Innsbruck to bez wątpienia jedna z zimowych stolic Europy. Właśnie tutaj w 1964 roku i 12 lat później zorganizowano Igrzyska Olimpijskie. W mieście warto zobaczyć zamek cesarski Hofburg. Obiekt został zbudowany w XIV wieku i pełnił funkcję rezydencyjną. Innsbruck to wspaniała baza wypadowa w góry.

Also wieder in die Autos und Sergio hinter her gefahren.

I

Ich will wieder dahin! je früher, desto besser.

Eins davon waren The Killers.

The RIOT guys and I had a fuckin' blast and the Ruta Maya folk even got to hear sexy soneeter Jessica Piazza, and whale-man David Jewell himself. Beautiful, beautiful evening. I think Marty got a few vid clips of the event, so I'll be posting those too soon's I can. David Bates and Marty Lloyd do it up right, folks. If you're a poet craving a mic, (perhaps staggering out of Exposé on a Tuesday evening after visiting your ladies) and looking for your poetry fix, head down to Ruta Maya's open mic.

We're looking forward to our upcoming readers: Joe Ahearn and Jill Alexander Essbaum. I'll be posting more features and news soon.

RIOT Ink also has BIG plans for the Fall, so definitely stayed tuned. (Subscribe to this site, or shoot me a note at because.words@gmail.com and I'll get you on our mailing list. Don't worry, I only send out really, really important and relevant emails (like, where da poetry be at?) and would never trade or sell or do anything inappropriate with you email address.

Last month one of the more fascinating forgotten shows of the fifties made its home video debut. Timeless Media's new box set of fifteen episodes of Brenner marks the first opportunity that TV fans, and even veteran collectors, have had to sample this series since its original network run nearly fifty years ago. I've written about a few figures connected tangentially to Brenner - Frank Lewin, the composer who supervised the music and probably composed the terrific, minimalist jazz theme, and Sydney Pollack, a bit player visible on the periphery of several episodes as young plainclothes cop - but even I had never been able to take a close look at the show until this DVD collection went into production.

Brenner's historical significance derives mainly from its pedigree. Its executive producer was Herbert Brodkin, a former set designer who became perhaps the last of the important producers of quality dramas in the waning days of live television. Taking the reigns of NBC's Alcoa Hour/Goodyear Playhouse and then CBS's Studio One and Playhouse 90 during their later seasons, Brodkin produced key live dramas including Horton Foote's "The Traveling Lady" and "Tomorrow," Rod Serling's autobiographical "The Velvet Alley," and the original "Judgment at Nuremberg" - the one during which the sponsor, the American Gas Company, insisted that all references to the gas chambers be deleted. Brodkin's second act came in 1961, when he launched The Defenders, a Reginald Rose creation that raked in a roomful of Emmys and became the most important TV drama of the early sixties. Brodkin's other sixties shows - The Nurses, For the People, Espionage, and the cult failure Coronet Blue - were less successful but helped to define his reputation as a standard-bearer of uncompromising quality as television became more and more controversial. It was a reputation that continued into the seventies as Brodkin, like most of the talented people in television, shifted his attention to movies of the week and miniseries. Pueblo, The Missiles of October, and Holocaust (also recently arrived on DVD) were all Brodkin efforts.

Brenner, made in 1959, was a transitional project for Brodkin. It was his first independent production, his first series to be shot on film, and (aside from his first producing assignment, NBC's live Charlie Wild, Private Detective) his initial concession to the reality that programs with running characters were quickly supplanting the anthology drama. Like The Defenders and The Nurses, Brenner was based on a one-shot anthology show from Brodkin's catalog, a January 1959 Playhouse 90 entitled "The Blue Men." Intriguingly, Alvin Boretz, who wrote "The Blue Men," is not credited as the creator of Brenner, although he did contribute scripts to the series.

Edward Binns and James Broderick as the Brenners

So just what is the show about, exactly? It's a modest police drama that centers on not one but two characters who give their names to the series' title: Roy Brenner (Edward Binns), a no-nonsense, seen-it-all plainclothes NYPD lieutenant, and his son Ernie (James Broderick), a rookie beat cop. Viewers familiar with the first season of the better-known Naked City and the underappreciated Decoy (a syndicated show with the sexy Beverly Garland as a tough, beautiful pre-feminist policewoman) will find that Brenner shares much of its flavor, its taut little stories that blend character drama with action (and not always smoothly), with those shows. The primary difference is that, while Brenner too was shot on location in New York City, it takes little advantage of the panorama of awesome cityscapes that give Naked City and Decoy their visual richness. Like The Defenders and The Nurses, Brenner plays out mainly on interior sets.

That may be disappointing to some who hope to get a time-capsule snapshot of Manhattan circa 1959; certainly I had to adjust my expectations a bit when I began studying the Brodkin shows after considerable exposure to the location-rich East Side/West Side and Naked City. But Brenner has other virtues, in particular some conceptual subtleties that you won't find in Decoy or the half-hour Naked Citys.

For one thing, although Brenner never quite develops into a serialized story, it is a bildungsroman of sorts that places a great deal of emphasis on Ernie's growth as a cop. The episode "Departmental Trial" makes a point of telling us that Ernie is in his first year on the force, and others chart the lessons he learns from his mistakes, and his acceptance or rejection of the examples set by various older cops.

And the emphasis there is on rejection, because of another unusual element of Brenner. Roy Brenner's assignment within the police department is on the Confidential Squad, or what we'd now call "internal affairs": he investigates allegations of corruption among other cops. Fully half the episodes in this DVD set focus on some allegation of police malfeasance. "Small Take" and "Thin Ice" are about beat cops accused of taking bribes or turning a blind eye to a gambling racket. "Monopoly on Fear" stars Milton Selzer as a plainclothesman charged with cowardice - he's six months away from retirement and starting to lose his nerve - and "Laney's Boy" deals with cops who cover up a punk teenager's petty crimes because his father is a beloved police sergeant.

Roy Brenner ends up exonerating as many police officers as he takes down. But viewed in total, Brenner projects an attitude that's almost perversely anti-police, even by the modern standards of something like the cynical The Shield. Though the execution is less forceful, it's this element that links Brenner most closely to the crusading social criticism undertaken in The Defenders and The Nurses. I have no idea if Brenner enjoyed police cooperation in its filming or not, but you have to imagine that if anyone from the NYPD ever paid attention to the scripts, they'd have gotten mightily steamed.

Brenner was produced by Arthur Lewis, a Broadway veteran who died two years ago. (Brodkin, essentially an impresario and still working simultaneously on Playhouse 90, received credit as executive producer.) Lewis went on to produce the first season of The Nurses, and so many of the same key talents behind that show were also the most prolific contributors to Brenner: the directors Gerald Mayer and Herman Hoffman, and writers like Boretz, George Bellak, and Art Wallace. You might call them Brodkin's "B team" - solid mid-level craftsmen from the pool of New York, live TV-trained talent, but not the superstars who would form the more exclusive creative staff of The Defenders.

A few big names did pass behind the cameras of Brenner. The great Ernest Kinoy wrote one episode ("Crime Wave," sadly not in the DVD set), and Peter Stone, a journeyman TV scribe before Charade made him famous, contributed several. Steven Gethers, later Emmy-nominated for his work on The Farmer's Daughter, wrote perhaps the most compelling episode in the DVD collection, "Crisis." It's a sensitive, almost entirely personal story in which Roy Brenner falls in love with a woman (Hildy Parks) who cannot come to terms with the element of danger in his job.

Gene Hackman as "Patrolman Claiborne"

Then, of course, there are the actors. As with any New York-based show of this era, one can have an enormous amount of fun trying to spot all the soon-to-be-famous young performers just launching their careers. George Maharis, Jerry Stiller, Al "Grandpa Munster" Lewis, Mitchell Ryan, and Clifton James all turn up in the episodes on the DVDs. The X-Files' Jerry Hardin has a role with no lines in "Departmental Trial," and Bruce Kirby appears without credit in "The Vigilantes." Brenner somehow had a special knack in casting the roster of patrolmen who have recurring roles in various episodes. Along with Sydney Pollack, Gene Hackman and Dick O'Neill were among this group. Oh, and there's one episode in which sixties leading lady Carol Rossen is visible as an uncredited, non-speaking featured extra. Can anyone spot her?

*

I've filed this piece in the "Corrections Department" section because Brenner has languished in such obscurity over the years that virtually nothing has been written about it - and much of what's out there is inaccurate. Most reference books describe Brenner as a father-and-son cop show - a reduction that makes it sound like some hoary Pat O'Brien melodrama from the thirties - without mentioning more substantive aspects of the premise (Ernie's inexperience; the "rat squad" angle). Every source I've come across, in print and on-line, contends that Brenner filmed an initial batch of episodes in 1959 and then briefly resumed production again in 1964 to create ten more episodes.

That's a highly unusual production history of which I'd always been skeptical - why would CBS choose to revive a failed, forgotten show, and why would Brodkin and the two stars participate, five years further on in their careers? The copyright dates on these episodes finally confirm my suspicion - that the entire Brenner series was created in 1959, and that the show's summer replacement run on CBS in 1964 was simply a burn-off of unaired segments.

Any reference you consult, apart from an exhaustive catalog compiled by the Museum of Broadcasting (now the Paley Center) for its 1985 Brodkin retrospective, will tell you that there are 25 Brenner episodes. Actually there are 26 - sort of. As was common at the time, Brodkin used the series' final production slot to film a "backdoor pilot" for a proposed spinoff called Charlie Paradise. (The episode itself is called "The Tragic Flute.") Just as Brenner emulated Naked City, Charlie Paradise was a pretty blatant attempt to join in on the wave of cool private eye actioners that followed upon the success of Peter Gunn and Richard Diamond, Private Detective. Charlie (Ron Randell) is the proprietor of an ultra-hip coffee house, a sort of godfather of Greenwich Village to whom Roy Brenner turns for help in navigating the wacky world of beatniks.

Fred Gwynne, Severn Darden, Gerald S. O'Loughlin, and Ron Randell in Charlie Paradise

Presumably, had the series sold, Charlie would've been an amateur sleuth along the lines of John Cassavetes' Johnny Staccato, and one imagines that the New York location shooting might have offered an authenticity exceeding that of any of the other "jazz-eye" shows. But "The Tragic Flute" is undistinguished; it tries for a light-hearted flavor that trades too heavily on the supposed exoticism of the beat world. (The writers were James Yaffe and Peter Stone, here more than on his other Brenners in the comic mode that won him the Oscar). Broderick doesn't appear in the segment at all, and Edward Binns looks exquisitely uncomfortable as he plays straight man to all the kooks (which include Roberts Blossom as a beat poet, and Fred Gwynne as a character named Frances X. Fish). Taken out of context Charlie Paradise is simply baffling, and it might have been wiser for Timeless to segregate it as a bonus feature on the DVDs.

As for those DVDs, the image quality is exceptional - far superior to the often battered, sixteen-millimeter derived copies of the early Universal shows (Arrest and Trial, Checkmate) that Timeless has been releasing lately. Unfortunately, I'm told that unless another print source is found, this will be a standalone "best-of" release. It would be wonderful to have the other eleven Brenners on DVD someday - but then, it would be even nicer if CBS/Paramount would open up its vaults and give us The Defenders, The Nurses, and Coronet Blue.

The bi-weekly Brenner is cancelled until further notice :(

Myself along with a few others can no longer make Tuesdays and recently theres been a lack of interest in it (only me, Izzy, Ked and Ami are guaranteed to turn up for it).

If more people start to show an interest we can work out a new day for it~

English Version:

Last week, I installed the new Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista .

Actually, so everything should be better (before I actually had no problems): faster acceleration, lower demand for memory, and many mistakes should be corrected. For me, it's the other way somehow.

* My Windows Update does not work anymore
* My Security Center is active, but somehow it doesn't work ... ???
* My sound card is no longer recognized 100%
* My burner spins and :-(
* Windows takes longer to boot up

Only the process of turning off is now faster. Otherwise, I was actually very pleased with Vista but as a Windows help with my problems, as always, of course, not help, I consider that if the entire Abi-stress is over, back to Windows XP Media Center Edition move. If the upcoming service pack 3 for Windows XP seems likely it is even better weden. Well, I will put it in mind.

Other opinions and suggestions of course welcome. Write a comment.

If I had to pick one of my favorite winter dishes…and by winter I mean that goofy season in St

If I had to pick one of my favorite winter dishes...and by winter I mean that goofy season in St. Louis falling in the months of February, March and the first part of April....I pick mushrooms with truffles. Yes, yes...truffles are spendy...but worth every shiny nickel. My two favorite truffle mushroom dishes are from right here in St. Louis. The first being at Moxy. Chef Brenner did this amazing starter with polenta, various types of mushrooms and truffles. Geez...it was good and rich enough to have as a main course. Sadly, I haven't seen it on the menu in a while. It was great with a glass of Malbec (or two). Triangles of grilled polenta made with a rich meaty mushroom stock covered in a fantastic mound of perfectly sauteed wild mushrooms spiked with truffle oil. Made for some good eats.

Last night, we didn't feel like cooking. And lucky for us our favorite restaurant is in walking distance...almost in our driveway. So, we braved the unploughed back alley of Benton Park and moseyed on over to Niche for dinner. We were the only ones in the joint. Lucky for us. (eventually 2 more tables arrived). Given the state of our fair city, servers were unable to make it in. Lo and behold, Brian the bartender. Brian stepped up to the plate and not only worked the bar but served all the tables...and he did it amazingly well!!! It was a great night to dine at Niche. Quiet, relaxed and terribly fun.

Simon had the tasting menu and I had the prie fixe. The chef's tasting menu is just too much for me on a Tuesday night. Si is a big boy and can handle it! We both started with the cauliflower soup-served two ways. I had the traditional soup, served with warm apples and walnuts. It had a deep earthy curry undertone. Rich and velvety. I could have just had that for dinner. Satiating and scrumptious. Simon was served the soup aerated with crispy bacon and apples. It was just as good. Anything with bacon, right?

I can go through the tasting menu, but I'm not. See Bill Burge's review at STLBites . Spot on as usual.

What I want to talk about was my dinner. The tarragon gnocchi with wild mushrooms, truffled, greens, parsnips and sweet potatoes. oh.my.god.

First off, if you have never had gnocchi at Niche, do your self a favor and go. The very first time I went to Niche was within the first few days Gerard opened the door. I hadn't even met Simon yet. I just finished a gut rehab at our Benton Park house and G had finished the restaurant. I remember being so excited when I went looking at the house, seeing the posted occupancy permit and liquor license in what is now Niche. I didn't know what or who was going in there at the time. All I knew is that having a restaurant/wine bar in my back yard was a plus...signed on the house that day. A dear friend and I stopped in for a light dinner. He had the gnocchi. He is just about a finicky as they come with regards to food. He knows what's good and what he likes. Niche gnocchi was put on that list that evening. Never had he tasted gnocchi so light and tender...full of flavor. Little puffs of amazing-ness.

Last night, I ordered the gnocchi thinking I would re-live that night. I didn't. What I was served was a gastronomic wonder in it's own right. (too strong of words???...nah) The gnocchi were made with a bit of chickpea flour and had a golden brown crust. They were studded with fragrant tarragon, served with a medley of wild mushrooms (morels, trumpets, oyster, hen of the woods were some I think i recognized in between shoveling it in), truffles and a rich truffled oil sauce. Jumbled up in the mix were some greens and tiny diced parsnips...maybe a turnip...I can't remember. All I know is that those gnocchi and mushrooms made the favorite dish list at Niche.

I ordered the chocolate cake with Tahitian vanilla ice cream and Simon got the coconut kulfi. Lucky for me Simon doesn't like tropical flavors and I do...so we did the old switch-a-roo and everyone went home happy.

I made a personal record today My previous record of EXP gained from a single Campaign Battle was 3

I made a personal record today :) My previous record of EXP gained from a single Campaign Battle was 3200 but I broke that by getting 3600 from a Pashhow Campaign. Spen (74 War) and Izzy (60 Sch) were with me got 1500 and 750 respectively from the same battle. Rdm really is the best job for getting EXP from the system. We can gain points for exp in all the fields, I also tanked mobs through that battle as Rdm/Whm. Sure Rdm/Nin would do better on the tanking front but Rdm/Whm can hold those mobs fine plus it doesn't cost anything, has Erase (which is a godsend against Quadov NMs who AoE knock back gravity), has -Na's and keeps me self dependent as I have Reraise. When tanking Divine Seal + Convert not only keep me going but keeps ze hate on me if some other fool tries to come and steal my exp *angry fist motion* The point is I <3 Campaign and Rdm lol.

One complaint is the faultly Mobs in Pashhow and the frickin' NPCs. The Npc's randomly charge out halfway accross the map to kill the mobs. Sonia ran and claimed Adamantking miles from the fort which pisses me off to no end xD they do this all the time at Pashhow. I'd always thought they followed player who were out to hold Mobs but she really did just run off.

Also the mobs are faulty, we were waitng 15/20 mins after the first wave for a 2nd one, eventually I ran to 1/2 down the map to see a Quadov NM stood still until he agro'd me, i ran for my life linking about 5 other quadov and dropped dead xD. He then headed towards the fort. I got up straight away and chased him, as soon as hit got to the fort 50 NPCs swarmed the NM, killing the it in 10 seconds, I shit you not. Its early days yet so I'm sure it'll be fixed.

Ooo Ooo, another tip is you can lock the bastard Quadov NMs that AoE Gravity+Knockback into just constantly Protecting themselves by dispelling them constantly lol, makes them allot easier to kill.

OTHER NEWS!!!!!!!!!!

Theres been two 40 cap Brenners in the LS. They're allot more hectic then the 30 cap we've been doing and very fun. Ive gone as both Rdm and dark, Rdm cant hold out but Drk/Whm is hella fun! Blink helps a suprising amout and diaga really screws people over.

I love this shot of me killing Maruk >=D The way he's kneeling down, falling to the ground with Livija stood staring while I drain the last bit of life from him. Seems like it has a deeper meaning xD

We've had a few brenners with 12 people and then they get down to about 6 of us as people have to go. Im really not sure which I prefer, 6 a side is so hectic and mad which makes it fun. However I like the 3 Vs 3 as it feels more personal and you can really analyse the other team.

I'm also gonna point out how insanely overpowered Sam is in 40 cap Brenner, freeking Seigan makes them untouchable. I'd never leveled Sam and i dont know much about it, but id always thought Diaga got rid of Thrid Eye/ Seigan but apparently not xD. We took subjobs off for the last round which totally screwed me over as Drk/Whm but Sam was still strong as ever >:| DAMN YOU TROOPER!

Look who should pop up two days ago...

Barthezz xD

He's back and transferred to hades :D As soon as he got on he was back to helping me which I feel bad about >.< We went to skill up in the Tree and I finally got 240 sword skill and this:

Then the next day he's on helping me camp Ose and get some WS points on it @_@!

We are at the Ose for frigging ages and didn't see it pop. I'm at 90/300 points from it though :D can't wait to get that WS! Also while there I treated myself and got me this:

yes, yes, its kinda late as I'm 75, but what the hey. At least it made up for not getting the Assault Jerkin.

Barthezz comming back makes me realise how little I accomplish in game without him >.>; My last major breakthrough was Rank 10 in Bastok and that was with his help. When he logged on I thinking 'hmm, I should really go to the AH and get some better gear xD' because nothing has changed since he left lol. In the end there wasn't really anything I could get except Wooden Gauntlets and l'll be fooked if im spending 700k on them. Oh well... I did plan to have Nin at 37 by now, but Ni has jumped from 270k to 350k just as I need to buy it. I saw it for 270k and thought, 'It'll fall in price.' -_-. I burnt the last of the seals I had with Lee and Spen on PP in the hopes of Ni but we didn't get anything useful at all.

CoPs being slowly going ahead. The Minotor fight was allot easier then I thought, Livija back-tanked making it easy as hell. Even getting there went very smooth ^^ We tried to farm a few subligars after but didn't have enough people.

Tonight is the first try of 2-5 @_@ wish us luck.

Leveled Cor and ranger with Livija and Gary.

Mills first meeting with Datsi :O Livijas 2nd char newly arrived from Shiva.

Red Mage Rules: We're the best at Campaign :o Keep getting assessed to rest the skill caps and you can max out exp :)

The day consisted of Meetin' Eatin' and Walkin' mainly :P So cool to meet you people!

A few random things that happened:

Cafe Nova, just.... o_o a scary place, as soon as I saw the 'please wait to be seated' in a cafe I knew this was gonna be weird lol well... i did insist on somewhere not gypsy i guess... xD

Trying to find zoobys or whatever that place was @_@ wondering around in a lobby of a hotel... we must'a looked dumb! ^^;

The madness of Trams o.o!

Wondering around trying to find where to go >_>; I took everyone across a field to a sports centre

A ... movie ... and then Burger King xD where we got into deep FFXI convo.
Pictures of the day are here courtesy of Kroe and Garcie.

Now we're gonna get started properly on the June/July Centre Parks trip so keep an eye on the forum for that!

Frank Lewin, the primary credited composer of incidental music for the landmark television dramas The Defenders and The Nurses, died of congestive heart failure on January 18.

The musical name typically associated with The Defenders is Leonard Rosenman, a distinguished young composer of film scores (East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause), whom producer Herbert Brodkin had hired to write a short fanfare that served as the opening title theme for The Defenders. But that was the extent of Rosenman's contribution; for the first season, The Defenders was underscored entirely with library music, which often gave this distinguished show the sound and feel of a cheap B movie.

Once The Defenders was a hit of sorts for CBS, Brodkin wisely opted to expand its music budget. He hired Lewin, who had been the music supervisor (i.e., the man who selected and positioned the stock music tracks) for Brenner, a half-hour cop show Brodkin had produced in 1959, to create original scores for every episode beginning with the third season. At the same time Lewin became the credited composer for The Nurses, the medical show that Brodkin was also producing for CBS.

The difference was immediate and palpable. Lewin proved to be a rich, innovative talent, and one evidently up to the task of crafting music for over sixty hours of television each year between 1963 and 1965. Undoubtedly some tracks were reused, but nearly every episode has a unique motif that relates to its subject matter. The Nurses episode "Gismo on the EEG," for instance, marked one of TV's earliest uses of electronic music to accompany its story of a tomboyish nurse who builds an important medical device in the hospital basement. For "The Leopard Killer," about an African chieftain stranded in the alienating modern world of an American hospital, Lewin wrote a percussion-driven score to suggest the sound of tribal drums.

(Lewin may also have been involved with both series as a composer or music supervisor prior to his initial credit on them in 1963. There are also no screen credits identifying the stirring orchestral theme to The Nurses or the jazzy, minimalist alternating solo timpani and sax riffs heard throughout Brenner and over its closing credits. I wonder if Lewin is responsible for those as well.)

Lewin taught music at Yale and Columbia for many years and composed scores for local theater productions and outdoor historical dramas. He evidently worked as a music editor or supervisor for other New York-based TV dramas in the '50s, and on a few movies (Splendor in the Grass, The Angel Levine), but his only important film credit as a composer was on Michael Roemer's The Plot Against Harry - a film made in 1969 but shelved for twenty years.

Lewin's website has a photo and a more detailed resume and biography.

UPDATE: TV music expert Jon Burlingame points out that ASCAP credits the main and end titles of The Nurses to Robert W. Stringer, who received screen credit as the show's music supervisor for the first season only. The score for "Night Shift," the pilot episode, was composed by Glenn Osser. So my speculation that Lewin might have been responsible for The Nurses theme was inaccurate. I do suspect that the Brenner motif I described was Lewin's work - either an original composition or a very skillful arrangement of existing cues - although I should add that what I called a "sax riff" may be a different woodwind which my very untrained ears can't identify.

UPDATE, 2/6/08: Members of Mr. Lewin's family have contacted me with a couple of corrections, and the text has been adjusted to reflect those. The Lewins also report that Frank did compose the Nurses main title theme - that he called it "his Tchaikovsky" because of its "sweeping, romantic character." Assuming that's true, it's interesting to speculate why Lewin never received credit for his work (as Leonard Rosenman did for his Defenders theme).
