Mediante un sencillo clic en el navegador el usuario podrá ser invisible, esta es la realidad la próxima versión de Internet Explorer.

Microsoft envió dos solicitudes de patente de las tecnologías Cleartracks y Inprivate, que procuran que el usuario pueda navegar por Internet sin dejar rastros en el computador local.

La versión normal de Internet Explorer registra toda la información, como por ejemplo los sitios Web visitados por el usuario, las direcciones y 'cookies'.

Si el usuario consiente, Internet Explorer también almacena nombres de login y códigos de acceso a servicios cerrados.

La función de "modo privado" ya existe en otros navegadores como Apple Safari. Según se indica, las futuras versiones de Firefox también incorporarán una función similar.

Il prossimo Internet Explorer, la versione 8, di cui è già possibile provare la Beta 2, fra le varie novità, alcune delle quali sono già presenti in Firefox e altri browser, integrerà la funzione "inPrivate" (questa sì una vera novità). inPrivate permetterà di "nascondere" le proprie abitudini di navigazione ai siti web, che raccolgono informazioni per visualizzare, durante la navigazione, pubblicità mirata e in target con l'utente. I maligni dicono che sia una mossa atta a contrastare Google, che riceve dagli ads (AdSense e quant'altro) una grandissima fetta dei suoi ricavi. (fonte)

Personalmente, utilizzando Firefox in accoppiata con l'estensione AdBlock Plus, la pubblicità  (intesa come banner, flash ads, etc.) non so quasi cosa sia da 3 o 4 anni a questa parte, se non di più. Rimane solo quella poco invasiva, che spesso sfugge anche ai miei occhi, quale è appunto quella di AdSense. Fra l'altro se è mirata è ancora meno fastidiosa.

Inoltre, secondo me sono vere due cose:

1- Gran parte dei servizi gratuiti offerti sul web si regge sulla raccolta pubblicitaria, quindi tagliare la pubblicità significa forse tagliare quei servizi o renderli meno gratuiti; tuttavia...

2- Un giorno bisognerà pur trovare un nuovo modello di business che sostiuisca l'ormai collaudato e consolidato "non paghi, ma ti becchi la pubblicità".

August 28, 2008 (Computerworld) Microsoft Corp. yesterday warned users of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) that they won't be able to uninstall either the service pack or Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) under some circumstances.

The warning was reminiscent of one Microsoft made in May, when Windows XP SP3 had just been made available for downloading. At the time, the company told users they wouldn't be able to downgrade from IE7 to the older IE6 browser without uninstalling the service pack.

In a post to the IE blog today, Jane Maliouta, a Microsoft program manager, spelled out the newest situation, which affects users who downloaded and installed IE8 Beta 1 prior to updating Windows XP to SP3. If those users then upgrade IE8 to Beta 2, which Microsoft unveiled today, they will be stuck with both IE8 and Windows XP SP3.
A warning dialog will appear to alert users. "If you chose to continue, Windows XP SP3 and IE8 Beta 2 will become permanent," Maliouta said. "You will still be able to upgrade to later IE8 builds as they become available, but you won't be able to uninstall them."

She recommended that users instead first uninstall Windows XP SP3, then uninstall IE8 Beta 1; they should then reinstall XP SP3 and follow that by installing IE8 Beta 2.

It's unclear how many users the warning is aimed at. Although users running Windows XP and IE8 Beta 1 could manually download and install Service Pack 3 from Microsoft's site, the company set its Windows Update service so that it didn't offer SP3 to systems with IE8 Beta 1.

Windows XP users who do have the first beta already on their machines will be offered the update to Beta 2 via Windows Update if they have Automatic Updates enabled, Maliouta continued. "A prompt in your Windows task bar will alert you when IE8 Beta 2 is ready for installation," she said.

Windows Vista users, however, will not see IE8 Beta 2 in Windows Update because update apparently cannot sniff out instances of IE8 Beta 1 and uninstall them automatically. Instead, users must remove Beta 1 manually, said Maliouta.

Several additional updates are required before installing IE8 Beta 2 on Vista, including one that, if omitted, blocks its installation entirely. That fix, a revised version of a Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) prerequisite that earlier this year sent machines into an endless series of reboots, is also necessary for IE8 Beta 2; users with SP1 will, of course, already have it in place, but those running pre-SP1 versions of Vista must still install it.

Microsoft also spelled out a long list of IE8 Beta 2 known issues and compatibility problems in release notes it posted on its support site Wednesday.

Ironically, of the nine applications called out as incompatible with the new IE8, the only two that will lock up and crash are Microsoft's.

Visual Studio .Net Version 7, said Microsoft, will crash on a PC that also contains IE8 Beta 2. "No workaround is currently available," Microsoft said in the release notes.

The other Microsoft incompatible application is Windows Live Mail, formerly called Windows Live Desktop, and the desktop mail client meant to replace Outlook Express and Windows Mail. "If you install Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, Windows Live Mail will crash when you create or reply to an e-mail message," Microsoft warned.

The IE team at Microsoft has released the 2nd beta Internet Explorer 8. Contrary to the first beta, which was aimed at developers, this one one is aimed at normal people like you and me. The list of new features and changes is decent, all focused around three themes (marketing alert): "We focused our work around three themes: everyday browsing (the things that real people do all the time), safety (the term most people use for what we've called 'trustworthy' in previous posts), and the platform (the focus of Beta 1, how developers around the world will build the next billion web pages and the next waves of great services)."Go get it.

Esta mañana la página web de Microsoft sobre hardware revelaba que, próximamente, la empresa de Redmond iba a lanzar un nuevo ratón, que haría que nos olvidáramos del láser . Su presentación no estaba prevista hasta el próximo 9 de septiembre, pero ya se han desvelado algunas de sus características.

El ratón se llamará Microsoft Explorer Mini Mouse y utiliza una tecnología que han bautizado como Blue Track y que deja de lado los tradicionales sensores ópticos y los basados en láser, utilizando un método que aumenta el número de superficies sobre las que se puede usar este.

Enfocado a su uso en portátiles por su reducido tamaño, el Microsoft Explorer Mini Mouse funciona sobre casi cualquier tipo de superficie, incluyendo madera, granito y moqueta, otorgando además una mayor precisión.

Para conseguirlo, usa un LED azul junto a una lente gran angular, el sistema que se conoce como Blue Track. Habrá que probarlo para ver si realmente su funcionamiento es tan bueno como afirman, aunque teniendo experiencia previa con los ratones de Microsoft es más que probable que así sea.

Lo único que no me gusta de él es que utilice un receptor externo en lugar de Bluetooth, lo que facilitaría su conexión. Por contra, este tipo de conector, que se guarda bajo el ratón, permite desactivar este cuando no está en uso, ahorrando batería sin prácticamente tener que pensar en ello.

Now it's one thing to demand that libraries keep up with technology, but it's another to ask our patrons to do the same, and we have had quite a few complaints because of this.  III clients are libraries, and despite the fact that the catalog is a product designed for the patrons, they are a step removed from the catalog's designers, and I doubt their voices are ever really heard except for when it's second hand.

It's rough because we should be teaching our patrons a bit of computer know how as part of our jobs (in this instance, start using Firefox), but we can't expect everyone to have the ability to keep current.

While Beta 1 was just for Developers. This second Beta of Internet Explorer 8 is more of a day-to day browsing version then a Developer Version.

Other then that little info that most of you guys won’t care. Here is the main stuff, Internet Explorer 8 basically gets a updated Makeover.

BASIC USABILITY

Every reviewer who looks at the new Smart Address Bar will no doubt compare it to the Awesome Bar in Firefox 3. And indeed, there’s a superficial similarity. As you begin typing in the Address bar, both browsers try to guess where you want to go, based on where you’ve previously been. The Firefox list starts with entries from your browsing history and then adds items from the Bookmarks folder. IE8’s Smart
Address list is more nuanced, displaying autocomplete suggestions, history items, and saved Favorites in lists that can be collapsed or expanded with a click.

One nice touch: Any entry that appears in the Smart Address Bar list can be deleted with a single click, making it easy to remove mistyped addresses and stale Favorites on the fly.

Tabbed browsing, a staple of other web browsers for years, made its belated appearance in IE7. In IE8, the tabbed browsing feature set is fully fleshed out, with menus and keyboard shortcuts you can use to duplicate a current tab (complete with its browsing history) or reopen a previously closed tab. The most interesting addition, one I haven’t seen in a competing browser, is the ability to automatically group tabs by their source. If you open a search page and then use the right-click menu to open new pages from the search results list, all pages share the same color code on the tab. Open a new page from a bookmark or by typing in the Address bar, and any pages you open from links on that page get a different color code. For devoted web searchers, it’s a great way to find specific pages even when dozens of tabs are open.

The trouble with tabbed browsing is that a single buggy page can wipe out all current tabs. Firefox has included crash recovery as a basic feature for several versions, but IE users previously had to graft this feature on with add-ons like IE7 Pro. No more. IE8 adds crash recovery as a core feature. The implementation is especially interesting in fact, because of another feature, called Tab Isolation. Because browser tabs (and the main browser window) run in separate processes, one crashed page has no effect on other tabs.

Although I wasn’t able to perform any detailed benchmarking, it appears that IE8 uses fewer resources than IE7 as well. I’ll perform some more controlled experiments later to see whether that initial observation is accurate.

SMARTER SEARCH

Because this is a beta release, I wasn’t able to exhaustively benchmark page-loading times. But I can say categorically that a handful of new search features saved me precious minutes while I was working on this post. Three in particular are worth calling out here.

First, the basic search box in the upper right corner of the browser window has been given some new smarts. As with earlier IE versions, you can add search providers to the default list provided my Microsoft. The icon at the left of the search box indicates the current default search provider, but a new row of icons appears beneath your entry when you start typing in the search box. That makes it easy to quickly choose a different search provider on the fly; previously, you had to choose a different provider from the drop-down list.

Even more interesting and useful are the additional search results that appear below the search box as you type. Items from your browsing history appear here by default, limited to five entries unless you choose to click the expand button. For search providers that support visual search, you can actually see thumbnail results on the ply, without having to run the search or open a new page. Both Wikipedia and Amazon currently support this feature, which cuts a significant amount of wasted time out of the search process.

And then there’s inline search, a staple of other browsers (another feature available in IE7 only with the help of add-ons). The IE8 implementation of the inline search bar appears below the tab list and works exactly as you’d expect.

ACCELERATORS AND SLICES

For years, Microsoft has been trying to make it easier to perform search-related tasks directly from a web page. (Remember Smart Tags, from IE4?) A new feature in IE8, called Accelerators, might actually deliver this promise. Accelerators are basically widgets that work on a web page selection or the contents of the Clipboard. The default selection, naturally, is weighted in favor of Microsoft’s Live services, but its major competitors and partners, including Google, Yahoo, Amazon, and eBay, are also on the initial list. I was able to quickly replace the Live Maps Accelerator with Google Maps and add an eBay option that finds auction items matching a highlighted term.

PRIVACY AND SECURITY

New in this build are a pair of privacy features designed to make it easier for you to maintain some level of privacy, both on your local computer and on the Internet:

• InPrivate Browsing (more popularly known as “porn mode”) allows you to open a new browsing session where no record is kept of your travels. IE’s history and cache (Temporary Internet Files) remain untouched, cookies are stored in memory only, and no record is kept of form data or username/password combinations. When you exit the browser, all traces of the session vanish.
• InPrivate Blocking is designed to eliminate information transfer between web pages you visit and third-party sites that provide content to those pages. The obvious target is large advertising networks that build detailed profiles of your browsing history from your history with dozens or hundreds of sites. The design is confusing, and I’ll need to spend more time with it before I can testify with confidence that it performs properly.

InPrivate browsing worked exactly as promised. To start, open a new tab and click the InPrivate Browsing link, or press Ctrl+Shift+P. In either case, your session opens in a new window, completely isolated from any regular browsing that you might be doing. Parents will be relieved to note that the feature can be disabled completely (and in fact is disabled by default if Parental Controls are turned on).

COMPATIBILITY

For the web developer community, the biggest news in IE8 is its promise of strict adherence to Internet standards. That’s both a blessing and a curse, it turns out, as some sites that were hand-coded to work with nonstandard behaviors in older IE versions have problems rendering in the default, standards-compliant IE8.

In the first beta, the alternative was unpleasant: switch to IE7 mode and restart the browser. IE8 implements a much more elegant solution, with a compatibility button at the right side of the address bar. The button is actually a toggle, and it only appears when a possible incompatibility is present. Clicking the Compatibility mode refreshes the page and displays a one-time balloon tip alerting you that the page is now in compatibility mode. Doing so also adds the domain to a list of sites that always use Compatibility mode. If you prefer to sidestep the headaches completely, you can set a global option to display all sites in Compatibility mode.

One final addition that webmasters will appreciate is a full-fledged developers toolkit that can be used to poke around in the code and design behind any page. Press F12 to see this tool as a free-standing window, or dock it below the current page. Similar tools were available as custom downloads from Microsoft for previous IE versions; this one is built into the browser from the get-go and will presumably be available in the final release as well.

All in all, this is an impressive beta release.

Do you ever get this error message when you try to Autologin to a website?

"To use the Passpack It! button, you must connect to this website through your Passpack Password Manager"

Usually that problem presents itself when the browser does not accept third party cookies. Passpack can only work if your browser accepts cookies. To make sure the browser accepts them, you can follow these simple steps:

Follow these steps for Internet Explorer:

1. Select Tools from the browser bar menu
2. Click on Internet Options
3. Click on the Privacy Tab
4. Click on Advanced Options
5. Select both "Allow cookies from sites" and "Allow third party cookies"
6. Press OK

Follow these steps for Firefox:

1. Select Edit from the browser bar menu
2. Click on Preferences
3. Select the Privacy Tab
4. Select both "Accept cookies from sites" and "Accept third party cookies"
5. Press OK

In Firefox 3, you also have to put "passpack.com" in the list of allowed exceptions. You can choose to do this directly, without allowing cookies from all sites and it should work the same.

That should solve the issue once and for all.

Flashing Javascript Message

On the Passpack login page, does an error about Javascript flash for a second on the page, then the login fields show up?

That is OK, it could just depend on a slow connection or PC. As long as the login fields show up then everything is fine, it just takes a second or two more for them to appear.

If the error stays and does not disappear, then you will have to activate Javascript in that browser.

Follow these steps in your IE6 browser:

1. Select Tools from the browser menu bar
2. Click Internet Options
3. Click the Security tab.
4. Click Custom and Settings
5. Scroll down to "Active Scripting" and click on enable.
6. Click OK etc.

Follow these steps in Internet Explorer 7:

1. Select Tools from the browser menu bar
2. Click Internet Options
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Scroll down to "Java (Sun)" and select the corresponding box.
6. Click OK.

Follow these steps in Firefox:

1. Select Edit from the browser menu bar
2. Click on Options
3. Click on the Content tab
4. Select the "Activate Javascript" box.
5. Click OK.

(I'm not sure about this but you might want to restart your browser to make sure the changes take effect)

Internet Explorer 6 (Sigh)

Even after turning on Javascript, does the login page show a white box under the black bar?

Unfortunately this is an issue that we still haven't been able to duplicate, and have no way of fixing at the moment. The best thing to do is to update browser, or switch to our beloved Firefox (hehe).

Firefox 1.5 (Goodbye)

I said "beloved Firefox," and yet we had to leave behind the good old 1.5. In fact autologin no longer runs on Firefox 1.5...sorry.

Firefox 3 (and Firebug)

The new baby in the Mozilla family has a few issues we need to work through, one of which I addressed earlier - having to set "passpack.com" in the list of trusted sites from which to accept cookies in order for Autologin to work. Another little problem is that Passpack will run slowly in Firefox 3 when the extension "Firebug" is installed and running. This is nothing major, Passpack still works properly and no errors occur, it just works a little slower than normal.
