino, como ele se referia ao mundo dos seres fantásticos.

Em 1900, sua mãe abraçou a religião católica, fato que o influenciou profundamente, mesmo sem a menção direta de Deus na sua obra (Tolkien representa Deus por Eru, o qual cria todo universo e os seres que lá habitam). Tolkien disse que os mitos não-cristãos guardavam em si elementos do Grande Mito, o Evangelho, que adentraram o Mundo Primário, isto é, o mundo real, fato este que não vai contra a Igreja Católica.

Sua mãe Mabel apresentou a ele e a seu irmão os contos de fadas em línguas como o latim e o grego. Depois da morte de Mabel, em 1904, por diabete, Tolkien e seu irmão foram deixados aos cuidados do padre Francis Morgan, sacerdote de Birmingham. A partir de então, o rapaz se dedicou aos estudos demonstrando grande talento lingüístico. Estudou grego, latim, línguas antigas e modernas, como o finlandês (que serviu de base para criação do idioma élfico) Quenya e o galês (base para o outro idioma élfico, o Sindarin). Em 1905 os órfãos mudaram-se para a casa de uma tia em Birmingham. Em 1908, deu início à sua carreira acadêmica, ingressando no Colégio de Exeter, da Universidade de Oxford.

Em 1914, ano em que começa a Primeira Guerra Mundial, Tolkien ficou noivo de Edith Bratt. No ano seguinte, recebeu com honras o diploma de licenciatura em Literatura de Língua Inglesa. A graduação e os méritos não o libertam da convocação e em 1916, depois de se casar com Edith Bratt, foi chamado à guerra. Tolkien sobreviveu à Batalha do Somme (província de Soma), uma mal-sucedida incursão na França/Bélgica onde morreram mais de 500 mil combatentes. Em 1917 nasceu o seu primeiro filho, John Francis Reuel Tolkien (mais tarde padre John Tolkien) e no ano seguinte, depois de contrair febre da trincheira (tifo), J.R.R.Tolkien foi enviado de volta à Inglaterra. Foi neste período que Tolkien iniciou o Livro dos Contos Perdidos (The Book of Lost Tales), que mais tarde se converteria em O Silmarillion, em 1919 quando ele retornou a Oxford.

Depois do fim da guerra, Tolkien dedicou-se ao trabalho acadêmico como professor, tornando-se um dos maiores filólogos do mundo. Nesta mesma época ingressou na equipe formada para preparar o New English Dictionary, o equivalente inglês do dicionário brasileiro Aurélio. O projeto já havia chegado à letra W, e seu supervisor, impressionado com o trabalho de Tolkien, afirmou que:

"Seu trabalho [de Tolkien] dá provas de um domínio excepcional de anglo-saxão e dos fatos e princípios da gramática comparada das línguas germânicas. Na verdade, não hesito em dizer que nunca conheci um homem da sua idade que se igualasse a ele nesses aspectos”.

Mas foi só em 1925, depois do nascimento de seus filhos Michael Hilary Reuel Tolkien (1920) e Christopher John Reuel Tolkien (1924) que Tolkien publicou seu primeiro livro, ao lado de E. V. Gordon: Sir Gawain & the Green Knight, baseado em lendas do folclore inglês. A sua filha mais nova, Priscilla Anne Reuel Tolkien, nasceria dali a cinco anos.

"Num buraco no chão vivia um hobbit"

A idéia de seu primeiro grande sucesso, O Hobbit, surgiu em 1928, enquanto Tolkien examinava documentos de alunos que queriam ingressar na Universidade e Tolkien contou que:

“Um dos alunos deixou uma das páginas em branco – possivelmente a melhor coisa que poderia ocorrer a um examinador – e eu escrevi nela: Em um buraco no chão vivia um hobbit, não sabia e não sei porquê.”

Foi a partir desta frase que ele começou a escrever O Hobbit, somente dois anos depois, mas o abandonou no meio.

Tolkien emprestou o manuscrito incompleto para a Reverenda Madre de Cherwell Edge na época, quando esta estava doente, e ele foi visto por Susan Dagnall, uma bacharel de Oxford , que trabalhava para Allen & Unwin (comprada em 1990 pela Editora Harper Collins) e analisado depois por Rayner Unwin (Filho de Stanley Unwin, fundador da Allen & Unwin, na época com 10 anos de idade) que ficou maravilhado pela história. Dagnall ficou tão encantada com o material que encorajou Tolkien para que ele terminasse o livro, e em 1937 é publicada a primeira edição de O Hobbit.

A saga do hobbit Bilbo – um ser baixo, pacato, de pés peludos e grandes, que se aventura na Terra Média ao lado do mago Gandalf e mais treze anões – teve tanto sucesso que Tolkien foi sondado para novas aventuras. Tolkien oferece O Silmarillion, que ele considerava sua principal obra, mesmo que, hoje, não a mais conhecida. Stanley Unwin preferiu não arriscar e não publicou a obra. Mesmo depois da recusa, Tolkien concordou em continuar a saga dos hobbits e começa a dar forma a uma nova obra, que lhe consumiu doze anos de trabalho desde os primeiros rascunhos até a sua conclusão, mas que o tornaria um dos mais conceituados escritores de todos os tempos: O Senhor dos Anéis.

O elo para a nova aventura surge no Anel que Bilbo rouba de Gollum em O Hobbit. Os primeiros rascunhos da obra datam de 1937, mas devido ao seu perfeccionismo, que o impelia a ter de fazer vários rascunhos para cada uma de suas obras, foi somente em 1949 que O Senhor dos Anéis foi para as mãos de sua editora. Durante este longo tempo, Tolkien também escreveu Leaf by Niggle em que o autor se manifesta de forma autobiográfica, projetando-se em Niggle, com suas dúvidas sobre o trabalho que estava escrevendo, "O Senhor dos Anéis", e sua relevância. Em princípio o texto foi recusado, pois a idéia de Tolkien era lançar dois volumes, sendo eles "O Silmarillion" e "O Senhor dos Anéis", já que ele os considerava interdependentes e indivisíveis. Entretanto o editor da Collins, uma outra editora, havia gostado da idéia e começou a encorajar Tolkien a publicar os livros pela editora Collins. Depois de grande atraso na publicação, Tolkien perde a paciência e desiste do acordo. Posteriormente, após algumas conversas com Rayner Unwin (já adulto e trabalhando na empresa do pai, Rayner foi um dos que recebiam os rascunhos de "O Senhor dos Anéis" de Tolkien ao longo de sua composição), a decisão da Allen & Unwin foi reconsiderada e, em 1954, foram publicados os dois primeiros volumes (A Sociedade do Anel e As Duas Torres). Em 1955 foi publicado o terceiro e último volume (O Retorno do Rei). A idéia original era lançar a obra toda num único volume, mas para baratear os custos de impressão, foi dividida em três volumes.

Esse livro consolidava então o que Tolkien chamava de Mundo Secundário, com novas normas, novos povos, uma realidade à parte: Arda, o cenário de uma das maiores obras literárias de todos os tempos. "Arda" é a Terra, povoada por seres fantásticos, como os Valar, os Maiar, e os mais conhecidos, hobbits, elfos, anões, trolls, orcs e cercada de mistérios e magia:

“[Criei] um Mundo Secundário no qual sua mente pode entrar. Dentro dele, tudo o que ele relatar é "verdade": está de acordo com as leis daquele mundo. Portanto, acreditamos enquanto estamos, por assim dizer, do lado de dentro.”

Apesar dos ataques da crítica, o livro teve grande sucesso dos dois lados do Atlântico, mas seus livros só alcançaram a classe de cult nos anos 60, devido ao fato de sua obra ter se tornado mania entre os universitários dos Estados Unidos com a chegada de uma edição pirata norte-americana neste país.

O nome de Tolkien ganhou notoriedade mundial, fato este que provocava mais transtornos que prazer ao autor, pois visitantes excêntricos afluíam ao seu encontro: fãs norte-americanos telefonavam-lhe durante a madrugada sem se lembrar do fuso horário por exemplo. Tais fatos tiveram grande peso em sua decisão de se mudar para Bournemouth.

Exímio lingüista

Tolkien era um homem apaixonado por idiomas. Quando criança se encantava com nomes galeses que via nos camiões de carvão. Com suas primas aprendeu rapidamente uma língua artificial e bem simples criadas pelas garotas, chamada Animálico, com base nos nomes de animais. Juntos criaram outra língua, uma mistura de vários outros idiomas. Chamava-se Nevbosh, traduzido como Novo Disparate. Mais tarde criou o Naffarin, mais complexa e baseada na língua de seu tutor padre Francis Morgan: o espanhol.

Tolkien, em Dezembro de 1910, tornou-se aluno do curso de literatura clássica na Universidade de Oxford, onde obteve uma bolsa de estudos do Exeter College, mas desinteressou-se por este curso e começou a gastar mais tempo no estudos de filologia, sendo orientado por Joseph Wright, um dos grandes pesquisadores britânicos desta ciência e grande conhecedor do tronco linguístico indo-europeu. Pediu transferência para a Honour School of English Language and Literature, onde teve um notável melhora devido ao seu interesse pela filologia germânica.

Desde criança já tinha em sua volta línguas clássicas como grego e o latim, e mais tarde com o espanhol. Sempre achou o italiano muito elegante e, é claro, o inglês e o anglo-saxão o fascinavam. O francês não o cativava tanto, apesar de ser (como ainda é) aclamada como uma belíssima língua. Quando se deparou com a língua finlandesa ele se encantou, e usou sua gramática, junto com a galesa, como base para as línguas que mais tarde apareceriam em seus livros. Línguas de gramática complexa e vasto vocabulário. Línguas que seriam estudadas a fundo por muitos de seus fãs: o Quenya, cujo exemplo máximo é expressado pelo poema Namárië, e o Sindarin, este último baseado no galês, as Línguas Élficas, todas movidas pelo som bonito (eufonia) e pela estética, como o "Repicar dos sinos" dizia ele. Foi baseado nestas línguas que Tolkien começou a desenvolver seu mundo. Para ele, primeiro vinha a palavra, depois a história. A composição para ele não era um passatempo (como foi 'acusado' na época), mas um trabalho filológico. Ele criou um mundo onde suas línguas pudessem ser faladas, e lendas para rodeá-las.

Tolkien, consciente da língua como um organismo mutável, totalmente relacionado com as histórias de um povo, afirmou certa vez que:

“O Volapuque, Esperanto, o Ido, o Novial, são línguas mortas, mais mortas do que antigas línguas sem uso, porque seus inventores jamais criaram lendas para acompanhá-las.”

Mais tarde afirmou num artigo sobre filologia:

“Meu conselho a todos que dispõem de tempo ou inclinação a se ocuparem com o movimento por uma língua internacional, seria: "Apoiem lealmente o Esperanto".

Criou várias outras línguas (como o Khûzdul e o Valarin), mas nenhuma tão elaborada quanto as duas élficas. Também desenvolveu alguns sistemas de escrita, as Angerthas (ou runas) e as Tengwar. Acreditava que uma língua bonita devia ter também um alfabeto elegante.

Além do inglês, Tolkien conhecia cerca de dezesseis outros idiomas (à excepção dos criados por ele mesmo) que eram os seguintes: grego antigo, latim, gótico, islandês antigo, sueco, norueguês, dinamarquês, anglo-saxão, médio inglês, alemão, neerlandês, francês, espanhol, italiano, galês e finlandês.

Quando O Hobbit foi traduzido para o islandês, Tolkien ficou encantado, porque, além de esta ser uma de suas línguas favoritas, ele achava que o livro combinaria muito com ela. Muitos nomes, como Gandalf, foram retirados do antigo islandês.

"Aqui, no fim de todas as coisas..."

Além de "O Hobbit" e "O Senhor dos Anéis", foram publicados Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (1925), Mestre Gil de Ham (1949), As Aventuras de Tom Bombadil (1963), Smith of Wootton Major (1967) e Sobre Histórias de Fadas (1965) entre outros (vide Obra de Tolkien). O escritor então se aposenta e junto de sua mulher se muda para Bournemouth. Com a morte de sua esposa em 19 de Novembro de 1971, após 55 anos de casamento, Tolkien refugiou-se na solidão em um apartamento na Universidade de Oxford. Numa carta ao seu filho Christopher, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien escreveu, sobre sua mulher Edith Bratt:

“[...]o cabelo dela era preto e sedoso, a pele clara, os olhos mais brilhantes do que os que vocês viram, e sabia cantar... e dançar. Mas a história estragou-se, e eu fiquei para trás, e não posso suplicar perante o inexorável Mandos.[...].”

No texto, Tolkien decide que no epitáfio de Edith estaria escrito Lúthien. Lúthien é uma personagem de "O Silmarillion" inspirada na esposa de Tolkien, como afirma o trecho da mesma carta:

“É breve e simples [o epitáfio], a não ser por Lúthien, que tem para mim mais significado do que uma imensidão de palavras, pois ela era (e sabia que era) a minha Lúthien [...] Nunca chamei Edith de Lúthien, mas foi ela a fonte da história que, a seu tempo, se tornou parte de O Silmarillion.”

Lúthien era elfa, imortal, mas se apaixona por um mortal, Beren. Ela então desiste de sua imortalidade. Ambos enfrentam muito para ficar juntos e, quando ele morre, Lúthien vai até os Palácios de Mandos, o guardião das Casas dos Mortos. Beren a aguardava nos Palácios, e ela canta diante de Mandos que, então, se comove, a única vez em toda sua existência, e permite que ambos voltem, como mortais.

E assim foi.

No túmulo, abaixo do nome Edith Tolkien está escrito Lúthien, que, nas histórias, é a mais bela das elfas, a mais bela dos Filhos de Ilúvatar. A história dos dois está contada na Balada de Leithian.

Em 1972, J. R. R. Tolkien recebeu o Doutorado Honorário em Letras da Universidade de Oxford, e conseguiu seu último e mais importante título: a Ordem do Império Britânico pela Rainha Elizabeth, uma das maiores honras britânicas. Era agora Sir John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.

No dia 28 de Agosto de 1973 Tolkien sentiu-se mal durante uma festa, e na manhã do outro dia foi internado, com úlcera e hemorragia. No sábado descobriu-se uma infecção no peito.

Aos 81 anos de idade, então, nas primeiras horas do domingo de 2 de Setembro de 1973, J. R. R. Tolkien morre na Inglaterra. Enterrado junto com a esposa, no Cemitério de Wolvercote, no túmulo feito de granito da Cornualha, abaixo do seu nome há a inscrição Beren.

As Duas Árvores.

Após sua morte, o seu filho Christopher editou e publicou "O Silmarillion" (em 1977), além de nos anos 80 e 90 lançar a série The History Of Middle-Earth (A História da Terra-Média), uma gigantesca coletânea dividida em doze volumes, e Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth (Contos Inacabados)

Em 1992, ano em que Tolkien completaria 100 anos, duas árvores foram plantadas em seu tributo em Oxford pela Tolkien Society e pela Mythopoeic Society, grupos de leitores e estudiosos de sua obra. Essas duas árvores fazem alusão às Duas Árvores de Valinor, que davam luz a Valinor nos Dias Antigos.
