Si tratterà di un vero e proprio scambio di culture, di suoni. di musica e di amicizia. L'incontro fra i due Maestri E. Materassi e Horst Műller ha di fatto portato ad una collaborazione proficua e soprattutto ad uno scambio di interessi e di conoscenze utili ad entrambe le corali.

I brani che le due corali eseguiranno, spazieranno fra numerosi generi musicali: dal jazz al pop alla musica etnica. Per farvi un'idea del coro sestese vi rimando al video realizzato da Sesto.Tv.

The second album from Joseph Arthur and his band has finally arrived, following four EPs that Arthur started releasing earlier this year. The album isn't exactly what I expected after the EPs, which wandered around quite a lot stylistically and featured some experiments with electronic music. Temporary People is a full on rock album, however, with a 60's hippie folk and psychedelic aesthetic fully updated by Arthur and his fellow musicians for the new century. Longtime Arthur fans looking for songs like "In The Sun" or "Honey And The Moon" might be disappointed, but if you've been following his career of late, you'll know Arthur's been rocking out for awhile now, though on this record, it feels like he's on surer ground. The music sounds more tightly focused and less experimental and improvisational in general than it was on his last LP, Let's Just Be. (Some might say less self-indulgent, too, though for the record, I did like the last album.) Instead of songs that turn into 20 minute jams, a more economical approach to songwriting has been applied here, though Arthur and his band still make room for some sweet guitar jams, as evidenced on the title track. This is Arthur's most satisfying album in years, the capstone on a remarkably creative year for a great singer/songwriter. Standout cuts: "Temporary People," "Faith," "Sunrise Dolls" and "Turn You On."

Förra veckan satt jag på jobbet och garvade åt den där trailern till filmen "Sverige -himmel eller helvete". En italiensk rulle från 1968, bland annat inspelad i Mariaberget i Västerås. (Såg att den finns att köpa för 130 spänn på nätet, är sugen). Det är en så kallad Mondo-film, en italiensk filmtyp som var bizarra fejkdokumentärer, men som drog in en massa jävla stålar runt om i världen. Den här, om den svenska sexualiteten, fri sex, knark, självmord och allt har nog bidragit rätt mycket till omvärldens syn på svenskarna och synden, he-he. Okej, här är trailern, med engelsk text, men som sagt, det tar inte slut härvid. Detta är bara första steget i raketen i dagens inlägg:

The Blank Tapes
Daydreams
(self-released; 2007)

The last single CD album I listened to that boasted a 25 song track list and wasn't a compilation was probably a punk album. With their 2007 release Daydreams, The Blank Tapes have taken that slot, but similarities between this record and some of my old, punk favorites remain; the songs are relatively short, the structure of the music meets basic standards, and each track could be easily switched out for most of the others. This seems to be the case with the majority of genre-dependent bands. When the "style" you aim to achieve supersedes your drive to create new and interesting sounds you're left with music that appeals primarily to people who are hoping to hear something they remember listening to before. Breaking that mold is the least of their concerns.

Thankfully, for us and The Blank Tapes, Matt Adams and his friends make up a pretty talented group. In Daydreams they offer us well played and passionate revisions of old-timey standards in a sound that comes off somewhat like Wilco meets The Black Heart Procession meets The Decemberists. These songs are fun, on point with their fathering genre(s), and sometimes even a little charming. It's just that there's so goddamn many of them! Had the track listing been a bit more concise I could see the potential for a truly brilliant album. In the first half, we're presented with relatively the same idea about fourteen times over. It's not until the refreshing and almost form-breaking song "Smoke and Mirrors" that The Blank Tapes give us something truly different and rock out a bit more than usual. They slide right back into mid-tempo, acoustic character, however, with the following tracks, and don't bring the rock back again until instrumental number "Part the Clouds". The glimpses of change are few and far between, making Daydreams a laborious listen.

I should reiterate that these aren't bad songs. The Blank Tapes' music is wonderfully played and highly enjoyable, but good songs don't always make great albums. I think that a bit of self-editing and experimentation would do this band and their next record a whole lot of good. As Daydreams stands, the album is more susceptible to mixtape fodder than full, uninterrupted rotation.

It's no secret that most people fear empty spaces, whether it's the empty spaces in a conversation, the empty spaces between appointments, or simply the empty spaces between one thought and another – which is why so much of our energy is aimed at filling up these spaces, which is ultimately a very exhausting business. I think one reason why people fear these empty spaces even though they know on some deeper level that space is healthy and good, that space nurtures us, is that space by definition has no function, so when we abide in it we feel as though we are falling short of some larger goal. But what are these goals that we are always occupied with? Are they real goals or they simply about making effort for the sake of keeping busy? Chuang Tzu's story reminds us that if you have a real goal, following the easy and effortless path towards it actually gets you there faster. If you want to cut meat, in other words, don't waste your time hacking away at bone.

When I write songs, it often happens that several ideas will come to me at once and I begin to notice a tension between them, as though they are competing for my attention. I was working on a song last week that I knew was a love song, but it occurred to me that this love could be for a woman or simply for the fact of being alive. All of a sudden I started to feel that I had no idea what I was writing about, no idea what I was trying to say, and I felt that I'd totally lost the thread of my song. Then the self-deprecation set in. After I had gotten stressed out for about ten minutes or so, it occurred to me that it's silly to see two ideas as being in conflict with each other. Ideas don't have volume or mass, I realized, and they aren't like people pushing each other on a crowded train, though it's easy to feel that way sometimes. There's always some way of joining them, of harmonizing them, though the trick is learning not to throw a third idea into the mix and further complicating things. Harmony comes not by saying more, but by being silent and letting empty space find a solution. Stephen Sondheim says he often will write all his ideas for a song on a piece of paper and then go take a nap. When he wakes up, he finds some order has emerged between them. In my case, it wasn't a nap I needed so much as just recording what I had so far, disorganized as it seemed. After listening to it, I realized that the song was really about a new emotion, one I couldn't name yet.

The same goes for feelings we have in the world outside of art. I notice how much I'm tempted to deal with ambiguities in my relationships with others by talking about them. Sometimes talking is cathartic, but often it's very tiring. Recently I've been trying to respond more to difficult emotional situations with silence. Sometimes all that needs to be said is nothing at all.

Y no sólo eso, sino que, además, incorporan una guitarra eléctrica al sonido del grupo cabecera ahora mismo del mítico sello Sub Pop. La canción se llama 'Silver City' y la presentaron en sus dos conciertos con el aforo lleno de este fin de semana. Un dato que refuerza mi idea que crea hypes el rey, crea hypes el Papa, y de hypes nadie se escapa. Que no es algo intrínsecamente británico, vamos. De jonge priester in het kerkje in Parijs was geschokt. Een koppeltje, waarvan het meisje alleen maar Engels sprak, was bij de dekenij komen aankloppen met de vraag of ze dringend konden trouwen. Die twee waren zeker van huis weggelopen. Niet te verwonderen, want het meisje was duidelijk zwanger. Als het van hem had afgehangen... Maar ja, de deken had hem opgedragen het huwelijk te voltrekken. Hij kon het dan ook niet nalaten de bruidegom op het hart te drukken dat het huwelijk een ernstige zaak was. Die vent was trouwens een heel stuk ouder dan het meisje. Die zou toch beter moeten weten…

Behalve het jonge paar zat er in het koude kerkje op die 24ste januari 1959 alleen nog een zwaar bebaarde vent. Ook al zo'n Engelsman. Wat had die hier mee te maken? Hij was een stuk ouder dan de bruidegom, maar toch nog te jong om de vader van de bruid te zijn.

Toen de plechtigheid was afgelopen schudde de priester meewarig zijn hoofd terwijl de drie proestend de kerk uitliepen, waarschijnlijk op zoek naar het korst bijzijnde café.

Het meisje heette Peggy Seeger. Ze was pas 24, maar had al heel wat levenservaring. Ze was afkomstig uit New York, waar ze, net als haar ouders en haar broers, thuis was in de kringen van folkmuzikanten in de buurt Greenwich Village.

Na een bezoek aan China bleek haar paspoort te zijn ingetrokken. De spokenjagers van McCarthy konden zo'n bezoek aan een communistisch land absoluut niet waarderen. Peggy besloot dan maar naar Europa te trekken, waar ze rondtrok met haar banjo. Zo was ze in 1956 in Londen terecht gekomen.

De leidinggevende figuur in de Londense folkkringen was toen de communistische Schot Ewan MacColl (1915 - 1989). Hij was eigenlijk acteur en toneelschrijver. Wanneer hij voor een stuk een liedje nodig, schreef hij dat dan ook maar. Eentje daarvan was ‘Dirty Old Town’ dat hij in 1949 schreef over zijn geboortestad Salford in Lancashire. Het nummer is tegenwoordig vooral bekend in de versie van The Pogues die het brachten op hun tweede LP Rum Sodomy & the Lash in 1985.

Net als Alan Lomax was hij gaandeweg begonnen met het verzamelen van authentieke volksliederen, die hij ook opnam en bijhield. Toen de BBC hem vroeg om iets te maken rond de heroïsche dood van een treinbestuurder, kwam hij met allerlei geluidsopnamen,  fragmenten van echte interviews en door gewone mensen gezongen volksliedjes. De Radio Ballad, zoals het formaat werd gedoopt was een revolutionair idee en de aanzet tot de folkrage van de jaren zestig in Engeland.

Na een kortstondig huwelijk met de actrice Joan Littlewood was Ewan getrouwd met de danseres Jean Newlove. Ze hadden samen twee kinderen: Hamish en Kirsty.

Kirsty MacColl (1959 -2000) zou later een van de allerbeste Britse zangeressen worden. Zo hielp ze dat zelfde zootje ongeregeld die haar vaders 'Dirty Old Town' had gecoverd met één van de allerbeste kerstsingles ooit: ‘Fairytale of New York’. Aan haar carrière en leven kwam abrupt een einde toen ze tijdens het zwemmen voor de kust van Mexico werd aangereden door een arrogante miljonair in een speedboat.

Maar terug naar Ewan. Die werd verliefd op de jonge Amerikaanse en ze begonnen al snel een relatie. Voor een toneelstuk waarin ze meespeelde vroeg zij hem een lied te schrijven. Een uurtje later belde hij haar terug en zong haar wat hij had bedacht. Dat was 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'. In 1971 nam Roberta Flack een tragere, sensuele versie van het nummer op voor het regiedebuut van Clint Eastwood: Play Misty for Me. De single werd een dikke hit: 6 weken op 1 in Amerika en maar liefst 14 weken aan de top in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Toen einde 1958 haar werkvergunning voor Engeland dreigde te verlopen moest er dringend iets gebeuren of Peggy zou het land worden uitgewezen. Door te trouwen zou ze het Britse staatsburgerschap krijgen en zou ze kunnen blijven. Maar Ewan was - hoewel weg bij zijn vrouw - officieel nog getrouwd. Dus besloten ze de hulp in te roepen van een vriend. De Schotse folkzanger Alex Campbell (1925 - 1987) werd bereid gevonden om mee te spelen.

Hoewel "vriend" eigenlijk een slechte omschrijving is. De twee mannen hadden elk een totaal tegengestelde opvatting over folk muziek. Ewan was een purist die vond dat je alleen nummers mocht zingen die uit je eigen streek afkomstig waren, terwijl Campbell alles zong wat hem aanstond, of het nu Schotse balladen waren of Amerikaanse werkliederen, die hij leerde van zijn Amerikaanse vriend, de banjospeler Derroll Adams. (Aan het begin van de jaren tachtig bracht Campbell zelfs een LP uit Live In Belgium - maar dit geheel terzijde).

Eens terug in Engeland, na de hilarische vertoning in Parijs, vroeg iedereen onmiddellijk de scheiding aan en wat later konden Ewan en Peggy met elkaar trouwen. Ze kregen drie kinderen en maakten zowel samen als apart een groot aantal platen. Na de dood van haar man, in 1989, keerde Peggy terug naar Amerika.

En Alex Campbell? Die trouwde later ook "voor echt" en twee van zijn zonen, Ali en Robin, vormden later de kern van de Britse reggae-groep UB40. Na hun sterke debuutplaat herinnert enkel hun naam (UB40 is het formulier dat recht geeft op stempelgeld) nog aan hun linkse achtergrond.

De familie Seeger

Peggy's familie is interessant genoeg om wat verder op in te gaan.

Haar vader was Charles Seeger (1886–1979), een belangrijke musicoloog en folklorist. Charles was muziekleraar aan de University of California in Berkeley, tot hij in 1918 vanwege zijn pacifisme gedwongen werd zijn baan op te zeggen.

Voor hun huwelijk in 1932 was haar moeder, Ruth Crawford (1901- 1953), een componiste van moderne klassieke muziek. Niet onverdienstelijk overigens want ze kreeg als allereerste vrouw de prestigieuze Guggenheim Fellowship. Ze was dan ook één van de sleutelfiguren van de avant-garde uit de twintiger jaren in New York. Als pianolerares voor zijn kinderen bracht de dichter Carl Sandburg haar de liefde bij voor de Amerikaanse volksmuziek.

Kort na de geboorte van Peggy in 1935 verhuisden de Seegers naar Washington, D.C., waar ze met John (1867 - 1948) Lomax gingen werken aan het Archive of Folk Song voor de Congressbibliotheek. Crawford ontcijferde er de teksten van de songs die vader en later ook zoon Lomax verzamelden. Die werden dan gepubliceerd in boeken als Our Singing Country en Folk Song USA.

Ze vond dat Amerikaanse volksliedjes erg geschikt waren om kinderen de liefde voor muziek bij te brengen. Daarom publiceerde ze in 1948 het American Folk Songs for Children - nog steeds een van de best verkochte boeken met kinderliedjes in Amerika. Door dit baanbrekende boek werd zij een centrale figuur in de opleving van de folksongs.

Peggy's jongere broer is Mike Seeger (1933 - ), zelf ook een folkmuzikant en folklorist. In 1958 richtte  hij samen met John Cohen en Tom Paley, de New Lost City Ramblers op. Met die old-time string band stelden zij zich tot doel de oude, vergeten nummers die hun vader had helpen verzamelen, zo getrouw mogelijk terug tot leven te brengen. De groep was van grote invloed op de jonge Bob Dylan die hen herhaaldelijk zag optreden en vele nummers van hen leerde.

Lijnrecht tegenover de New Lost City Ramblers stonden groepen als The Weavers of het Kingston Trio, die zich net tot doel stelden om diezelfde muziek te moderniseren. En de leider van The Weavers was …  Pete Seeger.

Pete (1919- ) was een halfbroer van Peggy en Mike, uit het eerste huwelijk van hun vader. Tijdens de zomer van 1935, nam zijn vader hem mee naar een muziekfestival in Asheville, North Carolina. Hij hoorde er voor het eerst authentieke folkmuziek. Hij werd op slag verliefd op de vijf-snarige banjomuziek en de teksten van de oude ballades over lords en ladies. Dat uitstapje is misschien wel het prille begin van de heropleving van de folkmuziek

In 1938 kreeg Pete ook een baan bij het archief. Hij beluisterde de veldopnamen en selecteerde de tracks die zouden worden uitgebracht op de legendarische reeks "Folk Music of the United States." Zo leerde hij mensen als Leadbelly en Woody Guthrie kennen. In 1940 begon hij met die laatste op te trekken als The Almanac Singers.

In 1948 schreef hij How to Play the Five-String Banjo, een handboek dat talloze banjospelers op weg heeft geholpen. Twee jaar later had hij met zijn groep The Weavers een dikke hit. Hun cover van Leadbelly's 'Goodnight Irene' stond maar liefst dertien weken op 1.

Vanwege zijn links activisme kwam Pete Seeger op de zwarte lijst van McCarthy. Hij werd in 1955 opgepakt en moest zich melden elke keer hij zijn buurt wou verlaten.

Vanaf 1958 begon hij een solo carrière. Hij schreef (soms met een co-autheur) een aantal klassiekers zoals 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone' (een hit voor concurrenten The Kingston Trio, 'If I Had a Hammer' (Trini Lopez) en 'Turn, Turn, Turn!' (The Byrds). Zijn bekendste nummer is echter 'We Shall Overcome' dat door Joan Baez opgenomen en het lijflied werd van de Amerikaanse protestbeweging.

Dat maakte hem natuurlijk nog wat onpopulairder bij de Communistenjagers en hij belandde dan ook in de gevangenis, omdat hij weigerde namen te noemen.

Na zijn vrijlating hielp hij de folktijdschriften Broadside Magazine en Sing Out! oprichten, die hielpen om mensen als Bob Dylan onder de aandacht van ene groter publiek te brengen.

Jammer is dat hij in de Dylan folkore gekend is als de man die met een bijl wou verhinderen dat Bob elektrisch ging spelen tijdens het beruchte Newport Folkfestival in 1965. Zelf legde hij in 2005 uit dat zoiets nooit het geval is geweest: "Er wordt verteld dat ik er op tegen was dat hij met elektrisch versterkte instrumenten speelde, maar dat was niet zo. Ik presenteerde het festival die avond. Hij zong 'Maggie's Farm' en je kon geen woord verstaan omdat de microfoon werd verstoord. Ik liep naar het mengpaneel en riep: 'regel de klank. Het is vreselijk!' Maar die kerel antwoordde: 'Nee, ze willen het zo.' En toen heb ik gezegd dat als ik een bijl had ik de kabel zou doorhakken! Ik wou gewoon de woorden verstaanbaar hebben. Ik had er niks op tegen dat hij elektrisch speelde."

In 1998 werden zijn songs terug onder de aandacht gebracht op de dubbele tribute-cd Where Have All the Flowers Gone: the Songs of Pete Seeger. Daarop speelden mensen uit de Amerikaanse en Britse folk- en rockwereld mee. Eén van die mensen was Bruce Springsteen die er 'We Shall Overcome' op bracht. Dat het hem menens was bewees Bruce zes jaar later  met The Seeger Sessions, waarbij hij een eigen eerbetoon bracht aan de man en zijn kompanen.

Ein neues Album scheint dem bekennenden Workaholic noch nicht genug zu sein und so gab Ryan Adams bekannt dass er am 16. März 2009 sein erstes Buch "Infinity Blues" veröffentlichen wird. Was genau darin stehen wird, ob es ein Sachbuch oder ein Roman sein wird, will Adams noch nicht verraten. Das Vorhaben wurde offziell, als Adams von dem New Yorker Independent-Verlag "Akashic Books" eine Veröffentlichung zugesagt wurde.

I'm sorry the video/audio quality is so bad. I have a webcam that wasn't meant for this.  The washing machine is also a part of our humble little band, apparently. It has a solo at the end of Angel from Montgomery; I'm sure you could hear it.

Now that we've got a few songs ready, Alex and I are going to start looking into playing some open mics around Portland, hopefully in Southeast.  I'll be sure to let you know where we can be found, even though we'll likely only play for ten or fifteen minutes at a time.

In other news, I have my third guitar lesson tomorrow.  I haven't really done my homework (what else is new), but things are coming along fairly steadily.  At the risk of looking like (even more of) an idiot, I've decided to share a video of one of my first songs with you.  I think I'll post new songs pretty frequently, so you can see how things are coming along.  Here's the first installment.  It's Help Me Make it Through the Night, by Kris Kristofferson.

I have more videos than the ones I'm posting here.  All of them can be found on my YouTube page. You can check there regularly for updates.  I just don't think it's fair to subject the entire blogosphere to everything I record!

The band makes harmoniously lush rock that recalls My Bloody Valentine, Beach Boys, Ariel Pink, Thee Oh Sees, Nirvana, psychedelic rock meets folk rock that is hell bent on gender bending. Napotkałem wielowymiarową kalkę, kalkę na uszy. Jest i Chumbawamba we wcieleniach sielsko-anarchistycznych, jest Cranberries [chyba tak to się pisze?], jest Pink Floyd, jest nawet mniej basowy Nick Cave. Jest lekko patetycznie, cokolwiek bógwiejak i na dodatek sentymentalnie jest. Do tego dochodzi rewelacyjna produkcja, brak niedociągnięć realizacyjnych, niegłupi pomysł i... ogólnie perfekcyjny album. Chociaż alternatywny.

A co pokrótce o albumie ma do powiedzenia wydawca? [WM Recordings, nazwa- wyznacznik sama w sobie]: "An electronic-organic-independent-pop-alternative-folk-ambient album, not more or less". Nie sposób się z tym nie zgodzić.

PS. Przyzwyczaj się proszę do tego, że pisać będę niewiele. Za dużo netaudio słyszałem, żeby jarać się byle czym. Dlatego jeno rzeczy godne i zacne wrzucę w cykl no comment, a te wymagające szczególnej promocji [jak niniejsza] opiszę jak teraz, gdy nawiedzi mnie chęć. Barachłem zajmować Twoich uszu [i trzewi] nadal nie zamierzam, skoncentruję się na esencji najlepszej, co najlepszym przykładem będzie 10, najlepsza niesencja. Bo unikalnie jubileuszowa. A jeden numer z tej płyty na dziesiątce się znajdzie.

Bo uwielbiam pisać. Momentami. A jak chcesz rzecz sciągnąć, to klinij na powyższą okładkę. Dziękuję.

I apologize for having taken so long to include our second Feature from Etsy for 10/5, however this morning I have found the perfect companion to our lovely floralie, in  a seller who operates under the name thebuddhabuilder on Etsy.com

We are absolutely fascinated by all of the wonderful visages and sculptures of the Buddha which this shop has to offer, as well as her philosophy and purpose behind choosing such a specific subject. She shares on her profile that, "They also represent an exploration of the question, what does Buddha look like? After all, the word "buddha" means "to wake up" or "the awakened one". So what does openness of mind look like?"

We ask ourselves a series of similar questions each time we approach a new canvas, so we can relate and connect with each of the pieces she currently has listed in her Etsy Shoppe, thebuddhabuilder, in new and deeply healing ways.
