England defender Rio Ferdinand admits that his success at club level has left him hungry for international honours with the Three Lions.

Since joining Manchester United in 2002, Ferdinand has won a plethora of team honours including the Champions League, three Premier League titles and a Carling Cup. He missed out on a medal for United's most recent FA Cup success in 2004 due to the ban he was serving for a missed drugs test.

As a result of the prizes he has gained in the colours of United, Ferdinand has been made all the more eager to win prizes for his country.

England have not been beyond the semi-final stage of any major tournament in over a decade and the 29 year-old Ferdinand is determined to make a dent on the international game, saying that his England career has been a 'disappointment' up to now.

He told the press:

"With England I have been very disappointed.

"It's not just that I have never won anything with England, I have not even been in a position to win something by getting to a major final.

"I regard that is disappointing and the hunger to achieve something is only enhanced by the trophies I have won with Manchester United."

As well as becoming a mainstay in the United line-up and winning major honours at Old Trafford, Ferdinand has been handed the captian's armband in the absence of more senior colleagues.

It is a role with which he is comfortable, and he may be asked to skipper the England side on Saturday against Kazakhstan if John Terry is ruled out.

The Chelsea captain is struggling with a lower-back injury, and the door could be opened for Ferdinand to take control of the leadership duties for the World Cup qualifier at Wembley.

Terry and Ferdinand were considered two of the main candidates for the permanent captaincy by Fabio Capello, with Terry just shading his Red Devils' counterpart in the eyes of the Italian.

Although the FA has not yet confirmed Terry's absence, Matthew Upson and Joleon Lescott are understood to have been briefed about starting the game.

Saturday was FA Cup day and a trip to Halesowen for their game vs Gainsborugh was the order of the day. In a weird quirky way Halesowen beat Meir in the last round who I had in the FA Cup game I had done earlier this season. Halesowen pulled of somewhat of an upset beating Gainsbourgh 3-0.

It was a straight forward line with only a few offsides to get involved in. Also Mr Assessor seemed happy enough and no development points and a 77 will do for now.

Football has been bad recently. Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Young Boys was FC Basel

Football has been bad recently. Saturday's 2-1 defeat at home to Young Boys was FC Basel's first at home in the Swiss League since December last year. But we could see it coming. Against a well-drilled and typically aggressive YB side they lacked ideas. We can be so frustrating to watch at times. Is there a Plan B? We often don't need one, such is the lack of competition in this division, but I question Christian Gross' ability sometimes to change things around.

In the second half we got worse. In the opening period I thought the game was pretty even, but the visitors got their noses in front. The second half was lacklustre and Basel did not force enough pressure.

We have to fear the worst for our trip to Lisbon to face Sporting in the Champions League on Wednesday night. It could be a crucial point in the season for the Rotblau with a trip to Grasshoppers on Sunday following hot on the heels. I have a sense of pessimism.

Better news from leafy Hertfordshire as Bishop's Stortford negotiated the banana skin of Wingate & Finchley in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round thanks to a hat-trick from Danny Harris in a 3-2 victory. And Blues have been rewarded with another very winnable game at home to lower division Rugby Town. Victory over the team from the Midlands would see them just one game away from the FA Cup First Round Proper.

Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has admitted that although he is enjoying his football, the subject of retirement is never from his thoughts.

The Welshman has a year left on his current contract and despite reports suggesting the Premier League champions may offer him a contract extension, he revealed he would only stay at Old Trafford is he was to play regularly.

"I’m feeling good at the moment and, as long as I feel healthy, I’m getting picked and I still enjoy it, then I’ll carry on," said Giggs to the Daily Star, "But if any of those things change, I’ll have to consider when I retire and it will be sooner rather than later."

The champions already have a replacement for Giggs in place in the shape of Portuguese youngster Nani but the United veteran admitted he was not worried about his future. He said:

"I’m relaxed about my future and I’ve got this year left on my contract."

The Welshman also admitted that he was looking to follow former United team mates such as Steve Bruce, Roy Keane, Mark Hughes and Paul Ince into management when he finally hangs up his boots.

"I think working under the manager here is the best schooling there is and you can see that by the managers in the Premier League," said Giggs before adding, "Coaching would be an option and it is a natural progression for a lot of footballers. There are a lot of different roads that footballers can follow after they stop playing."

Yet despite hinting at a management role in the future, Giggs admitted he hadn’t made his mind up just yet. He concluded:

"I just want to be prepared for when I finish because, if I do decide to go into coaching or management, I want to make sure I’ve got my qualifications and the necessary coaching badges."

Giggs has been at Old Trafford since 1990 and has won 10 Premier League titles, 2 Champions Leagues and 4 FA Cups with the club. He also holds the club record for appearances having surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton’s previous record of 758 in last seaons's Champions League final.

Manchester United and Chelsea went toe-to-toe in one of the better games this season - United’s width and pace gave them an obvious advantage, but Chelsea were able to match them with their physical approach, discipline and control of the midfield.

If Chelsea and played with Robben and Cole from the start, you never know what direction the game would have taken - United could have had more space to attack, but they would have been under the cosh as well.

Good comeback by Chelsea - they took the second half just as United took the first one. This title race will go the the distance, and United will be hoping Arsenal can take a few points off Chelsea and help them build a lead before the two sides meet again at Stamford Bridge.

So there I was trumpeting our new defensive stoicism, and what happens? Carnage. Still, it wasn't just me, Margy said prematch that it would be a tight game with just one or two goals in it. Even the best laid plans, ad all that.

People are all ready dubbing this match Quorn II. Up against an inept ref, the crowd in full voice, a stirring performance on the pitch, but despite a breath-taking fight back from 4-1 down with ten minutes to go, we couldn't quite find the vital equalising goal. Should we have had a penalty in injury time? Possibly. But despite this magic of the cup nonsense that gets force-fed to us by the FA's marketing team, we couldn't quite stumble over the line. If the game had been another five minutes longer, would it have made the difference? Well, there's no point thinking like that, as it wasn't.

Five or so games in to the seaosn and we're non the wiser as to how it's all going to pan out. I kind of like that. Every game could end in glory, or glorious failure. But still, that doesn't really matter, does it? The fact we're here at all is cause for celebration enough.

Just back from Bedford, and as the title says I'm gutted.

And you know it is not the money, it is not the potential of a match against AFC Wimbledon - it is simply losing a football match, one in which we have played our opposition off the park - for the second game running - and yet can't score a decisive goal.

Losing on penalties obviously hurts. That said, I am proud of our players tonight, they played their hearts out and they will feel as bad as any supporter tonight. It is important that they react in the right way and take it out on Hendon on Saturday.

I realised a long time ago no team has a divine right to win any football match. Whether you are better or not. We do not budget for cup success - it is a bonus - albeit a bonus you are desperately keen to get.

We all know what we need, and where we are lacking. It is easy to say bring a striker in, but it is another thing bringing someone in who will improve us on a wage we can afford. Those strikers that are available are either available for silly money or are no better than what we have. We won't give up though.

I'm gutted, I'm sure we all are - but there is always another day in football, and we have to make sure that the next day is ours.

FC Basel kept their 100% home record of the season intact with a comfortable 2-0 win over basement b

FC Basel kept their 100% home record of the season intact with a comfortable 2-0 win over basement boys FC Luzern on Saturday. Beni Huggel opened the scoring in the first half, tapping home the rebound after his penalty was saved and Scott Chipperfield finished the game off late in the second half. It was obvious to see why the visitors are struggling this season as they gave little going forward despite much pre-season optimism. "Viele Spieler, Keine Mannschaft" read a banner in the away end: "Many players, no team" summoned up their supporters' frustration although credit where it's due they were the loudest away fans to visit St Jakob Park this season.

So Basel remain five points clear at the top of the Swiss Super League. FC Zürich are in second place following their 7-1 demolition of FC Vaduz in Liechtenstein, all the game's goals coming in the second half. A mixed week in Zurich for Mario Mutsch, after being in the Luxembourg team that won their first World Cup qualifier since 1972 against Switzerland, he was sent off on his return to the Letzigrund on Sunday. However, his FC Aarau team mates were able to hang on to a 0-0 draw against Grasshoppers to keep them in third place in the table.

In England, Bishop's Stortford lost two goalkeepers (one to injury and one to a sending off) but could still hold Welsh visitors Newport County to a 1-1 draw at Woodside Park. Blues' goal came from ex-Wycombe FA Cup hero Roy Essandoh.

Speaking of the FA Cup, Stortford have drawn Wingate & Finchley at home in the Second Qualifying Round. The game takes place on Saturday 27 September. This is a decent draw on paper! However, many fans will not need reminding of our 1999 clash in the same competition. After leading 1-0 at Woodside Park and not looking in much trouble, goalkeeper Jason White dropped a cross on to the foot of a Wingate striker and off we went for a replay. In the rematch four days later, White was dropped for debutant Richard Day, son of West Ham legend Mervyn. But Day was to have a shocker and Stortford crashed out by three goals to two. Wingate's Jewish roots meant they used to be strictly amateur. Certainly judging by some of their current squad I don't know if that is still the case, but nevertheless Blues should make their home advantage tell and make progress in the competition. Let's hope so!

It's Swiss Cup action on Saturday as FC Basel visit FC Schötz, a village in Canton Luzern with, according to Wikipedia, the somewhat spooky population of 3,333. They play in 1. Liga Gruppe 2 of the Swiss system, which is the third tier where it is regionalised and they currently sit in 12th place of the 16 teams, 7 points from the top team, a certain FC Basel (their under 21s/reserves).

In the meantime, this evening sees the start of some Mickey Mouse competition known as the Champions League as FC Basel welcome Shakhtar Donetsk to St Jakob Park. The Rotblau's home form is exceptional and they need a decent start if they are to make any impact on their group. They have had some injuries to key players lately, but their Ukrainian guests have made a lacklustre start in their defence of their championship as they currently lie in 11th place with just one win in their first seven matches. We just hope that their struggling away form continues tonight!

Who?

Nantwich Town. Founded in 1884 they pissed about for seventy odd years until entering the inaugral FA Youth Cup in 1952. In the second round they were drawn against a Manchester United side that featured the likes of Duncan Edwards, David Pegg and Albert Scanlon, and they were soundly beaten, errr, 23-0.

Nantwich then returned to anonymity, doing nothing of note for fifty odd years, until drawing FC United of Manchester in the quarter finals of the Copa del Presidente.

What happened?

They thrashed us. 5-1. But sadly for them, with the score at 4-1 with a couple of minutes to go, they brought on a young sub whose registration wasn't in order. Despite protestations from our club, who seemed desperate not to win this trophy, saying that the substitution had no effect whatsoever on the game, the LMC threw Nantwich out of the tournament, and it was us poor bastards who had to go to Goole in the semis instead.

Previous meeting?

We've only met competitively once, in that Copa Del Presidente match. But we played them in preseason and won 3-0. Which is worth fuck all, as it goes. EDIT - As Reddish Hugh so kindly points out down below, we met three times previous to the Copa Del Presidente match, twice in the NWCL div 1, and once in the NWCL Challenge Cup, recording two wins and a draw in the process. What makes this mistake far more unforgiveable than my Nicky Santoro/Tommy De Vito, Casino/Goodfellas confusion in the 'Pugilism Round-up' post is the fact that I was at two of those games. Whoops.

Recent Form?

Nantwich site 8th in the table, with 12 points. They come in to the game off the back of a 1-1 home draw against big spending abominations Leigh Genesis. They've drawn their last three games, but haven't lost since their first game of the season.

Important things to remember?

This is the FA Cup, people. THE FUCKING FA CUP. It is permissible to be as giddy as you like. What is not permissible is the small town, no mark tradition of balloons, curly wigs, and enough tin foil to wrap up warm all the participants of the Great Manchester Run.

And finally...

Mark Hughes may like to think that his Manchester City side’s clash with Chelsea later on Saturday takes star billing in this weekend’s Premier League fixture list, but some 45,000 fans inside Anfield - plus, no doubt, a global TV audience of millions - will beg to differ when Liverpool and Manchester United lock horns again in a lunch-time showdown that will inevitably offer clues about this season‘s title race.

The ‘Clash of the Cash’ at Eastlands in the early evening will be a fascinating encounter for all sports of reasons, but few would accept that a meeting between the North-West’s two red-clad armies is no longer the main event. And while City and Chelsea may boss the richest sugar-daddies in the League, neither Liverpool nor United can be accused of penny-pinching, having this summer alone sunk more than £50 million between them into parting Tottenham from their strike-force.

United‘s deadline-day swoop for Dimitar Berbatov followed Liverpool‘s earlier capture of the Bulgarian‘s erstwhile scoring partner at White Hart Lane, Robbie Keane. Typically, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson sought to lob a psychological doubt into the Liverpool camp by questioning the high price Rafa Benitez was prepared to pay for Keane, a player whose value he has previously implied is somewhat inflated. Fergie’s mischief-making with the press is unlikely to cut much ice at Anfield, where the only sensible response is to ram his words down his throat on the pitch, though that has proved to be easier said than done in recent seasons.

That’s underlined by the fact that United are chasing a sixth successive Premier League victory over their Merseyside rivals, and their third in a row at Anfield. Indeed, Liverpool have suffered more Premier League defeats (18), dropped more points (68) and conceded more goals (48) to Manchester United than to any other club.

Those statistics make painful reading for anyone associated with Liverpool, and one can only imagine what the ghosts of Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley have made of the last 18 seasons. Eighteen, of course, is a highly evocative number in the context of battles between these two giants, separated by 33 miles of East Lancs Road or, if you prefer, M62 motorway.

For while Liverpool can still proudly boast more top-flight English titles - 18 - than any other club, they haven’t added to their haul since 1990. And with consecutive triumphs in the last two seasons, United have closed to within one title of their bitter rivals. When you consider that, at the time Kenny Dalglish’s Reds lifted the club’s 18th title in 1990, United’s tally was a modest seven, the seismic nature of the power-shift in Lancashire can be graphically understood. If United successfully defend their title again this season, they will not only claim an unprecedented second hat-trick of championships, but also equal Liverpool’s record total of titles. That is a prospect almost too awful to contemplate for many Reds fans. Never has Liverpool’s quest for that elusive next title been more urgent.

The good news for Liverpool is that they can go three points clear at the top of the table - for two hours at least - if they can achieve their tenth successive home league victory. To do so at United’s expense would be sweet indeed. United are down in ninth at the moment, partly because they’ve played a game fewer than all except Fulham, their clash wityh the Cottagers having been postponed while they went to Monaco for their ill-fated Super Cup defeat by Zenit St Petersburg.

But United were the only opponents who left Anfield with all three points last season - and Ferguson boasts an unbeaten record against Benitez of seven wins and one draw. Rafa’s one success was in an FA Cup fifth round tie in February 2006.

The context for this match is that both sides have been without most of their squads for ten days because of the international break - and that both will be seeking the boost to morale of a win to carry them into their first Champions League group matches next week.

Inevitably in the build-up to such a big game there have been plenty of comments, and some verbal sniping, from both camps. As noted, Fergie has queried the wisdom of Liverpool’s purchase of Robbie Keane, the Irishman shrugging off the slight by insisting football is a game of opinions - and adding that in his, John O’Shea should start every game for United. Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa, reflecting on the bitter disappointment of last season’s home defeat by United, claimed that the game is worth much more than three points.

"If we beat Manchester United at home, we will have 10 points and much more confidence, but everyone will also be very, very happy."

His team-mate Fabio Aurelio (famous among other things for the fact that his surname uses every available vowel), chipped in with:

"We need to try and change the history. In recent years, it has been difficult against them, but we have a great opportunity to change that on Saturday."

Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano, who recklessly got himself sent off during last season’s showdown between the teams at Old Trafford, reckons:

"It’s a match we need to win if we want to compete for the title. We can do that and push for honours. The fans deserve it."

The trick, of course, is walking the walk as well as talking the talk, as Reds defender Jamie Carragher knows only too well. He admits United have been better than Liverpool in recent derbies, and told BBC Radio Merseyside:

"I'm not a great believer in being lucky or unlucky. I'm a big believer in 'you get what you deserve'.

"United over the last few years have probably edged it with us and small details in football make a difference. That's why they've been better than us and that's something we need to liven up."

Meanwhile, from Old Trafford, there have been some bullish noises too, including former United defender Gary Pallister saying Liverpool will again fail to contest the title this season. He insists the Reds cannot sustain a challenge over the course of the whole season. He even suggests that things could quickly go pear-shaped for Benitez if he a loser again at Anfield.

"I can't see them challenging this year. I thought they might put together a sustained challenge last year and they didn't manage to do so. I don't feel as though they can this year either," he told the Daily Star. "Under Benitez they've been playing for fourth spot. That's not good enough for Liverpool fans. They expect to be up there fighting for league championships - and that hasn't happened. It would have a big effect on their season if they lose. If they lose badly it would be even more damaging. To lose at home to one of your main rivals is a huge blow."

The current United players have been fairly muted about Liverpool. Berbatov has been insisting he’s not lazy; Ryan Giggs has been predicting the Bulgarian will be an instant success for United; and Wayne Rooney has been talking more about resurgent England than the Premiership this week, having ended his 11-month goal drought for the Three Lions with an impressive performance.

But the other significant off-stage noise surrounding this gamer could well come from Liverpool fans planning to protest against the clubs two American owners, George Gillett and Tom Hicks. Will that strike a chord among United fans who wanted nothing to do with the Glazer-buy-out of their club? It should do, but parochial enmity could well mean United fans mocking rather than sympathising with their Scouse rivals.

Liverpool have lost one of their last 16 games in all competitions - a 2-3 reverse at Stamford Bridge at the hands of Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final second leg. They are unbeaten in 10 Premier League matches, of which they’ve won seven and drawn three. Ironically, their last League defeat was a 3-0 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford in March. And their last home defeat was also by United nine months ago. That 1-0 defeat, inflicted by a Carlos Tevez goal, was Liverpool’s only loss at Anfield in their last 24. But they’ve not not beaten a fellow 'Big Four' club in six attempts. This season, the Reds have beaten Sunderland away, Middlesbrough at home and drawn with Aston Villa away in the League, while squeezing through in extra-time against Standard Liege in a Champions League qualifier to secure entry to the lucrative group stage.

Manchester United’s last outing was that 2-1 defeat by Zenit St Petersburg in the UEFA Super Cup on 29th August. They’ve played only two Premier League fixtures to date, a 1-1 home draw against Newcastle United and a 1-0 win at Fratton Park against Portsmouth. They’ve won 10, drawn three and lost one of their last 14 Premier League games, collecting 10 points from the last 12 on offer since Chelsea beat the 2-1 away on 26th April. That was United’s first reverse in their last eight games against fellow 'Big Four' clubs.

Liverpool

Benitez was given a major boost today when two of his key players, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, were both declared fit to face United.

Gerrard missed England's 4-1 win in Croatia on Wednesday after undergoing a minor groin operation, and Torres has recovered from a hamstring tear, so both stars are included in Rafa’s squad after successfully completing Friday’s light training session.

"They are both much better," said Benitez. "They came through a full training session this morning. It's important for us to have these two players of quality who can change a game. I'm not surprised they are available because the medical staff have done a good job and the players have been working really hard with the physios to get fit."

Albert Riera is in line to make his Liverpool debut after joining the club from Espanyol on transfer deadline day. But Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva will miss the game after a long-haul flight back to Merseyside from international duty in South America. And both Sami Hyypia and Philipp Degen could miss out with hamstring and groin injuries, respectively.

Squad: Reina, Cavalieri, Dossena, Hyypia, Keane, Gerrard, Torres, Aurelio, Alonso, Benayoun, Arbeloa, Agger, Kuyt, Babel, Mascherano, Carragher, Ngog, Plessis, El Zhar, Skrtel, Riera.

Manchester UnitedThe club’s expensive transfer deadline-day recruit, Dimitar Berbatov, will almost certainly make his debut for the club, despite his fitness levels having been questioned by United’s coaching staff following his arrival from Tottenham.

Ferguson had doubts about the fitness of three potentially key men, but has been boosted by the prospect of having the trio back in contention for United’s first Premier League game in almost three weeks.

Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick all now look likely to be fit and available to face Liverpool. Ferdinand missed England's 2-0 victory over Andorra on Saturday because of neck and back injuries, but recovered to play his part in the Three Lions’ resounding 4-1 thrashing of Croatia in Zagreb last night.

Giggs, 34, had been suffering with a hamstring problem but could be involved if he comes through a late fitness test. And Carrick is now expected to be available following an ankle injury.

But Cristiano Ronaldo and Owen Hargreaves are still undergoing treatment.

Squad: Van der Sar, Neville, Evra, Ferdinand, Brown, Anderson, Berbatov, Rooney, Giggs, Park, Vidic, Carrick, Nani, Scholes, R. Da Silva, O’Shea, Evans, Fletcher, Tevez, Kuszczak.

All eyes will inevitably be on former Tottenham strike partners Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov, now on opposite sides and keen to prove they were worth their respective big fees. Keane has appeared over-anxious so far for the Reds, so a more measure approach to this titanic struggle could pay dividends for him. Trying too hard is not an accusation Berbatov has often had directed at him, but he show more than his usual economy of movement oh his debut for United. Like Keane on moving to Anfield, Berba described his switch to Old Trafford as a ’dream’ (cue yawns). It may well be a dream move for Wayne Rooney, whose game has cried out for some time for the sort of vision, touch and guile that Berbatov can provide in the form of telling assists. On the other hand, Jamie Carragher will be at his most dogged and determined in trying to turn the tide in these North-West derbies, and will neither ask nor give a quarter to either United front man.

Recent history points to United maintaining their hex on Liverpool, but then neither side have found anything like approaching top gear so far this season. This is the just the type of game to sort the men from the boys, the serious contenders from the mere hopefuls, though at this stage of the campaign no outcome will be decisive - and you’d still expect both sides to be in contention next April when the season moves towards its climax.

Their recent dominance over Liverpool means United may turn up at Anfield expecting to win, which could suit Liverpool. If United do win, they will have to halt a run: Liverpool have won their last nine home league games and are unbeaten at Anfield in the league this calendar year. Perhaps surprisingly, too, since February the Reds have been the best team in the Premier League with 13 wins, four draws and one defeat from 18 games. Meanwhile United have won only one of their four games so far this season during the regulation 90 minutes. And the last time Liverpool endured an eight-match winless streak against United in the league (1996-2000), they endede the sequence in the ninth meeting by winning 1-0 (and going on to do the double over United that season).

It’s also true that in none of the last eight clashes between these two sides have both teams got on the score-sheet - but that could change tomorrow with a scoring draw.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Now to do it with the Arsenal."][/caption]

The new season has begun and yet there has been much talk about the "glory years" of the first half of the decade. Many fans have eagerly waited for four years now for Arsenal to grab another league title but despite coming close last term, titles still elude our young squad. With so much talk about the success of past teams and the apparent lack thereof with the current side, it begs a question worth asking: What is success for a club like Arsenal? Will any trophy do? Must we win the Premier League or the Champions League to consider the season a success?

I think success for Arsenal this term can be defined in broader terms than solely winning a trophy, because as Spurs showed us last season there is more to football then just grabbing any piece of silverware. For Arsenal to be considered successful this term the team must simply show improvement. By that I mean we do not need to necessarily win the league or the Champions League but we need to progress in both competitions. Reaching the Champion's league Semi Finals and securing second in the league would certainly be an improvement from last season. The FA and Carling Cups are also important competitions, in their own way, in which we need to show improvement as well.

Winning either of the trophies would be a huge step forward insofar as breeding a winning mentality within such a young squad. For such a young side, there are stepping-stones toward success. Small victories must be won and heartbreaking defeats must be felt before the biggest goals can be conquered. Last season was a very big leap forward along that path and if one is to be realistic, patience and progress will and should be the name of the game again this season.

With such a young and relatively inexperienced squad we need to redefine what it means for this team to be considered successful. The current batch of players are not the Invincibles or either of the double-winning sides. They are their own team with their own identity who will, if given time and space, mature into winners of numerous trophies. Until that time comes though the squad needs to be given room to grow. and mature as a unit Could Arsenal win the title this season? Theoretically, yes, but in reality things would have to fall together perfectly because of the minute margin of error that will likely be allowed.

Would not winning the league this season make Arsenal unsuccessful? Not necessarily. Success for Arsenal should not only be defined in terms of two competitions. We must remember the youthfulness of the squad which made great gains in the last campaign and now has added experience and maturity. Progress is the key. Should Arsenal make progress in both major competitions and not win, it would be the last year this would be possible as they would be as close as you could to winning without actually doing it. As Wenger himself said over the summer... winning the Carling Cup and finishing eleventh is hardly what many would consider a successful campaign; even those who hold that "trophies are all that matter."
