I was bumming around on facebook again when I noticed something strange. Aside: Must stop doing this. Facebook only worsens terminal boredom, and I really need to find some less pathetic form of entertainment.

If you want to add religion to your profile information, you can basically type anything, even "Planet Nibiru's Witness". But facebook does have a few template ones that pop up when you type in a starting letter. So I was just exploring..you get all the usual athiest, agnostic etc. if you type 'a', and all the denominations of christianity if you type 'c', example christian - anglican. However, the really really weird thing is you can also be Christian - Amish.

Now..why on earth would an Amish person have facebook? Aren't you supposed to renounce all modern technology? Unless you're a lapsed Amish but then you'd be kicked out wouldn't you?

Aint it weird what folk will do and say? Le interweb serves us up a juicy war-of-words-turned-l

Aint it weird what folk will do and say? Le interweb serves us up a juicy war-of-words-turned-legal-issue between a renowned Kiwi blogger and a little known zleb, or is that wannabe zleb? Lowest of the low. Tis even lower than us unknown scum. Oh yes.

Pearl Going is a who in the who's who of "Planet Socialite", according to NZ Herald Spy gossip queen Rachel Glucina. The Gluc's recent article dropped a few names (more folk that I've never heard of, no doubt cementing my ignorant scum status) that Pearl is palsy with, and generally touted Going as a "socialite with a purpose". Radical concept, eh? Bear with.

Pearl Going, Kiwi socialite: “Sexy is genuine. Realness is sexy”.

Kate Bosworth, American actress: "Who is Pearl Going?"

Kiwi blogger Whaleoil put down the blubber and instead inhaled eau de sneaky rat. Knowing the Gluc's record for poor fact-checking, WO performed some research over at Uncy Google's house and found some interesting bits of cached and not-so cached info and blogged about it. With Whaleoil's record for un-PC, unreservedness, his post included some juicy allegations and questions stemming from claims and pics on Pearl's Facebook and (now removed) Yahoo profile pages:

Attendance at esteemed Universities who have no record of her ever attending, including Otago and Oxford

Claims of being in GQ magazine

Claims photographs of Kate Bosworth are actually her

Claims photographs of New York socialites standing next to even bigger, more well known (to people less scum class than Lita) New York socialites are actually her

Pearl, unhappy that Whaleoil was sullying her good (but until now, unknown) name, asked her Daddy to intervene, and he gave the big WO a big ole telling off in his comments box. Lawyers were threatened, and now they have set action against Whaleoil's website host, so his original post has had to be removed. Uhoh spaghetti-o!

Luckily for us, the interweb cannot be stopped. The minute you take something down, and particularly if it's known to be done under duress, another five of 'em pop up somewhere else. A certain anonymous someone has already reproduced copies of the original, supposedly spurious, posts about Pearl Going. You can view them at PearlGoingisafake.com, along with more PR faux pas courtesy of Pearl, her Papa and their lawyers.

Whaleoil's claim that Going's bath photo is in fact a picture of Kate Bosworth from a recent GQ magazine shoot was said to be defamatory by Pearl's lawyer, who believes the picture to be a clever imitation. Ahem, whatevs. Get thee to an optician Mr Lawyer.

In fact, it is Ms Going, though the photo was taken to imitate Kate Bosworth’s pose. The difference in their hair lengths is obvious to anyone looking closely. Again, the suggested deception is defamatory of Ms Going.

PGIAF commenter 'Kate Bosworth' provides a handy recap of Pearl's full life to date:

No doubt that the latest online trend in today’s society is social networking. MySpace paved

No doubt that the latest online trend in today's society is social networking. MySpace paved the way for the new dominating trend that has taken many teens and preteens by storm. Its successor, Facebook is growing rapidly throughout North America and is bound to have more users registered than the original social network, MySpace. It has caught on in Europe and is the most popular social networking site in the UK, and it is slowly creeping towards the rest of the world and even in Asia and South America.

The reason why Facebook became such a dominating force in the web world is because it has seen the flaws of MySpace and has improved on them. MySpace was the latest trend and if you did not have a MySpace page, you were considered to be uncool. No one wants to be uncool, everyone wants to be cool, stay with the cool crowd, know what everyone is up to, and especially no parents knew about it. MySpace was, 'the shit' unfortunately online predators caught on with the network and started luring young innocent children, boys and girls into arranging dates to meet up with each other. Once the stories of the children being kidnapped and raped and such appeared on mainstream television, parents, well everyone just went ballistic. Due to the controversies of how easy it is for a pedophile to arrange a date with someone on MySpace, the social networking site just plummeted and no one uses it anymore.

Then comes along Facebook, created by Mark Zuckerberg (yes it is Wikipedia). The reason why it became so popular is because it was just like MySpace, and A LOT more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. MySpace is really cluttered and it is a miracle for someone to navigate their way through comments, postings, and pictures. Facebook became very, very popular with the teens due to its enhanced security features that MySpace did not have. For MySpace, anyone can add you as a friend and anyone can see your profile, if you don't click on that privacy option. With Facebook, only your friends and people in the same geographical or school network can view your account. What a great way to deter pedophiles. Commenting or posting on someone's wall is much more easier in Facebook. All one does is write their comment and cick on the post button. Using some very elegant PHP and MYSQL coding, the comment is posted up on the page in a second or so. With MySpace, well that is a whole other story. First you write the comment, then you click post, then it redirects to a page to confirm that what you wrote is what you want on the page, AND then it makes you type in a CAPTCHA (to prevent spam bots) to confirm the post. It can take up to a minute to write a post; what a waste of time. So Facebook has become the new kid on the block in which everyone is talking about. Teenagers love it, website designers love it, and even parents prefer it over Facebook (prefer instead of love, because there are some parents who do not trust the website after the whole MySpace controversy). So what's not to like about it? It has become 'the shit', the place for all the cool kids to to meet up at figuratively speaking that is. Unfortunately, the non tech savvy users do not know that Facebook is as dangerous and can be more dangerous than MySpace.

First off, a story about a college student who seriously injured a person in a car crash while under the influence of alcohol. Joshua Lipton was at a party in halloween wearing a Jail suit and holding a can of redbull. Picture of him were taken and not surprisingly, they were posted on Facebook. During his trial, the prosecutor with the help of the victim's friend was able to obtain the crazy party photos of Joshua as he partied all night long that Halloween night. Using these pictures that were readily available, the prosecutor was able to depict Joshua as an "unrepentant partier who lived it up while his victim recovered in the hospital". The judge also agreed with the prosecutor and instead of maybe probation and some community service, the judge sentenced Joshua to two years in jail. It is not looking good for Joshua, and it goes to show you that pictures on Facebook can bite you in the ass.

Pictures can be very, very embarrassing to people especially pictures of them drunk. In Joshua Lipton's case though, it got him two years in jail (he will probably appeal the decision though, maybe he'll get out with a lighter sentence but who knows). The photos can actually even make people famous over night, but not in a good way; for example the people who dressed up as the victims of the Virginia Tech Masacre. Even in poor taste someone will still do it, but this one, wow not good.

Facebook can also destroy your future. There has been a big huge storm surrounding Facebook when employers revealed that they tried to go on prospective applicants' facebook pages and see their pictures to see what they are like in real life which evidentally can take a candidate out of the running. Employers have even went through the trouble of contacting Facebook employees and asking them to go inside the accounts of prospective employees and give them access to their personal information and as well as 'embarrassing' photos.

The whole stalking thing with people these days or 'creepers' all comes from the pictures that people put up. If there is a hot girl that someone wants to see pictures of, you can't just add that person as they probably won't know you. But the hack-savvy 'creepers' these days can URL hack their way into their targets' photo albums which is very creepy and scary. Facebook has probably cleared this problem up and created a new form of random access, hexadecimal coding enclosure (I don't know what I'm saying here) preventing these 'creepers' and potential pedophiles from seeing pictures of not so legal teenagers. There is also PHP, MYSQL, AJAX, Javascript manipulation that the pro coders can exploit in order to hack their way into facebook accounts or do some crazy stuff like the i-frame hack, but not that many people can do it...yet! Soon they will and Facebook will have this problem. Although once they find a bug/exploit they will fix that problem immediately, but there will come a time when an exploit surfaces and they can't fix it.

Another problem with Facebook is that once you 'delete' your account, you do not actually delete your account, all you do is make it innactive. When one deactivats their account and reactivates it, they are shown their page without any changes. Thus meaning, the person did not actually delete their account, they just made it dormant. It is a good feature for those who reactivate their accounts and do not want to go through the process of adding their friends again and posting old/new pictures. The problem is, Facebook does not actually delete your account. Once you deactivate it and 'think' you have deleted your information, Facebook still keeps your private information on their servers which if hacked, can be devastating. Also as well as the fact that employers can go in and ask the employees to look at your 'deleted' account. It is not a nice feeling knowing that your personal information is still stored in computers and servers wating to be hacked. It used to be, the only way to actually delete your account is to call the company and harrass them daily until they actually go into the servers and delete your account. Why would someone need to call a website to delete their own information off the servers? It is very time consuming for the user and costly for the website. Not to mention and pain the ass to just harrass them daily. Now the company has made it simpler for one to completely delete their account; the user can actually go into their account and choose to delete it. Unfortunately, this option is very, very hard to find in the account which will lead many to just give up on searching for it and just deactivate their account.

One great thing about Facebook is the applications platform that it has created. The networking site has allowed third party developers to develop fun games and applications for users to play around with. One of the most famous applications is the 'Jetman' application which has become very addictive to everyone on Facebook. It is a complete rip-off of the Helicopter flash game that was published many years before MySpace was developed, but no one really cares as no one is gaining any money from it. But is that true? It turns out that the third party applications when added steal the information of the person's Facebook account and adds it to a database of users for the third party developers' own use. Some applications even can as far as looking into your friends' pages and copying down their information. The BBC News wrote a story on this very controversial and quite possibly life ruining flaw in social network. Even though probably less than ten percent of all the applications being developed are used by most of the Facebook population, many malicious developers can create applications with hidden directives, directives that tell the application to copy down the user's identity and their friend's identity. This flaw shows a major concern in the privacy of Facbeook users and as well as this type of flaw can lead to theft identity, which can put someone in financial debt. Quite possibly put someone in the situation of what the new movie 'Eagle Eye'; shows.

These stories and links are just a sample of the problems that Facebook has with its design and coding. By the time this post has been published, maybe most of these flaws/bugs/exploits have been fixed as many of these flaws are old news, about two years old or three years maybe. Still, Facebook is a great platform for social networking nad most likely will become the benchmark model for all social networking sites...except for twitter. That network is completely different. Even though many of the good things that Mark and his team of coders have developed/developing, the bad will always outweigh the good as with every new feature that Facebook releases, someone will find a bug or a flaw and find a way to exploit the network to their own advantage. Still, Facebook will be the number one social networking site for years to come. No other site other than MySpace (but thats on the verge of collapsing) will ever come close to the status Facebook has attained in the eyes of today's society. It is considered to be the perfect way to communicate and keep in touch with everyone you know. Orkut might have a chance but Google has a LOOOOOOOONG way. Hey, if Orkut does manage to beat out Facebook, looks like Google will become the new Microsoft! But that's a completely different story for now.

I was on Ping.fm, about to ping a status across the board, when I started thinking about the number of Social Networking sites I'm on. Currently on Ping.fm I'm pinging Brightkite, Facebook, FriendFeed, hi5, Identi.ca, Jaiku, kwippy, LinkedIn, Mashable, Myspace, Plurk, Pownce, Tumblr, and last but DEFINITELY not least, Twitter.

I got to thinking, out of all of those sites, which ones do I actually use on a daily basis? If I were to visit ALL of the sites I use in socialMe, it'd be overkill. In fact, it would have to be a full-time job to have to keep up with it all. The main sites I use are Twitter (obviously), Facebook, and FriendFeed. I used to use Brightkite but as-of-late I've started to get comfy with Loopt; once Brightkite makes an iPhone app I'll probably move back. I've also ressurected my Myspace account to reach my Myspace audience, which suprisingly is large; I usually point Myspace to the younger demographic (10-16).

Obviously, this led me to ask, why do I have all of these accounts and not use them? My first answer is to reach a larger audience. Twitter has a large user base already, but there are other users out there that use Plurk or Jaiku more than Twitter. I want to everyone in the world to know my name, so naturally I make an account on those sites. Thinking deeper, my first answer was a good one, but not what led me to sign up for the sites initially. Everyone, by now, has been acquainted with the Fail Whale I assume. So when Twitter goes down, we all flock to another site.

Oh okay, so that's why I signed up!

Yes, one of the reasons, but not the one I was looking for. Then it hit me! After recovering from the blow from the candle falling on my foot, I remembered why I signed up for Plurk. Leo Laporte sent a tweet over the airwaves asking everyone to join him on Plurk. When I saw the "LeoLaporte" name and the words "join me" I quickly launched Mobile Safari. I was sitting in Moe's eating lunch, surfing as fast as EDGE would let me. Ignoring the conversations that were going on, most of which were directed at me, I was tapping away at my iPhone signing up for my account. Finally when it was all over I went back to my conversations, setting a reminder to check out Plurk when I get home. It was a similar situation with FriendFeed. I got Robert Scoble's tweet about how he was ignoring Twitter and moving almost exclusively to FriendFeed. Two minutes later I had a Friend Feed account. Both of these tweets, by the way, were done when Twitter was experiencing (almost expected at the time) the fail whale.

So, for most of the sites that I now don't use, I signed up almost instantaneously because big names in SocialMe and New Media mentioned them. I do somewhat feel like a sheep, but I do have readers that use other services more than Twitter and reach my media from there. I also move to these sites when Twitter experiences downtime, thankfully not as often now. Even though I do have all of these accounts, I like many always move back to Twitter.

Why do I use Twitter? I feel it's a great service with an already large - and may I add extremely loyal - fan base, there are many tools for bloggers and socialMe fiends like myself that integrate seamlessly with it, and there are many native programs for both Mac and Windows for the service. Yes, Plurk is more stable and has a different take on the time-line, Brightkite has location based services, and FriendFeed binds all of the services together, but I'm always going back to Twitter in the end. So, for now, I'll stick with it and Ping.fm.

What are your thoughts on the socialMe circuit?

By the way, the new Ping.fm beta code is "thispingsforyou" :)

there are about a million social networks to be a part of today, aside from facebook and myspace. we

there are about a million social networks to be a part of today, aside from facebook and myspace. we've also got friendster, virb, linkedin, brightkite...the list goes on and is not limited to online dating like eharmony or match dot com.

oh yes, and the blogs.

i find it so interesting that in this day and age our peers are so willing to dish out information about themselves on the internet. do you think it's easier to be more open with a complete stranger?

i say, yes.

statistics show that this generation is more about community than past. they see a hope and a future and i believe they will change the world with their charitable fervor.

perhaps online communities are now an extension of who we are. this past spring, for example, at a local film festival, the general question of the hour was, "are you on facebook?" so we could all 'link up' later and keep in touch. clever.

hmm. what ever happened to sending the occasional letter? you know, i still try to do this. before my nana passed away, this was how we communicated. sometimes we would talk on the phone, but she was first and foremost my pen pal. she would send me articles about what was happening in her town. i would send her lemon drops and books of what i was reading. i loved hearing her story through mail.

but when you think about it, isn't writing letters the same as writing...say your profile's favorite interests, online? is commenting on someone's wall or sending a text just something you would normally say over the phone? or does this use less brain power thus dulling our sensitivity to say...enjoying a beautiful day?

i recently joined twitter and now follow about 14 different people, including barak obama. (that's right!) one user recently commented this way:

Carrying a camera changes how I see and think. How's Twitter shifting my experience?

fellow bloggers, do you ever catch yourself saying, 'oh this would make a great post!' and surely we've all been guilty of taking that one picture for our facebook profile. the point is, we walk life through the lens of our online community of choice. at least it's beginning to seem that way.

(don't call me, surely.)

so is all this online community-ing changing the way we view the world? is this positively or negatively affecting our minds and our sense of being? will we just all morph into one online robot?

my fear is someday, in the very near future, we will resort to an online mess of youtube and chats and moments of watching old chevy chase movies and baking cookies from scratch together on a sunday afternoon will be a thing lost and forgotten.

conversely, if we aren't part of these networks, are we already lost and forgotten?

just some thoughts.

it's 1am...

...and this might be the fish talking.

Yeah am refering to Second Life. And companies are even hiring in virtual space. Talk about shrinking space! Orkut and Facebook presence have seem to become like an essential parts of our lives. I mean friends ask you " You are on Orkut? " , " Why dont you join Facebook, its more fun ?"
We have no time to meet our friends so we create escape routes. Looks like the world is going that way. Oh by the way the fable of Mr. Orkut creating orkut to find his long lost girl friend seems to be just a fable. Cheers!

Semestermode.

Så in i helvete.

Men ni mailar. Tack.

Men ibland måste man få släppa taget.

Riktigt bra.

Max Levchin recently wrote an interesting post titled "On social ad revenues", which evaluates different approaches to social application development and the prospects for monetizing these applications. This post is essentially outlining the different approaches of Slide and RockYou, and explaining why he thinks (you guessed it) Slide's approach is superior. He basically likens RockYou's approach to that of a social ad network, and concludes that "the more your business looks like that of an ad network (augmented or not by the current sex appeal of being “social”), the less ultimately valuable it is." He positions Slide on the other end of this spectrum, implicitly stating that their focus is on depth of engagement and creating what he calls an "inner-brand" (read: "e.g. 'I go to Facebook when I want to SuperPoke people when I want to be clever,' to toot my own horn").

I won't pretend to know the answer here, but in principal I have to agree with Max about the inherent challenges that the "proprietary apps augmented by partner apps" approach presents - you have no control of engagement on partners' apps. Social app developers are in the business of creating social media programming, and leaving some of the creation of that programming to others is inherently a risky proposition. But to be fair, if companies like RockYou are discerning in their selection of who they let into their partner network and trust that these partners have and will continue to create engaging apps, in theory they can create a hybrid of proprietary and network apps that collectively have greater reach than could their own apps by themselves. The potential risk is that the "inner-brand" of your proprietary programming is undermined, but the potential reward is that your partners can create vertically focussed programming that is better for these verticals than the programming that you could create on your own - again increasing reach. With so few ad dollars being spent on this type of content today, the hybrid approach and the reach it brings does have its benefits, but what that will do to eCPMs as this industry matures is the (at least hopefully) billion dollar question... You can see where Slide and RockYou are putting their chips, and you have to love the competitive energy between these two.

Facebook said it was "seeking to end StudiVZ's illegal activity to ensure that users are not confused and that Facebook's reputation remains unharmed".

Facebook becomes a campaign site for the Obama campaign

Lipton seems to be a master of unfortunate decision making. He was recently sentenced to two years in state prison for Driving Under the Influence in Rhode Island. This occurred after the prosecutors located photographs of Lipton posted on facebook.com which showed him dressed as an inmate. These photos were taken approximately two weeks after Lipton was arrested for DUI after being involved in an accident which injured the other driver.

I don't believe we should be adjudicating morality. That leads us down a dangerous path, but lets be honest, we've been doing it for ages. When our law can be traced directly back to Mosaic (the Ten Commandments) law, it's pretty obvious that morals play some part in our judicial minds. The courts have allowed this sort of information to be submitted in the sentencing phase of a trial for a reason. If we are to have a fair and equitable system, we need to be able to examine each case and each defendant on their own merit. Clearly, most people are repentant in court, so we look to other means for discovering their true feelings. In the past, it was testimony of friends and co-workers who overheard phone calls or heard the water-cooler discussions. Now, it comes from MySpace and Facebook, sooner or later, it will be a blog, too.

No one blames the defense attorney for using every tool at his disposal to assist his client. This is not the same with the prosecution. A good deal of the time when a prosecutor uses a new or strange technique to get his point across, it is attacked by society. People have been held liable in the court of the internet for years. News stories pop up periodically where someone is fired because of something their boss saw on their web page. This case is just another of the courts finally catching up with society.

Now, let's be honest. The only reason anyone cares about Joshua Lipton (aside from the other driver, who has a marginal interest in the case, I think) is because this was a DUI. It is the most socially acceptable crime. Most people who drink, if they were honest, would have to say to themselves "Yes, I've driven when I probably shouldn't have." Well, Joshua Lipton did the same and someone else had to pay for that choice. Lets remember, Josh didn't choose to post those photographs on the internet himself, one of his friends did.

I guess Joshua just learned a hard lesson about paying for someone else's choices.

That's what a cop thinks (well, this one, anyway)

Posted by Tilia

Guitar Guy Rumors

So, Friday night, I was approached by the Prom Queen bartender, who treats the club like her own personal high school. She said to me, "So, I hear you're dating Guitar Guy. Congratulations. He's hot." I dispelled this rumor, telling her that he has a girlfriend, and that we just flirt a lot.

Tonight (Saturday), Prom Queen and Lead Bartender (the one who asked him if we were back together yet), spent many hours attempting to gather information from other servers about the time he kissed my cheek/neck area on the way out the door, etc. etc. etc.

Prom Queen definitely wants to hook up with Guitar Guy. I've heard her talking about it. It likely infuriates her that he would pay attention to someone else.

I'm about 75% sure they've at least mentioned something to him at this point.

I may have to kill them.

Guitar Guy in Actuality

Beginning of the night was very disparaging. He blew past me twice upon entry without acknowledging me at all. This is almost certainly deliberate, as he used to seek me out and make a big production when he'd come in for the evening.

Eye contact returned to controlled level. Went un-monitored for a majority of the first half of the evening as I was both irritated and swamped with work, and had no time to check to see if he was looking back at me.

I allowed the host/lead singer to lean into my personal space and chat me up. I think he saw.

I hope he saw. I hope it pissed him off.

Then, he ordered food from me. Confusing. He asked as though he wasn't sure if I was okay taking the order. I told him I'd be offended if he asked someone else.

He laughed, but I was really fucking serious.

During "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" we had a long, long intense eye-contact encounter. Similar to the one from a few nights ago during "I can't make you love me." Considering we used to have our most notable moments during songs like, "Livin' on a Prayer," "Talk Dirty to Me," and "Pour Some Sugar on Me," I find this depressing, even in its small grains of hope.

At the end of the night, whilst being violently encouraged by one of my favorite co-workers to go "tap that" while I still had time, and being informed every time he looked at me (which was frequently, and I enjoy this information), I remained confused.

He left with a wave. I chased him out and demanded a hug. This was done in good humor, and didn't feel sexy, just fun.

Tonight, I found him on facebook. I will likely obsess for days on whether or not to add him.

Jenna's Affair

The Affair has not officially happened.

Yet.

Jenna doesn't have text messaging capabilities on her phone. This is a huge impairment.

Cole, the manager in question, seems to be seriously confused about the fact that he's now been given a green light. This may be due to the fact that Jenna is significantly out of his league.

He seems to be planning a romantic getaway for them. Jenna and I are horrified by this idea. She just wants a meaningless hook-up.

Hopefully this will be communicated soon, and executed.

Divorce is on the horizon for Jenna, it just doesn't make fiscal sense right now. I swear we aren't horrible people.

My Flight to London

Departs August 4th, 4:49pm

Arrives August 5th, 10:00am

Jane will be picking me up and feeding me lunch.

This has turned into a successful venture, hasn't it? I can tell how dedicated I am, and how easily I forget things. I haven't even been busy, just forgetful. It's summer, what could I possibly have going on? Nothing.

I don't even have anything to write about now. I just feel like I should. I'm listening to Journey, talking to friends on AIM, and trying to get the cat to stop stepping all over my keyboard. A very exciting existence.

I guess the reason I can't seem to get myself to write on this thing is because I don't really care to share my opinions about things. I always feel like I'm not informed enough to talk about the things I feel.

I'm an Obama supporter, but I don't think I know enough about politics to support my choice. I always find myself getting caught in conversations about who I do and do not support and I can never give a reason why, and I get eaten alive by whoever I'm talking to.

I'm pro-choice, but don't like getting in arguments about it. A baby is a huge life changer, and if a woman isn't ready for that change, or got pregnant in a situation that was against her will, she should have the right to terminate the pregnancy.

I'm a celebrity gossip whore. I visit PerezHilton.com every day.

I'm obsessed with YouTube. But, I don't think it's a good way to get "discovered." People who open YouTube accounts solely to get a recording contract or a big acting deal should probably actually try to make a living in that field first. It's a cop-out way to "make it big."

I hate MySpace but I love Facebook. I just wish they hadn't opened up Facebook to anyone other than college students.

I hate people that are considered to be "awesome" because they play the guitar. But I wish I could play. Pianos just aren't as portable.

I go to PostSecret.com every week. Reading other people's secrets makes me feel better about my own.

I guess that's enough for now. This is probably what my blog will end up being. Little list-like installments of my thoughts and opinions. I guess it could be worse...right?

One of the amazing stats of Church history is that in the year 100 AD there was approximately 25,000

One of the amazing stats of Church history is that in the year 100 AD there was approximately 25,000 Christians in the Roman world. Only a couple of centuries late in the year 310 AD there was approximately 20,000,000 Christians. This statistic is often used today by all kinds of organizations and churches as an inspiration for how the church can grow.

However there are a few crucial differences between the early church and the context that we find ourselves in today. I want to explore just one of these. That is the concept of Relational Depth and Relational Breadth.

Relational Breadth is basically the amount of people that you know. In his book The Tipping Point Malcolm Gladwell notes that if you want to spread an idea or create a movement, it is essential to have a wide group of acquaintances to whom you can share you ideas with. One of the key factors in allowing people to have relational breadth is technology and security. The early church existed in a time of great technological advance, the Roman road and system of governance made travel relatively safe and quick, the common languages of Latin and Greek made communications across ethnic groups possible. Once Rome began to wain and the Dark ages set in, the gospel not only slowed down in its movement, but it actually retreated with many former Roman subjects returning to paganism.

Today globalization and technology offers us tremendous opportunities for relational breadth. You can become facebook friends with someone you have never met in Iran and begin chatting to them online, exchanging photos and stories. Soon the biggest speaking English country in the world will be India, Chinese and Spanish are spoken across the globe in all kinds of environments. Jet travel acts like a modern day Roman road, allowing people to quickly traverse the globe.

However what the early church had that we don't have is relational depth. Being one of the great trading races, many cities in the Roman Empire had a Jewish minority, complete with Synagogues and neighbourhoods. After the destruction of the temple in 70 AD Jewish refugees poured out of Israel and into the Roman world. If you were a Jewish Christian and you wanted to share the gospel, you could pretty much point to a Mediterranean city on a map and be able to find an uncle, cousin or someone from your old neighbourhood to go and stay with.

You would be able to rock up at your third cousins house and thanks to middle eastern hospitality traditions be taken in as a long lost son, be fed, and live with your Jewish kinfolk. You had deep coventantal commitments to your relatives and fellow Jews. The kind of social commitment that is rarely seen today.

Now the thing to remember was that most city dwellers lived in Roman apartments which were extremely cramped, the rooms had little or no ventilation and were dark and dank. So most people in apartments hung out in the courtyard, you literally lived in your family and neighbours pockets. So you could not hide your behaviour. People saw how you were at your best and your worst, they saw how you treated to business partners, your spouse and your kids, if you were a spiritual fraud you would be spotted in seconds. This was relational depth, you lived in deep community with people even if you were just passing through town. Thus when Christians arrived their witness was on display for everyone to see. Their example shone out.

However today with our tremendous relational breadth, we have little relational depth. Sure you might be able become friends with someone in Iran, and talk chat online with them about your favourite album; but you have no idea what they get up to in their real life. They could sell crack cocaine from a school bus for all you know. We move jobs today often, we move homes, we even move cities, many rarely see family, we don't even know the names of the people in our street. This creates tough turf for the growth of the gospel.

In order for the gospel to grow again, we need to match the breadth of our relationship, with depth of relationships. In our facebook world where it is possible to have a thousand friends on your page, but still sit at home lonely. Part of our kingdom mandate is to go deeper with people, to again create depth of relationship, the growth of the gospel depends on it.

Developing a Facebook Platform application from your local machine (with Ruby on Rails)

You have a laptop, a sever and a facebook app.

Ideally, Facebook would talk to your development machine - but what if you don't have a static ip address and you can't use dynamic dns or port forwarding?

Reverse SSH Tunneling is what you need my friend.

The following is a step by step tutorial of what you need to do to have ports on your server forwarded to your local machine via ssh.

Step 1: Server Side

Add "GatewayPorts yes" into your sshd_config file:

sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config

-- add or edit the GatewayPorts variable, control-O to save, control-X to exit

Reload ssh:

sudo /etc/init.d/ssh reload

Step 2: Your Client

Run the tunnel:

ssh -nNT -g -R 3000:localhost:3000 me@myserver.com

If you want port 1 on your server to go to port 2 on your local it will look like:
ssh -nNT -g -R 1:localhost:2 you@yourserver.com so you can forward any port on your server to the standard -p 3000 that your rails server is running on.

Extra-Magic Step: Adding a bit of Rock & Roll

Add an alias to your ~/bash_profile:

alias sshtunnel="ssh -nNT -g -R 3000:0.0.0.0:3000 joseph@jorgeluisgorgeous.com"

Add your public key to the server for password free login

Thanks to Paul McKeller for getting me started on this

Wer hat’s noch nicht gelesen? Facebook verklagt StudiVZ! Diese oder eine ähnliche Überschrif

Wer hat's noch nicht gelesen? Facebook verklagt StudiVZ!

Doch was steckt dahinter?

In its complaint, Facebook accused StudiVZ of copying entire portions of the site’s design, including features such as Facebook’s distinctive “wall”, which allows users to leave messages on each other’s profile pages.

It claimed that any differences between the two sites were “nominal” and accused StudiVZ of merely “replacing Facebook’s blue colour scheme with a red one”.

Wow, life really caught up with me the past few months. I've been busy developing a personal balanced scorecard, launching Aquent's Facebook presence, visiting Southeast Asia, among other stuff. Since then, Raven-Symone finally released her album featuring Double Dutch Bus. And, College Road Trip was released on Blu Ray and DVD.

Meanwhile, I realized that Double Dutch Bus has its own Facebook! Looks like it was created by some kids in the mid-West. I think I need to do some work as a contributor to make a it a little more interesting.
