For the longest time (9 years, to be exact), I had a song running through my head that I wasn’t sure even existed. I knew that the band was called “Forest For The Trees,” I knew that the song featured bagpipes, and I knew that the chorus included the lines “when I am dreaming, I don’t know if I’m asleep or if I’m awake; when I wake up, I don’t know if I’m truly awake, or if I’m still dreaming.” Other than that, I had no idea. I would often sing the chorus to friends or new acquaintances, in hopes that someone else would have ever heard the song and confirm for me its existence.

In time, I came to suspect that the song was merely something I had invented in my childhood dreams and it was a mistake for me to assume that anyone else had ever heard it. Just when I was ready to give up all hope of ever hearing the song again, save for in my head, another lyric came to me. “I’m the first person, you’re the second person, earlier today I was in the third person.” That’s when it hit me: I never would have written that. I would have written about “he” or “she” being in the third person.

Adding to the terrible confusion, Youtube searches of the words “forest for the trees” yielded no results. A Google search of the same words provided a few answers. I learned that the band Forest For The Trees did exist. I learned that in 1997, they had a song that made it to number 18 on the modern rock charts and got played on MTV. It was called “Dream.”

I became obsessed. Like Ponce De Leon searching out the Fountain of Youth, I searched out this song. I frequently looked through the local record stores, even asking the clerk at one to order the CD for me. He gave me the most incredulous look, assuring me that either the CD didn’t exist or that it wasn’t available from their supplier. After about a year on a feverish hunt, I decided that it just wasn’t to be. I had confirmation that I wasn’t crazy, but I would never hear that sweet, sweet bagpipe solo ever again.

On a whim (drunk), I searched Youtube again six months ago, and what should I find but the Dream music video. Hoorah! It was as good as I remembered, but hearing it again raised a lot of questions in my head. First, why did this song only make it to #18? In 1997, Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise’s “California” made it to number 1 on the same chart. What the fuck was that song? Does anyone remember that one? Second, why did Forest For The Trees only have one hit? Their sound was so original, so unlike the Third Eye Blind, Wallflowers, Sublime bullshit that was dominating the airwaves back then. So, what the fuck happened?

I hope Forest For The Trees is doing well today, but I fear for the worst. I fear that the drummer has locked himself in his library where he bottles his urine and watches films of airplanes on a 35 millimeter projector. I fear that the bagpipe player (the bagpipist? Bagpiper?) was killed by his girlfriend, whom he frequently emotionally abandoned, by suffocating him with a massive potato. I fear that the lead singer snuck backstage after a magic show and fell into the magician’s hat, which transported him to a magical land inhabited by walking, talking hats who are very, very fond of puns. Oh, lord, I hope they’re doing better than that.

I miss you, Forest For The Trees. Write another hit.

On Saturday we went to the Riverfront Irish Festival, in Akron, which boasts is the largest free Irish Festival in the midwest. Ok. Not sure that particular claim to fame is what drove us there but it was a nice perk.

A couple of years ago I went to an Irish Festival in Irvine, Ca that had sheephearing, celtic games, Irish food, clothes and plays. It was a lot of fun. They played to the history, tradition and Irish culture.

The Riverfront Irish festival, presented by the St. Brendan Division Of the Ancient Order of
Hibernians was a middle-aged drunk fest. It played to the Irish stereotype. Everyone had a guiness and the band on stage was playing Neil Diamond. Not sure if he's Irish but the over 40 crowd ranted and raved like it was 1974 all over again belting out Sweet Caroline. It was excellent people watching.

The one highlight was a band called Rathkelthair. It was a rock band centered around a bag pipe. This band actually had someone from Ireland in it (the drummer.). But the star was the bagpipe player, Neil Anderson, who just returned from active duty in Iraq. He played at least five different instruments and two of the flutes at once. It was incredible.

After their set we decided to leave. The drunk boomers and families left and the drunk college frat boys were rolling in. It was a good time to jet.

Still a fun night. We sampled some fine Irish cuisine, heard a rockin' bag pipe and found our families coat of arms.

For those who couldn't attend the Virginia Fallen Firefighters event and who missed the trophy presentation on Monday evening. Here are some photos of the trophy and images of the coins that all members who participated received. I have been thoroughly impress with the coins. (oooo shiny bright) After discussing them with on of the Emerald society pipers I found out they are called challenge coins and have a military origin. A few of our members that are former military still carry their coins with them for reasons I'll save for a newsletter article. Now with out any further ado here are the photos:

The First of May - the International Day of Workers for Everywhere but the U.S.

Yesterday was the first of May. In the United States, the day would have passed like any other Thu

Yesterday was the first of May. In the United States, the day would have passed like any other Thursday. I would have gone to school, taught my immigrant students English as a second language, and would have returned to my house to lesson plan and prepare for another day´s work. Here in Santiago, however, May 1 is an important holiday. Not only does it mark the Ascension of Christ - it also is the day to celebrate workers all around the world. All across Europe, this day is remembered, but here in Galicia El Dia de los Trabajadores is an important festival, all the more important now that immigrants have internationalized the Spanish workforce.

The narrow cobbled streets here in Santiago are teeming with people, but it is hard to pay them mind. Vendors are standing in their doorways, offering passersby free samples of the traditionaly Galician almond cookie. Gaelic bagpipe bands march through the streets, their beautiful music reverberating off the ancient facades of Santiago´s downtown. I am fortunate enough to witness a traditional Gallegos dance, where the men jig around women who balance a giant loaf of bread upon their heads. The symbolism for the working class is clearcut, yet hauntingly beautiful - it would do the United States well to have a dance on MTV celebrating life´s simple gifts of our daily bread and friendship.

Above the plaza, the park is full of people. Pulperias sell grilled octopus, churrerias hawk tasty churros in chocolate, and gitanos advertise their carnival rides to anyone who will listen. It is a veritable sea of people, a river of workers celebrating their collective productivity and diversity as they chomp on cotton candy and ride kiddie rides. Atop the ferris wheel, I view the entire 100,000 people of Santiago from a vantage point on par with the highest peak of the Saint James Cathedral. It is easy to be filled with awe when one stops to think about the magnitude of so many life-works going on right now, and I rededicate myself to advocating for the migrant workers who hope to contribute their life´s work to a new country.

The mass at La Cathedral de Apostolo Santiago de Compostelo is stunning. It is part holy, part bazaar. Hundreds and hundreds of people mill around the main wings of the church as the various priests conduct the mass. Dozens of confessional booths are set up for busy workers to confess on this rare weekday holiday. A red light above the booth intimates that a priest is ready and waiting to listen. The interior of the church is amazing. Gold, which must have taken thousands and thousands of workers´tithes to purchase, is shaped into the most impressive angels and saints and Saviors. Granite walls echo the message of the Father, and the massive double-breasted organ takes up two entire walls. When those pipes are filled with the liturgy, it is impossible to ignore the Spirit.

During the service, I meander behind the cantors. In the background of the priests, there is a passageway which crosses behind a figure of Jesus. In keeping with tradition, I give him a quick abrazo like so many millions before me. After this warm hug, I pass beneath the cathedral into the crypt where James the Apostle is believed to be buried. It is cold, stony, and I pray quickly before leaving.

For the communion prayer, the ancient priest invites several other priests to say prayers in their language. It is beautiful to hear bequests to God in Spanish, Gallegos, Italian, German, and French. The priest closes these prayers by stating that God knows the language of our hearts; every worker in the crowd nods with understanding at this. Watching the people take communion, I see pilgrims who have walked over 100 miles to finish here at the cathedral in Santiago. I see persons who are obviously staying in the finest hotels, and local workers who have not had a holiday in ages. I see devout women who remind me of my grandmothers, and proud fathers similar to my own.

The service finishes with a trademark tradition. As a traditional zither plays music, 5 priests maneuver a long rope which runs up to the very top of the cathedral´s spire. A holy incense box swings back and forth, gaining momentum like a kid arcing heavenward at the schoolyard. The aroma of prayer wafts over the crowd, all of whom snap pictures as if the incense container were a death-defying trapeze artist. Incense everywhere, all the workers looking up, music harmonizing to the sounds of people praying - every one of us is overwhelmed. Whether this is the last thing a peregrino pilgrim will see on their Camino de Santiago, or this is merely the capstone of the International Day of Workers, it is a memory which will always mark the first of May for me. How overwhelming, to think of workers the world over clinging to faith in order to derive meaning from each day´s labor. From Santiago to San Francisco, from the twin cities of Brownsville and Matamoros to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, my heart goes out to immigrants working thanklessly, yearning for recognition of their work and their lives, longing for basic rights and hope of citizenship. When next I celebrate the International Day of Workers, I pray that we all will have done something more for the voiceless workers of our world.

Dette er "The Gale", filmmusikken fra The last of the Mohicans.

Tjohei!

Ok, I'm suppose to talk more about Easter Sunday's performance. As you know, the 5 of us performed @ Barker, to collect money for BB week. As a member of BB, all of us should be asking people for donation for this time of the year. I remembered that when I was in secondary level, BB week used to be 2 weeks. Right now, BB Week is 1 month, I guess they should start thinking about changing the name of this donation drive.

As I was saying, Bin Soon prepared a box with a A4 size sign that wrote, "BB WEEK, pls donate generously, thanks.. =)" or something like that... When it's 10am, most of us was still saying should we do it?? I was quite reluctant because I am afraid that nobody will actually put money into the box, then it will be quite malu...

For the first 5 mins, there wasn't any donation. As I was into my second tune, a small kid (probably got instructions from his parents) put a few bucks into the box.. I was so happy.. soon after, all the money start coming in for the next 10 mins. There was quite a number of spectators watching in the canteen. I certainly hope that they had enjoyed the performance.

15 mins later, there wasn't any more donation coming in. By then we were also quite tired because we have been playing the full 15 mins with only few seconds of rest. At that point of time, those irritating BB boys start to stand in front of the box to count how much money was there. It was so irritating and certainly spoiling my business. If I find out that it was because of "you all" that affect my business, I will give you a "piece of my mind" man.

Nearing to 10.30am, people we know start to appear. And they did contribute some money to the box. I was glad that even after we stopped, Mr Loo asked for an encore.. haha.. never had this musician feeling before...

The 30 mins busking earned us a total of $144. Which is not really good for 5 of us, because each of us only get ard $30 worth of donation, but it was a great experience. I think we should be more well prepared next year and start going to all the churches to ask for BB week donation...

I have uploaded some tunes that we practiced the day before on youtube. They can be found in THEATER.

St. Patrick’s Day is nearly upon us, which means that the Dropkick Murphys will be working ove

St. Patrick's Day is nearly upon us, which means that the Dropkick Murphys will be working overtime to give everyone in Boston their share of punk bagpipe (not to be confused with drunk bagpipe, which my old rugby team was pretty familiar with.) Indeed, DKM has five concerts scheduled over the next four days.

Before game seven of the 2007 ALCS against Cleveland, the Dropkick Murphys were asked to play the national anthem. After a solid rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, they moved into playing Tessie (video from bleachers and field level), and then Shipping Up to Boston (video from right field and field level), when they were joined by a flock(?) of Irish step dancing girls on the warning track in front of the stage. At this point, there was no doubt in anyone's mind that the Red Sox would win the game and go on to the World Series. Here's MTV's article about it.

My brother and I were lucky enough to be at the game. After the song ended, he leaned over to me and asked "why was the Cleveland bullpen warming up right in front of the band?" I was laughing about that for the first half inning.

And of course everyone remembers Papelbon dancing with the band members following the victory. I just hope he doesn't tear and ACL doing that some day.

While the Dropkick Murphys performance as a whole that night was outstanding, the most interesting rendition of the national anthem itself I witnessed last year was an arrangement by Berklee's Tiger Okoshi that blended traditional horns with taiko drums. If you only click one link today, click the "watch" link in the middle of this page for a high quality video of the performance. As I recall, this arrangement was actually performed twice for the Sox last year, once before the first Yankees-Red Sox game and again in the postseason.

If you're like me and think taiko drums kick ass, youtube has a bunch of videos here, here, here, and here, for example. I guess I am pretty much a fan of any music form that at some point involves hitting something as hard as you possibly can.

Men først må jaggu formen bli bedre.

Absolutt å anbefale for barn i (nesten) alle aldre.

Not so much of me being happening, but there are a lot of happening things on that day...

First, those taking MS3003, the module on Materials Failure had their quiz... and I am one of them, happening right?? I studied real hard for it... mugging since Monday... but after taking the test, which has its words twisted, it seems very difficult for my bird brain, I can see that I don't really understand what Dr Gan is trying to teach... I guess I will have to study harder...

Second, it's SINGAPORE WON THE BID FOR YOUTH OLYMPICS 2010!! actually what so exciting about it?? I am neither a sportsman, nor will either this field, nor a business that earns a lot out it... so how does it concern me?? Okay la.. I agree that I am real proud of my country to win this bid, but I don't understand why the minsters have to get so excited over it?? is it that I don't love my country enough??

Third, celebrated Iris' birthday after lesson at Jurong Point, Pizza Hut... there is a new member to dearie's JC group, that is Agnes' bf.. welcome to the boyfriend's club, we are lonely bunch of people.. haha...

Forth, TOTO for Thursday with the 10 million dollars ang bao is out... Even though I am not a gambler, I think I still have to see how my luck goes in this year of the rat. I bought the Prosperity Pack on Monday which contain 2 system 7 numbers and a big sweep ticket... (hey, those underage reading this... especially if you are BB boy, don't gamble ok?) I checked the results after I reached home.. to my surprise, I only manage to get 2 nos. for first row, and 1 no. for second row... I guess my luck isn't so good after all...

Alrite, I think there are 2 performances coming up for me next week. I will be performing at Highlander @ Clarke Quay on 27 Feb 08, around 7 - 8 plus I think... PM... details are not confirmed yet... Come and watch if you can.. it's free, provided by the Highlanders. You do not need to patronise them to watch man.. 2nd one will be the Founder's Day Parade @ ACS Barker Road on 28 Feb 08, around 7 - 8 plus oso.. AM... I suppose you can't come and watch because of the school security... For those who don't know, I play the bagpipe, and it's a bagpipe band...

BTW, I am suppose to be in barker practicing now.. and I am writing blog here.. haha....

The Robbie Burns Night that my historical events costuming group held here in Seattle to celebrate the Scottish poet was a rousing success. We had a piper who piped folks into the hall when they arrived, fabulous food, a musical group providing great music as well as a dance troupe that came to teach Scottish Country Dancing!

The costumes were absolutely wonderful. My friend Kimberly had purchased an outfit when she was at a Renfaire sort of event, so she was all set. Others went out of their way to put together beautiful "Scottish" themed dresses or other 18th century attire. Several of the men came dressed in kilt and hat while others merely wore plaid shirts and dark pants and "called it a day".

As for me? I used the Simplicity pattern and created my own hat based on a little cap I had found that a piper had worn and discarded at a 2nd hand store. I sewed it out of the same plaid fabric as my skirt and then attached cock feathers to compliment the whole thing. I dare say, I think I looked the part, even if I was a chubby-tubby complete with petticoat underneath!

I will be posting out photos of the event to my regular website once I start receiving them in from costuming members who shot digital cameras. I have to have approval of the individuals in the photos before I can put them out onto the web officially. But, feel free to swing past the site: www.SITUSeattle.com or www.CostumingInSeattle.com if that will help you remember the site easier and check if I've loaded up under Past Events a Robert Burns tab!

All the best "to ye" from the lush and green NW corner of these GREAT United States! Auntie Rita

I am selling a set of highland pipes on behalf of a student. They are made by Scott Morton at Caledonian Road Bagpipes in Ontario. High grade ebony drones with cocobolo and nickel silver mounts. There is a Williams chanter, Elk hide bag and synthetic drone reeds. This set is less that 2 years old and very lightly used. I have done a complete service on them and they are playing superbly. They take very little air and have a lovely rich sonorous tone. The asking price is just Kr5000,- which is way under their true value, but we are looking for a quick sale. I will try to record a video clip and post that very soon.
