Admittedly, I’ve never been to Egypt or India, but if there’s ever a ‘world’

Admittedly, I've never been to Egypt or India, but if there's ever a 'world's worst tap water' contest, I'd like to nominate Santorini, Greece. It is AWFUL. Actually, that's not a strong enough word: HEINOUS. HARROWING. HORRIFIC. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD.

I thought maybe if I boiled it...??? I succeeded in ruining a perfectly good tea bag. Earl Gray, no less.

I don't really know what is occurring, but I'd say the closest description is the 'water cure' at the Turkish baths in Budapest. I took a single mouthful of the salty sulfur water at the baths (out of the spigot intended for drinking), and it was warm and creepy, but bearable. The Santorini tap water is in the same genre, but not as curative. Just plain old gross.

As a coincidence (or is it???), I caught a small bit of 'Erin Brokovich' on the TV while using the wifi in the reception area earlier today. Just enough to remind me that the lawsuit was about poisonous water caused by PG&E. Just enough to feel a little tiny bit uncomfortable about all that I have consumed while on this trip.

In the same vein, I had my first glass of Greek wine today. A white wine apparently made in the traditional style. I had a sip, and I didn't like it. The flavor was strange. Like herbs maybe. I couldn't quit put my finger on it, but it was familiar.

I took another sip.

Oregano?

No.

Basil?

No.

Thyme?
No.

Mold?

Without a doubt.

Probably it came from a bottle that was corked, but I'm not sure. I know there's a whole world of wine flavors. Is mildew a legitimate flavor profile?

Meanwhile, the hotel I'm staying at sells a glass of local white wine out of a box (less chance of corkage!) for 3 euro. However, if moldy is just the way it tastes, I really don't want to waste the money. Thus, for now, I'll just stick with my bottled water. On the other hand, tomorrow is my birthday (how weird is that???), so maybe I'll live large and order up a glass of the box wine then? And I'm definitely getting some calamari.

Meanwhile, I had a strange night. After a solid week or more in hostels (and listening to people snore in all forms and fashion), I was so looking forward to peace and quiet. However, the universe had other plans. First, there was the wind. It got up to 45mph, and the sound of that is something else. At the very least, it's not something I'm accustomed to, and some primitive instinct inside me finds it a little bit alarming. Especially when I'm on an island.

Next, there was my room. Not to pick on it, but the construction quality is little bit shoddy. The window has two panels – one glass and another wood – and they fit together and are held in place by a metal hinge that reminds me of a bobby pin. One strong breeze and they both come flying open.

Furthermore, the door to the room is jimmied into place, and a solid inch of daylight peers through when it's shut. However, they have thoughtfully provided a sheet on a curtain rod, which I suppose is to try to block out the light or the breeze or ??? With respect to the door, the only thing that keeps it from flying open is a deadbolt which fits loosely in its slot. It's a very casual arrangement from a security perspective, and if I knew I wouldn't have to pay for the damage, I'd kind of be curious to see if I could body slam the door open using just my weight. I suspect I could.

Thus, due to the questionable craftsmanship and the intense winds, the door and windows spent the night slamming open and closed and creaking and straining and rattling against the deadbolt. It was incredibly noisy, and I probably woke up six or seven times. Then I would just lay in the darkness and listen to the wind and marvel at the fact that I'm lying in a bed in Santorni, Greece and my stomach is turning a little too much and does that water just taste bad or does the bad taste serve as a warning, like the stink applied to natural gas?

(Now you know why that little snippet of Erin Brokovich was particularly alarming...)

If the wind and the slamming and the creaking weren't enough, there was the crying. At first, while still asleep, I thought it was a child. Then I realized it was a dog. In my sleepy confusion, I thought maybe it was in the courtyard of the hotel. I got up to look for it and maybe give it something to eat (I don't have much in the room, but I do have some milk, some eggs, and an unlimited supply of hideous water). There was no one there but the wind.

I went back to bed, fell asleep, and heard it again. At this point, I realized it was coming from above my head, on the other side of the hotel. It cried and cried and cried, and I could occasionally hear it shake and the sound of a chain around its neck. I figured it must be afraid of all the wind or cold (or both), and it made me incredibly sad.

Today, I went looking and discovered a dog tied up behind a house near the hotel. I talked to the people here and they agreed that it was probably the same one I heard crying, that it's always tied up, and that it “isn't very nice.” I hate these kinds of situations. As much as I'm reminded of the magic in the world, it's also hard to deny that people can be thoughtless idiots, if not worse.

If I were at home, I would go and talk to the owners and maybe even see if they would give me the dog or let me buy it from them. Anything to give it a better life. Here, and in these circumstances (with three weeks of backpacking left to do), I feel so helpless. I had to give myself firm talk about the insanity of trying to rescue a Greek dog. Or take it with me. Although if I can figure out where, I may go and buy it some meat or at least a bone. A birthday present to us both.

Speaking of birthdays, I was looking for a quote for tomorrow's blog, and I ran across one so simple and yet profound, that it kind of made me tear up. As an added point of significance, it was said by Jonathan Swift, the writer that 'invented' my name (Vanessa) as a nickname for a student of his.

Moreover, it is a sentiment that has come to exemplify how I intend to live my life: by following my instincts, my heart, my emotions, and my gut. By noticing coincidences and doing what feels right. By being flexible and open and real. And by not being afraid and trusting the universe to throw out a safety net when I need it. And those ideals - as simple, as elusive, as liberating and as complicated as they are - can be summarized a little bit like this:

May you live all the days of your life.

Been a while since the last post; in denial that we're not on the road anymore. Writing in this blog reminds us of steamy internet cafes, odorific street markets and persistent back pain from hauling packs that weigh at least two thirds of Patti's body weight. We'll take it, though. Day to day has been tough—wah wah wah —but we are pushing through.

So now we live in the past with our photo collection; dreaming of a time—hopefully sooner than later—when we can spend an afternoon checking off items to pack and hearing the zipper sound one last time before departure. Mosquito coils and netting near the top, always.

Safety, love and success to Mrs. Patti Lew Wilkinson as she embarks on
a campaign to Colorado to help secure a big win for the blue team in
this year's election.

Steelers have the week off.

Enjoy these photos and your Sunday, even if the Steelers are not playing. I know it's going to be hard.

131. Kyrgyz Republic

132. Lesotho

133. Libya

134. Algeria

Yes. That's right.

The UK lies behind Peru and El Salvador.

Now given this report was a survey of the world's economists whose advice our banks were no doubt taking; should we believe it?

Are the UK's banks really behind Peru, El Salvador and Senegal?

Or is it an accurate representation that is slightly out of date, compiled as it was slightly before the bail-outs?

That must depend on whether you believe the bail-outs will work.

If reports are to be believed the Royal Bank of Scotland is next in line to be nationalised tomorrow. If that happens then there will be further pressure on the remaining UK bank's to be nationalised too. The banking sector could be picked off one by one by the market and the taxpayer forced to pick up the tab.

On that Iain Dale post there have already been comments about the English taxpayer bailing out the Scottish bank.

It must be a pity, to all those who carp, that Scotland is not already independent.

An independent Scotland with a similar oil fund like our neighbour Norway could be similarly insulated from these turbulent times.

It would also have the economic levers to maintain its economy best, not just for the South-East of England as remains the case today. Remember Eddie George, the former Governor of the Bank of England: Unemployment in the north is a price worth paying for affluence in the South!

Although the credit crunch is global, take a look back at those rankings.

Sweden, Luxembourg, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands. All small countries lying in the top 10.

Even Ireland, who have recently guaranteed all deposits in their banks, are sitting 9th.

The argument that Scotland is too small to be financially unstable is farcical! I don't hear anyone saying that Denmark is too small and should be run from Berlin. (Not since the days of Adolf Hitler and the Second World War anyway!)

As countries large and small struggle with the credit credit crunch from the U.S. and Russia down to Iceland with its 300 000 population, this population argument of independence must be seen to be invalid. Iceland, with a population slightly smaller than North Lanarkshire, isn't exactly Miramont Gardens in Pimlico!

What matters now is that we take the right decisions to get out this mess.

Those decisions may be different for each country. They may even be different for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

That's why its important key economic levers are devolved away from Westminster.

Otherwise the Eddie George syndrome will hamper 'the North' recovering for years.

During our several trips to Rodos I have collected a few pictures too. Here we have some that are partial enlargement of the original picture. It's fun to zoom in pictures and find things you did not realize when photographing.

Hotel San Antonio, Rodos - Greece

This resort has been more or less closed down at least since 2005. I'm not familiar with details but it looks pretty OK from outside. During my stay in 2005 there was an old woman living and we saw her often watering the flowers and sweeping the patio. 2006 I did not make any special observations but 2007 and 2008 looked like the house was deserted completely.

Actually, there are several premises that look similarly forgotten though it does not mean they really are abandoned. They just wait better days to come. Let's hope there is really good days ahead for all.

Street artist.

He is painting the Greek Orthodox Church of St Evangelismos at Mandraki harbor. Despite good position selected in shade of threes it may take some days to accomplish concluding the pace.

Painting is something I'd love to do. Unfortunately I have not been able to release my secret abilities in field of painting arts. I still have faith in that some fine day the will be an awakening for me. A half a dozen of different paintings with sunflowers and blue skies would do me fine.

Mobiles and motorbikes at the Mandraki harbor.

We are all so in mobiles today. In Greece it's even more common to use a mobile all the time. Modern greek without a mobile would be similar to ancient statue without tread marks. Must have a mobile, the newer the better. Same with motorbikes, scooters and cars.

I'm glad this picture proves otherwise at least once. There is an old BMW that strongly looks like something from 1950's. No everything needs to be up to the latest model. Most things however seem to lose their value with more short life span than let's say about 25 years ago. This change I believe has been even more rapid in Greece. It's less than a decade as I recall seeing a lot of reasonably old vehicles in daily operation. Today this seldom happens.

Triton II arriving back home.

Loaded of tired but supposedly happy SCUBA divers the boat returns from day long trip. This happens every day with 45 min boat trip from Mandraki Harbour to the dive site in Kalithea bay. Spectators can relax on the boat in shaded or unshaded areas. They can naturally snorkel, swim, sunbathe or explore the bay.

Kalithea bay is something I have not been able to discover yet. It's great to have something to look forward. The Kalithea spa building complex is a distinguished cultural monument build by Italians during 1920's. In his book "Reflections on a Marine Venus" Lawrence Durrell writes that Gideon was addicted to drink the sulfurous water for his health.

Rodos Public Library.

The quiet sanctuary in the heart of vigorous tourist stream of Rodos old town. This is the place Durrell visited busily while he stayed in Rodos during 1940's. It's very clean and tidy with exquisite inside garden. Seldom any crowds there.

There is a massive stockroom for newspapers but it's not allowed to enter. Maybe they are too afraid of cigarette smoking Sunday researchers might start it on fire. I suggest you drop by in case you ever spot the place. There is a bronze plate in the door stating the name on the library front door less than 50 meters from Hippocrates square in Rhodes old tow. Other information, like opening hours may vary and they are given in paper below the plate.

Cheerio

In Roman mythology Venus is the parallel to the Greek Aphrodite, although Venus is more somewhat more subdued than Aprhodite.

Venus is a goddess of seduction and, in one group of rites and myth, she is associated with Roman wine fesitvals (Vinalia) and thus regarded as a mediator between Jupiter and the Roman people.

She is also the mother of Aeneas, who according to the poet Vergil is the founder of Rome.

And she was the lover of Mars, who with the mortal Rhea Silva begat the twin brothers Romulus and Remus.

Since Rome was named after Romulus, who after disposing of Remus became the first ruler of Rome, Venus plays a kind of dual role in the founding of Rome. As such, she was given a solemnity among the Romans that Aphrodite did not enjoy among the Greeks.

Venus' first known temple was built shortly after 295 BCE. And despite New Age and Jungian attempts to treat her as some pristine archetype, and others to link her to the Indian Vedic term for desire, her historical roots remain obscure.

However, it's clear that her character did develop, as most mythic entities do, along with sociopolitical changes in Rome. The influential aristocrat Sulla called her his "Protectress" and by the time of the Roman Empire, Venus was incorporated into the official pantheon.

In astronomy Venus is the second planet from the sun. Due to its brightness, Venus looks like a star and is accordingly called the "morning star" or "evening star."

» Aliens, Aphrodite, Cupid, Earth, Ishtar, Libra, Taurus

I love musicals. I love movies, plays, books, songs, any event really... that grants me with more 'design ideas' to decorate the rooms of my castle in the clouds. You know those romance stories/fantasy films that just fill your heart with hope that 'that can be my life' too? No, I'm not talking about talking chipmunks or skillful sewing birds( Mind you, I said my castle in the cloud not my asylum).

I'm talking more along the lines of life can really be that song filled romance story set in beautiful locations unravished by pollution or deforestation (at this moment inspired by Mama Mia, the scene is beautiful Greece), where my darling doesn't just look like Pierce Brosnan and sound like Brad Pitt (my castle, my ideals so shoosh to those of you question why those two!) but he's also naturally romantic and geniunely sensitive and initiative in manner. Then we would have tasteful witty conversations under a moonlit night and stare into the shadowed ocean and wonder about the many secrets it may hold.

[caption id="attachment_17" align="aligncenter" width="420" caption="'Beautiful breathtaking Greece' (Photo credit: greektourism.gr)"][/caption]

Yes that 'room design' was inspired by Mama Mia. In fact that's what I'm going to call it. The Mama Mia Room...Honestly that movie touched me so deeply that each time Meryl Streep took a breath of fresh ocean air, I felt as though my lungs were being filled with them, but I'm straying now...so back to what I was trying to say.

The best stories aren't complicated ones, they are the ones which we can relate to. Mama Mia had the sadness of past, the strength of a woman, the bond of blood, the innocence of a child, the promise for a future and that flame of love, unrelinquished by time or event. A perfect chemistry that produces 'beautiful'

PS: I've never been to Greece so I'm planning make a trip there soon.

Even in cultures where male deities are in paramount positions, there are always lesser female deities in the background; almost like a band of celestial executive assistants. In Christianity, the various angels are frequently female, or at least depicted as strangely androgynous males.

In Norse religion, the Valkyries performed the task of deciding who should live or die on the battle field; and conveying the dead to the halls of Valhalla. Once in Valhalla, their job was to provide the fallen heroes with food and drink.. and possibly companionship??... while they awaited the time of the Ragnarok.

The Valkyries are often associated with (or conflated with) the Norns, numerous female entities who rule the fates of the various Norse races; somewhat like an advisory council to the Gods.

In Greek mythology, nymphs were any member of a large class of mythological entities in human female form; often associated with elements of the landscape or nature - rivers, springs and trees being the most common manifestations.

Meanwhile in India, female spirits of the clouds and waters are known as apsaras, and are often connected to fertility rituals. They are said to be good dancers, and similarly to Norse valkyries, one of their responsibilities is to act as the caretakers of the fallen heroes.

The concept of a trinity appears in many pre-christian releigions, so much so that it seems that christianity had to invent one of its own n order to fit in pre-existing belief patterns. The three daughters of Allah, the Celtic Trinities, the Vedic trinities all point to a common root.

To work its way into the pantheisitic cultures of the Greek and Roman worlds, and beyond that to the equally pantheistic orbits of the Celtic and Norse domains; the Christian God had to be - at the very least - a triplet.

A singular God as worshipped by the jews -would not have spread so far, would not have been understood, would not have been so accepted in different cultures as a triple or multi-faceted deity would have been.

Threesomes are important - One by himself, herself, is simply not enough to get done eveything that needs to get done.

The word hierophany comes from the Greek heiros (ἱερὀς") meaning "sacred" or "holy," and "φαίνειν" (phainein) meaning "to reveal" or "to bring to light") and often signifies a manifestation of the sacred divine.

So what we created was a hierophany ?? - the greeks knew how to do this (and they know how to do it now!) - they knew how to create an infinite light.

As part of their mystic rituals they used kykeon, barley wine brewed from ergot-infected barley...or some deriavtive therof, to lift the curtain... A millenium later Hildegard figured out how to do this too... but what did she use ?? what was her secret ? beer brewed from ergot-infected barley could have been easily available in medieval Europe, though they may not have known what they were drinking.

Πoιο είναι άραγε το μυστικό της επιτυχίας; Πώς μια μειονεκτική περιοχή κατάφερε το «θαύμα»;

[caption id="attachment_498" align="aligncenter" width="418" caption="Φιλεταρουμε το ψαρι"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_499" align="aligncenter" width="418" caption="Ετοιμαζοντας τον ζωμο για την σαλτσα"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_500" align="aligncenter" width="418" caption="Το μαξιλαρακι ετοιμο για ψησιμο"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_502" align="aligncenter" width="418" caption="Ετοιμο για το γκριλ"][/caption]

38°56.99N 020° 45.94E

Vigdis is ashore again in Preveza Marina.

The thunderstorm in Palairos was repeated the next morning. Some people there on flotilla were extremely fed up: they had had a fortnight of bad weather - low temperatures, strong winds, rain and thunderstorms. Some had been stuck in Palairos for two days as they chose not to go out. There are still lots of flotillas about and flotilla companies have boats to hire out, so will continue to the end of October providing people are willing to pay. Customers expect sunshine as in the brochures, but the weather in October is extremely uncertain. We were told that autumn was early this year.

Once the thundertorm had passed we motored through the Levkas Canal up to the anchorage off Preveza to await the predicted strong westerlies. These turned out exactly as WindFinder.com had been forecasting for over a week: 36 hours of 20 to 26 knot winds; enough to keep us awake during the night and on the boat during the day. Preveza was as noisy as before - whenever the wind dropped you could hear a disco pounding away till dawn.

Once that had passed, and with the weather now much improved, we spent a pleasant couple of days in the Gulf of Amvrakikos - which was as windy as before. We had two days of good sailing, saw a very large pod of dolphins, one turtle, and many seabirds - including pelicans.

We spent a night to Paliomilou bay: 38° 54.28N 021° 01.33E. This is an agricultural area, and we were puzzled by a large building on the shore in the style of an out-of-town shopping shed, which was brightly lit at night and was visited by many cars. We dinghied ashore the next morning to discover that it was a casino! What's it doing here? No noise though - a better class of patron who probably drive BMWs not motor bikes. We christened the place Casino Bay.

Then to Vonitsa again to do an engine service - there being a good quay, water, and chandleries in the town. Most of the other boats there were also preparing for liftout: several of them had already removed their sails. We really like Vonitsa - an attractive town, with many useful shops. Excellent breadshop, with wholemeal bread "olikos" (Sikali turns out to be rye bread.)

So ends our second year's cruising. Sailing in Greece is much better than Italy: plenty of anchorages, mostly no charge for the harbours and no fuss.

We transmitted on VHF just twice this year: once when entering Gouvia Marina and once to answer a radio check, unlike last year's almost daily burden of trying to get Italian marinas to answer.

Total distance sailed 1125nm (probably more - the log under-reads). 158 engine hours - an average of 2.5 hours per day that we were at sea - as opposed to staying in harbour or on anchorage. (That figure surprised us; we have spent very few days motoring all day so it represents the time spent motoring when leaving and arriving at harbours, anchoring, and so on.)

Next year afround the Peloponnese and into the Aegean. Not sure where yet...

What we have in America is a political chimera, a conglomeration of the worst attributes of oligarchy, plutocracy, and democracy. I can not conceive of a viable formula to directly fix it. It may very well be a lost cause. We’ll all have to do the best we can. Towards that all I can say is that collusion is not the answer. It soils one’s hands, and merely delays the natural sequence of events. Beyond which something better may come about.

“Philosopher king” is just a label for someone who is actually intellectually equipped and qualified to run a society. We train our pilots, we train our doctors, we train our engineers, we train our soldiers, we train our teachers. Yet from those to whom we delegate the highest responsibilities of all, we require no intellectual and educational qualifications whatsoever. I can imagine a society in which civic leadership is a profession, one for which the practitioners are required to be specifically and rigorously trained, after demonstrating an inclination, aptitude and talent from the earliest age. A profession that has licensing requirements, with which are associated highest standards of ethical conduct. I can see a council of such professionals, mentored, quality-controlled and appointed from within, generation after generation, performing the functions of the “philosopher kings.”

Can we get there from here? Wielders of power are never voluntary yielders of power. This sort of argument usually leads to the doorsteps of violent revolution. Somehow I can’t see that as being applicable to the society of philosopher kings. Theirs is the power of the mind, not muscle. That leaves one option. Subterfuge.

PS: I think that is Platonic position also.

Wow what an interesting point of view on the idea to train those that would lead us. It reminds me of the ancient Chinese system of training politicians in schools and having to take tests and prove they are capable statesmen. Would you mind if I blog about this and use our conversation?

Θα... :)

The weather was supposed to be beautiful today, sadly it is not, it is drizzly but on the positive it's not cold. Today we are going to walk around Thessaloniki and see their Hagia Sophia and some other notable landmarks (actually apparently there are only 7 landmarks according to the hotel tourist guide). Our first visit was to the White Tower which was actually built by the Turks! It has been used for various purposes throughout history, lookout tower and prison chief among them. The structure itself was cool but the truly interesting thing is the way they used technology to create the museum. There wouldn't have been that much to see in the tower without the slide shows and videos that they used to create the atmosphere on each floor (there were 6). However as a result the few pictures I have are of the beautiful view from the roof and the one I took from my hotel balcony.

We split into two groups for a bit after the White Tower since Di, Ryan and I were sort of done there and we decided we would meet near the Hagia Sophia to see that next. As the three of us were walking in that general direction we saw or to be more accurate smelled an amazing sweets and icecream store so we stopped in for a quick snack. The ice cream was a little different than what we typically have and was more like frozen mousse than ice cream, lordie it was good. Since we had some time to kill we stopped in at the Thessaloniki version of say Barney's New York; cool store, small inventory, so very expensive. I enjoyed looking but refrained from buying since the unfavorable exchange rate made an already expensive items just ridiculous.

When the two groups finally met up we decided to go see some little churches and then eventually to the Hagia Sophia since we were already reasonably close. Now if any of us had paid ANY attention to any of the 10 books we had about Greece we would have read that most churches close between 1:00 and 4:00 so that didn't really work out for us. We did see one church, Hagia Dimitrios, which had been rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1917 but it did have many of the original icons and some original structure. Because it was a working church, i.e. people were actually there being all observant, I refrained from taking many pictures but I did manage to get a couple which I attached to the post (in case you're wondering why I took pictures in the Blue Mosque which is a working mosque, it's because it wasn't prayer time, they actually close for prayer). After We decide to go back to the hotel and grab some rest and reconvene a little later to go back to Hagia Sophia.

We went back out later and finally got to see Hagia Sophia but they were closing and very much wanted us to leave, they had also turned out several of the lights. Hagia Sophia is also an active church and people were in there praying so picture taking was minimal though one of the women took a phone call so I guess they weren't that sensitive to the interference. Who takes a cell phone call in church?

That night we decide to just go to dinner and try to get to bed early because we had a big day coming on Friday. We went to a rather hard to find restaurant called Aristotleous that served mezze, which is kind of like the Greek version of tapas, you order many common plates and go to town! The food was the best we had eaten in Thessolaniki, everything was so fresh and wonderfully flavored. The red peppers were so pretty when they came out I had to take a picture as evidenced below! As it is in many European countries, dinner was a long late affair and though we started at 8:00 PM, we didn't finish until after 11:00 PM so it was home to bed to prepare for the trip to Nea Kerrasia.
