After all of us got canned from Fox, some were fortunate to stay in the entertainment industry and some of us were not.  A bunch of FAS people put this studio together from the ground up, and I wish them the best.

This took me a while to decide because.... Well, i hate my first two animations.

Oh well.

First up is my Meow assignment. My dislike for this piece grows daily. You can guess why.

And the other project I just finished is the Absolutely Incredible assignment. I had to select one of a couple dozen voice tracks done by my instructor, all saying "Absolutely Incredible", animate a lipsync and act to it.

I really dont like the first half of it. This is proof why I shouldnt animate while frustrated. The timing is all shitty. I like the second half more, but it still needs ALOT of work.

Halloween is probably my favorite holiday.  That's not saying that every Halloween has been whiz-bang fun.  But I love dressing up, I loved the (not really) scariness of ghosts and black cats and bats and witches.  I loved Halloween as a kid (although growing up in Northern Canada meant trick-or-treating in sub-zero weather and a good 8-12 inches of snow in the ground, plus having to wear your snow suit under your costume).  Now, as an adult, I love seeing how excited my niece and nephew get about the holiday.

I recently watched It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown with my nephew.  He liked it, although near the end when Linus mistakes Snoopy for the Great Pumpkin he got a little freaked out and wanted me to turn it off.  He's only four, so we can only hope that with subsequent annual viewings he'll face his discomfort with a Santa figure in a Halloween special.  (It may be a while until he graduates to The Nightmare Before Christmas.)

It's been a while since I myself had seen it.  As an adult, I obviously see it differently than I did as a kid, but that it also in part because the way I see the Peanuts comic strip has changed.  When I was young I absolutely loved Charles Schulz's strip, but as I grew up my tastes became more refined and I embraced Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side.  As an adult I look at the comics page in the newspaper and wonder why today's comics are not funny at all.  Has my sense of humor changed so radically since I was a kid (yes), or have comics just never really been that funny to begin with (YES)?

I feared that watching The Great Pumpkin with an older set of eyes would result in disappointment.  I am happy to report that the special still retains a sense of wonder and innocence.  After all, Peanuts itself is seeing childhood through an older set of eyes, and while The Great Pumpkin is not really funny, there's a magic to it that invokes those same feelings I had about Halloween as I did as a kid.

What's it about? Linus (voiced by Chris Shea) is anxious for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin, the aforementioned Santa Claus of Halloween.  None of his friends nor his sister Lucy (Sally Dryer) believe in the Great Pumpkin and think Linus is stupid for doing so.  Instead of going trick or treating with the neighborhood kids, he waits in the pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin to bring presents and peace and goodwill to all men.

Meanwhile, Snoopy as the World War I Flying Ace's plane/dog house is shot down over France.  Stranded in enemy territory, Snoopy must make it to safety without being caught by the Germans.  (This makes much more sense when you're watching it.)

What's good about it? I have always been a fan of the design and animation of the Charlie Brown specials.  The animation itself isn't perfect--this, like A Charlie Brown Christmas, has some choppy editing--but that's why it's so appealing.  Unlike the crisp and luscious style of Sleeping Beauty (which I recently reviewed), The Great Pumpkin is hand-made and  sloppy, but no less lovingly crafted.  And at a running time of about 25 minutes, The Great Pumpkin knows not to overstay its welcome.

What's bad about it? The cruelty of the other children towards Charlie Brown (Peter Robbins) would leave massive emotional and psychological scarring if he was a real kid.

Perfect for: Kids and grown-up kids.

Poetry and Tragedy: "The Dead"

Billy Collins who served as the United States Poet Laureate from 2001-2003, selected by the Librarian of Congress, has been called "The nation's official lightning rod for the poetic impulse of Americans." In the wake of 9/11, he was asked by USA TODAY to select a piece of his work that he believed had a message for those difficult times.

At that time, Collins wrote, "In the aftermath of the catastrophe of Sept. 11, which was nothing less than a psychic invasion of the United States, many people I know turned intuitively to poetry as a source of sanity and perhaps even consolation. Poetry has always accommodated loss and keening; it may be said to be the original grief counseling center. But American poets will have a hard time if they attempt a direct response to these events, because poetry by its nature moves us inward, not outward to the public and the collective.

Since the destruction of the World Trade Center, the media has tried to fill that hole, that vacuum, with talk and print, but unsuccessfully. Poetry will not fill that space either, but poetry creates its own space apart from such terrible emptiness. It's not that poets should feel a responsibility to write about this calamity. All poetry stands in opposition to it. Pick a poem, any poem, from an anthology and you will see that it is speaking for life and therefore against the taking of it. A poem about mushrooms or about a walk with the dog is a more eloquent response to September 11th than a poem that announces that wholesale murder is a bad thing."

Collins chose The Dead which at first appears to be a seemingly simple allegory for death. The Dead gives the first impression of being a light poem, but the poem's final lines bridge the divide between humor and its much deeper meaning. Further, if you've been around long enough for someone you love to have died, you'll appreciate its sentiment.

The dead are always looking down on us, they say.
while we are putting on our shoes or making a sandwich,
they are looking down through the glass bottom boats of heaven
as they row themselves slowly through eternity.

They watch the tops of our heads moving below on earth,
and when we lie down in a field or on a couch,
drugged perhaps by the hum of a long afternoon,
they think we are looking back at them,
which makes them lift their oars and fall silent
and wait, like parents, for us to close our eyes.

everything will be ok

It all began as an animation obsession a couple of years back, but I just didn't have the time to finish it. There is an opening sequence that I was always very pleased with. See it: Milkman. Anyway, it should be a fun, easy going thing to write and een if I don't win it will just be an exprience to remember! It might be set in London, with a very clichéd, evil/cackling dude.

Milkman must stop the menacing Postman and his boss, Businessman from taking over the city; Policeman, Fireman and Pizzaman are under threat.

Should be interesting. :)

If this is interesting to you, then I'd certainly recommend the work of Jan Svankamjer.

This is a movie which I admire much more for it's attempt to be somewhat more unique and different than most animated movies, than a movie that I like on its own, at least at the gut level. At the core we have a typical hero quest to defeat an evil Wizard (or in this case, an evil Sorceress), but the way there is quite a bit different than in most movies. The hero, Kirikou, is far to small to win the day with strength, so all he can do is using his mind (it's actually sad that this is the exception in movies, not the norm). So Kirikou tries to find out the reason why the evil Sorceress is evil and what can be done about it.

Something that I haven't mentioned so far is that it's taking place in Africa, which is part of what makes it so unique. I thought the depictions of nature and the surroundings were absolutely amazing and gorgeous. But I admit I wasn't completely at ease with the whole nakedness. You easily forget how deeply ingrained it is in our culture to wear cloth everywhere and everytime and how a simple change like most people wearing far less or nothing at all (the kids) in everyday situations can make you uneasy. Obviously what makes me not like this movie on the gut level has nothing to do with quality and all with me reaching the limits of my cultural comfort zone.

With that said, the ending of the movie has a very neat twist that you won't expect, but that was a welcome change from similarly styled vanquish the evil wizard stories. Overall, a different and yet not so different movie that illuminates a part of our world that hasn't been depicted much in entertainment and is nicely done.

A NASA prove goes missing through a wormhole and some chimps are send after it, to deduce the effect of the wormhole on living tissue and brain for an eventual retrieval of the probe through humans. Space Chimps feels like all the computer animated movies you've seen in the last years, there's hardly anything original about it. That said, it's entertaining, the dialog is snappy and shows some wit and you feel right at home with the characters. It just feels like I've seen every element a thousand times over, as if there's a machine cranking out these computer animated movies, generating them following some algorithm that produces, if not good, at least watchable stuff that hits enough buttons to not completely fail as entertainment (snappy dialog [check], reluctant but ultimately willing hero [check], initially cold but finally willing heroine that likes hero [check], ... [check], ... [check] and so on). Which makes me feel like I have been successfully conditioned to like generic stuff like this.

The movie has actually some obvious bad elements, the alien planet is a testament to shitty world design and the second half of the movie is quite dumb too. There's dangerous flauna and flora (everything wants to kill you) that doesn't make a lick of sense from a biological viewpoint, Teletubby-like (more or less) sentient lifeforms with one grumpy version playing the role of the bad boy, using the human space probe to enslave all the other teletubby goblins and press them into working gangs, building a Las Vegas of his own. At least the first part of the movie, that takes place on Earth, doesn't make you feel like watching something really stupid.

Yeah! And only two days too late! Hah, good thing our professor accepts a late project, so long as we turned in at least one picture the day it was really due.

Man... er...men. And ladies. <general acknowledgement>, I spent, since the time I got back from the road trip sunday night, almost every free hour of my week on this one. To be fair, though, I work slow. Yesterday I worked for 12 hours, while watching/listening to old episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report for a welcome relief (as I'm doing now :D ).
The project came out to be around 280 drawings worth, broken down into about 70 poses with the corresponding hair (on a different layer for later editing, should the need be), and other secondary things beyond those.
In order to do all this I've been heading to bed late and getting up early and, like I said, dedicating all my free time to the project. Aw, and after all that work I was a bit sad I couldn't make it in on time...but I did get it done!

Enough about me, though, I have a simple question for you guys, should you choose to accept--

Considering you know what you want to do with your life, what has made you follow that path? What's your motivation to keep going? Do you ever find times when you stop and question the line you've followed?
