[caption id="attachment_42" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption="Cecilie store drøm gik i opfyldelse.

This is a great tour - this is a great place - they were all here - it started here - right here!!!

This is a great tour - this is a great place - they were all here - it started here - right here!!!!!

They knew it was great - they played it on the radio the next night in Memphis - it was huge.

Sam Phillips sold Elvis to RCA for

1. $30,000 dollars (tour guide said)

2. $35,000 dollars (book written 2004)

3. $40,000 dollars plus $5000 to Elvis (internet site)

Take your pick but it wasn't a fortune for sure. But Sam was broke and the money kept him going. He went on to record this man.

And he helped bring in lots of money and, of course, along came this man -

And, last but not least, this singer -

One day in 1956, Elvis was in Memphis so he stopped by Sun Records to say hello. Johnny Cash dropped in to pick up a pay check. Roy and Jerry were there working.

They were all right here!!! Right in this building!! Elvis was commenting on a singer in Las Vegas who was doing a parody of one of his hits. Elvis liked what Jackie Wilson was doing with his song. Jackie Wilson went on to have a great career. What great music was to come (not everyone agreed it was great but..)!!! What fun!!!

Now we also note that the civil rights movement was moving at this same time.

On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Rose Parks refused to obey bus driver James Blake's order that she give up her seat to make room for a white passenger. Her action was not the first its kind, but unlike previous individual actions of civil disobedience it sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. People refused to ride buses for a full year. This was a real hardship on many people. It took incredible courage to carry out this boycott. This movement turned Parks into an international icon of resistance to racial segregation and launched boycott leader Martin Luther King, Jr. to national prominence in the civil rights movement. Parks eventually received honors ranging from the 1979 Spingarn Medal to a posthumous statue in the United States Capitol's National Statuary Hall. (from Wikipedia) We move on to the Civil Rights Museum (the Lorraine Motel) next.

Elvis spent the whole week watching Emma Lee write a chapter about the DESERT. Specifically, Israel and Egypt in the mid 1950s. They went to the NYPL yesterday and read "Rivers in the Desert," a history of the Negev desert settlements, from cover to cover. It was really neat, Elvis especially liked the idea of the wadi.

It's hot enough to be the desert in Brooklyn this week. HEAT WAVE. Good thing that Elvis and Emma Lee are off to go camping in the Rockaways. Wish them luck!

Growing up in North Braddock exposed me to r&b music that would not have happened had we stayed

Growing up in North Braddock exposed me to r&b music that would not have happened had we stayed in the predominantly white Mount Pleasant. My older sister, Diane, and younger brother, Dan, embraced this music more quickly than I did. But it did not take long for me to prefer the quartet sounds of the Temptations, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Impressions, Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and Gladys Knight & the Pips over the Fab Four or other British rock sounds. As I see it, the struggles of the white working-class found expression in the music of a people from a greater struggle. And the roots of this music goes back to the spirituals and field songs of the slaves. As the migration north began to Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis, Detroit, Pittsburgh, etc.., it morphed into blues and jazz. The groans and grittiness of Blind Willie Johnson captures the early transformation from spirituals and field songs to the beginning of the blues/jazz/gospel sound. It reminds me of a new testament scripture in Romans 8:26 that says “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.”

As a white kid, growing up somewhat poor in a working-class neighborhood, I gradually resonated with the music. It captured for me the grittiness of my life, my family’s life. As we watched our father become an alcoholic with violent rages, music comforted us in ways that nothing else could. And our family was embedded in this larger community where life was hard. There were no guarantees that things would ever get easier, in the family or out. So, music was more than the proverbial soundtrack everyone seems to reference these days. It was a healthy outlet. The struggle might find tearful expression of the love ballads or a song with social commentary like the Temptations “Poppa Was a Rolling Stone.” Our mom, would prance around our house dancing to Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.” In some of their good moments, my 6’5” father would slow dance with my 5’2” mom to the Platters. What a sight that was! I think my grandfather referred to a comic strip that encapsulated the size differential. Grandpap would say about my parents when we arrived to visit, “Well, there’s Mutt & Jeff.”

Along with this music was the music of the church. The music of the pentecostal and sanctified churches became rock n’ roll. It’s fascinating to watch people’s disdain for the emotionalism of the “holy rollers,” but embrace the soulfulness of a Janis Joplin. Most people are totally ignorant of the connection of the early rock & roll sound of Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and even Elvis to the exhuberant and expressive music from the community churches. This bias against emotional fervor in worship continues.

Thank God for Mrs. Page, our music teacher, in the Jones Avenue middle school and North Braddock Scott high school. She exposed us to many of the spirituals as part of the chorus and choir. When I went away to college, the preference for r&b and gospel remained, but it took another leap when we moved to southern California so I could pursue my doctoral studies. We began attending a little mom & pop church that had a choir and choir director that were unbelievable. Terry Marden and his wife Shelva were music ministers at Crossroads Community Church in Westminster, California. I was a part of the choir on and off for the four years we attended that church (1987-1991). The Mardens did all sorts of gospel genre, but my favorite was black gospel. We actually participated in various competitions throughout southern California. So, we were a multi-ethnic black gospel choir. We had ethnic Romanians who could not speak English that recently immigrated, Asian-Americans, Mexican-Americans, African-Americans and all sorts of whites along the various class and regional strata. We performed in churches at Compton and Watts in Southcentral Los Angeles (now called South Los Angeles) and ended up competing as part of a fundraiser for the Orange County Urban League at the Crystal Cathedral. These performances were not just singing. Symmetrical and asymmetrical choreography was an important part of the worship expression. Gradually, the portion of the choir that had little rhythm began to sway and clap off beat and move as one with those who could. Now of course there were exceptions, you know. There are one or two people in any choir, especially including so many white members that just aren’t going to get it. So, you work around them. The Mardens might move them to a less obvious location in the choir, but they always kept them. We did three songs at the Crystal Cathedral. I'm trying to find the date, but I think it was in 1988. We did renditions of the Walter Hawkins great “When the Battle's Over” with Gigi Fiero doing the solo, “Let Us Not Be Weary in Well Doing” with Keith ???? doing the tenor solo and a finale that included the Douglas Miller “Do Not Pass Me By” with Terry Marden doing his solo. (The links here are the originals. But we sounded just as good!) Unfortunately, Terry passed away several years ago.

It was during this time that I began collecting music of the great gospel choirs and soloists. I actually can remember the moves to some of the songs and hope to find a similar choir to fit into someday. If not, you can bet where you’ll find me in heaven. I’m sure there’ll be high church music from the Episcopalians and Catholics. There’ll be the Protestant hymns of the Methodists. And I may stop and listen and try to sing a few notes in each, but I will not tarry too long before I make my way to the gospel sounds and choreography of the Pentecostals. So, Terry, please make room for me. I’m coming to worship.

Pandora radio is a great place to listen to various gospel choirs and artists. I got the application through Facebook. If you need any suggestions on where to start or expand, feel free to ask. This ol’ dumb white guy knows a thing or two at this point. Thank God for the contribution of African-American culture to our lives! One of my all time favorites is by the Mississippi Mass Choir, "I'm Not Tired Yet."

Now here's a question for everyone? I know I am not the only ol' white guy with this passion. Are these multi-ethnic choirs out there doing black gospel music or was this entirely a unique experience? Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

The School of Manliness - Part II
Manly men.

The School of Manliness - Part II
Manly men.

Did you know that Johnny cash once fought an emu? Well you do now, and for story telling purposes, I’m going to say he was drunk, on drugs, and still kicked it’s fucking ass, and then barbequed it later that day.

This makes Johnny Cash fucking manly.

Why?

He kicked the ass of one of the most useless damned animals on the planet, and he probably had some good country tunes about his dog dying, and his woman havin’ no soul, to back his ass kicking, that combined with the fact he ate it afterwards makes him fucking hard as nails, because he completely disregarded all the bullshit about healthy eating by eating a whole emu.

The only way Johnny Cash could have been more manly would be if he recorded a live album in a prison and did a fuck load of drugs...

Oh wait, he did do that.

Chuck Norris, Chuck has kicked more asses than any other man in the world. Ok, so he’s been turned into a bit of a fad recently, which does take man points of him. But let’s face it, without men like Chuck Norris, the world would be pretty damn shit, we’d all be running around like Ghandi, crying about how un-cool violence is. (For the record violence is fucking awesome, and Ghandi was a queer. Real men gouge out eyes for fun.)

Aron Ralston is probably one of the last manly men alive today…An American mountain climber who became famous in 2003 when he was forced to cut off his lower right arm with a dull knife in order to free himself after his arm became trapped by a boulder. How many times have you cut off a limb?

If the answer is zero, you’re probably not manly enough to even be allowed to read about this man. Aron Ralston could kick your ass, even with one arm, he’s that manly. Aron Ralston is now a predominantly non profit public speaker, because real men don’t charge for their services of being fucking hard as nails.

The most manly thing about Ralston?

He still climbs mountains and kicks their asses on a daily basis. In reality, God was jealous of Ralston's unending purity of manhood, and took his right arm away from him, in a fit of rage.

Elvis Presley, he died of a drug overdose on a toilet, fat and bloated. And that's how a fucking man dies.

Finally, Clint Eastwood.... This is a man who eats women for breakfast, shoots more Mexicans than the American boarder patrol, and rapes faces with nothing more than a hat, spurs and a revolver. This, is, manly. His daily routine consists of getting up, (he doesn't wake up because he doesn't sleep) eating women for breakfast, shooting Mexicans, ordering women about, riding a horse bareback while shooting Mexicans, saving a small village, finding gold and giving it to the poor, then shooting the poor for stealing a loaf of bread even though he just gave them gold, then shooting Mexicans, having one good shit, having one good wank, then going to sit in his home to drink whiskey and smoke cigarettes in the fucking dark.

Clint + Eastwood = More manly than anything on this fucking Earth.

Note how none of these men cry... Ever.

True, fucking, story.

Annars händer mycket lite här i Norrtan. men its a damn god place to live anyway. ;)

Was sehen wir da?

Elvis saw the NY Philharmonic last night in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. He and Emma Lee rode bicylces, and then ate olive bread and listened to Finlandia. It was wonderful. They were really close to staying at home, but were sure glad they didn't.

Before that, Elvis had a busy week of travel. He spent a couple days in the Hamptons, in the house where Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe spent one unsuccessful summer. Morning runs to the beach, and dinner of grilled halibut in an architecturally notable house. Elvis loves early Richard Meier. And peaches on beaches.

Elvis also went to New Haven to hang out with Emma Lee's college roommates. The crew (Fitz the Yorkipoo in tow) went to Guillford to look at water and talk about their lives since the last time they saw each other, which was easter of 2007. It looks pretty there. One of Emma Lee's old roommates is studying to be a gyno, so the King of Rock and Roll learned a whole lot about what could go wrong with his female reproductive system.

It's really easy to know if you'll be a fan of this book. Did you enjoy the X-Files? Hellboy? Anything to do with the Bigfoot legend or other creatures that go bump in the night? If so, you will most likely enjoy this book!

Proof follows the story of John "Proof" Prufrock, who just so happens to be Bigfoot. The series is essentially X-Files, but you get Proof in place of Mulder. No worries though, they introduce a character that seems to have a similar character style as Mulder by the name of Elvis. ;)

In the first issue Ginger has just joined The Lodge and is assigned to work with Proof as they investigate a reported sighting of El Chupacabra!

The first graphic novel is out and it collects the first 5 issues for a mere $9.99! You can't really beat that with Marvel and DC throwing $15-$25 graphic novels out there every week.

All in all, the book is a little cliche but I firmly believe that while not a book for everyone it will develop a strong loyal fan base and I plan to be part of it!

"...a wise man said to me- look on up..." det är precis någonstans över "look".

We did stay at this hotel and it was fun - they played Elvis movies around the clock. Free. We watched some we had never heard of before being in Memphis. I saw "Love Me Tender" in the 50's but never cared for it. I enjoyed "It happened at the World's Fair" because it showed Seattle and we lived there. We watched part of "Kid Galahad" and part of "Roustabout" and all of "Jailhouse Rock."

His movies employed a lot of people, large casts which included lots of females - "Girls, Girls,Girls" and "Harum Scarum," roles that were not especially great female roles but the ladies were in the movies and popular Elvis movies. Some years ago I read in a "movie" magazine, a critical look at movies magazine and the role of females was reviewed this way - ask three questions about the movie you are watching -

1. Are there more than one female characters featured in the movie?

2. If there are two or more, do they speak to each other?

3. If they speak to each other, do they speak about anything other than men?

I used this criteria for awhile but it was somewhat depressing. Now I realize love stories are popular and I like good love stories so there will be always be women talking about men and the other way around but most dramatic movies and good comedies do not seem to have good female lead roles.

Elvis did his best - there were lots of characters, good and bad - he did seem to get in too many fights and the fight scenes were, well 60's fight scenes and the kissing was practically chaste by today's standards, which was not all that objectionalble.

So the Heartbreak was a nice place to stay. I told Janice that it really should be at the end of Lonely Street and the last day we were there, as we were pulling out of the long hotel property driveway and getting ready to turn onto Elvis Presley Boulevard, there it was - a street sign and it read - "Lonely Street!!!"

If you're parking in the U.K., you might just hear a celebrity's voice reminding you to secure your belongings thanks to Talking Parking Meters. Celebrity voice impersonator Stuart Smith of Celebrity Voices Ltd (no affiliation with Celebrity Voices) provides the voices of celebrities such as David Beckham, Sir Michael Caine, and Simon Cowell in an effort to reduce the amount of thefts from parked vehicles.

Here's how it works:

Park your car

Walk to the meter to take a ticket

Hear to a celebrity's voice remind you to secure your vehicle

Lock you car and be on your way!

What a great idea.

I know I've mentioned before that Teno is a class-A banana waster. Sometimes he'll eat an entire bunch in two days and sometimes the whole bunch will rot. Tony likes bananas but he's been on an apple bender lately and I find the texture of bananas repulsive so I won't eat them. So this week end we had four bananas turning black on the kitchen counter, I tweaked a favorite banana bread recipe to add some peanut butter and there you have it- peanut butter banana bread. We ate it too fast to do anything creative with it- but there's a diner here called Salt & Pepper that makes awesome banana bread French toast and this would make for extra fat ass banana bread French toast.

You will need:

1 & 3/4 cups flour*

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup shortening

3/4 cup peanut butter, crunchy or smooth

2/3 cup granulated sugar

2 eggs, slightly beaten

1 cup mashed bananas

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup chocolate chips

*I used whole wheat flour, but all purpose will work as well.
Then you:
In a small bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, soda, and salt. In a medium bowl, cream shortening and peanut butter, then beat in sugar, vanilla and eggs. Alternately add dry ingredients and bananas, stirring with a wooden spoon. Pour batter into well-greased and floured loaf pan and bake at 350° for 1 hour**.

**Or less, keep an eye on it.

So yeah, slice it up and use it as the bread for French toast or drizzle honey over it and eat it straight up. (It would be extra Elvisy with bacon.)

Cut from the same cloth as my earlier effort, the most recent was a grey issue, shaped almost exactly like one leg of a pair of bell-bottomed trousers. This was long and wide, and reminded me of my penis. Swiftly chasing him out was a mossy green lump which appeared to shimmer. I suspect these fabulous colours are a result of something I smoked over the weekend, which turned me into a cartoon for a few minutes and made me think I was dead. The grey bum gunge reminded me of Elvis, and like him, I was sorry to see it go.

Last week I asked some DPS readers who follow this blog via Twitter (our account is here) to share some of their photography tips with us.

The catch was that they had to do it in 140 characters or less (the limit that Twitter allows per message). Here’s a collection of 20 of their photography tips:

“I would recommend any serious photographer a Tripod. It’s indispensable for any photography & most if your hands won’t stay still” - maniar

“don’t spend your time looking at the lcd screen…you end up missing fantastic moments. The pictures will still be there later!” - burks

“Shoot in RAW mode if your camera has it. Offers so many more opportunities for editing than shooting in JPEG” - PattyHankins

“don’t just stand there. Instead of moving the camera, move yourself…” - XmasB

“Always remove the lens cover.” - fireeducator

“Get closer to the object.” - Celebtur

“Expensive equipment don’t make great photos. Great photographers do.” - quicklunarcop

“Fill the Frame” - ebradlee10

“shoot the magic hours(!!); remember the exposure triangle; look for a new/unique angle on your subject. :-)” - laepelba

“Keep taking photos, look at your photos, then take more photos. Learn from your mistakes and don’t be afraid to experiment.” - Elvis Kovacic

“You can’t take a photo without a camera so always carry one - even if you don’t get a great shot you had a chance at getting it.” - HelenBradley

“Learn to expose and light correctly the first time using JPEG - at the highest quality, saves time and work later. no RAW needed” - woodmike

“For portraits: fill the frame with your subject!” - onedadslife

“Relax, take your time and get the shot you want.” - mvern78

“just get out there & shoot…learn your camera =)” - docm2b

“it’s the archer, not the arrow.” - Supermassive

“keep your batteries charged because you never know when you might want to use the camera to get that special shot” - StuartL

“assuming digital, you can never take enough shots” - d0rk4l

“Shoot, shoot, shoot. (wish I followed this more often)” - Kellygrape

“Understand the basic rules of composition, get a feel for them, apply them regularly - and break them occasionally!” - John1954Moi

It’s easy to believe that The Beatles were crappy. They made sugary pop songs & sappy romantic ballads. They weren’t just a part of the mainstream charts, they defined its existence after Elvis Presley became fat and people realized Little Richard was black.

So yeah, The Beatles exemplified pop music. Bad haircuts, sometimes cornier-than-hell lyrics and repetitive melodies. That was Beatles in a nutshell.

Thankfully, these blokes spoofed themselves seriously enough to make some kick-ass songs. Dreary pop ballads such as I Want To Hold Your Hand & All You Need Is Love helped a few guys get laid and made the others fall asleep. But whenever they decided to get in touch with their edgier side, songs such as the Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Eleanor Rigby and A Day In The Life Of…proved that Beatles could brilliantly mangle pop and force it to copulate with rock and roll.

The Fab Four certainly weren’t as good as people thought they were. Greatest band ever, my left foot. But after listening to gems like Free As A Bird, One Is The Loneliest Number and Across The Universe, an undeniable fact stands out and screams at me - The Beatles were bigger than Jesus and definitely better than Oasis.

Who are the most influential bands and artists in the history of rock? Well, start with The Beatles

Who are the most influential bands and artists in the history of rock? Well, start with The Beatles and Elvis, I guess, and for good reason. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Stones, of course, The Who and David Bowie. The big names. All of them signed their names on our culture with a fat permanent marker, and in doing so insured that just about all future artists would have to navigate their legacies in one way or another.

The funny thing, though, is just how influential some far, far lesser known artists became. Many people have heard of Velvet Underground, although comparatively few have actually listened to them, but if you factor VU's overwhelming influence out of our collective cultural history would we have had Bauhaus, Echo & the Bunnymen, Lenny Kravitz, Sonic Youth, Jesus & Mary Chain (and subsequently Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), Galaxie 500 (and the army of bands that followed their lead) and REM?

How about Big Star? I'd wager that not many contemporary listeners have even heard the name, but their influence on a generation of guitar pop musicians is just about impossible to calculate. Put it this way - if you hopped in a time machine, went back to Memphis in the early '50s and erased Alex Chilton from the ranks of the living, when you got back to 2008 almost nothing would sound the way it did before you left.

Influence is a funny thing. Huge artists can leave almost no footprint for future acts to follow and relatively obscure bands can change the audial landscape forever. Which leads me to another band that a lot of people these days don't know: Joy Division. Sure, everybody's heard New Order, which in 1987 released Substance, arguably the greatest dance album ever. But before New Order was Joy Division, which featured the guys in New Order plus their creative leader, Ian Curtis. JD was interested in expanding the sound of punk, and it embraced a range of dark, melancholy tones that served to comment on the bleakness of European industrial life in the '70s.

In May of 1980 Curtis committed suicide. There's no way of knowing how big Joy Division might have been commercially, and until the last couple of years I couldn't have imagined how great their artistic influence would be. But all of a sudden, over 25 years later, there's been an explosion of new acts that are clearly beholden to Curtis' brooding legacy of despair. Interpol and The Killers are easily the best of the lot (The Killers cover "Shadowplay" live and on their recent B-Sides collection), and if they were the only examples we could dismiss the Joy Division Effect easily enough. But the truth is that we're seeing a significant movement within "indie" rock that simply wouldn't exist without the influence of band that barely lived long enough to get off the ground and that died before Reagan was elected.

So today, in our inaugural TunesDay, we pay tribute to all those bands out there - the JDs, the VUs, and the Big Stars - whose vision exerted an impact on the world of music that far exceeded their individual commercial successes. Here's Joy Division with their video for "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

Here Interpol performs "Slow Hands."

The Killers' reverence for JD is evident in this homage.

She Wants Revenge is a lot of fun, but at times they're almost a tribute band.

Then there's Editors, whose An End Has A Start was one of my Gold Award CDs for last year.

And The Mary Onettes...

And finally, "1981" by The Flaws.

We'll conclude with a Rock 101 exam question: Enduring artistic influence is better than commerical success or critical acclaim. Discuss.

On the 1st of July a leading Sydney newspaper ran an article written about an individual named Elvis Kovacic. Obviously, not one to let the truth stand in the way of a good story this journalist decided to target Elvis Kovacic. Mr Kovacic has been targetted in this article and a number of falsities were reported in what appears an attempt to destroy the reputation of a person choosing to defend his right to plead his innocence. This damaging and defamatory article states that Elvis Kovacic has been found guilty by the local court of NSW for two charges relating to the use of carriage service to menace, harras and offend and an intimidation charge. To this day, no such decision has been handed down by the Local Court but this did not stop such an article being published. A reckless disregard for truth and honesty in reporting and one-sided reporting that appears aimed at discrediting this young individual, his career, and personal life.

But this is not the only non-truth reported by this journalist. The article comments on personal relationships, the nature of those relationships and their status. It does not cover facts in a fair and balanced manner but has a heavy one sided bias. There is a huge sensationalist approach in the way this article is written that brings no balance to the true nature of this case. This is one of the worst cases of journalistic flair written to try sell a newspaper as it effects lives of innocent people.

It appears that Elvis Kovacic would have a clear and justifiable case for pursuing legal action against the publication of this article but what chance to save his reputation and repair the damage done by reckless untrue reporting. The damage has clearly been done.

This website has been developed to defend persons like Elvis Kovacic that have been wronged by those that abuse their rights and power to pick on those much smaller and unlikely to defend themselves.

The less articles such as this one in the papers the better. There are always two sides to every story, the problem is articles are only written by one journalist. http://www.elviskovacic.com.au/
